How to find the balance between overpowered and underpowered?
Kaiz replied to LadyRochester's topic in RP Discussion
That sets a rather high bar to those who want to RP with you, though, doesn't it? In the case the WoW Shaman, if you wanted to have a conflict of some sort with the other player - does that mean that you're limited to only people who have been playing the game as long as you have? A sort of required "veteran status" to be able to have their character fight yours on equal parity? It's a dilemma. It's wholly unrealistic to limit rp to only other veterans (since those are radically outnumbered by non veterans). That aside it's also unrealistic. Like it or not, people aren't equal IC or OOC and no amount of twisting reconciles that because it goes way deeper than what a player says their character is or is not capable of. Equal parity shouldn't be expected between unequals. But that ultimately means the character is basically overpowered and it really depends on the RP community whether or not that flies. Some players have the reputation and tenure to just be permitted to be overpowered. -
How to find the balance between overpowered and underpowered?

There's a flipside to this too. The longer a character has been around, the more 'powerful' they become simply on account of their cumulative experiences. Any combat oriented character who has been engaged in combat oriented rp is going to loom like a powerful veteran of war when you list down all the stuff they've survived through. I have a shaman in WoW who's been around since launch, and if I paraphrase his backstory and IC accomplishments through rp, he just looks blatantly overpowered without the ten years of context. -
How to find the balance between overpowered and underpowered?
Kaiz replied to LadyRochester's topic in RP Discussion
Being overpowered is generally about self-satisfaction, and few other players will enjoy your character more for being overpowered. Everyone, however, whether by admission or not, loves when someone else plays second-fiddle to their character. So the question of being overpowered or underpowered is ultimately a question of how do you want to be received by other players? Accessories are more popular with other people than prima donnas. -
Oooh good catch. Right in the first line too. Fixed that, thanks.

I post the only screenshot I have of my character before the servers went down! It's all in that roguish expression! (Yes, I've used this picture everywhere since it's the only one I have so far )

I was actually thinking I might do something like just make up gibberish words that sound like the sort of thing that Xaela look like they would say, and then send whispers to whoever I'm talking to with the translation. At least when talking in the racial langauge while around others who wouldn't understand it. I feel like Xaela would have a language with a lot of short words and hard consonants. "Dahk, na. Ko vra nai, dra ke? Kah, lo vos, va." Something like that. Might be too tedious to come up with made-up words on the fly. edit: Of course, with their horns able to pick up very specific sounds, and having tails, they might use a lot of really subtle gestures and body language as part of communication, so the actual sentence structure might be very short and simple with nearly as much conveyed without words.

https://wiki.ffxiv-roleplayers.com/pages/Kaiz_Kha I just put up Kaiz's wiki profile, and was hoping people could look it over and see if anything is out of place or contradicts the lore. Stuff like the moving plants was just a guess since I imagine the Steppes to be very slight on plants (moving or otherwise) so it seemed like the sort of thing that would be strange to him. It's pretty brief still. I'll add more to it as roleplay inspires me to expand on certain ideas so there isn't a whole ton to look at just yet.

[*]I. Basic Info Characters:Kaiz Kha Primary character:Kaiz Kha Linkshells:Excellent Roleplay, Remnant OOC Primary RP linkshell:N/A Character Profile Link: https://wiki.ffxiv-roleplayers.com/pages/Kaiz_Kha [*] II. RP Style Amount of RP (light, medium, heavy): Heavy RP, but at the same time I'm new to the game and I'm having fun exploring Eorzea, so I spend a lot of time questing and leveling. While not technically IC, I consider all my leveling time to be 'IC' and can jump into RP anywhere I am, so if you see me fighting or questing or whatever, it doesn't mean I'm OOC. Views on RP combat and injuries: I like fighting. Kaiz can get pretty beat up, but I have things to do before I kill him off, so he'll survive one way or another. Views on IC romance: More than welcome, though I can't promise someone won't beat you to the punch! Views on non-romantic RP (family ties, etc): Also more than welcome. Kaiz's 'family' is the Kha tribe, so anyone from that tribe can assume to have met Kaiz, and we can work out some background connections OOC if you like. Just fire me a tell and we'll figure things out. Views on lore: I don't know enough of it to comment! Views on chat functions (/say, /linkshell, etc): I generally am pretty open about this. /Say and emotes are considered IC, but tells and party chat can be IC too when the need arises. Currently none of my LS chats are IC, but the FC I'm in is IC chat. [*] III. Other Info Country:Canada Timezone:PST Contact info:Fire me a private message if you want to get a hold of me. I don't really use any messengers, so it's basically text, facebook, email, or Steam otherwise.

Okay, cool. I was thinking something a bit like broken english, or more just shortened and simplified, mostly just using the most critical words to get the point across. I just wanted to make sure that would make sense.

Different languages do exist, but most Eorzeans speak in a sort of common tongue. There are some niche ones like Dravanian, and others like the Ancient seawolf tongue that are relics of the past (except for their names). However unless your character had some sort of special upbringing, they'd likely have no issues communicating with others regardless of where they are from. Hm, okay. So it sounds like it would be feasible for a Xaela, being isolated tribes, generally, to perhaps not speak the common tongue as well?

4: As attractive as your character is, my eyes are always fixated on my own character. I'm sorry. I know you're pretty but... I'm just prettier. Nothing personal. Honest.
-
As title. I would assume there are, since there are races like the Au Ra that have been isolated from the other races of Eorzea, and there are beast tribes and what-not. I haven't seen any official confirmation of it, however. Do different languages exist, or can everyone communicate clearly?

Does everyone hang out in a HW area now? I haven't done any HW stuff yet.

I want people to RP at the Bismarck. It's such a trendy place to eat. All the cool kids eat at the Bismarck.

balmung Traveling medic/researcher looking for friends
Kaiz replied to Siwonshi's topic in Chronicled Connections
I think her and Kaiz could pair up well. Kaiz is a wandering Xaela from the Kha tribe who is interested in exploring Eorzea to learn new things to bring back to his tribe one day. He's a sort of pugilist/hunter/survivor with a lot of wilderness experience. -
What If Your Character's Backstory Didn't Happen?
Kaiz replied to Sounsyy's topic in Character Workshop
Curiously I'm pretty much in this state for real. I was asked to fansatia my character and he's got the same fundemental traits as he had before but now he's a completely different person so I now have to come up with a new backstory for what is otherwise mostly the same character. -
1: I often enjoy the idea of roleplay more than the reality of it. 2: I'm fully capable of forging massive and wild story arcs but I deliberately fill up my time with random tedium so that I don't have to and then I expect others to do it. 3: I often use RP to fill social gaps IRL.

Make some new connections! Get involved in a storyline outside the norm. Shake things up a bit.

Final Fantasy is pretty over-the-top already. Characters can be pretty crazy and will probably fit the setting more than anything. I haven't done any RP fighting in this game, but I would expect that my character could realistically do most of the things he does in a battle.

New character looking for connections and LS.
Kaiz replied to Kaiz's topic in Chronicled Connections
Thanks for those links! That one on the naming conventions is particularly neat. It's so cool that the devs would actually provide that insight for the community. Super cool. -
I just started the game on Balmung after having not really played since pre-ARR and I don't really have any rp contacts in game. My character is an Au Ra male who I'm still figuring out a profile for (don't know much about Au Ra unfortunately) but I want to get into RP right away! I'm looking for people to to meet and an RP linkshell to join. I tried looking through the linkshell page but I'm more interested in the size and style of the group than the specific theme of the LS. At this stage my character is still very malleable so I'm sure he can fit in anywhere.
-
Well, my character profile is in my signature. He's a sort of traveler monk with a mysterious past. He generally hires himself out as a bodyguard and likes to be on the road a lot. I'm not really sure what 'kind' of character he is. A bit in the gray area of morality. He's a good guy as far as anyone knows, but he has a dark past and it can show through sometimes.

I came back to FF14 a few weeks ago, but I've had a hard time getting in contact with any RP LSs or FCs that really fit my character. I also can't say that I've seen a whole lot of RP around, other than seeing a few convos now and again at the bar in Ul'dah. Looking at this site, it seems like there is a vibrant and active RP community, but if I had to go from game experiences alone, it would not seem to be the case. Maybe I'm just coincidentally dodging RP in some comic spy-vs-spy fashion? I don't know. So is there just a small community that I'm unable to find? Are there specific RP hubs people tend to gravitate to? Is it all LS/FC-based? I find my lack of RP disturbing. It must be corrected.

I'm pretty new to this game, since the last I played was early ver 1 and the game is so different now that I'm basically re-learning everything. I haven't had any experience with the dungeons yet, but it's something I'm sure I'd be interested in (if they're anything like dungeons in any other MMORPG). I'm mostly just looking for people to actually play the game with, since everyone I knew from back in early ver 1 either seems to have left or doesn't really remember me. Any chance there's room here for someone who's still figuring their way around?
-
I'm interested in joining, mostly due to the pvp theme. However, I just came back to the game recently after having not played since early version 1, so I have no idea how the PVP works in ARR. I also haven't naturally progressed in my storyline to Girdania quite yet so I don't really know what the current story around there is. Should I hold off on an application for now, or is the Corps open to new players?
