Ugh. Ad bots are trying to get more clever/aggressive it seems. Got two PMs myself. I may have to implement PM restrictions for new registrations -.- To reiterate though, do not click the link in the PMs.

Bump to remind that this is tomorrow. I am not expecting a huge turnout (especially with a total of 3 events going on Saturday around the same time). Which is good, because it's not meant for a huge turnout anyway . And to answer the above question, reservations are not necessary. It's just a first come, first serve thing. Just show up with the tickets that you purchased off-screen from the vendor and you're good to go. It should be noted that it's not advised to be late. Once the ship ICly leaves dock, there's no way to really join in.

This may likely come as a shock to many, as I've not discussed it with a single person as of yet in order to avoid dealing with external influences. But it's something that has been on my mind for an extremely long time now, as far back as 2011 actually. As of this upcoming spring, I will be stepping down from the role of RPC administrator. As stated before, this is something I had intended to do for a very long time. At one point a long time ago, there was another administrator set to replace me before said admin left the game and disappeared. I have yet to find a suitable replacement and have continued to put the decision off over and over and over again. By officially announcing this timetable, putting it off will no longer be a possibility. Even now, I was trying to come up with excuses as to why the timing of this announcement would be better suited for later. But by putting it off further, I'll just keep coming up with new excuses later down the line. So I figure it best to get it out now. I want to stress that this decision has absolutely nothing to do with any kind of drama or fallout with anyone or any groups whatsoever. It is simply a personal decision that has been put off for a long time. When I set out to create this site, I didn't do so for selfish or baseless reasons. Nowadays, it's easy to see people rush to make new RP coalitions the second a new MMO is announced. FFXIV's RPC was a very different case and was much more of a building process than many. When XIV was first announced in 2009, the concept of a RP coalition was still relatively new to many RPers out there. Sure, there were a couple pre-existing ones for other games (Aion and Everquest II to name some). But the concept wasn't full blown at the time. And a lot of the XIV RPers were coming from XI, where they were used to being isolated for up to 6 or more long years. I still recall how cautious many FFXI RP groups were when I approached them with the idea. My reasoning was simple: I didn't want a repeat of XI's small and fragmented Rp community. I wanted to see XIV thrive with numerous unique groups interacting with each other on a daily basis. And I firmly believe we accomplished that in spades. The RPC will be hitting its 4 year anniversary in February. And I feel it quite appropriate to end my tenure shortly thereafter. Four years is a long time, and I couldn't be more proud of what the RPC has done and accomplished. The fact that we stayed alive during the mass exodus of 1.0's players was amazing, and the fact that we made an unrivaled comeback with ARR is mind blowing. I know not everyone has necessarily agreed with decisions I've made in regards to the direction of the site. But I hope people at the very least respect the decisions and perhaps see why I made the choices I've made over all these years. The community as a whole has always been at the forefront of my mind, even now. The fact of the matter is, my passion has withered to a point that I can no longer sustain in regards to being the site's caretaker. And I don't feel the community should ever have a caretaker that doesn't have such passion. I keep a watchful eye on other MMO RP coalitions, and I see the barren wastelands they become due in part to negligent admins who abandon the game and, by extension, the community associated with it. While I have no intention of abandoning the site, the game, or the community anytime soon, I just feel that my time at the helm of the wheel here has come to an end. I don't have the time, the energy, or the devotion that I feel necessary to keep the site in top shape. Everything I do lately feels more like an obligation than something I get excited about. And the community deserves a caretaker who has more passion and energy than that. In the coming months, I hope to have many discussions with the rest of the site's staff and with all of YOU as I search for a proper replacement for RPC admin. I hope that, together, we will all find someone who is not only devoted and passionate about the game for years to come, but also someone who has the skills, energy, and knowledge to maintain the site for as long as they possibly can. More details on the transition will come at that time. In the event that I am unable to find a replacement who fits my own criteria by the deadline, I will leave the decision solely in the hands of the mod team. It has been an amazing ride. For those who have been here since the beginning, you all know the many evolutions we've gone through and the drama that we've endured to get so far. I'm so privileged to have worked with so many of you in helping to make this site what it is today. I wouldn't take any of the experiences here back for a second, as they have helped me grow in ways I never thought I could. While it may be impossible for me to keep up and read every single post like I used to, it still makes me super giddy to see the forum so bustling with life on a daily basis. I look forward to seeing it continue to prosper in the years to come and seeing what new direction it may take. Please note that this change is still a good 4-5 months away, and I have no intention of slacking off in the meantime. But I had to set the timetable now or it would never actually happen. Thank you all for your myriad of contributions to this site and community, whether such contributions be large or small. I could not have asked for a better community to shape what we are today. I sincerely hope nobody sees this announcement as a 'bad' thing, but rather a new chapter in an ever expanding story. I encourage everyone to give their full support to the future new admin so that the RPC can continue to thrive for years to come.

Probably should have mentioned this in the original post, but maybe a separate post is good for it. This event will not be moderated much at all. Aside from the possibility of putting a cap for attendance in place (which I sooo hope I don't have to do), not much else will be moderated OOCly once the ship disembarks (IC moderation from the ship's captain is another story though ). Rpers will be left to their own devices and will be largely responsible for their own content. Just wanted to make sure nobody had any high expectations for fancy games or whatever

((Sorry in advance for hastily made flier >.>. The previous fancy one turned out fugly as heck lolol. Fliers can be found primarily in Limsa and Ul'dah. Yup, screw you Gridania!! >.>)) OOC details--

Stickied. Saw a Gilgamesh one as well but it seemed more of a question rather than an OP that was being updated (unless I missed another one). If someone on Gilgamesh wishes to make and update a similar thread, I will sticky that one as well.

Unfortunately, I have to agree with Armachia and J'hared. RP communities are known for two things: Maturity and drama. Sounds a bit odd seeing those two terms together. But both are true in some way or another. As a RP linkshell/company leader, you have to automatically understand people will hate you. I guarantee every single RP leader on this site is hated by at least one person, even if they don't know it. Heck, that extends to any leader really. I've made numerous enemies in the RP community over the years spanning all the way back to FFXI. At first, it bothered me like it seems to be bothering you. But eventually, you just shrug your shoulders and move on. Because sadly, you can't MAKE someone like you or agree with you. The biggest thing you have to remember is to not "run away" every time you see drama. The best course of action is to simply face it head on, deal with it, and move on. Too many times, I see people (even in our RP community) see the slightest hint of drama and run for the hills. All I can think is "Really? You can't handle this? How do you make friends in this community if you're always running from the community? Especially when drama happens -everywhere-" So just soldier on and don't worry so much about what others think. You're entitled to run your group however you see fit. You're also entitled to your own opinions and Rp style. If people want to cut you off entirely for that, that's their loss and they'll have to live with the long term consequences moreso than you.

Alright guys, the name-calling needs to stop now. I've counted numerous instances now and have let it slide. But it's only making things a million times worse. The server issue has always been a hot button issue and it's understandable that people are very protective/invested in their respected servers. But any and all name-calling is uncalled for and only escalating the situation. This thread, as it stands, has a 90% chance of getting locked right now. We'll be monitoring it and any further personal insults that are hurled will result in warnings being issued.
-
Alright guys, let's not turn this into another infamous server vs server thread please. Recent comments make it seem like it's heading in a bad direction

There was a dev post last week regarding switching a character's city-state, and they have confirmed that is indeed likely coming in patch 2.1 ^^

Sort of. It's probably not what one would be accustomed to if they used the Vana'diel Viewer. But the present XIV one is here: http://xivmodels.com/

Merged with appropriate thread. Quoting OP so they get an alert regarding this merge~ Please feel free to look at the video in the original post for any questions about this matter

I've removed the public warning from my post, as the intended party has already seen it and there's no need to drag that out into a public spectacle. Those who saw it, please refrain from dragging it back up. Furthermore, I want to make something perfectly clear as it's becoming an issue on the forums as of late. Opinions are 100% fine. Everyone is welcome to disagree or have their own view. That's what a hub is all about after all. But seriously...everyone needs to start watching their tone and choosing words more constructively. I don't know what other MMO sites people are used to posting on. But these are not the beta/official forums and I will not tolerate blatant disrespect of ANYONE. Argue points, not people. Insulting someone personally for a different viewpoint will not be tolerated. And if it comes up, report the post immediately and we'll deal with it as necessary. Furthermore, people need to stop getting so defensive when people have a differing view from their own. That's been a problem for a very long time now and it's ridiculous. I'll be bowing out of this thread for its own good right now, though if I see personal insults of any sort, they will be swiftly dealt with. Please focus on the content when arguing. And I implore people to read their own posts before spamming that reply button. Thanks, and apologies to the OP for this thread getting to the place it did. @Freelance: Yes, yes I did. I stated that in one paragraph in that section "My advice is: blah blah blah." I also stated at the start of the post to take the advice or leave it. Taking rest of conversation with you to PMs to get out of this thread~

Public warning removed, as the intended reader has already seen it and there's no need to drag it out in public. Furthermore, I did not belittle anyone. Stating people aren't reading is not an insult, it's a simple observation. And it's very possible they skimmed the post and didn't read it. On to the actual point though, I did not say anywhere anything about "censoring" MMO activity. The point of that advice is to advise people to focus on advertising the MMOs they were in that -mattered-. If you played one for a couple months, listing it is probably not a necessary thing to do, as other people do not know that you played it only briefly and do indeed assume. Yes, "people shouldn't assume." But they do. That's life. And perception is 9/10ths reality in many cases. If people perceive one as an 'MMO hopper,' even if they're not actually one, it's going to change how they react to that person to some degree. It's no different than real life. If someone perceives someone to be a certain way, it's going to change how they act around that person, even if their perception is way off base. I don't know why the "big names" keep being brought up. I mentioned it for one purpose only: to illustrate that a lot of the people who were active on this site for a very long time aren't as active now due to the reasons I listed. I've spoken to some of them and they've pretty much admitted to this. No, you don't have to RP with "big names." That was not the point I was making. I was simply making it clear that there are other people who have this view about MMO hoppers. That's it. You clearly do not like my advice in this particular arena. That is fine. As I originally stated, people could take it or leave it. You seem to want to leave it. That's your decision and I respect that. But arguing it endlessly isn't taking this thread anywhere, and is in fact making things much worse the longer the argument goes on. It's clear you don't like what I said, but what I said is reality. It is what it is. That's really all that can be further said on it.

I told you how it could be combated in my first post...I swear nobody reads anything these days
-
I'm sorry you consider the word 'rude' as a personal attack, but I do consider judging people only on circumstantial evidence as an impolite thing to do. It is a personal attack. End of story. Had I seen it used on anyone else, I'd say the same thing. It's not welcome on these forums. Period. In regards to my comments about "others," keep in mind I've been around for 3 years. I talk to a LOT of RPers, and I'm faaaar away from being alone in my thoughts. Would you have preferred I said nothing about the issue and let some people keep wondering why some RPers seem to purposely brush them off? You don't have to like the stance, but it does exist. And better to be aware of it so it can better be combated, yes?
-
I was RPing with someone briefly last night and he was able to see his post (in /say) but I couldn't. He eventually just sent me the post in /tell. It seemed to only do it with long messages in this instance. So it sounds like some kind of bug.

If they're "devoted to the game," then they wouldn't fall into the category of MMO hopper to begin with, would they? Perhaps this is about a miscommunication about the definition of the term "MMO hopper." In my eyes, MMO hoppers go from one MMO to the next, never devoting themselves to any one for any long period of time. If one is devoted to a game, whether they play other MMO's on the side or not, they're probably not an MMO hopper (at least not to the game or games they're devoted to).
-
My primary issue with the alternate "opinions" so far aren't the differing opinions themselves, FYI. It's the blatant name-calling. "Asshole-ish," "rude," etc. That's the only part that is 100% uncalled for. And it needs to stop. Other than that, your opinion, whether I agree or not, is perfectly fine. The number one rule on these forums is showing respect. And those kind of comments are simply not respectful in the slightest. Edit: Some of the snarkiness is also unnecessary.
-
I'm getting really tired of the defensiveness toward this, as amusing as it is. Point is, I'm allowed to have an opinion like anyone else. And I'm allowed to opt who I want to RP with and when. I never once attacked anyone MMO hopping. Read my post again. Seriously. My point was that OTHER people see a huge list of games on your record and yes, they DO assume. That's human nature. My advice in this arena was to only advertise the major ones, not the other ones someone spent minimal time is. Take the advice or leave it. But stop getting defensive over it. My opinion on the matter will not change either way. Sorry.
-
Watch the namecalling. I don't take kindly to be called "asshole-ish" and it's against the forum rules. So don't do it again.

I see this problem all the time. There are always people, usually newcomers, who struggle to "find" RP. Below is going to be a wall of text that you may or may not find helpful. I've been involved in XIV's RP community since 1.0's pre-launch without any break, and XI's RP community before then for 5-6 years without a break. While my general MMO experience may be lacking, my RP community experience is something I'd hope people would take seriously. I'm sure some may not even agree with some of what's below, but this is based on my experience. So take it or leave it, it's up to you Unless you're established in the community (and even if you are), RP takes an amount of effort on your part to find. It will very seldom just fall onto your lap. Bad Advice Vs Good Advice I see people constantly give advice to new RPers to help them "find" RP, especially on these forums. Quietly, I usually facepalm because the advice is BAD and rarely works in ACTUAL practice. Here are two examples of common bad advice people dole out to "help people find RP." "Walk instead of run. This will indicate to others that you're likely a RPer!" "Throw out a random emote every now and then, like humming or something to that effect. This will show people you're a RPer and possibly start something up!" /facepalm These don't work, folks. And when they do, it's super rare. Here's why. Those examples DO signify that you're a RPer, but that's it. They don't break the ice or give an opening for another RPer. I see someone walking around and humming? OOCly, I'm like "oh, cool. A RPer." ICly? I don't do squat. My character isn't going to jump up and start conversing with some random person just because they're walking around and humming. Sorry. Doesn't work that way. It's way too forced for most RPers and makes no sense IC. SOME may do this. Most do not. Here's some GOOD advice that does work. I personally use these techniques myself ALL THE TIME without fail. Keep in mind some of these techniques may not necessarily work for the more rigid characters, but the majority of RPers can probably use these. Bumping: This means exactly what it sounds like (and is often a two-step process). You literally emote having your character not paying attention and physically bump into another RPer. This will force the other person to respond to you in some way or another. Depending on the response, you may need to work a bit harder to get something continuous going though, which leads to... **The Apology: "Ugh, sorry I spilled some of my drink on you. Let me make it up to you by buying you a drink?" Or "I'm so sorry. I wasn't paying attention. My mind is all over the place due to blah blah." This -usually- leads to an extended interaction with the target. The Commentary: "That pet is adorable! Does it have a name?" Or "Ugh, why did someone bring their pet pig into the hot springs? Is that even sanitary?" Or "That's a nice outfit. Where did you get it?" Commenting on random little things about another character that grabs your character's attention can be a great icebreaker for RP with the target in question (or even unintended targets). The Failed Meeting: "Are you the goldsmith from the guild by chance? No? Damn, the bastard was supposed to meet me here half a bell ago. Looks like I got stood up." The Tell: Exactly as it sounds, you can simply send a tell to someone you want to RP with and tell them as such. "I really like your character and your RP style seems similar to mine. Anyway we can find an excuse to get our characters together for something soon?" And then work out the circumstances from there. These are just some icebreakers to get things started. But I can tell you now that I've personally used every single one of them in some manner or another. And they work every single time without fail. Of course, you need to put forth some effort to keep the interaction going but that's much easier than getting it started. Freelance Versus Linkshell A lot of people, especially new people at launch time, tend to choose freelance RP over linkshell RP. There's nothing inherently wrong with that. But...it doesn't work for everyone. No matter how you spin it, freelancers have to work twice as hard to find RP most of the time. Unless you're an established person in the community with a myriad of resources to pull from, this isn't an easy path to take. Being a freelancer means you need to be capable of pulling from a myriad of IC and OOC resources to get a healthy amount of RP (assuming you like to RP frequently anyway). You're not likely to have such resources if you're virtually unknown like many in this thread are (no offense intended of course). So if you opt to freelance, you need to be prepared to work like hell to get the RP you want. It will not be easy, and most of the work falls on you. Attend every event you possibly can and use some of the icebreakers I mentioned above with random strangers. If this proves to be too much work, it is highly advised to join a RP shell and build up your resources that way instead. Even this method will take some time though if you're an unknown player/character in the community, so be prepared to put forth some amount of work either way. But a linkshell is a bit easier in allowing to create resources for future RP. MMO Hopping Yeah...I have to touch on this a bit. Sorry. Nowadays, the MMO market is saturated with titles all over the place. Back in the day, putting forth a big list of MMOs you played was seen as a good thing. Endgamers were like "oh snap, this person has vast experience." Rpers were like "ooooh, lots of different RP environments this person was in." Nowadays, there's a gradual change of attitude toward that. Word of advice: Stop listing tons of MMOs in your welcome posts and/or applications to linkshells. Keep it minimal. Why? Because nowadays, someone sees a huge list and thinks: "Yikes, this person is all over the place. They're going to probably jump ship to another game in a few months so I don't know if I want to invest much of MY precious time/energy into them only to potentially get screwed over later..." That's exactly the train of thought I personally have in the RP community myself. And it seems to be a growing sentiment with a lot of RPers I talk to, like it or not. MMOs, unlike single player games, are generally supposed to be long term commitment games. So some of us long term players see the game hoppers as detrimental to the long-term success of our individual characters, thus avoiding said hoppers like the plague. Personally, my character was DESTROYED in 1.0 when everyone important to his storyline left for "greener pastures." It took me nearly a full year to recover and get to a good place again. This happens to a lot of Rpers these days. Someone who plays your sibling may jump ship, leaving a gaping hole in your family tree/storyline. A lover may drop off the face of the planet without a word, leaving a gaping hole there to fill. Or just some random person who may have got involved in a complex storyline disappears and you needed something from them to advance the current plotline. So yeah, MMO hopping is becoming more and more frowned upon by RPers (and maybe even endgamers to some extent). People aren't going to invest in something that has little chance of returning anything back. That's just the way things are becoming nowadays, like it or not. So advice here: Only publicize a handful of MMOs you played. This goes for Enjin too. Enjin makes it SUPER easy to track a person's track record. So exercise caution on that site especially. I can literally find almost anyone on it and their past "hopping" trends. Your reputation follows you from one game to the next nowadays . Speaking for myself? If I see you have played a ton of MMOs or have a HUUUGE listing in your games list, I'm going to purposely limit my interactions with you to casual conversations only. No storylines at all. I know that sounds terrible, but you have to try to put yourselves in the shoes of the opposite party and understand how the hopping directly and negatively impacts us. Anyone notice how the 'big name' RPers in the community have largely vanished from the RPC recently? I have. Wanna know a big reason why? Because the flood of new people makes it impossible to discern who's in it for the long haul. Thus, it's difficult for these people to invest too much in the current threads because to them, it may just be a waste of energy. The people who showed up on these forums only within the last couple months are most prone to poofing from the game in the next couple months, and the 'big name' people know this. If that's not a clear sign of how serious people take the MMO hopping issue, I don't know what is. Obviously, nobody can stop hopping. But just be aware that people are starting to look at it very differently than they used to when it comes to RP investment. Invest in Others RP in MMOs is not all about you or your character. People don't like always being just support characters. You need to be willing to give others your undivided attention when they want to do something with their character. Doing so will mean that they will likely return the favor when you want to do something with your character and move along your own storyline. You are not THE hero nor are you THE villain. There are many heroes and villains all around you. Give them due consideration and they will almost always return the favor. Long story short, sometimes you have to be willing to relegate your character to "support" role. In fact, that'll happen more often than not. The easiest way to do this is to either create RP events that focus on social interactions between others or even simply just attend them and make an effort to mingle with a set number of people. It's important to not overstretch yourself though. Too many interactions can make it very difficult for your character to hone in on more in depth relationships with other characters. Don't Give Up People seriously give up way too easily these days the second something doesn't work out how they want it. This was so incredibly evident at the gala event. A lot of people were frustrated at the 200+ attendees and just left. While it's understandable to be overwhelmed by that, these people likely shot themselves in the foot and missed out on a lot of opportunities throughout the night after things calmed down. On the same page of that, you can't get frustrated over your first few failed attempts to make IC friends/enemies. It happens, even with established RPers like myself. Sometimes, circumstances make it difficult to get involved in a certain scene. Or some RPers/characters just may be more secluded than others, or they may be simply overstretched as is. Or they may not even be IC at that time due to some ongoing storyline (they may be ICly in jail, or sick, or so on). So find a different target. And then find another one if that one fails. Or another if necessary. One should be persistent in their search. In summary though, you have to be willing to put forth effort to get any results. RP will almost never just fall into your lap unless you're highly established as a character/player in the community (and even then, it still doesn't always just happen effortlessly). Like any investment, you get what you put in to the community. Those who stick things out tend to be rewarded the most for their efforts in the long run.
