-Public recruitment happens fairly often, usually in the shout channel. You may have better luck with the Linkshell Hall here, just his the button at the top of the page. -Balmung and Gilgamesh are the go to RP servers and typically are crowded at all times. Activety does decline but it is by no means a ghost town. -It's fairly typical to be a single main job. The majority RP that it takes years, decades to master any one thing so the typical job with a handful of hobbies is the go to way to proceed.

The Character Creation post is currently mislabeled. Balmung is closed and has been closed since before 8:00 PT

http://store.steampowered.com/app/359480/ It's marked as DLC for XIV so a lot of people have missed it.

Hi Mitsuko, I really like the unique take you are going with your Mi'qote, especially with taking her out of combat as a support character. Not many players do so, but that sort of supportive role is essential to not only good RP but a good player base. I decided to draw Mits with a confident look to the distance. Regardless of where she came from she's always moving forward.

Heavensward Ilevel Requirements. Strange Design Choice?
Mercer replied to Xavieraux Reinardes's topic in FFXIV Discussion
The flip side is that you didn't need to do the Plaguelands story, Scholo and Strath before moving to Silithus and doing AQ20. That's the issue that XIV has, it's not just the level requirement but the story/dungeon requirements. -
Heavensward Ilevel Requirements. Strange Design Choice?
Mercer replied to Xavieraux Reinardes's topic in FFXIV Discussion
In the grander FF MMO string of things, this is not unusual. It was common in XI to have some sort of gated quest line before you would be able to do expansion content, refereed to as Limit Breaks. These were not soloable quests either, they required grinding and groups to accomplish. Some even required rare items from hunts and raids. They were also required every 5 levels. Yes, gating the content sucks, especially for alt-o-holics, but XIV has never been an alt friendly game. One of it's claims to fame is the ability to do anything in the game with a single character. It also reinforces playing through the full story, another big selling point for the game. I think it'd be foolish to think that the ilvl requirements won't change with the expansion or shortly after. I recall a SE interview saying that the lvl 50 endgame would change come expansion time, but can't find my source. Perhaps it was a fever dream. -
Exactly this. Oswin is bodyguard to a wealthy, bored noble. The prospect of hitting up a new country, with a new socialite scene and mystical lands are to much for either one to ignore.

How to properly react to RP you don't like (or 'Punting the Puppy')
Mercer replied to Seriphyn's topic in RP Discussion
What about the Inner Beast? You know, glowing red eyes and powerful berserk mode? That is extremely distinct from marauder. True, but I don't think being enraged or Frenzied is hard to play out sans warrior tutiledge. The big thing with the Warrior job is getting primal. It's not just about being enraged or frenzied, it's about stripping away mental state until you are just a hair above a foaming, rabid animal. Forcing yourself into that animistic state while keeping just enough sanity to not kill everyone around you. In game mechanic terms, it translates to the constant build up of wrath until you become so infuriated that you can push beyond your normal physical restrictions and preform something amazing. The maneuver also snaps you out of your rage to become clear headed again. -
Very interesting link. Is there a version for males too? I wanted to do the test for Jet'a, but most of questions seem to apply just for females. The test linked above is for characters of all gender & sexual identities. The usage of "xe" and "xir" are basically a stand-ins for, "he, her, it" and "his, her, its". Side note: I dislike that pronoun. It sounds like slang when spoken out loud. Oswin is rocking a 3 so I'm pretty content. Back to the main topic! First of all, read this all the way through. Lots of great info for first time roleplayers: Roleplay Guide If this is your first time roleplaying on an MMO, there's a few common pratfalls to watch out for. The first is what everyone else has already been talking about, disconnecting your accomplishments as the 'main character' and creating a more dedicated version to roleplay as. By dedicated, I mean specialized. A good character shouldn't be the end all be all champion of an MMO, but a flawed individual who's background and skills should give opportunity for others to comment, work with and create conflict with. Out of all the jobs and classes your character has done, which stands out as the one that represents your character the best? Is your character proficient with melee skills? Which one? Does your character prefer magic? How do they specialize? Is your character a crafter? Which craft have they mastered? Generally it's alright to have a handful of hobbies, but true skill only comes around after long periods of training. Rule of thumb is one class to master, or better yet, one class you are in the process of mastering. Character growth is an important, probably the most important, part of RP. Don't jump the gun to master, you're only taking away quality RP. Be careful with naming conventions and origins. At the moment, Au Ra are all foreign until more lore comes out about them. The ones that we know about are all Doman so have feudal Japanese type names. Also be careful about making them extravagantly successful. There's no problem with having a rich character (Especially with the ongoing conflict in Ul'dah), but this should be a flaw as well as a strength. Having wealth makes you a target and a potential victim. It also lets you wield influence and power against the lower classes. If you do wish to keep their business success, be prepared for conflict in one way or another. But my biggest suggestion is to go into RP with an open mind. Your other players are your equals, they are here for the same reason you are. They aren't competition or rivals, even though their characters might be. Talk with them, learn from them and grow with them. At the end of the day despite the conflicts we have over lore, character struggles or rivalries we are a community trying to foster RP growth.

This is one of the few instances I'm glad I've kept my character outside of most of the lore factions. He's Aether numb, a sellsword, a marauder and whoreson. None of the organizations are exactly clamoring for his talents. That said he is undertaking training to be a warrior. If it came out that only the WoL could withstand the beast within I think a good amount of good ol' fashioned bezerker RP is in order. If it comes out that only the WoL could ever take the training, then it all comes down to being trained by a fraud.

This Linkshell smells of Comic Sans and crushed dreams. Graphic Designers should feel right at home.

[citation needed] A dragoon is specific to Ishgard, like how samurai are specific to Japan. Not to say there can't be leaping lancers in other parts of Hydaelyn, they just wouldn't be called dragoon. Let's please not bring this into the thread. I've enjoyed the discussion going on so far and don't want to see an old, divided topic being dragged into it. People interpret the lore in different ways, the game actively allows outside races into the Dragoon class. The horse is dead, let's please move on to the new controversial class.
-
It's referenced in the 35 range that no, Ishgard does not have adventurers or free companies. There is the Holy See, the Temple Knights and everyone else.
-
I disagree. I've personally found that by building within a restricted setting or class a person must find creative ways to push push boundaries. Good RP comes from quality inspiration and consistency, not if they adhere to source material or not.

ART REQUESTS CURRENTLY CLOSED People of the RP-C lend me your ears! Or... eyes. Eyes work. I'm returning to the XIV roleplay scene for the first time in a long time. To help reconnect to the community I am offering a handful of free character art, ranging from pinup to fully armored profiles. There will only be a limited number of posts before I close down the free offer, so I ask that you not only ask for a character, but tell me about them. Tell me their story, what makes them unique. The characters that I find the most intriguing I will make art for, so take your time and bring the best representation of your character you can. I'll do my damnedest to match your enthusiasm. Even when requests/commissions are closed the thread is always open for comments and critique. They only way anyone improves is with communication. Sketch: Color Avatar: Color Body:

Given that we are about a month and a half out from Heavensward I know many of us that want to switch to Dark Knight are getting anxious. There's a lot going on with DRK lore and the class description has already given us a good idea of what direction the job is going. The biggest change with DRK compared to XI is that the class is focused on justice instead of sacrifice. This is a major gear change for people coming from the older MMO but in reality has a stronger basis in the original design from IV, a knight serving the realm. Even then XIV has it's own spin as these Dark Knights are literal outcasts in Ishgardian society, working outside the law to deliver justice. Given how strict Ishgardian culture is for classes, the Dark Knights exist as a wholly unusual concept, one that is likely created out of necessity. The question comes down to how your character is going to become involved with the Dark Knights. Will they be an official Dark Knight? Will you just be wielding a broadsword and stay out of the lore? Will you take it in a different direction completely? Personally, I've kept Oswin based completely on martial skill with an ax. He doesn't have an ounce of supernatural or magical training yet and his parentage is a mystery considering he is a whoreson. I'm anxious to see how ingrained or separated the DRK quests are from normal Ishgardian society to decide if he'll be of Ishgardian descent or not.

How to properly react to RP you don't like (or 'Punting the Puppy')
Mercer replied to Seriphyn's topic in RP Discussion
There's a few ways to deal with such flashy or blatant occurrences. One is to deal and roll with it using the excuse that your character is experiencing a side effect of the Echo or experiencing an Aether induced fever dream. -
I'm up for this, always good to connect with other artists.
