In the end for me, lore is a good framework to work within but when some things just don't make sense [ Like a warrior -only- using an axe? Warriors have never ever tried using a sword? ] I tend to stray towards 'Does it add or detract from a good story to enforce this'. When writing feels lazy and sloppy I'll call it out, but minor nitpicks are something that I've never payed much mind to because it doesn't really detract from a good story.

How do you guys go about pulling off your "twists"
Valde replied to Zelmanov's topic in RP Discussion
Good foreshadowing is all of it. Subtle hints that tie things together and while on their own seem trivial, when brought into a bigger picture they make everything suddenly cohesive. My favorite are hints that can be interpreted many ways, and suddenly you cinch it another and people are truly flabbergasted. -
While I won't pretend other's Soulstones don't exist, I've little interest in RPing my character having one. It's just another means to an end power wise, and with so much drama concerning an RP characters power, skill, and the soulstones themselves I'd rather enjoy telling a story without that added problematic item.

It's nice seeing I'm not the only one that feels this way. I've actually been having trouble getting into RP as my character because I've had to 'redo' his backstory once I realized I was not a huge fan of casters in this game outside of healing. I'm narrowing down the field on what's aesthetically pleasing and works for my RP elements and hoping to eventually settle in and enjoy a character that feels cohesive to me.
-
I tend to be the same. I started MMOs as a minmaxer and eventually began to RP as a creative outlet and to help add longevity to games I enjoyed. However this translates into me playing classes where 'efficient' meets 'fun' and sometimes that class conflicts with the original idea for a character. I was curious if I was weird for altering the RP around my character to suit what I enjoy in PvE rather than simply just sorta.. going with it. Perhaps it's more applicable in FF14 because of the glamouring system too and getting appropriate looking gear for my character that's sensible to me/his RP.

I've been struggling since I started playing FF14 to find a 'main' class I enjoy and can RP at the same time. While I'm not going down the winding discussion of jobs and soulstones in RP, I'm a player that likes to connect his PvE with his RP. I find that enjoying the aesthetics and feel of a class and tying that into my character helps me create a better connection for that character's story as I write for them. Am I alone in this, or is anyone else out there as ardent about that connection as I am? It's so much that when I started playing the game and wrote Isaelt as a BLM ICly, I ended up tweaking that because I simply could not stand the BLM playstyle.

Also: How many of us tidied our desk up a bit before taking a photo?

lots and lots of practice, I do quite a bit of work from home which doesn't help but more often than not the media lay out goes as such: Furthest left (KVM'd to media machine as well) primarily for monitoring, runs temperature monitors on the various devices in the house, keeps track of the u/d on stuff, as well as a copy of error reports I get. 2nd Left: Contacts/references, Skype, Discord, IRC, TORchat. Typically also move stuff like compiled crafting requests from Garland DB for supply missions there. This is the one that usually has the most stuff on it, even at the best of times i'm monitoring something. Middle: Primary media be it FFXIV, GIMP, ect. Right: Active Media/referance. If i'm doing Comm work or something this'll be where I have reference art, if i'm grinding its usually playing some Freakazoid or R&M. Of course i'll also do a stretch screen across the middle 3 if I want to do some more panoramic gaming/work, but thats fairly rare these days. I suppose if I had more monitor real-estate that didn't make my gfx card curl up and die I might do the same. Extra info to always have up is pretty stellar. I still find myself alt-tabbing to hunt down things

Four monitors. How do you even manage?

Here's mine! Spoiled with double monitors. http://i.imgur.com/DOKPUKj.jpg

I have massive anxiety about joining an FC after a few poor experiences, but I really want an FC with a good crew to settle into so I can share my character's story with others, and help others tell theirs. I want story telling without the people, but with people? I have a strong need for my PvE class I 'main' to match my RP and this has led to me altering RP concepts to suit my class more than once. Isaelt was originally envisioned as a dark themed BLM and has transitioned because I realized I just am not a fan of the class. I find myself wanting to change my character looks when I see a massive amount of people with similar appearance. I ditched the white hair on my character as soon as I saw so many had it, despite it being a tribute to a far older character.

It's interesting to see how many people don't act on their 'crushes' for a variety of reasons. It makes me glad I'm pretty aggressive with RPing with people in general, and that I've met some people who are of a similar mindset.

These sound less like pranks and more like really mean hazing poor newbs.

The Official "I Have Nothing to Do, Entertain Me" Thread
Valde replied to Branson Thorne's topic in Off-Topic Discussion
I don't even go in until 5 here, so count yourselves lucky! Though I did just have a two week vacation. -
In queue for Battle at Big Keep now (likely going to have to requeue for it after I get home from work) and overall the moments of funny were worth the mild tedium it had. I enjoyed it as a diversion and am glad I saved it as the 'last' thing I needed to do before tackling Heavensward. 9/10, worth it for the Manderville Dance and Gentlemanly Pose.

I'll take an invite if the LS is open as well! Ingame: Isaelt Haragin

It's more a general thing, I think. And not just unattractive as in 'Good looking'. Models in the game, and clothing, are sized across everyone and many outfits are not exactly tailored. I went through the races in my creation menu and put them in their job clothes to get a feel for what I might look like down and road, and while that woefully under-represents options in the game it showed me that male Roe had weird body proportions with a lot of things and it often made their heads look small on their frame. All that together pushed me away from them and towards the more slender races. (I started the game as an Elezen and now main an Au Ra)

I have a feeling I've missed out on some PVE stuff...
Valde replied to Riven's topic in FFXIV Discussion
http://ffxiv.gamerescape.com/wiki/Guide:Progression_and_Level_Locked_Content That link was my guiding beacon, and still is, for things I've missed and needed to unlock going 1-50. On Balmung you'll wait between 30-60 minutes to run the Crystal Tower Raids on non-peak days like after reset. Completing those raids does give you access to a repeatable weekly quest that lets you purchase Ironworks weapons without doing Coil. I still haven't tackled Coil yet myself but short of Odin, the Hildibrand Quests, Moogle Quests, and Ramuh EX and Shiva EX I've managed to do all the old 50 content. And the relic weapon of course which I just started. To me I wanted to experience as much of the old content on point as I could before I dived right into Heavensward. -
Lore Question: Soulstones and how to acquire them.
Valde replied to Lumizumi's topic in Lore Discussion
This isn't as accurate as I would like, unfortunately, if we go by game lore. The BLM Soulstone is given to you specifically because it's rare and you show potential. The Dragoon Soulstones are guarded by Ishgard, so anyone outside of them will have trouble acquiring them. Monks are held by Ala Mhigo, and for Dark Knights there isn't even anything discussing them, you just happen on one (which can make for interesting RP if you go this route as well. Just random DRK Soulstones laying everywhere apparently). There has been discussion before on the feasibility of acquiring a Soulstone ICly or whether it'd simply be easier to just not restrict yourself by game mechanics and RP your character acquiring power in different ways. After all, who says Soulstones are the end-all be-all for progression other than game mechanics? -
Lore Question: Soulstones and how to acquire them.
Valde replied to Lumizumi's topic in Lore Discussion
The PLD 60 quest touches on this a little more. You can find a video on youtube if you want to see all the dialogue, but basically it shows that soulstones have their own form of sentience and can even interact with each other. The relative power of the stone is proportional to the soul of the one currently wielding it. I won't watch the video as I don't really want spoilers, but this is interesting to know. That while there may be memories to draw from and learn, and our own to put into them, that a Soulstone reflects the power of an individual means that they aren't just blatant tools to push someones ability into an extreme. At least, that's my interpretation. -
Threw you a request on Skype to get you invited!
-
From my experience playing the game so far, they're there and revered to an extent, but it's not a hugely pervading thing sans the more drastic sections. As was mentioned before things like Ishgard, the Black Mages, and Ala Mhigo with their reverence for their respective gods are when you see it become blatant. But aside from the occasional poor expression concerning some poor deity's balls I haven't seen much to suggest that it's a hugely influencing factor for many. That's not to say it isn't there, but perhaps it doesn't have an overwhelming impact. It could also be more important, or less, depending on the city? I would suspect Gridania's huge focus on balance with nature and the elementals to have a more robust worshipping practice than say Limsa outside of superstitious pirates? The argument can easily go many ways though.

This was a really great event, and very smoothly operated. One of the first 'larger' events I've attended in any RP format and really enjoyed myself. The Event Organizer's flexibility was really welcome as well, as myself and a few others had no idea of the event until it was mentioned by a friend within our Linkshell and we all sorta showed up to see what was going on. I would definitely attend in the future!

This was a fun little thing! I'm glad I stopped by and look forward to it again
