  1. Thank you for the swift reply. Unfortunately, my excitement for the character and this direction demands something much more immediate! Definitely appreciate the interest though!
  2. I thought the implication was that she was blind. Matoya cautions her against seeing through aether and how that saps your life force. I thought the idea was that the trip through the aetherstream or the forbidden spell blinded her, and this whole time she accompanies you she's using some kind of aether-sight. Also, yeah Ixali seem to have been manufactured by the Allagan's, but fell into disuse because of genetic instabilities. Presumably the same genetic instabilities that caused their loss of wings. My current pet theory is that similar to the Titans and their creations in WoW mythos, the beastmen tribe were crafted service workers for the Allagans.
  3. I'm looking for someone who is currently roleplaying a master of the Darkside to teach my Elezen Knight, and help him begin that path. Help him become a Dark Knight. My character, Jullienaux Sintierre, after a series of unfortunate events finds himself in a very dark place emotionally. He is ripe for the transition, but I would like to roleplay out the journey. If you or someone you know roleplays a master of the Darkside and would like to engage in some fun Mentor RP, then please let me know so we can work out the details of their meeting and go from there.
  4. As others have said, it's stated outright during the questline that she's a halfbreed. As someone who roleplays a male Half-Elezen, I am embarrassed to admit that I squealed for longer than I should've when she appeared on screen. I may have also yelled "Look at her ears, look at her ears!" About a dozen times.
  5. Yeah, that's what I figured. There's a long way from the circumstantial evidence you picked up on to -confirmed.- I was watching like a Hawk trying to confirm that theory that Dzemael is a Gray house, but if it was there I didn't see it. No, it seems to me that part of the reason the Duskies feel they have it better in Ishgard is because that distinction between the clans seems largely a southern concept. Ishgardian Elezen are neither Wildwood nor Duskwight, specially the founders and nobility. I think the four major houses are also neither Duskwight nor Wildwood, they're Ishgardian. Is there one House that's more friendly towards the Duskwight diaspora? Maybe... We have to keep looking.
  6. I think Balmung's character creation has been outright closed temporarily.
  7. Hey, can you tell me where it was confirmed that Dzemael is a Duskwight House? I must've missed that. I was on the lookout too.
  8. That's fine. We all do that, and the concept you've presented is crazy enough I think most people would make comments about it to their inner circle. That's natural. I agree with what you're saying. What I'm trying to say is that to have your character know flaws in the person's stance if they are roleplaying a Level 1 kung fu master based solely on the number displayed when you Examine the person or Search them is metagaming and in my opinion should be frowned upon for those more concerned with a pure storytelling aspect. At that point, where you are assigning flaws to their concept based on level, then no longer are you just saying that's not my style and going off to roleplay with others more in line with your tastes. At that point, you are making your concept override their concept, not by thinking that they are crazy, not by thinking that they see flaws, (that's okay) but by knowing that they have flaws you have godmodded your way above their concept and have disrespected it, and them. That's what I'm saying should not be done. That's not quietly removing yourself from the situation, that's actively pooping on the concept. It's much more directed at what prompted my renewed involvement in the thread. A situation in which a lowbie roleplaying a kung fu master is examined, determined to be low level, and then roleplayed with as if they were unquestionably a novice based on their level. Which brings me to this, I meant examine. But let me bring this around from our misunderstanding to being more in line with the thread and my opinions. ICly judging a character based on how they IC'ly look. Two thumbs up. IC'ly judging a character based on game mechanics like level or OOC achievements. Not cool, and staunching of creativity. (I know a lot of cool people that could probably roleplay some badass uber powerful people, but would never touch Coil. I don't want to limit their creativity because they don't have the time I do." @Faye and Graehem. I think you guys are misinterpreting what I'm saying or perhaps I did not make myself clear. I'm quite tired from grinding in HW. There's a line between making quips and being a dick that should not be crossed. That's all I'm saying. I agree with you two, and I'm as much a lore nazi, and as picky as they come. I'm just not a dick about it. The situation presented by Dogberry seemed to cross that line to me. That's all I'm saying.
  9. Yes. If you're a level 1 Pugilist, in my eyes, your character is a level 1 Pugilist. To me, metagaming and godmoding is claiming your character has abilities it clearly doesn't have. If you can't be bothered to level up a job to at least a level where you can pull off a look that fits the job beyond "freshly made character", then I don't see why my character should recognize the skills yours claims to have. If you're going to RP a character and not level them, why even subscribe to the game? You'd probably be a lot better suited doing forum RP. Gaia Online is over there, bro. Emphasis mine. If I misjudged and you did not see the second part of that question, then we've been going along different paths here.
  10. Can you show me where I said this? Damn man, now you're asking me to go back through all these posts and I'm hella lazy. Here it is though.... "Yes. If you're a level 1 Pugilist, in my eyes, your character is a level 1 Pugilist. To me, metagaming and godmoding is claiming your character has abilities it clearly doesn't have. If you can't be bothered to level up a job to at least a level where you can pull off a look that fits the job beyond "freshly made character", then I don't see why my character should recognize the skills yours claims to have."--Dogberry @Melkire I did not mean ic'ly respecting them. Roleplaying right bastards is fun as the seven hells, I meant more.... respecting a person's creation. It's a creative endeavor. People create a character they like and are oftentimes proud of. I think despite if you like it or not like it you should respect their creation. It doesn't mean that your character shouldn't be a right bastard if they would think so IC'ly, just that you should not be a dick about it. It's a slight difference. The difference between emoting that your character thinks the person is crazy, and emoting in narrator voice that the person is crazy. As I said, slight difference, but one of those respects both characters in the scene, and the other one steps and poops all over that person's creation. Do you get me?
  11. As to the first half of your post, I think we simply see roleplay differently. I see it as more pure storytelling and you see it as more of a hybrid of gameplay and storytelling. That's fine, live and let live. As to the second half of your post, I think somewhere along the line you must've misunderstood what I was saying, I'm assuming that by your play of words you're hinting at an instance of me metagaming. That is quite frankly impossible in a discussion wholly outside of the game and roleplay. I don't think you quite understand the concept. All I was trying to say is that I don't think people should take levels as a metric for nearly anything, but specially not IC power. But even if they do, then they should specially not go ahead and godmode that the character has flaws because you inspected them and they are low level. My point by displaying my own character is showing you the inverse. My character is (was) max level nearly everything, but I roleplayed him as an average swordsman with no other skills. The only way you could know this is through my emoting. The opposite should be true as well. That's my point, character's shouldn't assume people with all 50's are gods, and people with one character at level 20 is a novice. Either way is bad, because either way is metagaming, and you specifically have stated that you will hands down emote that your character sees flaws and can outright know the person is a novice. Not by judging their emotes, or making a value call based on their clothes IC'ly, but by inspecting their character and declaring because of that OOC knowledge that your character knows they're a novice. It is my opinion that that is an egregious mistake to make in a storytelling format. Specially if we're trying to be respectful of each other's characters.
  12. This is one of the most ridiculous things I have ever read on this forum. How does your character even know the person is level 1? What even is level 1? How do you know its not a Kung Fu master using a Weathered Hora? What if it is and you just went and assigned a bunch of flaws to their stance and literally wrecked the person's intended character. That might be what they mean to you, but they have slightly more concrete meanings... When you roleplay your character as having information that by the story they should not have then that's metagaming. Like knowing they are low level because you inspected them. Godmoding is when you establish factors as truth and become the sole determinant of the outcome of a story. Like flinging a punch and making sure it lands by putting it in your emote. Like saying that your character can see flaws in another character's stance despite whatever they are emoting. You can't really determine why people want to pay 15 a month and play this game. A person could pay 15 a month to sit and look at the Forgotten Spring kitties and be fully within their right. I don't know where Gaia online is bro, but here's my character. Would you assume he is a god amonst men? I wouldn't.
  13. I think this is probably the most interesting statement in this thread. Personally, I RP to construct a story with other people, as a cooperative project. I don't "RP to win", but I know a lot of people do. I believe the issue of "IC power should be reflected by OOC power" stems from this - it gives at least some defense against someone who simply wants to "win" the RP. I personally don't give a hoot about someone's OOC levels, however. For me they're neat because they allow someone to wear certain RP outfits, but I fall firmly into the camp of people who let RP determine IC power. That said, I also tend to avoid RPing with people who are simply trying to "win". RP is a cooperative enterprise. You have to be able to trust the people you're RPing with. If you can't trust them to do things for the good of the story, then why are you RPing with them? This exactly. My thoughts in word form!
  14. So because the character is wearing weathered horas he's going to see things wrong with his body mechanics. Not just assume, nor think he sees, but literally you're going to assign wrong factors to the other characters mechanics because you know that that is a level 1 weapon and you've Inspected his level to be low? There are names for that kind of behavior in RP. They're metagaming and godmoding. The journey can be roleplayed without game mechanics.
  15. In my opinion, roleplaying in an MMO is at its most enjoyable as a creative interactive storytelling activity. OOC achievement is as irrelevant as all other OOC things. Out of character. Not applicable. For me, the mechanics of the -game- in which you roleplay should be kept completely separate from the stories we weave. The mechanics and rules of the game are set so that you may enjoy the particular experience the Developers have set out for you. That's not what we're doing when we roleplay. We seek a different experience. We're enjoying a different activity, a game of interactive storytelling. In this game, the only rules we need take into account are the rules that bind the world in which we're telling our stories. The lore. My character does not see a blue plate above your head with your name nor can he poke you and know everything you've ever learned. That is ridiculous. All that my characters will ever react to is how your character looks, smells, sounds, and feels as you present it to me in your emotes. Your imagination should not be limited by how much time you can put forth into the game. For me, as others have said, I will only quirk a brow at lowbies because they imply two things, a lack of lore knowledge and a lack of commitment to the game and so I'm hesitant to engage and roleplay. Otherwise, if I know the person is a good storyteller, and is telling me their level ten thaumaturge is a bearer of the Ancient Wazasu staff and secrets of the Kupaganaga peoples, I will roleplay accordingly, and if conflict ever develops in the story we're weaving, then I will emote according to the power of the character I've created. His own background, experiences, and training. Together we will tell a cool story, and have a good time being creative. Game mechanics be damned. I don't rp that all rogues must have two daggers, nor do I rp that a person versed in Thaumaturgy finds it physically impossible to pick up a gladiator's shield, nor do I rp that a person must hold their weapon at their side, nor that all women must ride sidesaddle. These are game mechanics, and they should never come in the way of your storytelling.
  16. Cool idea! Here's some fan-made headcanon lore for the Boar tribe that I made up for my own character that might appear on a list like this. "The Boar Tribe has a peculiar disinterest and dislike for the short bow thinking it the weapon of cowards. Instead, they rely on spears fashioned from boar tusks with which they charge and thrust at game. While not often successful, they believe this to make them stronger and in so bring them closer to their totem. This practice, along with other self imposed handicaps, routinely culls the tribe down to a small, but fiercely strong and stubborn core."
  17. This is a good idea. I am keeping a lore-tracking thread on my FC's forum. I have taken SO many screenshots of dialogue - which I keep on doing - which I then piece together in spoiler tags for later reference. I'd appreciate it if you shared some of those dialogues you found interesting. That'd be awesome.
  18. This is extremely exciting. Maybe we should have a spoilerific thread with things like this we pick up on.
  19. If you're asking if you're going to get shit for using an overdone trope? Probably depending on how well you roleplay it. If you're asking how much? Who knows depends on the crowd you play with and who your friends are. Should you care? Probably not, unless you do, then you should. <--- Wisdom. @Hauntmedoitagain Of course you perceive the negativity to be centralized in the RPC. I believe that is because this is a public forum for discussion, and here people are free to discuss their ideas and opinions no matter how upsetting they are to some of the listeners. In game, if I pass by someone roleplaying Cloud reborn, Slayer of Thrall and Garrosh, I'll shrug and move on to roleplay with someone else who is more my style. In the forum if someone asks me what I think of someone roleplaying Garrosh and Thrall slaying reborn Cloud I'll happily say I think that's an awful character and in my opinion wouldn't open yourself to a lot of fun roleplaying and writing opportunities. I think a lot of good comments here. Eorzea is a dangerous place, the prospect of losing your parents and being adopted is more than plausible. If you have a unique character, and you can really bring that identity to life in a fun way. Go for it! Will it lump you in a category with a certain stereotype of cliche'd characters with cliched characteristics? Yup. Does that matter? Maybe. Up to you. The game's RP community is robust enough that you will through a bit of searching find people who like to roleplay just as you do, and that's the beauty of it. Live and let live.
  20. This. I think everyone saying that some of the tidbits are sort of out of left field should really think about the greater implication that the practice has on the clan. For example, I saw someone say that the one where they carry their elders on their back was small and uninteresting. What!? That's representative of huge reverence for elders and wisdom. That's super interesting. They probably have rituals and traditions to honor their elders and a million other things if you think about it. And I have been. I've seen other efforts too to bring a sense of diversity like the Xaela have to the Miqo'te tribes, but because the main thrust of the lore is sex-based, most people play it that way (partly because it is safe and partly because of other reasons), whereas with the Xaela, there is so much more to latch on to to deflect that -- and after 51 beautiful examples, an open license to "create anything." I would have loved even just a quarter of those 51 examples to have modeled possibilities back when our lore first emerged. It's an old topic and I know I won't change opinions about it now. I couldn't in the advent of 2.0, and I don't expect to with 3.0. My focus now is on the beauty of the Xaela tribal lore, and the hope that these will serve to model to the remaining miqo'te the world of possibility open to them outside of mating practices. Yes, yes. As I was reading these tribes I sort of felt vindicated in my choice to have my character's Ba' Miqo'te tribe have its own tribal gods, believes, customs, and traditions. I was reading Xaela tribes, and getting excited for them, but in the back of my mind I was saying... Yes! SE recognizes that different tribes will have different ways of going about things!
  21. For my Xaela alt, I will be choosing the Dotharl clan. I will be going Dotharl because they are specifically listed as 'extremely' violent. I mean there are other tribes who war annually and still other tribes with very savage practices, but the Dotharl are known as being exceptionally violent and reckless in a race of warring nomads. To me, this means these guys are the equivalent of sadistic psychos hence why they can never rise as a clan. They are recklessly violent and die often. I think some of the tidbits are deeper than they seem if you consider the implications that they have on the rest of the culture of these clans. The Dotharl train their young from very early on to not fear death. It is a culture of recklessness and savagery, it is an extremely warped warring clan on the end of the barbarity spectrum. They're not just violent like all the other nomadic warring people. These guys are known to other warring and violent people as extremely violent. It's like spartans looking to another warring culture and saying "those guys are badass." You know it's something special. When I thought up my character, I thought him up as a bandit, a sadistic hedonistic psycho, and so Dotharl fits perfectly. They revel in massacre.
  22. http://xivdb.com/?quest/67110/The-Past-Is-a-Story-We-Never-Tell <- click on dialogue If you want the dialogue of any quest, rush on xivdb That... that is amazing. I never knew that. Thanks!
  23. I think it's clear to me that if Elementals could simply turn off succor a lot of their actions wouldn't make full sense. Certainly, the new nefarious ways of obtaining White Magic mentioned in Las Vegas would be irrelevant since you know even if you get it through your nefarious brilliance... first elemental that spots you is going to turn it off. No, I think they take a much more hand's on approach to policing the use of Succor by hiding the art away, being extremely selective of the practitioners, and slaying whoever doesn't follow the rules to the letter. I don't think we're due for some large scale Elemental's go HAM greenwrath in the future simply because of the aforementioned weakening due to the Calamity. They're in no position to rage. Unless you mean the very far future... like in seven expansions.

    FFXIV Lore Q/A

I think that's partly true, and certainly a big part of what entertains me as a lore nerd is discussing the grey between the lines. And boy, does FFXIV have grey between the lines... With that being said however, there is an immutable, non-debatable core presented within works of fiction, and certainly presented in our chosen game. A term like lore compliant -should- mean abiding by that core. Though I admit it can be corrupted and twisted into meaning anyone that abides by the the core and the particular set of interpretations of the person. Unfortunately, this happens time and time again. Regardless, on topic, people are free to roleplay or -not- roleplay whatever they wish. I agree that discussions over lunch about lore with the localization team while interesting and awesome should be taken with a grain of salt, and as they themselves pointed out what they said is subject to change. With that being said, I think what they said about fantasia potions is pretty much what most people I know reasoned of their existence. To have a world where fantasia's function the way they do mechanically without any catch is ludicrous. The fact that they are never mentioned by any NPC or quest or FATE or anything really is a big hint as to their place in the world in my opinion.
