  1. As players, we're just kinda given it as an option. Certain cities and areas around the game do have a patron diety that is worshipped. You may have seen a few already! Ul'dah: Nald'Thal Gridania: Nophica Ishgard: Halone Ala Mhigo: Rhalgr And Limsa Lominsa's is Lymlaen, if I'm not mistaken. I just chose my birthday for Shoshopu's and that sits her in a month associated with Lymlaen- but that's just one month off from Oschon, so I was considering retconning it (from Third Astral to Third Umbral; at least they're both Wind), since Oschon is her patron deity, and the one her family worships the most, as well. Would that mean her entire family's patron deity is Oschon? Or is it determined by, like... some kind of random occurrence that happens that the family might interpret as a blessing from x deity? Just the fact they call it "patron" deity makes me want to think it's not chosen by the person whose patron the deity is, but by the deity itself, someway or another... On the other hand, since she now spends most of her time in Limsa, Lymlaen doesn't seem to be a bad one to be associated with, from a flavor standpoint... Just trying to find as much lore on it as I can before I make a decision.
  2. How are patron deities chosen? Each month is associated with a deity, but at character creation you choose it independently of the character's nameday, so... how is that determined? Is there any lore on this at all?
  3. I was responding in general. It's a really commonly used explanation for Fantasia and I've seen it used in connection with the "Glamour" justification a lot recently, too. People from tribal backgrounds having enough wealth to purchase an extremely luxurious commodity for the purpose of changing their appearance. People should just be aware that it raises more questions than it answers... where did the money come from? Why did the character feel so strongly about changing their race that they expended such a great deal of wealth on it? And so on. Sadly people have a tendency to leave these unanswered and treat the Fantasia issue as something they wish would just go away. Ah, we're basically of the same mind then. I just feel like I'm probably more lax/forgiving than a lot of people in this thread (at least in the first few pages or so). That kind of stuff falls into the "as long as the storytelling/writing around it is good and it's fun for the people involved" thing. Every situation's different, depending on the characters, which/how many characters around them that it's going to effect, etc.... it's something a lot of thought should be put into on a situational basis for sure, and the mileage may vary. But for now I'm going to say it should be possible because I'd rather have more storytelling options than less.
  4. One guy on the localization team told a relative of theirs in a dinner conversation, that the relative then posted on tumblr, that the Fantasia probably wasn't meant to be taken as canon... That's not even devs, plural. Nor was it a definite answer. Other than that I don't know of any instance someone working on the game has spoken on the state of Fantasia in the lore. The significance of the localization team's input into the lore of the game isn't to be underestimated, but don't overstate it either. All that aside, I don't have a big wall of text to contribute to the discussion, but I'll offer my opinion. I'm not wholly against Fantasia-- or much of anything, honestly, as long as it exists in the game in some form somewhere or is a reasonable stretch from something that is. It's definitely not something to be taken lightly, either, that being said. A couple friends of mine have used it in RP, but under the stipulation that the character who sold it to the other already deals in rare potions as it is, and the Fantasia is a very, very expensive and rare item which they've only ever had pass through their hands once or twice in all their years of business. I think that's fair. Neither of them bring it up in conversation, it was a very quiet RP that was mostly kept on the down-low and just within our own circle of friends, and honestly, if that's how you're going to RP something, I'd say almost anything goes as long as it's alright with the people involved. To anyone who argues "if it exists why don't we see it being weaponized/used more often" etc, that's why, I would say. It's very rare, expensive, difficult to make, etc. Just not efficient to use at all except for very specific or special cases (such as, as someone pointed out, transgender characters? which is what my friends had used it for in their RP). Of course, as much as it's mine or anyone else's right to use it in RP, it's the right of others to not use it in their RP if they don't want to. I just tend to be pretty chill about it as long as the storytelling/writing around it is good and it's fun for the people involved.
  5. Shoshopu's also an IC Summoner! She has a Leviathan-egi, so mostly she uses it in my FC's Skype RP, and she doesn't whip it out in public places (except Camp Bronze Lake, once). She doesn't often bring summoning up in public either unless people ask her what she does, and they let her go on for long enough that she gets to that. She always starts with "I'm an arcanist." She certainly can't use any of the new stuff, the post-50 abilities, mostly because those are related and she's got nothin' to do with that. She's essentially still just an arcanist but she uses a Leviathan-egi instead of a Carbuncle, but she's always looking for opportunities to learn more, and figuring out unique uses for her egi that she couldn't use her Carbuncle for. I'm of the same mind as Freelance Wizard in that primal summonings happen more frequently than people might think. That thinking opens up a lot more exciting RP opportunities, IMO. Feel free to send me a PM if you wanna talk shop or ask specific questions about how I RP it! o/
  6. I'm partial to the ... geez, what do you call the first hairstyle? I'll call it the Nat Dormer. That's probably why I like the hair, because that's who it reminds me of. Looks like I'm the minority, though.
  7. The elezen made me go "Awwww!" out loud! He looks so sad! ;; I like the Xaela guy the best, personally.
  8. Don't NPCs use the last half of your name as a surname in dialogue, though? I don't remember any specific examples but I'm almost sure NPCs call you "Miss/Sir <"last name">" once or twice. Granted, that's wrong, and maybe only hyur NPCs do it or something, if one were to make a list of the instances it happens, but I want to think it happens. Would that I remembered anything specific. As for how we handle it in RP, Shoshopu doesn't mind at all just being called "Shopu". She sees it more as being a shortening of her first name than anything, which, I mean, it is, technically. Fyrilsunn gets called "Sir Fiandoensyn" every now and then too and I think he doesn't mind it as much as strangers just shortening his name to "Fyril", for example. I think as far as in speaking and paperwork and stuff it's fine to use Roegadyn (Sea Wolf) last names in the way we'd use surnames, even though it's not technically a family name per se. I should stop posting on Fyrilsunn's behalf since he's got an account to lurk with now

  10. Something about that chest piece seems to cause a lot of argument/discussion!! It's like a curse! When he first got it our FC spent a good fifteen minutes arguing over whether it was blue or green. It was like the tumblr dress all over again. (I say it's blue, like robin's egg blue/Tiffany blue/Maurices blue) MFW: But if anyone wants my input, we got it in the second-to-last chest in the Aery, the one that's kinda off to the side when you're almost to the last boss. I usually see it drop one piece of armor and one weapon, but sometimes it drops two weapons. That same run it dropped again after we beat the last boss, so yeah, the last two chests of the dungeon.
  11. Shoshopu and Fyrilsunn got to 60 and got cute!
  12. I'm three pages late to this party but one of my alts, Awyrbyrt Fyrilsunnsyn, is both illiterate and not that good at combat! He's 16 years old and a little babby White Wolf in the Twin Adders. He's gonna git gud soon but he is definitely the biggest loser right now and he is so much fun to play(and his dad, a naval engineer, is super embarrassed his estranged bastard son grew up not being able to read) I second-- third--?? I share the sentiment on the almost-complete lack of racism. I understand it's for ease of roleplay-- our FC is an adventuring company associated with the Maelstrom and is a very diverse group-- but strangers could stand to be a little more racist, right .... I never thought I'd write that in any context ever. Related to racism, Shoshopu and Fyrilsunn should really turn a lot more heads than they do, even if a good 70% of the time they just appear to be really, really good friends.
  13. Weapons and other trophies to hang on the walls! More doodads to put on walls and shelves. There are a lot of shelves but not many decorative items to put there. And hobby bos!!!
  14. Hey, why didn't I notice this thread before? I have a Twin Adder character! He's just a White Wolf for now, though, no other special rank or anything except "I haven't killed my first human opponent yet". I'd like to RP him a little more, but he's always stuck in the Shroud and the rest of my RP circle is based in La Noscea, so he doesn't get out much. (Maybe he'll be a liaison officer someday? but he's got to git gud first) It's possible they might have seen eachother in passing at Headquarters or around the city, goin' about their business. Send me a message if you'd like for them to bump into eachother! I won't be on much today but I'm usually on afternoons/nights, EST.
  15. I actually might retire my main because her Leviathan-egi was everything and I get sick of having to tell people to pretend the Garuda is supposed to be a Leviathan New egis were literally what I was most excited about in the entire expansion because it's the part of the job I enjoy most The other abilities are cool and welcome and stuff but the butthurt is too strong for me to care at the moment They are talking that instead of making new Egi that you'd be able to glamor your Egis, allows customization. I actually got frustrated and closed the tab, and missed this part, haha. I would absolutely love if they followed through on this. Just looking the part would be enough for me. Blue Mage is really rad, it was my second favorite FFXI job so I feel you there too. I was sad when I learned that and Red Mage were off the table. I only went so hard into Leviathan-egi because I was 90% sure they had said at one point when they raise the level cap they'd add more egis, so I figured I was golden, haha

  17. Oh gosh, definitely. Whenever I make a character in any RPG, single player or not, I end up associating songs with them. My GW2 character had an entire playlist for her-- who I still love and mourn every day, gosh I wish the game itself was better so I could bring myself to play as much as I used to and RP her, I can't even listen to any of the songs I chose for it now without getting really sad about it. So I like to pick out tunes for my FFXIV characters. I listen to a little bit of everything hoping I hit on something that's good for someone, but so far I've only found songs for Shoshopu. A lot of them are from FFXI, ironically enough, and just came into my mind immediately once I started putting her story together. All instrumentals, the best kind of mood music for me, because if a song has lyrics, if they're not 100% correct it's very distracting.
  18. I've been thinking on this a lot lately, the MtG color wheel and my and my FC's characters. I plan on making more and I have more designed, but I only have adequate card-art for these two so far... (To clarify, Fyrilsunn is my boyfriend's character and he also designed the card, I just put it together in image form)
  19. I like both, but almost always my RP is sort of long-term goal oriented. I have a sort of direction of character development in mind even when my characters are sitting around in a bar or spending time with friends, and not actively engaged in some sort of mission. For that reason I voted 'plot', but I would get worn out pretty quickly if all of my RP was always important plot scenes or something. My RP has fun filler episodes that fit into and relate to a continuity and at the very least have some character development. That's how I like to think of it.
  20. Followed! :> I've also reblogged the opening post to my FFXIV blog~
  21. I finally got my adamantoise mount!! heeeeee I'm so excited to use it for RP I also made a gif
  22. Urf ;o; I'm actually working on a playlist for Shoshopu and Fyrilsunn, but I haven't found a perfect song that works for both of them at the same time... more like one speaking to the other. Shoshopu first meets Fyrilsunn at the beginning of her life's adventure 2-nZKkfMj0w Fyrilsunn to Shoshopu after some particular trauma (the lyrics to this one are very on the nose) RzhAS_GnJIc ... and this one is kind of the ship endgame song but it's mostly from Shoshopu's perspective MtyBBoOUgho It doesn't get any more Shoshopu than "as the world comes to an end/I'll be there to hold your hand" Their relationship is kind of asymmetrical and not even remotely sexual (even if she wasn't only knee-high to him) so it's a little difficult finding songs for them, let alone one that works for both of them, because I'm really picky about lyrics...
