  1. This is basically my stance too. I'll try new things when they come out but I likely won't repeat them unless I've got nobody else to RP with or they provide me with something I can use in RP. However, the little time I've had ingame lately has mostly been spent playing Triple Triad with the Indolent Imperial, saving up MGP for the tortoise mount (because that's major important for my character), but before that it was sitting in Binding Coil Turn 2 queues for hours trying to get the Allagan Tunic of Casting. It never ends but I get to RP eventually
  2. urf yeah the OP called it an essay, I was just remembering wrong and trying to go by what I thought Cercil was referring to it as I apparently just have poopy short term memory
  3. Eh, I just called it that because the OP did, but point taken, it's not even technically an article (unless you consider a blog on the same level as a newspaper or magazine, but I'm pretty sure the blogger doesn't so I don't)
  4. Let me help you identify what people are talking about, then, since I'm pretty sure you only skimmed the essay in the OP if that's what you got out of it (because that doesn't make sense at all, at least your suggestion afterwards about naming girls after boys. Are you suggesting that girl names are inherently bad? That the author thinks girl names are inherently bad?) The problem the author of that essay and others have is that to them it seems to them that people are far more critical of female characters, overly so, and are more likely to pin the term Mary Sue to an overpowered female character than they are to an overpowered male one, and that people are also more critical of the author's motives behind creating that female character than they would be of an author's motives behind a male character When the author went on the tangent about the gendered names, their point was that the only time we seem to use a feminine word by default is when we're talking about bad characters. It has the implication that most bad characters are female if you aren't careful. Does that make sense?
  5. I was reading through this thread wondering, "When is Sounsyy gonna show up?" before I opened my mouth. Hooray, massive lore dumps! re: Edda and her methods, since she was a healer I was always under the impression that... white magic could also be used for 'necromancy'. My FC has discussed this idea several times and it's mostly headcanon and I only remember snippets of our conversations so I just have some general ideas to throw out there She could explain it better but another person in our FC is really, really into Amdapor and its lore and finds it interesting that the Lost City Amdapor is called "the dead city", but is actually not dead at all- every surface of the city is covered with mold, fungus, moss, what have you. Even that creepy Goobbbue boss looks like it should be dead, but it's kept animate somehow- presumably by the mold? Possibly a side effect of the big white magic fallout that wiped out Amdapor to begin with? Also, just... the idea of overhealing a corpse to the point of it being reanimated as a lifeless zombie (since its soul is gone) doesn't seem like too far fetched of a concept to me if the conjurer in question knew what they were doing. Since Edda was a conjurer herself (she was her party's healer and had a staff so I'm assuming she wasn't a SCH; only other option would be a THM who would try healing with just Cure I or something??) ... but I have no idea what she was like in the 1.0 quests, maybe she was a THM then if you had to stop her from learning necromancy or whatever, as Liandri mentioned on page one... also re: the zombies in Thanalan, does it annoy anyone else that all the undead enemies are Hyuran? I would have thought Ul'dah and Sil'dih would be mostly Lalafell...? I mean, with some confirmed Hyur living there I suppose (cough, cough), but still mostly Lalafell. Even all the supposedly Belah'dian statues we see don't depict anything like a Lalafell, even though all the names of the rulers and such definitely seem Lalafellin... now I'm off on a tangent sorry
  6. I made this one for some friends... not my characters but it's a description of their relationship (or lack thereof) (she actually has prosthetic legs you see, and he's hopelessly gay) Shoshopu's like... and
  7. I passed by these guys on my way to do my daily mini-cactpot! I dunno why but seeing a family like this makes me really excited
  8. Eh, why the heck not. For Shoshopu... RP outfitting goals: Allagan Tunic of Casting or Dark Divinity Feldr Tidal Wave Grimoire Tortoise mount!!!! PvE goals: Odin clear Shiva ex clear Diamond Grimoire Titan ex clear? just to get it off my quest list unfortunately most of these things are like, drops from raids or trials, so it's like. urgh. but it would make my day to have to pug less people for these things
  9. Shoshopu's definitely had a hand in killing a Garlean or several (I'm trying to remember if she's personally solo'd one or had the killing blow and I'm drawing blanks). She tries not to think about the implications of it, though. I think, in her opinion, the worst thing she's ever done is lie to the Captain of her Free Company. It was a white lie to protect a friend, but a lie nonetheless. edit: Some other things she's done (but doesn't personally consider as bad as lying) are help her older brothers steal food occasionally and gamble, during the first few years after the Calamity when her family had to live on the streets of Ul'dah. The youngest of her four older brothers became a pugilist and would enter fighting competitions and they'd all place bets on him.
  10. Ah, neat! I take it you have partitions set in place to give them both their separate bedrooms? Yep! The layout altogether takes five partitions. (pictures are inside that spoiler tag that's there? that SHOULD be there anyway idk if it's broken now I'm paranoid) The old version of the room took seven, but that's because the room was divided 50/50 perpendicular to the door and I had to use two partitions' width to hide the middle window against the back of the room? That's probably hard to visualize so here's a link to a tumblr post I made about it whenever I'd first bought the room. I loved the 'living room' space in the front, but each of their rooms was pretty cramped... and it didn't feel very private since you could see into both rooms as soon as you walked in (ostensibly there were doors, but you had to use your imagination) This new layout has a hallway that wraps around the front and right side of the whole chamber, and then the remaining 70%ish of the room is divided between the two of them.
  11. I recently redid my room in my FC's house. In-character it's like a small apartment Shoshopu and her Roegadyn friend Fyrilsunn share...
  12. Cats don't have reverse joined legs! They just walk on their toes!! ... sorry In any case, I'm inclined to think that no, they do not. There's no lore precedent for it that I know of, anyway.
  13. Shoshopu and her brothers learned to read from her mother, who is from an Ul'dahn merchant family. Her father is descended from a long line of Dunesfolk who live in the traditional manner as nomads on top of giant animals, so he's completely illiterate. Her four brothers can read a little bit but they weren't as interested in learning. I hope I get to RP as/with her family members someday. That's kind of novel to me, coming from GW2 where the setting is, like... high fantasy, socially progressive, thanks to the Priory's literacy campaign everyone can read, etc
  14. re: cross-race offspring and size differences My personal headcanon thus far is that it works like in the Elder Scrolls or Pokemon, where the offspring are the same species/race as the mother and inherit some minor traits from the father. Roegadyn male + lalafell female is like this game's Wailord + Surskitty, really.
  15. I did a search of the RP Discussion forum just to make sure this hadn't already been talked about... maybe there was some kind of error? I'm surprised it came up with no results. Anyroad... What do we know about the Belah'dians? What race were they? How long ago was their civilization thriving before... it stopped? What happened to them? I just have all of the questions. What lore is there of them? Is there any lore? Beyond what there is in the quests to unlock Qarn and Qarn HM (and I've forgotten whatever you learn from those quests, anyway)
  16. Wow, this thread is still going? Here, let me help: Red herring: something, especially a clue, that is or is intended to be misleading or distracting. I was going to say this isn't applicable, but it actually is: You keep responding to people in a really angry, aggressive tone when nobody is actually addressing you that way. That's pretty misleading if you ain't even trippin, bruh Also misleading is that you keep accusing people of trying to thought police you or silence you or whatever when they're just disagreeing with you and trying to have a discussion with you. If they're putting words in your mouth, you're putting a lot more into theirs, yourself. Non sequitur: a conclusion or statement that does not logically follow from the previous argument or statement. Not applicable. Just because you fail to (or refuse to) understand how an argument is related to your topic doesn't mean it's not. Here's another logical fallacy for your vocabulary. It's one you've been using pretty well! Ad hominem: (of an argument or reaction) directed against a person rather than the position they are maintaining.
  17. Well, nevermind that the thread title is literally "men or dolls", not "men and dolls" or "men who look like dolls"... So what? It's a title. Are you really getting hung up on limited character length? What do you usually associate with dolls that is getting you hung up? I guess Ninja Turtles and GI Joe aren't dolls they are "action figures." Lmfao. It's gonna be okay. No, I'm not getting hung up over character length, but you seem to be getting pretty upset that this thread isn't just full of people who are with you on this one, is all. And trying hard not to look upset. I know it's gonna be okay-- I think you're projecting a little onto that one statement I made and assuming a lot about why I said it. I probably shouldn't be posting in this thread since I don't have an opinion one way or the other in FFXV, I just felt compelled to make an observation. Bruh, I'm not even tripping. I'm trying to understand your train of thought. You are the one pointing out how the title isn't conforming to a perceived standard or norm. You are in fact claiming it is deviant based on your reaction. Obviously you are taking an issue with how I titled the topic. So what is your issue? Well, since you asked, I'll bite, but I feel like it's obvious. The use of "or" makes "men" and "dolls" sound mutually exclusive. Which kinda makes me scratch my head when you point at masculine dolls and go "Look! Men can be dolls!" when I point that out. Alright, this is true, so was the implication intentional? It doesn't seem relevant to the point you're trying to make in the thread here, either. Do you associate plastic people with "emo", "pretty boy" and "bourgeois"? Do most people? I don't, but I'm not most people, so. If you feel like people are taking the wrong meaning from what you're trying to say, perhaps consider how you've worded it.

  20. Ah, why not share, I guess. My FFXIV tumblr. It started out as an IC blog but then the RP ball really got rolling ingame and I spent more time playing the game than writing about playing it. So I just post pictures now whenever I think to.
  21. There's no reason some families couldn't switch over later though, right? Shopu's family history is staying the same but it's interesting to know the adamantoise is not native to Eorzea. Considering the variety of admantoises (bronze tortoises, iron tortoises, giant tortoises... the color variations...) I wonder if they arrived at different times or if the branching occurred after their arrival in Eorzea. Oliphaunts sound like a pretty fun idea! Likely, even.
  22. Shoshopu's own family is the "traditional" type. I've always said they lived on the backs of the adamantoise like the ones you see near Ul'dah. They seem like the only critters that could get remotely big enough for that purpose. Also, their shells are rather tall so I'd imagine you could have baskets or something hanging off either side of the shell, as well as sitting on top of the shell... like a three-room apartment. It's not a thing that's represented ingame, however, and I've never seen any specific mention of what the beasts might actually be. I'd imagine perhaps different families/tribes use different animals to suit their needs.
  23. Back in 1.0 I chose lalafell because my FFXI character was a tarutaru. (that choice was made because I wanted to main summoner, which I did. and which I still do now in FFXIV) When I came back a few months ago I chose lalafell again because I just so happened to have a fresh level 1 character made on Balmung for some reason before I quit a couple months after launch, so I just slightly remade her. Also lalafell are hella frickin' cute
  24. Just got a character in! Balmung's open!
  25. The Arcanist storyline revolves around this, too. I'm not familiar with what's kosher for spoiling and what's not so just to be safe I'll spoiler tag it I guess even though this is like early 2.0 guild quest stuff So... yeah, there's a fairly recent history of it happening, even before the aforementioned ROG storyline which I haven't touched. In Limsa Lominsa, at least, it is very illegal. I think it's safe to assume Roegadyn pirates are probably common offenders in the slave trade. There seems to be a precedent for Miqo'te and Midlanders being targeted.
