I... might have to take you up on this one.
-
I can feel you on that one. The other concern I think involved in that is being worried about being too... declarative? On what's going on. You don't want to be the sole driving force, saying what is and isn't happening (unless you're in that GM position, but you still don't want to railroad your participants)... and take away any of your partner(s)'s prerogative in the scene.

I'm sort of in the same boat - not knowing what I would really qualify as. I do keep my character and myself separate, but I do also RP as the character - getting into that sort of method acting thing others have mentioned. In doing so, of course, some of my own personal feelings seep in but I do try to keep that to a minimum. I'm only human, though, so there's been times where I've felt upset because of how someone treated my character... but it's usually a passing thing. To further kind of cement that sort of "Actor" style, while I'm perfectly fine doing more... off the cuff improv-style RP (mostly because I do think it interesting and I need the practice), I am also sort of actor-like in that I do also like having a general idea for the scene I'm acting out beforehand. I don't mean like... knowing how everything will go, but having that sort of "base idea" for the scene - why they're there and the basic goal my character might be striving for. Example: RPing going to the market with a student to get supplies for cooking lessons. General idea of where the scene is taking place and a vague idea of the goal. It can derail into something else, or other things could happen during it, but having that base scene to run off is nice. And sometimes having a base framework is also nice if you're delving into topics you or your RP partner(s) might have Opinions on - that way you can discuss limits and things like that ahead of time. That said, I also enjoy just sort of chatting OOCly with my RP partner or others while I RP anyway... either commenting on what's going on or just generally shooting the breeze in-between posts.

From what we know about the Nullstone, Mhach only ever made one Nullstone and it was seen as a last resort. Whatever knowledge was used to create it has likely been lost or destroyed. That said, you can "kill" a voidsent on this physical plane without using the Nullstone. The Nullstone was more of a safeguard to keep voidsent under their summoner's command. If a voidsent went against its summoner's will, the black mage could use the Nullstone to instantly null their contract and obliterate the voidsent completely, no matter how strong it was. Without the Nullstone, it might take several magi to subdue the voidsent depending on its strength. I had wondered about that and does make sense. Think I have an idea that will still work and does still fit with what I do but doesn't require the making of even a Temp Null stone but could entail the use of magic and a focus to produce a similar effect. Basically sending it back and prevent it from ever being able to come back to the realm. A random thought occurred to me for this. If you're trying to destroy it and keep it from ever returning, couldn't you use White Auracite? It works on Ascians, who basically do the same sort of thing. Or is the method in which the Voidsent return to the void different from what Ascians do?

Yes you're right. To me it's more a problem of knowledge and skill more than resources. You first need the knowledge to execute those arts, and this is why they are often locked behind job crystals that only open to their wielders if they have the required level of skill and knowledge to start learning. And continue to unlock new secrets when they are deemed ready. I agree with this sentiment here. Especially considering - if I am recalling correctly - Black Magic is not actually a wholly new school of magic. It's instead a technique to allow you to case Thaumaturgic magic at previously inaccessible levels. Since, rather than utilize your own aether, you can now draw on the far vaster pool that is the planet itself. I wonder if that's why the THM questline was set the way it was, since it details the story of the one Coco brother who doesn't have enough aetheric potential to cast magic on his own. I wonder how much of that mirrors Shatotto - who I believe developed the Black Magic technique to combat her own aetheric shortcomings. The Coco brother risks unleashing a voidsent into the world for his ambitions, Shatotto unleashes a new technique that (along with White Magic) risked draining the planet dry. It's a similar vein but on a much grander scale. But I digress. Since the technique is forbidden for being one of the direct causes of the Flood after the War of the Magi, the two big difficulties in learning Black Magic are (as mentioned): 1.) Obtaining the knowledge on how to perform the technique, and 2.) Not basically aetherically burning yourself to death from serving as a living conduit of planetary-level aether (kind of like a reverse lightning rod, maybe?) The Gem of Shatotto (the Black Mage soulstone) helps overcomes both of these. Providing the knowledge etched into the stone to both teach you the technique and also serves as a sort of "training wheel" system to keep you from burning yourself out practicing it. Which is why all those would-be BLMs in the 50-60 arc effectively off themselves in the pursuit of power. However, there always seems to be some little hidden away treasures of knowledge to be stumbled upon. So I would think it theoretically possible that one could learn Black Magic the "regular" way using those sorts of resources, but it would take far longer and more careful practice - both to avoid discovery and the destruction of your research material and to also avoid offing yourself (either through Black Magic use or being executed for using illegal magicks). It makes me think of the classical DnD Wizard locked away in his tower studying and practicing his spells, honestly.

I'm pretty tempted to hop in on the event for this Friday too, if there's room! Been meaning to get back into some FATE-14 stuff.

I used to remember there being a LS specifically for more youthful characters - Chachan was in it briefly (he is 19, after all). But nothing really came of it, it was usually pretty quiet and there wasn't a lot of attempts to... y'know, plan youngster-based RP or anything like that. So there's definitely a place for it - and a few characters I've seen scattered around that would fall under that category. It's just a matter of gathering them up and either doing stuff with them, or encouraging them to do more RP with other youthful characters.

discussion If you had unlimited gil...
Gegenji replied to voidVirago's topic in Off-Topic Discussion
Fair points, but there's also the time and energy to need to invest into making that gil. I'll admit that I don't really have that drive myself, which is probably why I've never been in the position where I am just... drowning in any sort of in-game currency. I can manage well enough... but on a couple of my lesser used characters, I've definitely gotten low enough on gil that I've had to worry about things as paltry as aetheryte teleportation... But on the flip side, I honestly don't need that much anymore. The biggest thing I wanted was to get Chachan a house and get it all furnished up. I've done that, so I'm sort of just... lazily accumulating gil again with nothing to spend it on. Which is why - if a situation like what was mentioned in this thread occurred - my personal goals are so... limited. Another house for another character and maybe jump-starting an RP idea. Everything else is going towards just helping other folks because I wouldn't need it all at that point. -

Personally? Obtain and furnish a house for Gogon, and create an FC and get a nice big place for it for another character idea I've had but been waffling on executing. After that? Probably throw my gil helping my friends get whatever things then need. Outfits, minions, houses. Spread that unlimited wealth around. As for Chachan? He'd probably keep on keeping on as he is now - he's actually decently wealthy due to his position as the head of a smelting guild, but he doesn't really do much with it beyond buying food and materials for his work... and donating a fair chunk of it to help the Doman and Ala Mhigan refugees. Should he get unlimited funds? He'd probably donate far more and probably see what happiness money can buy for all his friends. -
Not everyone makes use of the RP tag, or uses it in the same ways. That might not be an accurate tool for finding RPers on the server. It's still a fairly recent status icon. I know for myself, I only put it on if actively in-character, not to specify if I'm an RPer. They might do the same. I know they've got a few active listings here on the RPC and I think they have a discord or two as well for coordination, but I'm not in it to verify. I... forget it exists half the time. When I do recall that it's a Thing, I'll still usually only have it on when I'm in a public area like the Quicksand to mark I'm available for walk-up. Doesn't mean I'm not RPing or available for RP when it's not up... it's just something I haven't solidified in my mind as a thing to have "On" at most times, even when in the middle of RP.

I just noticed that you have a little happy Chachan as one of your portrait examples and it made me very happy. And yeah, the Ivalican stuff is pretty amazing-looking. I'm lazily trying to get the tank set of it for Chach as well. I already got the parts I wanted from the SAM outfit. |D (Also I cannot look at that picture without wanting to quote Lion-O. GIVE ME SIGHT BEYOND SIGHT.)

I think this thread is what you're looking for? It has a breakdown of all the FC and Personal Housing locations across multiple servers - including Balmung! And most of them have blurbs describing what they are, IC-wise!

Joke answer: Chachan is a shonen anime protagonist and will take exactly as many bullets as he needs to do the Dramatic Hero Thing. And then likely end up all beat up and bandaged but otherwise fine in the "next day" scene. Minus rampant Senzu Bean use. In all seriousness, one of Chachanji's "strong" points (for good or for ill) is endurance and stubbornness. If the bullet doesn't hit anything vital, then he might whimper and whine about it... but would push on if it was something he felt strongly about. It probably helps that he's a pretty solid smith and tends to put his money where his mouth is by wearing what he makes. So, properly armored up he's even more likely to be able to withstand small arms fire (after all, melding a basic materia to a cobalt chain mail suit in the ARM questline made it strong enough to stop Limsan-level gunfire). Judge is also almost always in full armor and surprisingly resilient besides. The others, though? No particular degree of bulletproofing. Especially Gaines - a strong enough light jab could double him over, let alone something as potentially fatal as a gun shot. At least Gogon might be able to have some aetheric protection or something up.

Show Support for Cart Function at the Mogstation
Gegenji replied to Kage's topic in FFXIV Discussion
I'd definitely like a cart function. Not just for the reason mentioned, but it's also kind of annoying to have to go through the entire process multiple times if you want to get multiple things. If you want to get a set of emotes, you have to go through each and every time and that's... enough of a problem in its own right that it's kept me from making some purchases. -
discussion Do most people hate Thordan XII as a character? If so, why?
Gegenji replied to Marisa's topic in FFXIV Discussion
I think he symbolizes a lot of the missed potential people saw in the Heavensward MSQ. You had all this potential for deep intrigue and politics inherent in a thousand-year long war and the falsehoods it was built upon. But in the end the Warrior of Light strolls on in and not only ends the war, he more or less helps also end the class war in Ishgard itself, and any depth that could be had with the Archbishop devolved into "he's evil and wants to become a god/primal." Really, if I want to be poetic (and fail miserably at it), I'd compare Thordan's whole prospect to the very end of his fight. Beautiful environment and buildup only to really accomplish nothing and leave you watching them kind of pathetically flail around until you finish it and move onto the next thing. -
4.2 Glamour Wardrobe, Relic Armor, etc.
Gegenji replied to Kieron Lohengrin's topic in FFXIV Discussion
See, that was what I was worried about. The "losing the stored item" thing. Because unless that's clearly marked or something... you could end up with someone storing a very rare item (such as, say, a Relic weapon) for glamour and then losing it. I know there's stuff to help circumvent that (Calamity Salvagers will stock holiday event items and such you've had before, and there's replica Relic weapons too)... but it could be quite troubling if you end up accidentally overwriting one of the items or something. So, I could see this helping free up some bag space for your glamour-only items and such, but I feel like our gear pre-set "alternatives" are still going to be pretty dominant. ... At the very least, if you're RPing in a high-level area where mobs could aggro onto you, the ensemble option may help keep you from being out there with, like, 2000 HP. -
4.2 Glamour Wardrobe, Relic Armor, etc.
Gegenji replied to Kieron Lohengrin's topic in FFXIV Discussion
Oh hey, so we're basically getting the Transmog screen from WoW? That's pretty handy. So... the idea is that you can just "save" looks into a glamour list and then can just toss them on whenever? -
Since there's technically no Garlean model to choose from, I think you're basically forced into using alternative options for having a pure-blood Garlean character. So far, I usually see Hyurs being used (for obvious reasons, I suppose), but I myself actually use an Elezen model with the shortest ear option. So, I don't really see any reason why you couldn't use a Roegadyn in the same way. Just have to make them look reasonably Garlean-ish.

In the regular game itself? Not so much. However, in the cooperative storytelling aspect of RP, writing skill can be pretty important. Being able to read and understand what your character is doing is pretty necessary for your RP partner(s) to be able to respond and react to it. That said, if English isn't your first language and/or your grasp on writing isn't all that strong... that doesn't mean you can't RP. You just might need to let others know (such as through your character info block or just letting them know straight up) so that they're aware of that situation. Some people will be willing to work with you and RP with you anyway. Some may not. Knowing which is which through communication will hopefully help you find out which is which right from the get-go.

"Just a wee bit," Stout responded, holding up his thumb and forefinger exaggeratedly close together before bursting into laughter. "Still, what's important is that it's here now. A tavern where people from all over can meet up and swap stories over a drink." He motions grandly towards the tavern room - and to a degree the ship as a whole. The fruit of his endeavors. "My dream has taken flight - kinda poetic, really. But enough blabbing about that." He leans forward on the bar with a grin, the wood creaking a bit under his weight. "What can I get for ya?"

The wait staff, just as excited about the inaugural trip as anyone else, was more than happy to answer Schezar's question. "Well, it's the first time out for the Boar," he explained, raising his voice so that any other customers who might have similar questions could also have their curiosity whetted. "So, the current plan is to do a circle of the great city-states that make up our fine Eorzea! First stop, the glorious greenery of Gridania, then we'll circle north to the snowy spires of Ishgard! After that we'll make our way to the lovely..." He paused for a bit, his impromptu decision to alliterate failing him here. "... the wondrous waters and waves of Limsa Lominsa, before returning back here. We expect it to be a full day affair, but you are all - of course - free to come and go as we reach each stop." He pauses again with a thought. "Of course, that's just for this flight. We may change it up down the road - the Boss seems keen to add Ala Mhigo to the list of destinations at some point. But, we will make sure we let everyone know so that everyone can have a chance to come enjoy themselves here on the Winged Boar." He finishes with a flourished bow and a grin. "For now, though, enjoy the celebratory wine and... should that not be enough to whet your whistle, the Boss himself is manning the bar to make sure everyone's first time with us is a pleasant one."
