  1. This is what I'm getting at. Flavor text =/= truth, as it has been used not only in XIV, but many other games and things to add.. well. Flavor. If you don't have sound lore, you shouldn't be going to the flavor text to find it like some kind of starved crack-fiend. It's the fault of the devs for not making it clear and abundant. The fact that one case of joke flavor text exists means that others must.
  2. I thought the point of this thread was that we can RP however we want??????? Not sure what either of these posts has to do with anything, but knock yourself out Val. But now it's okay to assume based on what we see? I haven't seen a single miqo'te NPC in Ishgard outside of any recent immigrants, nor have I seen a single Miqo'te NPC dragoon and there is no flavor text relating to it afaik, so they must not exist.
  3. So... we can cherrypick the lore now based on whether or not we feel the mass culling of unfortunately named flying cephalopods is humorous or not? There's a metric tonze of lore that comes from item descriptions, fishing lore, and mount/minion text. I don't see anything about the Vampiric Tapestry's text that was "clearly meant to be a joke." What it shows is that Ishgardian people are as superstitious as the rest of Eorzeans and will drive a stake through a creature's heart just because of its name. Similar to how Ishgardians culled Au Ra because of their draconic appearance. If we are to discount these texts, we're also discounting the lore which gave us the name of Nanamo's father, the fact that Merlwyb Bloefhiswyn discovered the New World in 1556, and that during the War of the Magi, the Mhachi rode into battle on the backs of enchanted Manta Rays, which they called Magic Carpets. Do we discount those as well? "If it's humorous, it's not canon" also eliminates the lore bomb that Ul'dah zombified Sil'dih to end the War of the Sisters 400 years ago. And if Events aren't canon we lost a lot of lore about Paladins and the Thorne Dynasty. I mean... do I really need to go on? Sounsyy's point is valid and I agree. We can't just choose to ignore something because dislike the possible implications. I for one am not going to beg someone for lore and accept it with gratitude when it suits my purposes and then reject it next time because it doesn't. Thank you Sounsyy. Then we must also go on the assumption that because it isn't in game, it doesn't exist? Like how there's no justification for miqo'te dragoons and such beyond the super special main character? And I guess since I can ride Sleipnir and wear his armor, my character is Odin?
  4. My Miqo'te dragoon is half vampire, half Allagan. 3stronk5u
  5. If that's the case, we have Miqo'te dragoons because...?
  6. I don't really think we should take comical flavor text clearly meant to be a joke as a serious entry to lore, though. SE has a big history with throwing things in their games just to justify an action/event/whatever that doesn't need to be. The cephalopod seems to be more a joke name than anything else, an allusion to the real world myth rather than anything in game. That's my take from it, at least
  7. Marquis was never once identified as a vampire. His class is just a blatant copy of Samurai and he received his powers through possession of the Lucavi. He has vampire-like qualities/looks, but he isn't one. He inflicted the status effect "Vampire", which could then be spread by that player to other players through attacks. He isn't called a vampire, but those he infected certainly were. Oh yeah! I totally forgot about that status effect. I always assumed it was just a general name because he turned them into the living dead, but they could think/move themselves.

  9. Heya! While not an actual FC/guild, I help run a linkshell of mobsters that kind of specialize in this sort of thing. You can find out more about them here.
  10. That term must have gone out of style by the time I was in Ayenee (I didn't have internet or a computer in the mid-90s). I just remember godmodding from when I got there. TBH, I didn't find good RP until I moved on to text-based WoD settings and then later when I discovered NWN. Idunno, I hit the scene around 97-99ish and it was still being used then, into the early 00s when it asploded. Granted, it was likely only used around particular circles then. Yeah it was pretty prevalent till about 99? Man I started back 96' or so? Maybe 97'? I feel old. It was pretty 'gone' by the time early 00's came around mostly because they started closing down the servers- Yahoo that is. Earlier 90's it was good rp if you found yourself in a decent guild; very nice people etc. Minimal drama but then... Like Rome it all crashed lol. We used to mentor people back then, I think by the time 00's hit there were little to no people mentoring. It was a different time- and thus I am now old as fuck. I miss it though; it was a fun time. Like you said above, Liadan; there was a lot to be found there. There was also various forms of combat, T1/T2 etc a lot of these terms were defunct by the time 00's hit. Though at the same time- by that point it was long gone the days of yore as it were. As for the forums; it was a lot of shiposting and cliquish crap. It's why I avoided them. Yup yup. I knew some of the guys that helped form the whole T1/T2/T3 thing. Some were good people, some were pricks. T1 was basically what we use now, T2 was based around the fastest typer wins, and T3 was just full-on autos. As I said in an earlier post, back then people didn't RP combat so much as they used it as a status symbol to wave around. Looking back on it, I miss the time because there was a lot of great and fun RP, but then I think I'm just being blinded by nostalgia because really a lot of the RP I saw/did was shit. It wasn't until I got a bit more experience under my belt and moved on to other things that I started to grow. And yeah, when they all moved to forums I bailed. It was awful.
  11. That's the problem. You can't/shouldn't change the lore around to suit your needs. You can bend it, but this bending should be very graceful. The dragons in the game are not your typical dragons of lore and should not be viewed as such. how else could i bend it tho? thats why i wanted the first ones to be a nature spirit in a human body that was the progenitor of it. and it doesnt have to be dragons i was merely illustrating the many interpretations beyond vampires being demonic in origin. hell in True Blood God is believed to be a vampire lol hydaelyn has some explaining to do That's what we're trying to tell you. In XIV lore, it just isn't plausible to RP a natural/traditional vampire. There are alternatives that people have suggested that work more or less like one, but you would need to be willing to drop the term "vampire" and just RP a dude that eats aether. the word vampire does exist in ff14 tho there's a regeant called Vampire plant that sucks lifeblood from plants around it so the label and terminology already exist in the game Just because the reference is there doesn't mean that the creatures exist. The same could be said about any item/event/whatever they've done. Vampire is just a word. The creature it's tied to doesn't have to exist for it to be used.
  12. i think thats the point lol im not gonna shout hey im a vamp love me to everyone i see its more of the plausibility of a what if situation. if they existed how would it be implemented? in real life myth they're descended from demons or Cain himself, anime has them without usual weaknesses like in A Certain Magical Index so i wanna see how it could work in ff14. Dracula also means son of the dragon so could there be a connection to dragons if we were to change the lore around? thats what im mostly looking for. story ideas and exploring lore not outright stamping it out lol That's the problem. 14. the allagans beat gods into submission already and the elementals made the padjal so they have some ability to create a race that doesnt age and could potentially be abused and corrupted by humans. and they are tangible they help u fight a tainted sprite in a quest and the enemy spirtes are corrupted lesser elementals The elementals are beyond the power of mortals and would never create a race specifically to suck the blood/aether out of things. And there's no "beating an elemental into submission" afaik. The Allagans also don't exist anymore and haven't for a pretty long time. Until something comes out and says "Hey they made vampires because they felt like it," you probably shouldn't do it.
  15. There are a couple of vampire-like classes in some FF games. A few even call them "vampires," but that's about it.
  16. In that case, I'm gonna RP a Saiyan as a monk. Can't say it doesn't exist 'cause it's a big world out there 8-) not really much of a stretch when there's demons and gods running around. and hey why not maybe you were sent to hydaelyn as a baby lol The problem is that these demons and "gods" are just that--special god characters. The character you RP is not considered one of them. As everyone else has already stated, your argument doesn't really hold up. You of course are welcomed to do what you want, but be forewarned that most people will likely avoid/ignore the character the moment they find out what he/she is supposed to be.

I think he has you beat here. @#%$

  19. Vampires absolutely do not exist in XIV lore. And that's.. pretty much it. There isn't really a way around it, and making up a race specifically to RP one just won't work. You're going to meet so much opposition that it's probably going to be more of a nuisance for you than fun. If you want to RP a vampire, I'd suggest going to an actual vampire-based RP. XIV isn't the place for it.

  21. I think you're in the wrong thread... ...and this what happens when I have multiple tabs open at once. Better strike through it so people know you don't mean it.
  22. The only time I, myself, have used future-tense is to describe a character's reaction to what-if scenarios. It's a very rare occurrence, but sometimes I feel as if it is warranted depending on the situation. For example, if Val is at a distance and is running at the person, I simply post that he's doing such and, if he gets close enough, he would attempt such-and-such. At that point, it opens the entire sprint up for the opponent/whatever to interfere with. In the grand scheme of things, I don't see it being particularly overpowering as, if multiple actions are given, it allows the opponent to choose which one to allow/defend against. Like a chain, if the first is stopped, then none of the others should follow.
  23. They're sort of opposites of each other. An auto is any action which "automatically" succeeds. Like when you have a hammer which you swing and hit someone without giving them a chance to dodge. The hammer and swinging is perfectly fine, it just assumes the other character eats it. Godmodding is using a trait or action which, by its nature, cannot be defeated. The classic example is the man who can eat that hammer without a scratch. However, it's more common that people have electrified weapons that can't be blocked, killing the entire room with poison that nobody could have known he left there, etc. It's essentially something which is immune to any action. In a way, they're opposites because autoing implies that something succeeds no matter what, and godmodding implies that no matter what, nothing succeeds. They're both technically etiquette violations and it's fine to allow someone to do it if that's part of your story, but in open RP, they're both pretty much forbidden. I've...literally never heard anyone try to break these up into two separate things. I've always heard "godmodding" defined as basically taking an action without allowing for a reaction. You don't give the other party a way out. This is actually the first time I've ever heard of the term "autoing," much less as something separate from godmodding. People normally cover both of the situations you are describing under "godmodding." mod note: I cleaned up the quote a little bit. Put stuff back in the right boxes. I've heard the terms used both interchangeably and to denote something entirely different from one another. Autoing was something that people did that, back in the day, was referred to as T3. Most people (quite obviously) frown upon its use. Godmodding was always referred to as just making a ridiculously stupid OP character. Like, hella stupid OP. Over time I think the terms just came together and, really, they kind of fit. It's still forcing things on people they don't want.
  24. I'm sure the former roleplaying userbase of Yahoo IM's roleplaying forums appreciate your generalization based on the manner they mutually and often respectably handled combat with strangers with no dice pools present or mutual backstory. Idunno how to break this to you, but most of the people I know/knew/have known from Ayenee were elitist pricks that tried to wave their RP around like a status symbol rather than just enjoy it for what it was. I'm sure that there were some good people there. Hell, I am in touch with a few, but most of them are (and continue to be) arrogant pricks. I'm in a facebook group with some of these so-called "old schoolers" and judging by the tone of their posts, not really much has changed.
  25. This is pretty much how I feel. I know there are people out there that could care less, but I'd rather just avoid problems and be safe. I abhor drama explosions and would prefer to keep away from it. Another alternative is to just watch/observe people. I quit posting on the RPC for multiple reasons, but I still lurk and watch people. You can learn a lot by how someone interacts with others. Same goes for watching others RP in game. After a few sessions, I can generally tell if I could tolerate someone enough to do things with.
