  1. Runa accepted the water and rolls with a nod of thanks, then started just a little when the barmaid caught her staring. For a moment, she looked uncomfortable, but there was no escaping it - she had been pulled into the conversation and she couldn't escape without being horribly rude. Clearing her throat, she shrugged and shifted over to the next seat closer, but didn't seem to be in a hurry to speak or introduce herself. Quietly, she sipped her water and nibbled on a honey roll and listened to Aegon and Inja chat.
  2. I have absolutely no artistic ability, and I'm honestly not sure exactly what my character looks like. I have a few details, though, and I would love to find out how some of you would interpret her! Name: Runa Dawning Race: Hyur midlander Gender: Female Age: 20 years old Origin: Garlean Empire Previous profession: Magitek mechanic Current profession: Miner/smith [updated] Appearance Height: 4 Fm, 8 Im Weight: 95 Pz Body: Small figure, likely built for crawling into small spaces when working on machines Hair: Dark auburn, medium length and pulled back in a messy tie to keep it out of her face Eyes: Hazel to green, depending on the light Skin: Tanned with freckles Clothing: Khaki trousers of a thick canvas-like working material. Light weight tunic under a vest of midnight blue. Brown leather jacket and a leather tool belt that hangs off her hip. A weathered brown cap shoved down over her hair in a messy but endearing fashion. Thick leather work boots and a leather pack slung over her shoulder. If that inspires you at all, I'd love to see it. Maybe you'll inspire me! References I've used: Mechanic Girl - I like the hair color, and the toolbelts. I'm considering the tattoo. Mechanic - I like the way the hair is pulled back all messy-like. The toolbelt is also good. Steampunk girl Steampunk mechanic - I like these clothes, especially the pants.
  3. My understanding is that the "linkshells" link on the page includes both linkshells and free companies. The reason for this is that in v.1 (or maybe FFXI?), there were only linkshells, and no free companies. So the veterans are used to calling them linkshells. My confusion lies in being able to see which of the groups on the linkshells page are actually linkshells vs which are free companies. I wish there was a way to differentiate them.
  4. As Runa settled onto her chair, she took a long moment to scan the tavern's occupants before finally turning her gaze back to the barkeep. "A water would be fine, thank you," she replied simply when Abai's attention moved back towards her. Runa's tone was polite and formal but hinted at weariness. Falling silent again, her gaze wandered from the barkeep to the young man she had been talking to and she studied him with the openness of someone who didn't seem to care if she was caught staring.
  5. The young Hyur woman who entered a few minutes behind Aegon looked like she had just come from the smithy, or the road - and either would have been relatively accurate. Her short cropped and unevenly cut hair was pulled back with a band and she wore weathered tunic and trousers which both looked like they'd seen more sand and dust than sea and salt. The pack she had slung over her shoulder was equally weathered and her hands were dry and calloused, with dirt caked under her fingernails. Her angular face might have been pretty, but as she reached up to wipe her flushed face with a cloth, she left a smudge of soot on her cheek. There were no illusions that this was a working woman who cared little about her own appearance. With a sigh, she dropped down onto a stool several seats down from the others at the bar, letting her pack drop to her feet with a thump. She didn't seem in a hurry to order, but was relieved to simply take a load off after a hard day.
  6. I guess that makes Runa the lone miner. Slowly but surely, her story is gaining clarity in my head. After the magitek accident, she has no intention of handling anything that volatile, but she can't help being good with metals. So mining it is.
  7. Well, I'd love a little something if you feel so inclined. The problem is that I had no idea what my character may look like. Here's what I know: Name: Runa Dawning Race: Hyur midlander Gender: Female Age: 20 years old Origin: Garlean Empire Previous profession: Magitek mechanic Current profession: Miner/smith Appearance... Here's where I get stumped. Hair: short-cropped hair, stylished more to stay out of her eyes than any sense of fashion, maybe with a headband or bandana-type cloth Face: angular with sharp cheekbones, but pretty in a humble way Eyes: Green? Maybe? Clothing: No-nonsense tunic and trousers with a tool belt. Clothes might be a tad dirty. Hard leather work boots. A hammer or pick axe in her hand. If that inspires you at all, I'd love to see it. Maybe you'll inspire me!
  8. That may be, and I appologize if I sounded hostile. It really didn't bother me too much, just sort of caused me to go, "okay, that's a little odd."
  9. Though this is unrelated to the Gilgamesh argument as a whole, I will say that you should ABSOLUTELY expect queue times and other issues when the game first comes out. I've been through 2 MMO releases and several expansion releases and one thing I can tell you is that you NEVER expect to get anything done the day (or even week!) of release. Thankfully, SE is taking the path of RIFT and other games in using the open beta and early access as a way to slowly ramp up thei player base and at the same time give the servers a gradual stress test. Even so, the servers will be VERY stressed the first week or two after release. People will bitch. They will scream at SE to set up more servers. And SE will hesitate, wait to see how things play out. Depending on how the game goes, they might add servers, or they mgiht not. But they are caught between a rock and a hard place, because if they open too many new servers, then they will have to merge the servers a month down the road and they do NOT want to do that. So, yeah. I think you are right that Gilgamesh will be jam packed and have quite a nasty queue when the game is released. Be prepared for that. But know that what Gilgamesh looks like on the day of release does not mean it will continue to be that packed a month or two down the road.
  10. So, I'm new and I don't know the history, and while I've read some of the replies, I will only tell you the impression I've gotten on my own. When I was reading through the Linkshells, I saw Crystalline, read that it was temporarily closed and I didnt' even glance at who is in it - even now that it's been brought to my attention that it is mostly the admin of RPC, I really don't care. If you are friends from 1.0 and want to be careful about your linkshell, that's your perogative, and I moved on through my perusement of linkshells looking for one that would fit me. It wasn't until later when you updated your linkshell with: "It seemed like this could use a bump," then added that recruitment is still closed that I raised an eyebrow. It felt to me, like you were saying "Hey, look at us! We're not accepting new members, but we're important enough to be bumped on a list of linkshell recruitments anyway!" I don't know, I can't say it rubbed me the wrong way... but it might have if I had cared enough. I just thought, "Okay, that's a little odd..." and moved on with my life. So... yeah. I'll just leave it at that. I don't have anything against you or Crystalline, but either you are closed and private (even temporarily) or you are public and open. And if you are closed/private (even temporarily), then my personal opinion is that you aren't of interest to me or anyone else who might be looking for a place to call home. You can't be both closed/private AND of interest to me. Just my $.02.
  11. I think it's time for me to break down and ask for a mentor. >.> I'd love someone who is fluent in Garlean lore and can let me pick their break for resources and/or ideas. Thanks!
  12. Admittedly, I'm as much confused about the classes of FFXIV as I am the lore. That comes from only being able to play for 3 days and not having any experience with FFXI or FFXIV 1.0. It makes it hard to decide what my character concept will be when I have no idea what class she'll even play. So with that in mind, I discovered these two little gems. They made me laugh and explained some things I didn't know. Enjoy! Note: They are 'videos', but do not use real game footage in respect of the NDA. Also, there is some language. So, beware. yVSY6MV38vY cTnxN77QQWU
  13. That is the most beautiful thing I have ever read. Thank you.
  14. I agree that a linkshell may be perfect. In my opinion, a free company should have a purpose, something it is striving to accomplish. Like a corporation or a business or a club - they have a purpose with uniting together. A family is more of a... unit of familiarity. So, that said, here are my votes: Server: Gilgamesh FC or LS: Linkshell My Character: Runa Dawning, ex-Imperial Hyur and ex-magitek mechanic who needed a place to stay and has agreed to devote her skills and talents towards the family's merchant ventures
  15. It's okay! I should have stopped to read the instructions. >.> Maybe a note when you click the "create account" that says "Read the instructions noob!" (No, I'm kidding, unless it's me, then you can call me a noob).
  16. Oh! Thank you! And I just realized I posted this in the wrong forum. I'm sorry!!
  17. I popped onto the wiki to try to create a page for my character, but it won't let me create a new account. Is this intentional? Are we not adding anything new to the wiki until after the game launches?
  18. I, too, was hoping to settle on Gilgamesh and it sounded from the post like either server was an option, but I can be flexible as well.
  19. I have to say I've never done anything like this, but it sounds like a lot of fun! I'll definitely join in, either with the character I'm developing now (an amensiac runaway from the empire) or another character concept I have played before (an elezen rogue/spy who would love to be a part of the original family). Or maybe someone else. Count me in!
  20. I may do that, thank you! It's so strange, usually I have this clear idea of my character's personality at the very least. In this case, I'm kind of molding her as I go along. At least I have a name, so I'm going to work on her wiki page today and then I might ask if you are willing to look over it for me.
  21. Thank you for everyone's input! I think at this point I will go ahead and give her 2 names - her old, Garlean name and her new name which she gave herself when she left the empire. Real name: Calypso ??? New name: Runa Dawning So, I just have to come up with a good latin/italian/greek surname and I'll be set. Now at least I can start working on her wiki page - I couldn't do that without a name! On a side note, it really is fascinating how the poll is turning out - there's really no single winner!
  22. Ooh that's a good point. I was considering Dawning for a surname since it represents a fresh start for her. Maybe ill look up Latin translations for "dawn"...
  23. Well, I'll also happily take any other suggestions you might have, especially regarding a surname.
