Lore drops concerning Dragoon via the Heavensward Opening:
Val replied to Zelmanov's topic in RP Discussion
There is a fine line between fantasy and absurdity. Only one of them makes for good role-play. Pretty much what I stated above. Yeah, you can RP being able to fly around and be an awesome guy that can do backflips and cartwheels in plate armor. ...But should you? Ever? -

I don't think RP has to be 'fair'. It's not a competition. I feel quite the opposite. No, it isn't a competition, but yes, it does have to be fair. If someone runs around RPing a Midlander Super Saiyan, I'm going to ignore them. If a dragoon leaps into the air and rockets down at supersonic speeds, only to instantaneously change direction on a dime? I'm going to ignore them. Not only is it not "fair," but it is entirely against any sort of laws of momentum and physics ever. Yes, we have to distill belief of certain things when playing a fantasy game, but the laws of motion still exist. -

I agree with a lot of this, actually. If a character has been doing nothing but training all their life in that respect, then yes, it is entirely possible. But a lot of characters don't, and a lot only begin later on. You do raise very good points, only we can't assume that everyone RPing their character in their early 20s as a Dragoon did absolutely nothing but train all their early years, especially those that are elite dragoons and can cast spells/heal/whatever. -
I try not to knock people for doing that. However, I also recognize that a lot of the characters doing super flashy things in Final Fantasy games are the main characters--of which I will stress again that we are not. As for being stomped on by a dragon and how the game envisions a high level character, I think it's best to separate game mechanics and RP. Otherwise, your character never gets tired and they can run forever and so on and so forth.

Well, you are already limited by the game itself simply because the character creation (and thus, your in-game representation of any given character) is also limited, so I would question a premise like that right off the bat simply for lack of tools with which to do so. But yes, obviously there is a sliding scale for this sort of thing. The more outrageous you go, the harder it is to get anyone to buy in to the premise. In this case, however, your hyperbole does you little credit as obviously no one would ever even attempt that in the first place. I see your point but it will never happen, and anyone in their late teens (the much more common scenario) is, quite frankly, enough of an adult that I can see it happening even if it is rather unlikely. At any rate, you might change your mind if you actually read such an amazing story with a series of events crafted in such a way that you cannot help but accept that the way things turned out are the way they should have been - could have been, even. The fact that you reject the idea simply means that this has yet to happen. A shame, but I'll not lose any sleep over it (more because I'm not the one who needs to please you more than anything). That's definitely stopped people from playing children before. Oh wait. ...no it hasn't. ..And this, again. I'm going to go ahead and say the younger your character is and the more skilled they are, the more they lean toward mary sue-ish tendencies. I only say this because typically the only young people you see that are exceptional at any sort of skill are the main protagonists of a story, of which none of our characters are. People may disagree with me, but that's just how I feel about it. A 12 year old prodigy that can do special moves works well when they're the main character of the story. ...But we aren't, so I don't see how it's remotely plausible to defend. -

Correct me if I'm wrong, but considering that fire is a plasma, would it not be possible to generate flames so hot that they take on the form of lightning? And I'd imagine the mudra would work two ways: Either a direct elemental call from the sky, as seen, or taking the element of lightning into the body to discharge it however the Ninja sees fit.

She always refers to Val-pal as the grumpy cat :v

Shirtless Val serving drinks to people? Sure.

I'd say for a gladiator, just dive out of the way. The jump is only one directional, or.. well. It should be. Classic anime tropes of being able to change direction on a whim instantaneously aside, it should be very difficult for them to pinpoint a target that is at least aware of their situation. I've said this a million times before, but I feel that dragoons are meant to fight dragons--like in Heavensward. They drop down on large, slow moving targets in order to make an impact. That's their whole purpose. A much smaller, faster target will be a lot harder to hit. For your last paragraph, I plan on RPing Val's ninjutsu abilities more along the lines of geomancy. It's stated in the lore that the ninja borrow the aether from the objects of the world around them, so if he's not around a source of water, he can't use anything related to water. Unless, of course, he melds the various things together to create water, which is more or less the aetheric manipulation involved in casting mudra. I plan on that taking a lot longer. Ninja also have the Shukuchi ability which I think is a bit OP and I've never used it (or any other mudra abilities for that matter) in combat. Why? Because Val's a ninja, or will try to be. He's not going to run around showing off his skills and telling everyone he's a ninja. Anyway, back on topic! Shukuchi's lore states that the caster physically melds two spaces together in order to instantly teleport themselves to that space. It doesn't say it has to be a space that they can see, nor does it state that it has any limitations on movement--all we have is the in-game limitations that are put in place strictly for balancing purposes. Taking out the limitation and using it more as an instant transmission-styled move, the caster still has the ability to teleport themselves into walls and the like, so it'd be pretty dangerous to use without being able to actually see the location anyway. However, the possibilities of its use in combat are pretty extraordinary. It states in the lore that the caster cannot change direction during the movement--they just appear at a different place. This means that if someone is being thrown north, even if they teleport somewhere else, they'll still be going north at the same force and speed they were originally being thrown. I won't really go further into detail with this unless asked, but I think the implications as to what is possible with this is pretty clear. I also try not to limit my character's abilities to in-game spells. I imagine Ninja could do more than shoot lightning from the sky and breathe fire, as well as gladiators doing more than just slashing swords (and paladins in regards to their light-based skills).

I.. wasn't really able to attend long due to this competition thing. I did, however, go bar hopping with some old college pals and managed to find one that brews its own beer in the bar. It was pretty wonderful.

Your Character is now a Cards Against Humanity card. Which is it?

Val would be "Deflowering the princess." -
He sounds awesome! He can be pretty fun We'll have to RP so you can meet him sometime!

Val would probably try to sleep with my girlfriend behind my back, or just flaunt it in front of me. Prick.

As far as streaming goes, I'm good with whatever! I'm actually going to be out of town the next few days. Streaming isn't necessarily a requirement for me, but you're welcome to pick an evening that either myself or Faye are online =) I think we both trust each other's judgement enough =)

How does your RL reflect into your character?
Val replied to Branson Thorne's topic in RP Discussion
I'd like to think that most of our characters have at least some part of us in them, no matter how small. As diverse as my characters are, from the spectrum of Val being only in it for himself to Cyrus wanting to do everything in his power to help people and Melfice wanting to just study them in general, there are small quirks and traits that I've given them that I share with them. As for history, I try to keep my personal life history out of my roleplay, and there are certainly some decisions that my characters make that I wouldn't have done. -
Of course it's happened before. As we grow as a community, in this game and others, we will eventually develop friendships with our peers and form mutual bonds. It doesn't have to be a relationship; a close friendship is enough for most. There's people I met back in Vanilla WoW that I RPed with and am still in contact with to this day. We may not roleplay, but we do chat at each other on occasion. With such strong bonds comes the inevitability of being hurt, knowingly or unknowingly, by the other person. If I'm aware that they'd intentionally doing it, then most of the time I just drop them. I don't care to associate with people that go at lengths to willingly hurt me and people I know. If I know that it was an accident, I try to look past it. People mess up. That's just a fact of life, and I understand that. As for how I deal with it? That also depends. Losing friends is rough, especially when it's someone you've known for years and you talk to on a daily basis. I tend to just try to busy myself by finding other things to fill that void/gap that is suddenly there. Going to the gym, playing other games, trying to find other people to hang/do things with, anything really. I personally suggest any sort of physical workout, as it will help you feel better in general! I also try to talk to the individual about it if it's someone I care to keep around. Sometimes you have to be willing to give them time, especially if it's a mutual falling out. If not, I do what I can and try my best to move on.

Compliments Galore! Compliment The Poster Above You!
Val replied to Y'lani's topic in Off-Topic Discussion
Erik works hard for the community, and it certainly does not go unnoticed! I'm very thankful for him and the ball that he's putting together. I only wish I could attend ;-; -
Wheee I love you both! Sadly I'm going to be mostly busy this week preparing for a trip, and I know I've said I'll get back to most of you, but hopefully after this week my coursework will begin to die down and I'll be able to meet up with all of you!

Leanne, pls

My character Vallois is actually pretty into it, and Val wanted to get one done for himself and his lady~ It would be really fun to do sometime!

Val would be involved in some sort of underground fighting thing. Daytime job? Nothing. He'd lounge around and do absolutely nothing if he could help it. Melfice would be a shady CEO/company owner. Cyrus would make a career of the military.

I don't think that really much matters, or that it should be kind of a given considering they're saying that real gil will be involved. I personally don't mind throwing gil out to people that take the time to formulate a well-done RP event and try to help thrust the community along. I love supporting them =)

I think the general and overall message was that a lot of the same event over and over throughout the community will eventually grow stale. As has seen with a few recent events, hardly anyone participated and most just didn't go because, in my opinion, the community as a whole is getting tired of it. I know that I certainly am, and provided there's an event I can actually go to when work and school allows it, you can bet I'll try to be there.
