  1. In the Harbingers of Dawn Tournament a few days ago some folks were calling Fyrilsunn a "salt dog", which I really liked. Shopu actually called his miqo'te opponent a furball, too. She might have some Opinions about miqo'te she doesn't readily share until one of them is trying to swing a sword at her favorite salt dog. (I also remember Hammersmith had a number of other great slurs to share but I don't recall them exactly, only that they had me rolling) I feel like Awyrbyrt might have a lot of racially-charged (or exoticising) descriptors for Elezen too, mostly related to antelopes or other lanky forest critters.
  2. In a similar vein, there's also this blog that I follow! They reblog pictures of neat glamours and oufits, which is good for the "ideas for outfits" front. Buuut I don't think there's FFXIV equivalent of, say, GW2-fashion or similar, which is really unfortunate. In my time spent playing GW2 I was really spoiled by these types of sites, there were at least two or three at the time.
  3. Honestly I have the same thoughts, in a nutshell. In fact, I would love for people to treat my Awyrbyrt like an outsider in Gridania in spite of his patriotism, or for Shopu and Fyrilsunn to turn more heads for being such close friends with such different backgrounds. I just don't personally enjoy being the instigator for that kind of RP onto others because I like to err on the side of caution when interacting with others. And I believe that might be part of the reason this sort of RP doesn't happen more, which I find reasonable. If I ever did it would be after discussing it with the other person first to make sure they'd be okay with that. My list of things that should be off-limits for RP is actually extremely small, although I think a lot of things should be discussed OOC first so everyone's within their comfort levels and everyone has fun. Contacting everyone OOCly is a bit inconvenient logistically for public spaces though, which is unfortunate. A lot of things that make people uncomfortable don't bother me, so I try to be extra self-aware because I'd feel bad knowing I've made someone uncomfortable. Honestly the only thing that really rankled me in this thread was the implication that people who are sensitive about certain subjects and don't want to be around them in RP aren't good roleplayers, and that they should go play another game (which was said in this thread, almost exactly in those words). We can agree to disagree about what kind of RP we like without throwing around that kind of talk.
  4. I feel like you didn't actually read my post and just assumed my intentions so I'll just grab the parts I really wanted to be seen: Here is where we disagree on how important racism is to the lore I guess. I was really trying to keep a level tone and didn't want this to escalate; I'm just saying that I really think in an activity that involves other, real people whose personal lives you don't know, one should exercise caution and empathy... I never said I thought people intentionally RP racism to hurt others, but whether you intended to or not doesn't change whether or not it actually bothered someone. edit: I still really think you're misunderstanding the actual issue here or unaware of how much it can bother people. Here is where we differ in how much empathy we have for fellow players and what we consider fun, I guess?
  5. Just some constructive criticism: The take control of target permanent ability needs a nonland clause, or it will be able to snatch lands for 0 mana, as their converted mana cost is 0. Second, her first ability would be phrased more along the lines of "Add this mana to your mana pool," and not need the phrase "instead of the lands owners." Furthermore, if she doesn't untap during every untap step, and all her abilities are tap abilities, then the "Anyone can use these abilities" clause is also pointless, barring the rare effects of enchantments that supply such an ability. TURBONERD ALERT (<3) I've made a couple more since my last post that I totally forgot that I didn't post here. I also updated the Kodaro art and I think it looks really rad tbh I think the Lynn'wo card is kinda weak but I'm not sure what else to do with the character :[ The Geisshund card on the other hand I think is really flavorful and great (and also his outfit is red and black and white but I didn't even realize it until I put the card together, I was just looking for a shirt that didn't clip around the neck in that pose) aaaand I actually have more cards designed but I need to pester their players for good screenshots so I can finish them up T_T This is too much fun
  6. I gotta say, I really don't like that people who say "I don't RP themes of racism because I'm not comfortable with it and feel for the people who have to deal with it IRL" or "I have to deal with this stuff on a daily basis, I don't want to RP it" are met with subtle accusations (or not so subtle, in other communities) of not being able to properly disassociate IC with OOC. Just as much as you have a right to RP that kind of stuff, people have just as much right to not, and wish to avoid it, for whatever reasons that are probably none of your business. It doesn't mean they can't set apart IC and OOC; I'm sure it's not that they feel like peoples' RP characters are marginalizing them, but it could possibly remind them of crap that happens to them and that's just not fun for them? And that's totally fair? Like-- it's not that far of a stretch from "well if racist themes bother you, why don't you realize it's not OOC/go RP somewhere else" to... like... "well if sexual themes bother you..." or something. Obviously there's a point that if you're extremely sensitive perhaps you should find something healthier for you to do with your time, but I don't feel like racism/bigotry/prejudice is something so integral to the FFXIV experience, like, say, magic, or fighting, that if it really bothers you, you should be expected to go play ball somewhere else.
  7. As a lalafell with a eye-to-butt level view, I can assure you it is a little bob tail.
  8. To answer your price question more specifically (since most people focused on the "paying people to give up their own plot" part of your post), on a "Rich" server such as ours, 5 million is the highest a small plot can go, and 4 million is the lowest. The price of a plot actually depends on where it is. A 5th class plot is 4 million, a 4th class plot is 4.25 million, and so on and so forth, until you get to the 1st class plots, which are 5 million. Here's a map color-coded by class of the Goblet. (The Subdivisions use the exact same map, just rotated 90 degrees... clockwise, I think). As you can see, the cheapest small houses would be in the outskirts, while the most expensive ones are near the center. For more information on pricing for different sizes of houses/plots and on different servers, check out this link! edit: ALSO, it is UNCONFIRMED (as of like last week but maybe something has changed and I missed it) but HIGHLY SPECULATED that they're adding more wards in 3.1, since they're adding other housing changes with the patch too, like being able to share your house with housemates. I'm looking to buy a house as well but I'm trying to not get my hopes too high in case they don't add more.
  9. Although the proportions between Lalafell and Tarutaru are rather substantially different (and Roegadyn and Galka to a lesser extent, but aside from the missing tail I think it's more of an art style change than a design change), I think the examples of FFXI children would be a decent model to base them off of... for headcanons and fanart and what have you. galka kids are just too cute asdfghjk Probably, yes. That's my thought. They look slightly younger than the parents if you're reaching (like I was with the hair) but they're probably still adults. It's the parents that look too young, not the children that look too old. They're called daughter/son, so there's nothing indicating they're supposed to be children (unless I'm remembering wrong).
  10. They do kinda have that youthful, feathery Precious Moments hair going on (I don't know if that's just a crappy southern-US thing or not but that's what the hairstyle the son has always reminded me of), perhaps that's what they were going for. Would this be a bad moment to shamelessly insert my character's family tree (in a link so as to have mercy on those with internets as poor as mine)? I'd like to think it's a decent example of how to make a range of ages, particularly older lalafell. The parents might still not look like they're in their late 40's/early 50's but they definitely look older than their children. Like Lilia said, it's in the details, like the eyes (though graying the hair doesn't hurt).
  11. While I totally understand and feel your point I wanna be an arse and point out there is one roegadyn face that is wrinkly as hell- you just can't notice it under most lighting conditions, probably depends on the skin color too (and the character I just linked has a 16 year old son who looks... at least 20... *shakes fist at character creator*) As much as I headcanon additional details in characters that aren't present ingame due to character creation limitations anyway (like Shopu's giant eyebrows), I figure lalafell age could be determined by things like wrinkles about the eyes, white roots in the hair, facial hair, and height... Just things you can't see because the character models ingame are rather limited in small details like that. I don't really like to think that they're this special ageless race that looks childlike forever, they just happen to be short with big heads but show all the same signs of aging as everyone else.
  12. I remember seein' you in the other thread, where the OP was asking about summoner lore :> Hi! Shopu doesn't hide it but she doesn't jump to share it with people, either. Shoshopu tends to hang out in the Limsa Lominsa area (Awyrbyrt is the one that's stuck in the Shroud, Shopu doesn't visit the Twelveswood that often either), though it's much easier to find reasons for Shopu to leave her little region (especially if she's going to Ul'dah/Thanalan). We could always arrange a "chance" meeting with Jana and Shopu and see how it goes! Sure! Actually-- you're in Hugs and Cake, right? I was thinking of poking my head in there, if all goes well we may very well bump into eachother soon! /rubs hands together
  13. Each character you currently have and will make in the future will receive a Fantasia in the mail, and that goes for all future veteran rewards you'll get, and anything else you've ever gotten from things like recruit-a-friend or collector's editions! (All of my characters have/start with three fantasias total ) As for how you use one, you just consume it, like a potion or food, remove all your gear (so race- and gender-specific gear aren't a problem), then log out, and then next time you're at character select you can choose to change that character's appearance before logging in.
  14. Hello! Shopu here... seeking to expand my RP circle a bit, essentially. I'm not new to FFXIV, I've been playing for almost a year (just a couple weeks shy), RPing for most of that, and I'm fairly experienced in RP in general, having RPed in GW2 for a couple years before I moved to FFXIV, and forum/IM RP long before that. In FFXIV most of my RP has been within my Free Company and my circle of friends within it, but as of late I've been wanting to stretch my limbs a little bit and experience what else is out there!
  15. Actually a tough question. For all her interest in Leviathan... I mean, she fights with a Leviathan-egi and has a special grimoire crafted with a souvenir from that fight... she definitely isn't interested in serving him. He and his have done too much harm to her friends for her to even consider it. The others are either way too destructive (Ifrit, Garuda) or too passive (Ramuh). I think she'd be most sympathetic to Titan's cause.
  16. Holy crap really? ... Damn. I.... might just start RPing my characters in a time bubble then and freeze their ages. I just wanted to celebrate birthdays. ;A; Maybe they'll just be turning the same age every year in a Ground Hog's Day fashion. Maybe that NPC just likes rounding to fives. Maybe the sixth year hasn't rolled around to the date yet. Wasn't it someone on the lore team who suggested the NPCs ingame are unreliable sources anyway? Don't let one NPC ruin your fun! I can almost guarantee no one will try to play lore-hound on you for progressing your RP over time as opposed to RPing as if everything was frozen in time, because.... obviously it's not, right?
  17. I joined up right when that "One Year Since Calamity Anniversary event" was going on, and coming right out of GW2 a few months before and the way its living story worked, I just assumed it was confirmation a year had passed since A Realm Reborn started. Both GW2 and FFXIV have calendars that easily translate into our own calendar, so... I celebrate my characters' namedays on the IRL equivalent day, and I basically have time pass in real time. It's never really been an issue since my character has little to do with the MSQ, anyway. This method probably has some discrepancies, sure, but any method would either have discrepancies or be purposefully vague. It's just up to you!
  18. So this is weird, and I don't know where else to ask it, but I've noticed on mine and my friends' character's pages there's a new item in the infobox for "Server" and it's listed as "Unknown". Now when I go to my character's page to edit it, it's not there to edit. I assume it updates based on what category the character's page is in? Since there are Balmung and Gilgamesh categories? How do you change this? edit: I tried throwing [[Category: Balmung]] in there so it'd update the category the page was in but it still didn't work? Still says unknown? How fix pls advise edit 2: I guess you're just manually supposed to add | server = Balmung (or Gilgamesh) to the infobox. Kinda sucks, I'd rather it not be there at all or at least be able to change where in the infobox it is
  19. I should mention that a lot of players treat their IC Fantasia as a significant part of their character's history. You don't find out about it right away but as you get to know them they come out with it, or a friend of theirs casually says something like "that was back when he was a Lalafell" and all of a sudden you have to respond to this. The reason it's immersion breaking is because your character is being asked to accept something that you personally don't think is plausible from a lore perspective. It'd be like if someone tried to pretend that the Calamity never happened, or wanted to tell you that they were the Warrior of Light, or that they are the blood descendent of Bahamut. It's annoying for the same reason that Godmodding is annoying. A person is taking their RP out of the territory of "My character says or does this," and into the territory of "I am telling you that this is how the world works." All of a sudden you can't really RP with each other because you're both playing by different rules. If you tell me that your character can fly by flapping his arms really fast, and my character expresses disbelief, and then you proceed to emote your character flying around the sky with the greatest of ease, then I think I'm justified in finding that obnoxious. My character, however, would find it fascinating and would tell everyone she knew about it. I don't really want to have to do this, so I have to break character and treat it as mundane or uninteresting in order to continue to RP with that person about things other than their magical flying power. Fair points all. I just like being clear on everything 'cause I'm equal parts curious, nosy and semantic. :B To clear up your confusion, I was just asking Tumensuns for more clarification on what his opinion was because it was unclear at first. I didn't think there was anything wrong with that, and I sure didn't mean to come off as trying to make Tumensuns accept that other people do it.
  20. Then I repeat again, since your analogy (which you insisted was more true to actuality than the other one you originally quoted) does indeed assume you've met the character before, and now they're suddenly different: That's not going to be true of every Fantasia'd character you meet, unless you've literally met every Fantasia'd character ever. Some of them you might not even know that's how they got to where they are, so does that really affect you at all? Or do you only care about Fantasia usage when it's affected your personal circle?
  21. I think it'd be more like ordering a hamburger and being given a salad instead, but told it's a hamburger and need to address it as hamburger from now on, or I'm being a meany poopy-face. How's that analogy work? You don't "order" other peoples' characters to be a certain thing, in advance. If you're just seeing them for the first time, why does it matter to you (or your character) what their past is, is the point Lili is trying to make, I think. I believe Lili's analogy is assuming you've never met the character before. Is yours assuming you know the character already? Like they're already in your RP circle and they've changed? Because that's certainly not going to be true of every character yours will meet who's had a fantasia affect their life (if in fact they meet one at all!) I guess I'm arguing semantics now but confusing analogies are a pet peeve of mine in discussions like this :B
  22. Well, to be realistically blunt about it, I'd probably focus on getting any house at all considering, as has previously been stated, last time wards opened up, smalls were gone in minutes. There are about three plots I'm most interested in, and I guess I'd be happy with any of the three, but... there is the one I want above all the others, you know? I plan on me and Fyrilsunn doing drills to practice running there in the least amount of time so we can get to it first Fortunately it's not one right on the beach, I'd imagine those are probably the most popular ones?
  23. Specifically they use gems with geometries inscribed in them to summon carbuncles. In my interpretation it's not really clear what kind of gem, though. All colors of carbuncles have rubies on their heads, and in FFXI (yeah yeah I know) one used a Carbuncle's Ruby to unlock the Sumoner job, so I always call them rubies, but then the carbuncles have names like "Emerald Carbuncle" and "Topaz Carbuncle" so some people play it as, inscribed emeralds summon emerald carbuncles, inscribed topazes summon topaz carbuncles. Me, I just say it depends on the geometry which carbuncle you create but it's (usually) in a special ruby. I love playing with arcanists who summon their carbuncles in different ways, though! What other sort of lore were you looking for? Like... how arcanima actually works? Because there's not very much hard lore on that either. The geometries shape the magic, and the ink used for grimoires is specially made from things like blood and electrum sand so that it conducts aether well. Beyond that it's a bit subjective, headcanon territory.
  24. Ugh now I'm just this writhing ball of anxiety now that I've got enough gil to buy the house I want and am just waiting for them to add more wards. What if I don't get the plot I want T_T Is it going to be so bad that there are like... going to be dozens of people rushing the housing wards soon as the patch is live? I was intending on logging out in the Mist next to the NPC that lets you change wards and staying up to log in as soon as the maintenance was over. Which houses tend to be the first targets? Smalls? The first-class houses, or the cheaper fifth-class ones? (sorry to hijack this question thread with another question, it's just I wasn't around to buy a house last time they added wards so I have no idea what it's actually going to be like)
  25. It was Fyrilsunn's nameday a couple days ago and I totally forgot to post pictures He's three epochs and one cycle old and he is absolutely thrilled, can't you tell He stopped celebrating his nameday in his early 30s until he met Shoshopu and she started enforcing nameday celebrations
