1. i'd love that shit personally, bring it on Moderator note: do not say that the mods smell bad or you will be getting a punishment friend! (USER WAS BANNED FOR THIS POST) MOD EDIT: (USER WAS GENUINELY BANNED FOR THIS POST FOR FALSELY ADVERTISING ACTIONS NOT TAKEN BY SITE STAFF)
2. that removes the fun phantom rep that some people have, where you see a rep boost from someone and then the BEEP BEEP ACCESS DENIED screen when you go to see the post. i think phantom rep is an interesting quirk of the rep system and worth keeping for fun's sake. it also sounds technically challenging - can rep actually be disabled on a post-by-post basis? i probably don't know as much about forum shit as mr. wizard, but it might not be do-able.
3. the notion of removing or changing the rep system in an attempt to "change people's tone" (read: control their minds somehow) is both completely useless and utterly insane. it will change nobody's posting style, and only really serves to take something inconsequential away from people so that a vocal, hypersensitive, hysterical, over-entitled minority can feel a little better about themselves. it is levelling the playing field by cutting everyone else down. i, for one, enjoy my stupid green number and would rather it stay. if i got my stupid green number by saying things that aren't to the complainers' tastes, why should that even matter? they didn't give me the +1s, did they? why should the people who enjoyed my posts and added to my stupid green number be deprived of their ability to let me know they laughed at my shitty jokes in simple, numeric form? 8-)

6. THE TOXICITY OF OUR CITY OF OUR CIIIIIIITY 64FrYGRrKVY ive seen the toxic buzzword thrown around a lot, in pretty much every rp community ive ever been in. often directed towards me. what the hell does it actually mean, though? malicious? immoral? rude? contrarian? sarcastic? does toxic just mean what we want it to mean? from my own experience, roleplayists are generally horrid at detecting whether someone is attacking their words or them personally. granted, the two are often intertwined, but this is not always the case. summarizing a post (i.e. cutting past the unnecessary words to get straight to the point) is a useful way to figure out what's actually being said. if it really just says "what you said there was wrong", it's probably not an attack against you, and the person who said it probably doesn't hate you. they just don't think that what you said was correct, and have taken it upon themselves to tell you. i, for one, hate nobody here. even people ive said nasty or snarky things to. everyone on the RPC is fun and worthwhile in their own way. 8-) if you detect hostility in someone, consider the following: maybe they're having a bad day maybe they've misinterpreted what you've said and gotten offended maybe they're joking around maybe they're just fucking with you! the possibility someone genuinely doesn't like you and is out to get you is really, really slim. even among the pettiest internet dwellers, co-ordinating to run people out of a community is too much work for too little reward. even if people really hated people here, it simply wouldn't be practical to waste time with relentless personal attacks. in other words, if someone seems hostile, they're probably that way because they honestly disagree with what you're saying. just as they want to piss you off, you've probably already pissed them off. roleplayists are pretty easy to piss off, and do/say pretty stupid things when they're grumpy. this is where i think the toxicity comes from. angry roleplayists saying angry things. it's not even an attitude, they're just angry for whatever reason. can't really help people being angry about things. in conclusion, i should only post when sober. thankyou for reading my rambling bullshit 8-)
7. people forever seek what they will never have
8. I just play off cross class abilities as the class being able to do something that's just like what another class does, but isn't necessarily tied to that class. Some cases (like death blossom) are tricky to explain, but I figure cross class abilities are basically just one class using its own skills to do what another class does. Let's take BLM (the only class I really play) as an example: Raging Strikes - wizard gets angry, makes bigger boom Quelling Strikes - wizard casts spells in a sneakier fashion/starts crying so enemies feel sorry for them Eye for an Eye - we can ward ourselves, we can ward others! it's like apocatastasis! Virus - spooky evil curse, lore says we can do those Physick - wizard band-aids
9. being able to justify something does not actually mean it is a good idea 8-)
10. the best textfights i've seen/been in have been worked out by rule of "common sense", or targeted towards furthering a story. sometimes even preplanned/choreographed. that being said, not all fights take place in specific events where all participants know/like each other, so for the most part i'm happy to make do with rollfights - even if i think the random element isn't really necessary in a freeform system. "surely", i think to myself, "surely these people can solve disputes about their imaginary guys having imaginary punch-ups" but people cant! i used to think this was because most roleplayers were big babies who looked for things to get personally upset about in their pretendy funtimes, and while i pretty much still think that, i've realized - perhaps wrongly - that that's not necessarily the case. we are dealing with the combination of text, imagination and assumption. if people don't know each other and they're pitting their characters against one another, there are all kinds of crazy shit prone to pop into their (the players) heads! if the characters don't get along, this could lead the players to resent one another, a lack of OOC communication/understanding between the two (or more) players turning into bitter and rather pointless resentment. this resentment, then, pressures the players to compete with one another. in combat rp, this can make people do incredibly stupid things that they themselves hate, justifying such things with "well they might do it to me" or "my character is too POWERFUL to be taken down by this dweeb". if they weren't powergamey godmodey fucks before, this desire to beat the other person and their player can easily make them that way, if only temporarily. if they don't resort to powergaming, they may instead find other ways to one-up their opponent, all motivated by some strange idea that this other person behind the screen hates them and is worth hating back. constant smirking, eyerolling, chuckling and other kinds of condescending emotes could be a sign of this, especially if the character doing it isn't/wasn't written to be such an insufferable, smug, anime prick. in summary, RP is all about interpretation and when you've got people interpreting but not communicating - often the case in combat rp - it can get real ugly. rambling about easily-fixed problems aside, here's my own advice on how to structure/write the combat itself: i believe that realism is needed to some degree, especially in fantasy settings. this might seem a bit weird, but let me explain why: if things get too unreasonable, suspension of disbelief is often lost. in some (read: many) cases, interest is lost as well. because fantasy worlds are already a little hard to believe, ignoring things that should be important or things happening in a way that doesn't make logical/physical sense will break immersion. as previously mentioned in this thread, armour should be important/taken into account and dodging certain things (like a fireball in a tight spot) is just silly. to make a fight interesting, i try to incorporate some kind of symbolism/imagery where i can to provide a definite tone to it. the right kind of description can make the same fight/actions range from goofy to emotional to terrifying. know what you want your fight to make people think and feel, and adjust your writing accordingly. it's not at all hard to do - think of it like movie genres or something. you have different kinds of fights. comedy fights, drama fights, horror fights, all with different approaches to what could be the exact same scenario. i typically play magic-users or other kinds of brainiacs, so i rarely come across the problems of "what can pierce this armour?" and "can that weapon REALLY do that?". this allows me to focus instead on the style of my actions over their substance. im a big fan of stylized combat - sin city, kill bill, dark city and the matrix rate among my favourite movies - so i try to make combat rp resemble those kind of artsy, visceral duels. whether i succeed or not is up to debate, but i do try. that being said, spinning and jumping and flailing around (like in the star wars prequels) for the sake of it doesn't constitute artsy or visceral. if you're dressing up your fights, make sure you know why you're doing it and what you want to creatively achieve with the end result. good luck with the fighting thing, you'll figure it all out at some point 8-)

14. ERP: NEO™ is the direct successor to Excellent Roleplay, a general discussion linkshell designed with the purpose of letting roleplayists talk about what they want to without being shut down by heavy-handed moderation. We have faith that people can handle themselves, and that discussions can be kept civil and laid-back without the participants being forced to ("anti-drama" rules often cause more drama than they prevent). It's okay to disagree, make jokes and mess around. Our name is, in itself, a joke. If you were looking for a place to discuss your imaginary sex escapades, we can direct you to a more appropriate outlet (but we most likely won't). We're not going to sell you claims of a wonderland devoid of criticism, and we're not going to sell you a pretentious notion of maturity. What we offer is a place to speak your mind and say what you want to say, and the opportunity to share that place with other people who enjoy that same freedom. You can be as serious or as silly as you like. Few things are inherently off-limits here. This is your linkshell. So, if you're a 8-)COOL DUDE8-) wanting to chat with other 8-)COOL DUDES8-), come join us!
