  1. Family went on vacation, I stayed behind. They got back this morning. They left the family dog with my mom's coworker's boarding kennel. The dog died sometime this morning, and since the vet said 'not long,' I'm guessing a few hours before they went to pick her up. I didn't offer to watch her this time, because of hassles with work schedules, and I'm an hour drive away. Preliminary physical exam he guessed heat exhaustion as the cause. First time using a kennel. She was alone, probably scared, and uncared for when she died. I could really use a hug.
  2. Woo! Queue topped 1000! Can't wait to see the official forums tomorrow, oh man.
  3. I feel really, really bad for new players. Only way to get on Balmung is to transfer, and considering the errors... yeahhh. I got to play for a little bit this morning, but then I broke and took a nap. Woke up to 2002. Think maybe I'm just going to level on another server for the hell of it.
  4. Arslan originated in middle Eurasia, with Iranic, Mongolian, and Turkish variants -- it means 'lion.' There was a lot of word borrowing going on in Eurasia, just as you see happening in Europe and America. So you're good!
  5. 683 in queue....oh, man. I guess I'm lucky there's lots of solstice stuff going on today to provide a good distraction, but man, looks like this upcoming week is going to be a wash in terms of being able to play.
  6. So one of the things that's big in Mongolia is their yearly Naadam festivals (both small local and the national one). Due to the Xaela lore, the big country-wide one wouldn't make sense, but I thought perhaps having smaller localized Naadam festivals between tribes that are not explicitly warring with each other could be a way for xaela of different tribes to have known each other in their backstories or whatnot. Plus, Naadam festivals are just plain cool (it's on my bucket list, along with working in Mongolia :<). Thoughts? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naadam
  7. If you want to construct a name using Middle Mongolian (which was used until the 17th century), this site is fucking fantastic. It gives an etymological breakdown, like so: Proto-Mongolian: *ab- Altaic etymology: Altaic etymology Meaning: to take Russian meaning: брать Written Mongolian: abi-, ab- (L 1,2), abu- Middle Mongolian: abu (HY 39), ab- (SH), oba-, aba- (IM 432), abu- (MA 94, 97) Khalkha: av- Buriat: aba-, ab- Kalmuck: aw- Ordos: ab-, aw- Dongxian: agi- (Тод. Дн. 110), uɣu- (MGCD) (?) Baoan: ab- (Тод. Бн. 132), apǝ- (MGCD) Dagur: aw- (Тод. Даг. 118) Shary-Yoghur: ab- Monguor: awu-, abu- (SM 16) Mogol: afu-, ab-; ZM ɔ̄b- (24-6a, 41-1) Comments: KW 19, MGCD 91. Cf. also abuča 'taking, handful' (KW 20). http://starling.rinet.ru/cgi-bin/response.cgi?root=config&morpho=0&basename=\data\alt\monget&first=1
  8. Sharkbait ooh ha ha! (had to) (sounds fun tho)
  9. The majority of people are saying it's a server thing, and thus squarely Square Enix's fault. ...but, you know, hope and all that. edit - ...and just learned that I am now allergic to nectarines. Tingly/itchy mouth and throat. and it wasn't even a good one! ...sigh, well, that's what I get for trying to eat a healthy snack. Now it's time to consume the burgers.
  10. Still others were talking about ...i'll just quote it So maybe that's it for you?
  11. Did that to me for about... maybe tenish minutes? (was washing dishes and sweeping the kitchen floor), then I happened to glance over and see that I was logged in. Get up and walk away, imo. Lobby error and now I can't connect to the data server again. No good. check my edit
  12. Did that to me for about... maybe tenish minutes? (was washing dishes and sweeping the kitchen floor), then I happened to glance over and see that I was logged in. Get up and walk away, imo. edit - also, a few people on the main forums were claiming that for some people there was a DNS issue that shutting off modem + router and doing and ipconfig flush could fix (additionally, turning off avast/antivirus stuff until you get logged in), that something wasn't getting refreshed properly. I don't know enough to know if that's a possibility, but I figured what the hell and unplugged modem/router and did the flush. After that I could switch servers, whereas before I could not. Coincidence? Maybe. But hey, if all else you're doing is logging back in and getting kicked out, it could keep you entertained for a few minutes.

  14. Work has been so shitty stressful (it constantly amazes me how people who run entire financial wings of organizations manage to fuck up basic communication) the last couple months I'm just happy to be home. ...okay, now to patties.
  15. It did this to me. I switched to the top data server on the list. Instead of backing out, I hung around for a little bit, messed around with creating a character. Then, after several minutes doing that, I backed out and tried switching back to Aether. It let me in. I'm stuck in player queue now, but hey, at least I can derp around in character creator! In the meantime I'm going to try and make some panko friend burger patties. Why? Because I can.
  16. In that case, I am sad. That sort of thing makes me sad. For another example, if authors got discouraged after the first, second, third rejection letters, we'd be missing a lot of really wonderful stories. Too, there are some things other rpers do in their writing or character building that make me twitch -- but I don't let that stop me from rping with them. Give people a chance before you write them off, y'know?
  17. I don't understand this attitude. If I were to be in a rp that takes place in the real world, and want to rp someone of Korean ancestry who is a US citizen, would people still have this idea of "it's getting old how all you people want to play Koreans who aren't actually from Korea and of the Korean culture" ? I mean, you can come up with all these human race stereotypes that I ... don't want to use as examples because I don't want to create race arguments, but just -- whatever floats your boat, but please don't discourage people from creating characters that make them happy. In my experience, playing solely to please other people is going to make you unhappy at the end of the day. No matter what you do, there's going to be someone who doesn't like it, so you might as well just do it.
  18. Uhh...maybe I'm misinterpreting something, but I think you're making more of this than it really is. Someone who was born in Korea but adopted by a typical US-centric family is going to act like .... a US citizen. Sometimes such people don't give a fuck about where they were born and their birth families. Sometimes they do. Sometimes they face racism and cultural misunderstanding. Sometimes they don't. Sometimes they want to build up their ethnic heritage. Sometimes they don't give a flying fuck. You build the character as you would any other character: you look at their childhood and how it affected them, and what challenges they might have faced and how it affects them in the present. As for how people react to them, unless you're building npcs that is strictly dependent on other players. Zhi grew up as the daughter of a second-generation Limsa Lominsa miqo'te, until she became a street kid. She acts like what she is: a product of the street who did not manage to escape the criminal lifestyle. Some traditional moon kitties have been put off by the way she acts.
  19. It was so quiet and empty here, it was weird. fistbump for all those still stuck at work. Stay strong, comrades.
  20. They'd been yammering together, the roe and the barman, and Brindle hadn't been able to hear or see. The crowd was as good as it was bad, and it had him on edge. He was hunched over the bar: shoulders curled protectively inwards, and hands wrapped around his drink. He was staring down on it, straining to hear (the moving mass of people making any attempts to see even more impossible). There was some disappointment when the barman moved away, innocuous, because if anyone had words worth sharing... Brindle could wait awhile, even so. He was good at that. The best. That was why Zhi relied on him. That was why he couldn't let her down.
  21. Zhavi

    New Player.

You've got Gilgamesh, Balmung, and I keep hearing people talking about growing Jenova's rp community. Welcome!
  22. That's... probably what I would've done, too. Slept until like noon or something and then popped on to try and get in. And likely stayed up later last night in the Skype RP I was in (even though most of the other folks bailed around the same time). I'm running on a lot less sleep than usual because of it, too... so I feel you on that one - taking an early lunch helped me a bunch, getting some caffeine and food in me to keep me going. That and the fact that there's a Heavensward waiting for me when I get home. 5 hour energy, bro. also yes, gaming when home. If there are still issues, I will make a glorious, overlarge dinner that will continue to feed me through the weekend so I don't have to cook again.
  23. Ahaha, no. WoD was a total disaster. I think it was a week before I could log in without queues, frequent dc's, horrendous server lag or garrison bugs? In comparison, after two hours or so, everything seems to have stabilised here and I haven't had any issues since I logged in. That said, I do agree with you on the character creation restrictions. I have yet to play any mmo where a launch went without disconnects, errors, crashes, and servers getting taken offline. Which, I dunno, maybe just means I have bad luck or I am bad luck. ;D
  24. We're doing some stuff for the first time ever at my work, which involves clients, of all things (something we've never had before, just donors)... and so naturally we're behind. Taking today off was never an option for me. But I would still gladly be at home, sleeping through the worst of it and waking up to glorious hours spent derping around in character creation and watching people go crazy. Launches, even soft launches, are so much fun. INSTEAD I WILL SIT IN THIS THREAD AND GLOWER WHILE I BATTLE SLEEP DEPRIVATION AND FREAKING @)#*$W)(#U*$@ SERVER ERRORS ON MY WORK SOFTWARE.
