  1. Add me to the list of "legacy" players that didn't get far. I only got one job to level 20. The game wasn't doing so good in 1.0, hence the reboot, so many people didn't actually play that long. Add to this that I'm planning to start over with a new character. So I might be technically legacy, but I'm going to be rubbing elbow with the rest of the new players.
  2. I was thinking about this (as I'm sure most of us are) and I had a thought. The rumor that is going around is that P4 will start on the 9th. But I thought I heard that we would need to download a whole new client for this. If that's true, wouldn't we have gotten some notice about that by now? It would be a large download. If not, there hasn't been any patch either. Perhaps we don't need one or only a small one, but still, we should hear something about that soon-ish, and I would think before the live letter if it is to be on the 9th. Which makes me think that it might be the next week. That really crunches things.
  3. Then I apologize whole-heatedly as that was not at all my intent. Just to add: I have no hostile thoughts to anyone and their plans. I may be sad to see this split happening in the community, but at the end of the day everyone has to make their own way. I'm just offering my views on the matter and text fails at portraying tone. In the end it is always up to each person what will make them the most happy.
  4. But here's the thing, what does it matter what some people are role-playing? It's not like EITHER server is going to be in perfect RP harmony. The fact that we have a server split as is is proof of that. We all know (those that have past RP experience) that there are role-players we can't click with. That's natural. It will happen on Gilgamesh and it will be on Balmung. Sure there are some older players that have their "thing", but they will always have that "thing", JUST like you and your 10 friends have their "thing". That's just how people and groups work. It's the same fear when joining a guild that you might worry that they might not notice your or accept you because they already know each other. That's a micro version of what this server deal is about. But there are already a bunch of new guilds with all new players on Balmung doing their thing whether they mesh with the old or not. Nothing is stopping them. Say you and your 10 friends started an LS, how would you feel if people didn't want to join because you all already know each other?
  5. I think the "safest" response anyone can give at this point is to try them both. As disheartening it is to not give a nice an clear answer, this is the best we can give. At this point it isn't really a good idea for either side to say which one to go with as it sparks too much debate. For me the answer's simple. As with every past MMO I've joined, I go with the server with the highest concentration of role-players. I really don't see this idea that the established role-players on any server will somehow limit any new player or group from gaining a foothold. And, really, what foothold would that be? This isn't a competition. There isn't some kind of limit to how much someone can RP. If someone is bothering your RP, as with anything, go to another corner then, you don't have to go to another server cause you'll find potential resistance anywhere, especially on a server with a lower RP population. There are a LOT of players on these servers. There is plenty of room for everyone and all types of role-players to exist and do their thing. But the best part about being together is, like we are all together on this single site, we CAN mingle and find each other new and old to play with when we want to get our legs more wet. Just keep in mind that the old players are already very much outnumbered, maybe not on this site, but certainly on the server itself. Beside the fact that none of them here have EVER given any inclination to stifle anyone's plans or desires to make their own way, I think there will be plenty of room for everyone and I'm not worried.
  6. I've never seen this "pecking order" on Balmung. There are a lot of new FC/LSs forming there just fine and no one is telling them to get in the back. I do see people on Gilgimesh saying that they have no fear about the possible "bad" communities going to their server, yet they seem to fear the community on Balmung. Why not take that same defiant energy for playing on Gilgamesh and do it with the rest of us on Balmung? That's an honest question. I think that would be awesome, actually. It would create that spice that you want. Because as I see it, new fellow role-players are more afraid of the old role-players than communities with bad reputations. That, my friends, is pretty scary as a role-player, new or old. If we can't get along in our own little corner of the game then what are we doing? As I see it, we're all role-players (otherwise, why are you here), no one is telling anyone what to do, but as one type of community, I thought we were all here for the same thing. I mean, we try to get along on -this very website- as one community, why can't we do that on the same dang server? Now it's seems we're two things, New RP and Old RP, which, like I said before, in a couple months will be pretty much the same on both servers. There will be old Gilgamesh RP and old Balmung RP. What will the difference be? This is what I'm trying to figure out. I get the reasons -right now-, but this is a long-term deal, so what will be different in a couple months? What will make one distinct to the other? What will we tell new players? "This one has 'these' role-players here, and that one has 'those' role-players there." Even after saying all that, I'm not all that worried about all this. Really, the more I think about it, as far as the RPC goes, I think this will be a moot point after a while. There are clearly only a handful of staunch Gilgamesh supporters willing to fight their good fight. Once the game is going and everyone gets involved in their groups etc things will quiet down a lot. So I'm going with the attitude of letting things play out. I may have my opinion on the matter (above), but at the end of the day I'm not really worried. I just want to play! :bouncy:
  7. I think, in part, it has become more of a "competition" between the "underdogs"(Gilgamesh) and the "old nobility"(Balmung) (I'm being sarcastic as this is how I think both sides see each other). A lot of the replies I see from Gilgamesh supporters gives me the impression that they are fighting for a cause against some kind of regime. They like the idea of fighting against the odds. I see them as the rebels. I think many Gilgamesh players see themselves that way as well (though, I could be wrong) and I can see the appeal to that. The funny thing is, to me the "old guard", as some put it, on Balmung are already greatly outnumbered by the new players AS IS. They will likely be -drowned- out by the new players, and if the game does good this will only keep growing. Let's face it, to be blunt, many role-players have a sense of stage and theatrics. Well, you can't really feel you have equal stage if you have to fight next to famous "stars"(established role-players on Balmung), right? So I think -one of- the ideas is that moving to a new server will allow some of the new blood to have a chance at establishing themselves as the new "stars" for their new server. So, okay, that all makes sense, even if it is a little self-serving, but I get it. Problem is, in a couple months, this won't matter -one bit- because if the game does good (crosses fingers) then there will be more waves of new players. This happens in a lot of new MMOs. The early adapters try it out and if they say the water is warm, then a whole bunch of new people come in. And in the case of XIV, due to its past, I bet a lot of people are waiting on the fence. But in past MMOs when those new players join I rarely have seen them come to an established RP community (and you know we always have one for nearly every MMO that's come out) and say, "Yo, I think we need another server since I'm new and I don't want to play with the established crew." It's almost always, "What's the RP server?" They get an answer and that's that. At the very least, that's how I've always approached it, but maybe I like playing in the same sandbox. But when we get our new waves of players for XIV, what will we tell them? Right now there is an obvious division or flavor between the two servers, but that won't really be the case in a couple months. And what we will really end up with is a genuine split in the community and nothing more. Not two servers with two different flavors, but two unofficial RP servers. Just think about the confusion that will cause a new player. I'm very much "live and let live." I think in a couple weeks we'll all be playing and this won't really even be a concern of ours. But when things settle, and the honeymoon is over, and we come back to these forums to talk about our adventures, I can only imagine that this will crop up again when a new player joins and we'll all look at each other and go, "Why did we split our community up again?"
  8. Yeah, haha, that makes sense now. Especially for those that want to try Arcanist at the start.
  9. That's right, I remember picking my class when I tried her in the beta for a bit, but I figured I was supposed to pick the highest one that she was or else things would be wonky. I didn't try picking a class she didn't have any levels in. >.
  10. This question just kinda popped into my head. I have a 1.0 character that has one job of level 20. So I obviously didn't play that far in 1.0. I barely touched the echo story. So for those that played the beta with their 1.0 characters through the new story some, would you say that the 2.0 story has some details that I wouldn't get unless I played deep into 1.0? I read up and watched some videos on the 1.0 story, but I just have a basic overview of the events. I don't know if I know enough of the details. Also some random questions: Could I change to a level 1 class okay and still progress or will that cause some issues? I remember hearing that 1.0 characters will get a one-time remake, do we know any details on this? What can be changed etc?
  11. Those asking about noble families, I started a post about that a while ago, which may help. http://ffxiv-roleplayers.com/showthread.php?tid=2368
  12. Don't forget, these things will also ebb and flow after launch. People will leave and move around. People will change their main class as groups start to settle. Some might even re-roll when they see how the population is spread out. Though, I think Miqo'te will always be super popular since they were in 1.0 as well and especially now with the males. NOW, if they ever add the Viera that were a popular vote long ago, we might also have an overabundance of rabbit girls too. That should take some pressure off the Miqo'te.
  13. Besides the fact that it's either not known to exist in the lore or genetically possible (in reality), I think it's important to ask a couple questions about this kind of idea. Mainly, is this something that really helps the character or is it something that just sounds cool? How will this play out in actual role-play? I doubt many people would go around saying, "Hello, I'm John. By the way, did you know I was a half-breed? I know, pretty cool, right?" Well, maybe John would if he though it would help him pick up women... but anyway. Since you can't actually make a character that looks half and half, people will assume you are X race most of the time. Which means, if this is something that is important to the character, you'll have to explain it, which, to me, if you have to explain a physical feature as a defining aspect of the character, then it's going to cause some awkward moments in role-play. My point is, unless there is a personality reason for it, ideas like this can be awkward in actual role-play if it's the cornerstone of your whole character concept. IE, don't let this kind of concept replace your development of their personality. Leaning on a concept like this can make a character seem very one-dimensional.
  14. If I can ask, how big are you guys now? Are you planning to limit your size?
  15. From what I remember Yoshi-P himself said the early access would only be 3-5 days, which is in line with most early access. A whole week seems unlikely to me. It's usually the weekend before launch. There was a hoax image going around the beta forums that seems to have started the 20th rumor. There is also a new date found on the official site that has caused some new speculation. Aug 17 seems to now have some meaning in regards to beta registration. There's a lot of speculation going around right now. I had registered my e-mail at the code-redemption website, not the actual code I had received. But I did get an email from Enix thanking me for pre-ordering and it had that information with it. Also stating to keep my code until they email me again, closer to early access with all the steps needed to set the game up, blah blah blah. ****Edit: HOWEVER, I do remember it not saying specifically august 20th, just that it will be seven days before actual launch and that it was supposed to be a seamless transition into the launch. I just did the math myself and assume the 20th if all went well with phase 4. I still have that email and there is no mention of seven days in the whole message. I can quote it if you'd like.
  16. I think you can only have one active device applied at any one time anyway. I'd hold on to it in case the older one starts to go or just move over to the app.
  17. Mostly been playing Skyrim, Dragon's Dogma and other random rpgs and games. Also been working on story for a unconnected personal project. I've got plenty to keep busy, if not too much, but it still seems like ARR is taking forever to get here.
  18. I'm curious if these results have changed anyone's plans?
  19. That's the thing about rigs, though. A pre-built rig might be good for prototyping, but it's often that it will break or not control the model properly for certain motions. It really depends on what is needed. And really, good luck getting all animators to agree on the best type of rig. I can imagine it would be nearly impossible to get all gaming studios to do the same. EDIT: Just to add, it's not only about how the rig can control the model, but each animator has their own preference for how they like to control and access certain features and motions in a rig. So that alone can cause a big discrepancy in rig preference as well. That can also change depending on if you are using mocap or hand animating or both (though, usually, mocap needs some clean up anyway). Anyway, sorry for getting off topic... >.>
  20. Hehe, I'm no game programmer, though I've dabbled a little, but I do know 3D animation, and even in that industry skeletons (rigs) from one project to the next can be vastly different. You would think since they are all human it would be pretty standardized, and while there are some standard rigs, everyone has their own ways of doing things and each project has its own requirements.
  21. In the case of animation, each game usually uses their own skeleton setup, which can't be simply transferred. Same goes with animated faces since there are many ways to animate something like that (bones or morphs or both). On top of that each game creates their own functions and sub-systems to control certain aspects of the game. Those are usually pretty unique between games and studios. When you add all those variables to the mix, taking code for controlling animations from one game to the next would likely not work at all.
  22. I agree. While not everyone will agree with his vision, I think it's clear that he has a real passion for what he's doing and it's not just for the sake of money. Considering how many MMOs he's played in his own time, this is probably a dream come true for him and I'm sure he doesn't want it to fail. So many times I've played MMOs and wondered "did they even play their own game?" It's good to see they actually test it as a team, bring in others from the company and see if the game is fun etc. Considering how much of this first (re)iteration of this game had to be done in a short amount of time with the baggage of the original game and creating the basic foundation, I'm really eager to see what this team does from here on out.
  23. This sounds interesting, but can be jarring if it's just mouth flaps with no body motion that goes with it. Humans don't usually keep their head perfectly still while talking. I wish a game would take the idea of multi-character emotes from games like the Matrix Online where you could hug and such (course, with the other player's approval). I've never seen that done again since then. I guess, though, with all the different race sizes and height slider, that would be impossible for this game.
  24. I'm so shocked to see that a quarter of the class population is Conjurer/White Mage. There won't be a shortage of healers at least.
