  1. There's corn and sugar and there's isolated gridanian villages so there's most likely booby-trapped moonshine stills. A fun thing you could do is make up labels for the alcohol that exist in your inn... like quarry stone ale, grand moose beer, arrr ts rum! (Obviously from limsa), blazing sun spiced wine from uldah...
  2. After thinking about it, this is most likely too restrictive and focused. I know there are more people than just me who play medical-oriented characters, so how about some sort of "gridanian medicalsociety"? This could be like Network of doctors and conjurors and even simple wise-women/men. A place to come and share new ideas for treatments, showing off the new wonder_drug... and even snake-oil salesmen could sneak in to add some drama and conflict. Not sure what I would call this, it could also encompass uldah and limsa for a international network. If anyone has any other ideas please post them
  3. Animals arent susceptible to many of the same diseases we are. They have their own diseases for the most part. Like ferrets can get human-flu (lol Im not making it up), and people can contract if from them. They can share a lot of medical conditions though, like leukemia, pancreatitis, heart defects and so on. Chocobos being avian, I don't think they would, since birds don't really contract anything from humans, unless youre spreading chlamydia or a flu virus...
  4. Would anyone be interested in a fc and/or ls (or both) apothecary service? I was gonna call it narrow Branch Apothecary or somethhing like that. Connected to that I had the idea of a veterinary service for our c hocobos. I'm a vet tech irl (even tho I work in a factroy right now). Since we can have our mounts out without being on them, I thought this could be a lot of fun. Typing this on my phone that's why its messy.
  5. I just logged in, no queue, no waiting, no 1017...
  6. My job is incredibly boring. So much so that I often space out and end up daydreaming for most of the day. lol ...I sit in a chair and inspect parts for defects if you're curious. If my imagination wasn't going full-tilt 90% of the time I think I would have died of boredom. SO what that means is I spent all morning thinking about this future-plague event (after lunch there was just a dialtone in my head ). it occured to me that birds are extremely dirty. They carry all manner of diseases including Chlamydia (so dont kiss your parakeets). And what do we have in the Shroud that is avian, aggressive, and most likely full to the brim with communicable diseases? The Ixal. Our Typhoid Mary or Patient Zero could have been infected by one of the Ixal, cut, bit, spit up, drank some tainted river water near an Ixal home... The poor wretch could have even gotten bit by one of the vermin that's most likely living on one of the beast-folk. Fleas, lice, mites, chiggers, the eggs of such vermin hatching and infesting the victim. All of these are potential ways of spreading a virulent disease. The disease itself I thought up a long time ago for my own fantasy setting. We don't have to use it, but it could be a springboard for something else. It's called Stripping Fever, or Whipping Fever, because it leaves bright red welt-like rashes on the body like the sufferer had been whipped repeatedly. It's like an aggressive and potentially fatal form of poison ivy. It's spread by mites and fleas who carry a bacteria that *loves* human skin. It spreads rapidly because it's insanely itchy, but it takes 1 to 2 days for it to start itching (incubation time). When it does start spreading, it leaves the stripe marks and causes a high fever, delirium, dehydration, and if it get's severe it can cause blindness or deafness. If left unchecked for more than a week it kills the patient. Disease is spread only by touch, it can be airborne, but without a host it dies really fast, so it's not a concern. If the patient dies of the disease they have to be burned and buried or the bacteria will just turn to spores and set up camp elsewhere. The bacteria is killed by the use of a salve made from a plant I made up called the Phoenix Lily. It basically cooks it, and probly more to it, but I never thought much about it. After that is taken care of, the fever is just a normal fever unless it's progressed into severe stage, then it needs more intense medical care than just feeding the person food and liquids.
  7. I could just imagine what the cities would look like with *thousands* of afkers litering the walkways. You wouldn't be able to see the forest for the trees. lol
  8. I would very much like to be a part of this... taijha could even be patient zero, or typhoid mary! She could be running helping out tending the sick and going out for herbs and spreading the disease without knowing it. I think it would be kinda be interesting to have the source of the epidemic in the midst of the community helping out trying to save everyone. It doesn't have to be her of course... but it would be interesting. I would be just as happy to play one of the infected, or stay healthy and help find a cure.
  9. Freelance, those lore scenes and such were what I was referring to as well, and there's that scene after Tam-tara where the elezen berates the poor healer for sucking at her job... As for the aetheryte business, it makes me think of that recurring x-files them about how people are actually made of stardust and we all go back to the heavens as stars when we die. Anyway, this is a fun thread, please continue, but I need to get to bed... I'll read more tomorrow, and that thread on medicine.
  10. Heres another one: For an IC use of Raise and whatever the Acn version is called (cant remember), instead of raising the person from dead, have it be advanced field surgery or something. The person being raised could just be severely wounded and unconscious. Of course Tai would most likely fail at this spell and probly kill the poor patient... but it's an interesting idea, and makes use of an ooc-only spell.
  11. I read... Tai is level 16 cnj. It was her starter class actually. I was thnking about that when I wrote my OP, and I'm really happy that SE put setting tidbits in the game like that. Arcanist magic seems to be a mix of Asian wizardry mixed with Western wizardry with all the talk of geometrical designs and the use of grimoires and such. But I still think you would need to have some understanding of biology to heal properly even with Physik.
  12. I will gladly sacrifice two days if it means severs are unlocked for chargen as well. I've been waiting since the last day of beta to make a character on Gilgamesh.
  13. Having just mentioned this on the RP crafting thread, I wondered what everyone else's thoughts are on "a wizard did it" as far as magic and healing goes? I know, in the game that magical healing is talked about by the npcs, I think even in one cutscene they went into detail about how healing is done magically... But I never liked using magic, divine or otherwise, being used as the cure-all for health problems. It's too much of a crutch, and it takes away from having General Hospital-like drama stories lol. Even in good scifi shows like Star Trek, they don't magically cure everything with science. Plagues still happen, diseases spread, and cure still have to be developed. I made Taijha to be a healer or a support-healer, because I love that type of role. But I don't want her to be some magical band-aid that swoops into a village and waves her hawthorne twig or whatever it is (oak maybe?) and the plague goes *poof!* Healing magic should be a band-aid, not life-saving surgery, or if it is used for such, the healer should feel some sort of negative effect from it, empathic feedback, or something... especially if they are a young healer like Taijha and might not know what they are doing fully. And there should be some sort of knowledge of anatomy and how the body works... otherwise mending a gut wound with magic, might screw up the liver, or leave a leak in the lower intestine... And you would need some training in micro-surgery for healing a lalafell too! That's my thoughts on it, what are yours?
  14. Hrmm... yes, I suppose that could work.
  15. Server maintenance right now is scheduled around Japan time, which unfortunately is our prime time... just gotta deal with it. NA games often schedule maintenance for the early morning which is later in the day for Europe... so You cant please anyone with server maintenance. Some one's going to get shafted on their play time. Also, I remember way back when I first bought EQ2, got all registered and everything, and then they had some weird bout of maintenance where they had to have the servers down every day for several hours. Which just happened to be right at the only time when I could play.
  16. That is SUCH a cool idea. I wish alchemy was more of an apothecary, so I could play Taijha as one; instead of just being a bookworm, which is what I really wanted her to be. I suppose I could have her mixing up herbs to make medicine and just have her craft health pots, but that just seems so blah... And I have never ever seen anyone in all my years of RP, play being sick. And why would they when they can just get finger-wiggler and heal the instantly... >.< And I don't really think there are any herbs in the game is there, besides Lavender (which really isn't medicinal)?
  17. Crafting, taken to the next level by RPers. lol
  18. If youre talking about the pink-quality gear, that *is* dyeable... Tai wears a pair of pink-quality boots that I dyed mole-brown.
  19. If youre gonna RP any of the crafting classes, I would at the very least, learn what the Eorzean measurement system is, so you're not using inches and feet and so on. You can also BS a lot of stuff, since I doubt the majority of players are gonna know what you're saying anyway. lol Cooking and Weaving are two of the easiest crafts to go on about though... at least I think so. Most everyone has cooked at some point. Weaving is more of making fabrics than it is making clothes, but they are linked. I probly would have called the craft Tailor - even though that is used in every other mmo.
  20. Musketeer and Dancer, make it happen SE! Please.
  21. Well, when SE starts leaking subscribers like a sinking ship, we wont have to worry about server errors and full servers so much. lol "A system error has occured: -2146697211" ...well that's new...
  22. I didn't log off last night because I wanted to see if something happened if I stayed logged in. Well something did. When I woke up and tabbed into the game, the camera was all messed up. It was stuck in the upper left corner, there was no UI, and the only way I could get anything to show up was to change from full-screen windowed to windowed and then back again. But then the windows bar at the bottom was stuck in front of the game... and then the game crashed.
  23. I think this is the reason, despite my impatience and sometimes-annoyance, why I just havent gone full-tilt eff it all and left the game completely... There are so many things I could be doing instead of playing Error 1017, but I enjoy the game a lot when I actually get in... Also, it's only been a week, had this been going on for a month or more, I might have told Yoshi-p where he can stuff his servers and left for something that can actually be played. It's a strange sensation to be sure.
