  1. The problem with this that I have was that in FFXI this terminology was used a little differently. -aga spells were a set of AoE versions of other spells, but they were all numbered in sequence. For example, Cure, Cure II, Cure III; Curaga I, Curaga II, Curaga III. -ra spells are a little different. Cura is obtained much later than Curaga and seems to just be a tweaked version of it and Fira (and other normally BLM -ra spells) is a Geomancer spell, so it came long after I quit. They're both still AoEs but they break the order of -ra, -ga, -ja, so that's weird. Considering FFXI and FFXIV are both "the MMOs" and FFXIV borrows a lot of its aesthetic and design from FFXI, if anything I'd rather do it this way, but there aren't really perfect analogues for every spell so it wouldn't be neat at all.
  2. I typically follow this route as well, myself. Seeing as I'm "only" iL178, it might be best to get the dungeons outta the way and see if it nets me some pretties before entering the Raid. Ideally, some guide vids will be out there at that point so I can tank things without being completely blind. Used to be fun, learning a thing. Now I'm required to be an expert before even clicking "Accept". Ah well. C'est la community. A friend of Fyrilsunn's a friend of mine! I'm looking forward to running blindly through some new dungeons with friends. :'D I was kind of disappointed by how straightforward the last batch of hardmodes was, to be honest. I'm really looking forward to these.
  3. IM SCREAMING PLEASE LET THERE BE A LEVIATHAN MINION I'm super duper hype for literally everything about this patch, oh my god
  4. !! That looks fantastic! I love the attention to detail! I'm always envious of really clean linework. Please tell me you have more! A deviantart, maybe? Or an art blog?
  5. Ohh my god, my poor internets are chugging just to load the images, let alone all the other flashy stuff. What I'm seeing so far looks really cool, though. I agree it doesn't really suit the game's aesthetic but it sure is fetching.
  6. Oh, for sure. I level a class because I want to RP it. In fact, if the class is wrong for the character, it's absolutely horrible for me to try to play it. For example, my novice arcanist/astrologian Dyrstswys (who really is a noncombatant sort of character anyway)- I was leveling Pugilist on her for a while before HW so she could wear the Fistfigher's Jackcoat as a glamour piece, but it wasn't even remotely in the realm of IC for her to be. And trying to play it was absolute torture. After HW came out and they added the craftable, dye-able versions of those tops, leveling her through arcanist so she could access HW content was much easier. If I play Lancer on anyone but Awyrbyrt, it's about the same story. Whether or not I play the job of the character depends on the character, however. Shoshopu is a summoner. Dyrstswys is an astrologian. But Awyrbyrt is not ICly a dragoon.
  7. Ohh my god, I would love it if the new Diabolos fight was anything like the FFXI one. It was horrible and it took me so many tries to beat it so I could summon him. It's probably my most vivid and ironically fond FFXI memory that I have. I had also changed the CoP boss music to Grace by Apocalyptica and the song transitions matched the transitions of the fight the time we actually won and it was pretty incredible and all I feel like this is kind of off topic, anyway I'm hype for more Diabolos. And just Void Ark overall and any story stuff it might bring. I loved the Crystal Tower dungeons, everything about them, from the boss fights to the fact it was a big ass FFIII reference, so I'm excited what this new trilogy would bring to the table.
  8. I can see what I can do about a border! I was thinking of cleaning up an image from ingame or seeing if there was a way to dig around in the files for images and textures and stuff. Do you have a version of MSE2 that fixes the JPEG issue with art? If not, I can give you the download link and installation instructions for the modified version I've been using. I use MSE2 a lot and the way it would add a bunch of JPEG artifacts to all the art, no matter what file format was, absolutely killed me.
  9. "Total Play Time: 85 days, 15 hours, 34 minutes" I've been playing since last August... August 9 to be exact. So... what, 430-something days? Yikes. I play this game too much.
  10. As for this; pretty sure it's not really been retconned. From my knowledge; just the old Roegadyn tongue for Hellsguard. Well, the thing about that is the Roegadyn word for "Hell" is "Hyll" and "guard" is "waht". "Lohen" and "garde" aren't words in the Roegadyn dictionary that we know of.
  11. Well, I haven't heard Hellsguard called "Lohengarde" since, like... 1.0 promotional material. I think it was just quietly retconned or forgotten or something. It's a question I've been asking ever since I came back last August- why aren't they called Lohengarde anymore? I thought they were Lohengarde? Does nobody call them that anymore? Did my brain make up this memory? Being the Shoshopu to Arkamas's Fyrilsunn I have a pretty vested interest in warriors, but unfortunately my knowledge is mostly about how the Inner Beast works, and not necessarily the historical lore. Way back in yon newbie days I made a thread asking about the IC viability of legitimate Warrior artifact armor, which Sounsyy graced with her presence not once, but twice! It's mostly in regards to, yes, the armor, but it's something to tide us over until she arrives.
  12. I. Basic Info Characters: Shoshopu Shopu, Eaubront Shopont, Awyrbyrt Fyrilsunnsyn Primary character: Shoshopu Shopu Linkshells/Free Companies: Aethereal Warriors, Rusted Sigil, Roll Eorzea Primary RP linkshell/Free Company: Aethereal Warriors II. RP Style Amount of RP (light, medium, heavy): I would say medium? I enjoy RP as much as I enjoy PvE. I spend a lot of time idling, chatting in OOC channels and dungeoning. I don't do a whole lot of public RP in the Quicksand and the like but will occasionally attend events like the Runestone. If I can find an excuse to have my character be somewhere or meet someone, I would do it. If I'm at a public RP venue or event I'm more than likely IC. I appreciate walk-ups but feel free to approach me OOC for RP, too! Views on RP combat and injuries: As long as we discuss everything beforehand! Dismembering I generally will not be okay with but I sure don't mind my characters taking some hard hits, or losing. But I don't really like for results to be /random vs /random; sometimes I like to utilize /random rolls to determine how I'll write something, but I'd rather discuss another way to come up with the outcome than pure chance, should combat happen. Views on IC romance: It's not the focus of my RP, but it's something I definitely enjoy and don't often get to do. If it's viable between characters I like to build up to it naturally. If it's something you're interested in, don't be afraid to ask! I'm not above RPing some shameless mushy shit. Views on non-romantic RP (family ties, etc): When it comes to direct family ties, most of my characters already have set families, at least as far as parents, brothers and sisters, but if you don't mind playing a premade character with a background and appearance already made, I'd be flattered if you wanted to play them. Shopu's parents and a couple brothers that aren't represented by a player character, for example. But definitely ask first so we can discuss it. I'm all about OOC discussion. Views on lore: I like to stick closely to the lore, whenever possible, but I don't mind some lore bends if they're reasonable, flavorful, well thought out and fun to play with. There are a lot of vague spots and outright holes in the lore, so it's totally alright with me to fill those in! If it's something you're worried about... we can discuss it! Views on chat functions (/say, /linkshell, etc): My /say isn't always IC unless I'm in an RP event or other area where a lot of RP is already going down. Using /yell is fine if necessary (like if the character is actually yelling and is also out of /say range). IC linkshells are cool. I write using quotation marks around dialogue whether or not my post is beginning with /em or /say. If quotation marks are present it's almost definitely IC. III. 13. I think that every time, ha. The questline is quite silly, but I find it so bizarre that it's very entertaining. Yes, the quests can be tedious and involve just a lot of foot work, but, that's pretty much most questing in the game anyways, so I don't see the difference! Besides. Gentleman's pose, come on! You don't know how excited it makes me that I'm not alone in thinking this. I always feel like internet trash when something reminds me of GMod videos or YTMNDs or any sort of out-of-date internet phenomenon and nobody knows what I'm talking about. I can't wait for the next quests and what silly-awesome reward we'll get. What Fyrilsunn and I really want is that thinking pose Hildibrand always does...
  14. Shoshopu may be my main, but aside from her I have four Roegadyn alts. I would list what I love about them but I think the truth is I love everything about them. On a less serious note, it's a lot of fun being taller than everyone sometimes when I'm used to being shorter than everyone! And they also appeal to my thing for size differences. and I didn't have a thing for huge guys until my boyfriend started playing one Although I like Sea Wolves significantly more than Hellsguard. All of my roes are Sea Wolves. Having (and still using, to a degree) their own language just makes them feel a lot richer. Coming up with names is something I really enjoy. There's also something to Roegadyn characters that are played really well without sticking to the 'stereotypes', who are fleshed out thoroughly and realistically. This goes for all races of course, but the apparent rarity of serious Roegadyn characters makes this more of a novelty. edit: I also have some more thoughts on why I tend to find every race but the "human" race interesting but I'll have to expound on it later, but I'm going to go ahead and throw that into Roegadyn's favor too. It might be why fewer people play them, on the other side of the coin?
  15. brb losing my shit at the Grindstone drawing Are you gonna be doing the Inktober thing? +_+ (I see you posted something on the 1st and 2nd already but I wasn't sure if that was coincidence or not)
  16. Do talk to the officers before you leave to let them know why, if you'd like, but other than that I don't think you have any other obligations, social or actual. And it's in your right to completely retcon your time there and write something else to go there instead, as well, if you want- doesn't even depend on the severity of whatever reason you had for leaving, it's your character and you don't have to carry around every FC they've been in if you don't want to. Unless the FC is really, really big, or you RP with people who are friends of the FC but not in the FC, chances are their remained inclusion of your character in their story-thus-far, if they choose to do that, won't bleed into or interfere with other RP you find in the future. I speak a little from experience here. I've retconned a character's existence in a guild before from her current and backstory and it ended up not affecting much, if any of my RP afterwards. I retconned for personal reasons related to the circumstances behind my leaving in the first place. What was removed ended up only being a small would-have-been chapter of her story, anyway, as I continued to RP with her with better groups. The one or two people who remembered my character's time with the first group were completely understanding of the retcon and went with her new story. My example of my personal leaving of an RP group is more extreme, so for another example, people leave my FC occasionally if they're just not a good fit, or if they don't have time for the game anymore, or if they have found another group they'd rather RP with, and that's fine and dandy. They say their goodbyes and head on their way and there's no drama. I'm not sure all FCs are as chill but I'd be willing to bet most of them are. It's your character, your time and your money to do what you want with, but good on you for wanting to leave in the least disruptive way possible! Here I suggest the less is more approach. Just be polite as you leave and move on.
  17. People go to Costa del Sol (sometimes), Coerthas Central Highlands, Northern Thanalan, and Churning Mists for FATEs these days. That's what I do, but all of that is around or post 30. That, and scream and cry and ask myself "why" alternately and repeatedly. And daily roulettes. And MSQ where applicable. Hunting logs are good, too.
  18. /applause If the chat box is moving slowly enough for me to write something that long, I love to. Like, if there's just two or three people or so. I'm not the fastest writer so if I set out to do that my post often gets lost in bigger groups. (I don't even RP in the Quicksand, my FC's events can just be that large) My post's example looks like a lumpy crayon doodle next to this! My ingame posts are often much more descriptive, if there's much more to describe, I just couldn't come up with anything off the top of my head without context. Whether I use /say or /em strictly depends on whether or not my emote would start with Shopu's name, or with dialogue, because that's something that matters to me-- word flow and the order in which things are read. /em so they don't have to read "Shoshopu" twice in a row. Other than that I write my posts the same way regardless of whether /em or /say is in the front.
  19. I think using the question mark after sandwich would be acceptable; the punctuation here can imply something about the tone of his voice. At least, I would infer something about the tone of his voice, based on whether there was ? or a , there. Sometimes rules can be ignored a little bit if they get in the way of what you're trying to convey. That's the fun thing about art!
  20. This is actually basically the argument I use with him whenever he's being particularly cantankerous and contrary (I mean that in the most loving way) when I point out a typo he's made. I'm only so particular with the way I emote because I understand that writing style leaves an impression on the RP as a whole. I set a high standard for myself so my biggest struggle actually is not being a complete ass to him behind the screen about it (since he's almost always sitting right behind me, I never point it out ingame unless it's really, REALLY funny) But he is improving. FFXIV is actually his first written-RP format (he's used to tabletop stuff, see) so taking that into consideration I think he's doing pretty good. What I basically wanted to impart though is, that assumption can be a pretty big one. Writing mistakes do leave an impression, but if you would otherwise be interested in the RP were it not for those mistakes, I say give that person a chance to show you how much they care about the other things you care about. (I mean this last part generally, not to you specifically)
  21. This is your opinion and you're free to have it! but this strikes a little nerve with me so I'm going to share my own thought on it; that's a lot to assume about a person before you get to know them. Fyrilsunn's player (who does have an account here but he's not one to post in discussion threads generally, so whatever) is a very smart man with a rich imagination, and puts a lot of effort into storytelling and character development, but he makes little spelling errors like that, and it certainly doesn't mean he doesn't care. He tends to spell things phonetically, on the whole, which leads to things like the wrong their/there/they're, etc. Personally I attribute that to a visual impairment he had during his formative years when most kids are cementing the reading basics they'll carry with them forever or whatever, but that's neither here nor there, I guess. I suppose it's also a matter of what players prioritize. Even though he spelled something wrong, I know what he meant, and there's still a longer post around that misspelled word that tell a lot about what's going on. We're both working towards improving, of course, but to him it's relatively small potatoes to the rest of the RP experience. Just because he doesn't catch all of his spelling mistakes doesn't mean he's not caring about what's going on with the story and his character. It could mean that's all he cares about to the point he doesn't care about the spelling. This got long and personal, but the basic thing I wanted to express here is that there are definitely examples to the contrary of your assumption of people who write in a way that appears lazy- I personally know one. (as an aside, I feel like people interpret post length as being a direct indicator of rage levels- is that just me? 'cause I'm just long-winded and want to ensure I'm understood) I feel like it applies tangentially to the topic, at least... edit: wow had a huge typo towards the beginning there that completely changed the meaning of what I was tryn'a say, hope nobody caught that
  22. Aww, that's a bit limiting! Just because you're doing it in /say doesn't mean you can't put an emote stuff in there too! Basically I always write my in-character posts like I'm writing something. I'll use /em if the way I would like to write my post happens to begin with Shopu's name, for whatever reason- like, if for the flow of the sentence, it would be better for the subject to go before the dialogue, or if she is actually performing an action before she says something... /em bent down and picked up the small box. "Oh, what, you mean this?" (another person emotes in response) /s "It's my collection of shiny rocks!" she said, opening it. They were shiny and beautiful and whatnot. as opposed to, say, /em bent down and picked up the small box. "Oh, what, you mean this?" (another person emotes in response) /em opened it. "It's my collection of shiny rocks!" They were shiny and beautiful and whatnot. For this particular instance I want to convey that she's opening it as she's speaking, so it's just more elegant to do it the emote-in-say way. How would you even do that in /em... "/em opened it and as she opened it she said," It's just the way that's most fun for me. I'm very particular about things like the order things get expressed in, word flow, word choice... so sometimes it takes me a little bit to formulate my response. Length depends on setting, too. And putting *'s around actions just reminds me of my embarrassing forum RP days when I was a tween. I love using emotes (as in, the animations; is that what you meant, Ignacius? oops) and facial expressions a lot too, which on Shopu is unfortunate because she's so small people rarely notice. And I leave the chat messages for those turned off because they, well, mess up my flow.
  23. From youngest to oldest- Awyrbyrt turned 17 last month, Dyrstswys is 19 (she'll be 20 in August), Shoshopu turned 24 in May, Lahzlona is 25 (and I forget her birthday), and just the other day I made Dyrstswys's older sister Merlgeim ingame, and she's 28. ... I accidentally hit the option after the one I meant to because my aim is really bad and I wasn't paying attention, though. I meant to vote 15-19, 20-24 and 25-29 but accidentally voted 15-19, 20-24 and 30-34. orz edit: arkamas voted but didn't feel like posting, but Fyrilsunn is like 37. I think all of his characters except for Shopu's brother Jujuwai are in their 30s, Jujuwai isn't that old yet but he's close.
  24. Oh, phew!! The sausage braid hairstyle that was gonna clip through everything didn't win. For a while it looked like it was going to. I like the winners alright, don't know if or when I'll use them but I won't mind seeing them around, although there were other styles I liked better (like the second female runner up and the first male runner up) Hopefully they'll have contests like this more often and they'll be more transparent about what they're looking for, and we won't have so many situations where the black and white sketch from the front only made it to the voting but the beautifully rendered curls didn't.
