  1. fun fact: There were no jobs when FFXIV 1.0 launched. They were added in patch 1.18 iirc. (When Yoshi-P took over) Yeah I know, but that's what I'm referring to: why 1.0 tried to make an MMO out of classes that have not existed in the FF franchise (save for Archer) just seems strange in hindsight. What ties the FF metaseries together are the iterations of common aspects of the world and themes - the apeparance of jobs is a well established tradition in that respect, and particularly suited for use in an MMO
  2. Magitek comes from the Garlean Empire, but is not exclusive to it any longer, Cid has made Magitek a bit more widely used in Eorzea (the ironworks armor and weapons are magitek), and the Machinist looks like it might use Magitek to some degree as well. That's true, but that also strikes a similar chord as to the prevalence of Succor, Black Mages, Scholars, etc in-character. Even with the the armor and weapons Cid's created - ignoring the fact that they are achievable gear within a video game - I can't help but wonder just how common place and accessible they are in-character (read: expensive to buy and also expensive to keep maintained). It's not like Cid's Ironworks have so many engineers that they can mass produce magitek as to create such a large supply that the cost of owning and maintaining one becomes affordable to a commoner or possibly even well-off adventurer. A magitek prosthetic in that regard seems like it would be an uncommon and highly expensive contraption to own. A clockwork prosthetic seems like it would be more accessible (although the popularity of the magitek concept is likely because it just sounds cooler)
  3. Wouldn't a magitek prosthetic be more of a Garlean thing though? Ceruleum in Eorzea is limited in application since they are not as technologically advanced and predominantly only used for airships, right? It was my understanding that the Garleans developed more advanced applications for ceruleum which is why they have magitek. Not to say a non-magitek prosthetic can't be used of course; as it's been mentioned they've been around in the real world for a long ass time...and besides Eorzeans did figure out highly advanced clockwork technology (Hi mammets) so I don't think it would be a stretch to have a clock-work, non magitek prosthetic would it?
  4. lol the jobs are such a hot-button topic: SE really should have just done away with the starter classes and the "unique revival" stories of the end-game and stuck with classic full-on FF jobs that people could take from the get-go. It'd save us RPers and lorebuffs a headache
  5. A lot of people don't play their literal job/class in character, so as it's been said, most people whose job is technically white Mage actually RP as just being a conjurer. It's not hard to hide the white Mage class abilities. scholars are a little harder though which is said but that's opening a whole 'nother discussion over how weak the lore is for arcanist/sums/scholars from an RP community perspective. As an example though my main is a warrior and a scholar as his primary jobs but he is neither in character (he isn't a scholar or a member of the Marauders guild who discovered a soul stone and the powers of psyched out barbarians). He's just good with an axe
  6. Hi I was kicked for inactivity but I'm on at least three times a week
  7. Our characters live in a world where technology and magick are nearly one in the same in terms of how they are used and their functional purposes. I don't necessarily think that someone who uses a glamour is tapping into some intrinsic magickal power, but could very well have a device that is doing this just like a glamour prism but engineered for people. With regards to the heretics though I agree with Sounsyy. Dragon mojo
  8. AOL Chat Rooms, and the old text-based MMOs Gemstone and then later Dragonrealms. That was - what - when I was in Middle school about 15 years ago? *shakes cane at all the whippersnappers*
  9. Saelzbroda which means "salt brother" in the Roegadyn old tongue (character is a Sea Wolf)
  10. Doendraga is a smuggler himself and captain of a ship out of Limsa Lominsa so you're definitely not the only criminal out there! ;-) maybe we can even work out a business relationship? After all in there line of work it's all about networking lol I'm also working on connecting him with people who work in the "procurement of specific goods" as well as fencing so we can help each other branch out. I'm MST though unfortunately so I'm about 7 hours behind you but if you see me hit me up! I'm on as Doendraga more often then not
  11. MORE! Give us more! I want my characters to have wardrobes like Cher Horowitz from Clueless!
  12. Doendraga occasionally punts Lalafells off the pier and distracts Miqo'te with laser pointers...is that wrong?
  13. I don't RP Doendraga as any in game class; he isn't a member of any guild nor is he carrying around a soul stone with the ancient wisdom of barbarian warriors trapped inside (I felt like the job lore was so "chosen one" feeling that having it as a common thing where people are just walking around with magic henshin stones kills the setting for me lol) He just knows how to f%#$ people up lol His actual profession is captain and smuggler (though the latter is on the DL)
  14. It'd be great if SE gave us an up-to-date timeline. As much as the protagonist does in the MSQ so far I would hope this hasn't all happened within the span of a year lol although I'll admit that until we do get an official date Doendraga will be unaging like a vampire/Nicholas Cage
  15. The whole game mechanic of job swapping is going to muddle and blur believability and logic, which is unfortunate since both are important parts of any setting or world's lore... Namely it makes all the abilities look too easy (i.e. here's a staff and BOOM you now know magic and can throw fireballs! But don't worry, I gave you this bare of knuckle dusters and now you can also use martial arts and have the strength, coordination, and stamina to beat up a monster in a fist fight!) and this is why I personally veer away from the hybridization of classes in MMO RPs unless an aspect of the setting such as a specific class or profession itself - with its established lore - is intrinsically a blend of different attributes. Doendraga is not, and will never be, a big hulking melee fighter...who also knows a little magic on the side BUT ONLY if you give him a cane with a shiny stone on top of it lol Looking at the lore of conjuration and thaumaturgy you can already see examples of where you have to jimmy rig the lore because the two don't blend together, and this is why I think, as Sounsy pointed out, you don't see either discipline of magic being used at the same time by a single person in game or ever referenced as a possibility: the catalysts that are required for example, differ on an existential level as well as the literal sources that their respective magicks feed from. These are possibly two of multiple variables that define why conjuration is like this and why thaumaturgy is like that... Take their elements for example: water, earth, and air are more primal in nature. Fire, Ice, and Lightning, however, are less primal because they are the the product of reactions within other forms of matter; while you can find cold everywhere obviously, you cannot have ice without water the same way that fire cannot exist in a figurative vacuum (it needs fuel, or something to "burn on top of"), and lightning is a full on product of complex chemical reactions in the upper atmosphere and cannot exist without said conditions to enable it's existence. None of thaumaturgy's elements are wholly independent because they need other elements or conditions in order to exist. None of thaumaturgy's elements are "building blocks" of the natural world as a result like conjuration's elements, since water earth and air are not the results of other elements undergoing change. These are static and "more natural" in the way that there is no stimuli needed to allow water, earth, and air to exist. Being broad elemental forces, they simply are. Perhaps this is why conjurers can harness water, earth, and air (because it draws upon the "stable nature" of their environments), while thaumaturgy which taps into the self in order to reach into the void wields "dynamic" forces of fire, ice, and lightning (elements of change and flux/chaos). That's always been my way of rationalizing the difference between the two, at least. No MMO is going to into such great lengths in crafting their lore that you have to understand the philosophy of the metaphysical in order to understand how magic is portrayed...cuz you know, people don't play MMOs to read lol But that's what I mean by my perspective of the two not working on a philosophical level, and based on what lore we have had access to, philosophy is a big part of the magick we see in this world. Maybe this is why you never see a character using both conjuration and thaumaturgy, and there is never even a reference of someone knowing both. My advice: look to see if it's referenced in-character by NPCs or done by NPCs. If its not, then it probably isn't possible. If you have to look for loopholes then it's usually a sign that you're trying to force a square peg into a round hole (lore-breaking)
  16. Unnamed, go to Melkire and fix the laptop so we can all get back to the Carrion Underfoot plot :-p
  17. Doendraga HATES birds, and outside of their occasional usefulness (i.e. homing pigeons) or role as food, he avoids them all together. A lifetime of watching seagulls crap all over the place, and pelicans eating...well...ANYTHING they can fit into their mouths (he once saw one try to eat a Lalafell) has convinced him that all birds are filthy, soulless monsters.
  18. I'm a heavy RPer, and loremonger, but even I don't believe in letting the in-game classes - or really ANY game mechanic - decide your roleplaying or story. This IS a video game, which means it will have mechanisms in play that do not seamlessly bleed over into a believable narrative. Even games that try to do this usually just muck it up more and break immersion such as everyone being able to teleport or having magic-power items that enable them to teleport, etc etc. Basically, when in doubt, go for realism/believability. From my experience, some people choose to RP the job guilds as things their characters are apart of: they RP being a member of the Marauder's guild and then also the Archer's guild and knowing some magic from the Thauamturges guild... Others don't: they respect and adhere to the world-lore, of course, but they use it to paint realistic and believable equivalents (i.e. just because you use an axe doesn't mean you're a "Marauder" and a member of the Marauder's guild as if they own and patent all axe-ownership and axe-usage in the entire world). Fortunately this game's crafting professions ARE in fact classes in game so you can get away with playing a blacksmith because it's an actual profession that you can select. Tinkerer...that depends on the definition you are using. If you're using the pop-culture video game defintion of tinkerer then you're talking about machinery, and there isn't an in-game equivalent of that so you'll want to find one of the other jobs that has the closest "appearance." Most RPers won't hold you to your in-game class/job.
  19. I always thought Balmung was a good mix of US/EU RPers. The majority of RPers I've met on Balmung aren't in the US, but maybe that's just been my experience (I always curse a little since I'm MST lol)
  20. Name: Doendraga Barabharsyn World: Balmung Character main class/job/role (Optional): Warrior/Maurader Cards (recommended): The Hanged Man Reason for Card choice (recommended): The Hanged Man symbolizes sacrifice, and life through the destruction of the self. Doendraga, while no chivalrous martyr, has surrendered much, and harbors a great many secrets that have altered his life irrevocably from what it once was; the costs he has shouldered have paid for the lives of countless others. Tumblr name (optional):
  21. Dude, if you can find a place on the internet where people don't go critical-mass-emotional and turn everything into politics please let me know so I can live there lol
  22. Have you considered using a character transfer so you can keep your character? The issue with trying to RP on a server that hasn't been made an RP server by the community is that you'll see other RPers leave more than join: they're going to go to where the activity is.
