Balmung's Finest: Community Dungeon Crawling Initiative
LiadansWhisper replied to Rhylund's topic in FFXIV Discussion
Actually, that isn't what I was talking about. You may get a bad player, or a ninja. And then you can tell your friends, and their friends, about said bad player. And if they're bad enough, or pull the same behavior enough, they will find themselves without people to do dungeons with. -

I didn't find Wow's community have changed much before or after Dungeon finder. When I was with a group I knew, they were awesome. When it wasn't even if it was same server it was a coin flip. I got plenty of abuse with people from my same server tanks who couldn't tank shit, healers who couldn't heal shit, DPS who attack whatever they want and ignore Cc, etc The only thing DF cut out was "wait around 3 hours looking for group because I'm a mage" That's why I think DF is seen as so bad. You get to see more of Wow's community in a quicker period of time.. and alot of it is shit people. On the otherhand dungeons are always more fun with friends rather than silently compitent types who never speak up. I have had a different experience. The community from BC and the community now in MoP are very different, and Dungeon Finder is part of that. However, like I said, it's just a single piece in a rather large puzzle. In the case of FFXIV, I don't think it will be an issue. Incidentally, the issue with DF and "shit community" is that when you are forced to queue with people from your server, you have a social investment in behaving and doing your best (or else you'll be blacklisted). Dungeon Finder removes that. -
Balmung's Finest: Community Dungeon Crawling Initiative

I think random dungeon finders can have a negative impact on a server community, as I saw in WoW from Wrath of the Lich King to present day. However, there are a lot of other factors that play into that. It's not like, one thing. There are many other factors in FFXIV that will offset any negativity you see in the dungeon finder. I'm going to be playing a main spec healer, but I'm sure I'll get around to tanking and DPSing at some point. I'd love to be a part of this if there's ever room. -
To be honest, I'm not sure it makes sense at all in the overarching storyline, given what I've read about the setting. I guess you could explain it as alliances "fraying about the edges" now that it's 5 years since the Calamity. I think it would make really good sense if it was an in-character rivalry type thing. Like, between Free Companies or some such.

If you redeemed an EU code...and you purchased a US game, that's not going to work. You're going to end up not able to play the game when it actually drops.

Could also go with descriptions, and simply allow the imagination take flight! That's actually how I first learned to RP. In Ayenee in Yahoo waaaaaaaay back in the day, and then later on SEAChat websites dedicated to the World of Darkness setting from White Wolf. It can be fun describing everything. Ah, I'm game with this. If there's a mini event on Skype I wanna join, if I may? c: Add me.

Haha, thank you very much! Sadly, I don't know how to pronounce half of what I'm writing. In any case, wouldn't it be cool to organize any sort of mini event over Skype before the game opens? I mean a multi-chat for several people. It'd be a good way to get to know other characters beforehand, especially for future plots. The downside is that you can't really see the characters you're RPing with, but I guess that posting screens would suffice. This is a really interesting thread! I hope no one minds if I add my thoughts on the subject. I have to say that some of the best RP I've ever had has been with villainous characters. To this day, I still think back on a storyline I happened to get involved with (not intentionally!) that pitted my Dawnbringer of Lathander against a High Priest of Bane. It completely changed my character forever, and was some of the best RP I have ever had the good fortune and privilege to be a part of. Ever. With that said, I rarely see evil done really well. One thing that can be especially troubling is that in a "Lawful Good" setting - that is, a setting where the default "alignment" is assumed to be good, and most people have "good intentions" - open evil won't work. Open evil will simply be united against and destroyed, no matter how cool the concept is. So for evil to work in an environment where most people are of a goodly (or at least not evil) bent, it has to be subtle. But it's hard to do subtle evil. You have to work with people who are mature, and who completely understand the difference between In Character and Out of Character. What's more, the evil character has to be extremely vigilant about Metagaming (i.e. magically knowing things about another character that your character wouldn't have any way of knowing), and in moderated games, generally needs Moderator/Storyteller/Dungeonmaster assistance in tamping down both intentional cheating an unintentional slips. As you can probably imagine, this is really freaking hard to do in a moderated setting. It's even more crazy sauce when you try to do it in an unmoderated setting where information can often spread like wildfire, and it can be impossible to track down the source of a rumor to verify whether the person who started it actually had the information to do so. But it can work! It absolutely can! I've seen it done! It just requires two things that a lot of people are unwilling to to do. The first is trust. You have to trust your fellow players. You have to believe that they are as interested in you having fun as you are interested in them having fun. Roleplay is a mutual story between multiple people. It's not a win or lose game. When we roleplay, we're engaging in mutual storytelling with the goal of our own personal enjoyment, and the enjoyment of our fellow roleplayers. But it is so easy to begin to wonder about the motives of another person when they do something that you or your character don't like. It isn't necessarily a sign of immaturity when you balk at something out of worry. It's human nature. "Hey man, this dude is totally screwing my character over. This is so not fair! He must hate me!" Yeah but...he doesn't. It's just a game. It's just a story. And you're both just trying to tell it. Trust is hard, but it's possible if you keep the lines of communication open. I firmly believe if you have a serious problem with a situation, you should speak to the other people involved and try to resolve it to the happiness of all concerned. Maybe something about the situation really bothers you. Maybe you just didn't want your character to be changed in a particular way. Maybe you're confused about how to play it out. Etc. That's all fine, and completely normal. But this brings up the other big thing about engaging in RP with a villainous character. You have to be willing to lose. I know, I know - this isn't a competition, and you can't win at RP. But you can lose a lot during RP. Your freedom. Your livelihood. Your powers. Your appearance. Hell, you can lose your mind and a number of other things. And yes, that includes your life. If you are RPing with someone of an evil bent, there's a high likelihood that you're going to lose at something, because that's what generally happens when good meets evil - someone loses. Now "losing" doesn't necessarily mean the end of your character. Because loss can spark further character growth, and every end is really just a new beginning. I would be the first to admit, however, that I have had characters so radically changed by a storyline that I ended up dropping them after a certain point because they were so far away from where they were intended to be that I lost interest. As a matter of fact, that's what ultimately happened to my Dawnbringer (though not because of the Banite). But that is a risk that you take when you deal with someone who is evil. And for that matter, that is the risk that every evil character takes every time they interact with someone else. The thing is, evil characters are usually the ones who lose, whether fairly or unfairly. So the losing aspect goes both ways. In the end, though, a well-played evil character is amazing to RP with. I happen to really enjoy the byplay of light against dark, so this may be personal bias. But I have really found that as long as I keep those lines of communication, and keep remembering that we're just telling a story together, the RP normally ends up being fantastic. Honestly, I'd like to see some well-played evils out there. The most dangerous, most terrifying evil is the one you never realize is evil because they're so good at doing all the right things. The second most terrifying evil? The one that's convinced he or she is doing the right thing. Anyway, just my $0.02. Hope I didn't ramble too much!

We aren't fooled by your platitudes! We know the truth! :bouncy: Since others have tossed theirs out, feel free to add me. Just don't laugh at my name, ok? HRHidingOutAsReta It's a long, long story. :dodgy:

A comprehensive look at the Seventh Umbral Era story arc [1.0]
LiadansWhisper replied to Merri's topic in Lore Discussion
Can you do me a favor and delete my thread I made? Since it doesn't have to be merged with this one. -
You could host it in a dropbox and then anyone who wanted it could DL it.

You can't speak English? I am surprised! You write it better than most of the people here speak it!

So this just popped across my twitter. I read the whole thing, and after reading it, decided I wanted to share it (since I didn't see anything on the subject here already). http://gamerescape.com/2013/08/21/the-rise-and-fall-of-the-white-raven/ It answered quite a few questions I had, though I still have more. Edited to Add: Actually, this probably belongs in the sticky I just saw above. But I don't know how to move it there. If a moderator could, that would be amazing.

I've used Skype for RP before in the past, primarily for scripted combat that we couldn't actually play out in the world (we had to figure out the ending, it was part of a greater storyline, etc). I started in text-based RP so yeah. I don't ever use Skype for voice RP tho! That's just weird to me!

I can't draw. D: I can write (except when I can't), but my drawing is limited to stick figures and smiley faces!

You will still need a code for early access. If your vendor didn't give you one, contact them now.

https://secure.square-enix.com/account/app/ Still works for me.

So I completed that and my beta account was made into a Square Enix account (the one you use to login to their main site for all of their games) and I noticed under my list of games I had nothing. Several hours later I put in my 18 digit code, logged in with the above account and it actually works. The window changes and I'm presented with the other code, which I have to put into a linked website, and is then accepted. At this point I noticed that my beta account, now a Square Enix account has FFXIV under the "my games" tab. Convoluted to say the least. But I did notice that on the old Square Enix account page, which has FFXIV listed as a service, they mention that the site is getting a revamp on the 22nd to coincide with the launch of ARR. I could be totally wrong but I think as long as your game appears in your general Square Enix account, then you should be good. Um. You're mistaken. They are two separate accounts. You didn't make your beta account into a Square account. Your beta account still exists. It's the service account. Your square account (like in the picture) is the social website.

I think part of my problem is probably the giant holes I have in my knowledge of the game's lore. Actually, now that I think about it, I'm going to go make another thread in the RP Discussion thread and ask questions. I have so many, and I don't really know where to look. :-\

So I'm trying to write the background on the character I want to play. And it's just not working. I tried the Questionnaire I found in one of the other sections. I swear to god, she smirked at me. I tried just writing it out. It's in my head. It won't come out. She's trolling me. Do you ever get this way? How do you get out of it? I've tried music. I've tried just sitting there waiting for the words to come. I'll write something, then erase it because it isn't right (and I know it isn't right, I just don't know what IS right, as it were). This is driving me nuts. :frustrated:

If the code starts with RAAU it's an NA code. If it starts with RAAE, it's an EU code.
-
Well my Square profile now has FFXIV: ARR under registered games, I think that means I'm all good doesn't it? This is just speculation, because I haven't seen the info personally, but based off of how other games work, you will just have to enter the physical game's code (well, or digital game's code) when it's released. There's usually a 48 hour grace period after launch to give people time to enter it.
