it's got nothing to do with the physical difficulties of copulation, or the outward physical difficulties of carrying offspring to term and everything to do with how the egg and sperm interact and what happens to the offspring genetically. Species identification is actually a fair amount more complicated than this, for example with identifying dinosaur species, or bacteria and things that don't reproduce sexually. that being said, the 'produce fertile offspring' rule is still sufficient as a condition, just not necessary.

Why You Should Keep an Open Mind and Not Judge Other Roleplayers in Most Cases
Khoure replied to Sig's topic in RP Discussion
don't get me wrong, it's great that this method works for you, but it does not work for everyone I know this might just be a joke, but you did use the term 'everyone' and I know that a lot of people IRL and on internet believe that pessimism is entirely more mature and smart than being optimistic or even ambivalent. It's one way of looking at things, is all. Personally, if I were to be so pessimistic regarding all new people I meet, it would be extremely draining seeing as I already become very stressed at times interacting socially for the main topic, i agree with what seems to be the consensus: everyone should be allowed to seek out specific types of RP as a tool to filter out more enjoyment, but that shouldn't be turned into a method of judging those who don't fit into those specific types, nor should it be turned into a statement of what rp is better or more proper. After all, there really isn't any correct way to RP, and the grammar-poor hasty quicksand ERP is RP just as much as the months planned out, elaborate, no rules broken, immersion-centric RP is. -

[NSFW] RP Discussion: Bad words said IC, for it or against it?
Khoure replied to Avira's topic in RP Discussion
responding just to the op, I don't see profanity as breaking immersion or anything. Just, on a personal level, I'm not too comfortable with excessively coarse language (by that I mean worse than fuck and shit). So If I'm RPing with someone and the worse words like "cunt" start coming out, I would ask them if they could tone down a bit, but that's just my sensitivity, not a comment on the validity of harsh swears in RP. For me, the only language that I would really want to change due to RP immersion would probably be units of measurement when there's a canon, known alternative, ie miles to malms and so on. -

well, gender swapping would probably get pretty ugly in a place like eorzea. My characters are all cis as far as I've developed them, so having a different gender would make them trans, and I'm not entirely sure how this world treats that kind of thing. You say opposite, so I assume you mean mtf and ftm and not anything outside of the gender binary. Lysiette was always a curious soul, so as a man. he would probably not take into account other people's thoughts on things. He'd probably go by "Lys" instead of thinking of an entirely different name than his birthname. I don't think he would experience much if any dysphoria, and so I doubt he would feel a pressing need for transitioning (assuming there's a magical method of doing so). Unfortunately, it's fairly likely that him being trans as well as being dusk wight would work double against him, probably making him much less likely to be as open with strangers as my cis woman version of the character. But to his benefit, his body was already somewhat androgynous in the face and shoulders if not the breasts. He'd probably be the type who is reckless about many things but hyper vigilant about binder safety due to a scare he had during puberty Synglona was already a bit on the shy side, but as a trans man he would be far more withdrawn so as to avoid harassment. He grew up in a pirate family, and I picture them to be more protective of each other than they are put off by a trans person. So they would be extremely protective of him, especially as he develops into a more female appearing body- spelling destruction to anyone who made comments as to his gender. He would be the type to adopt a different name entirely and probably magically transition as far as he can. However, he would also still like wearing his long hair and more feminine clothing. This would have been a source of shame earlier in life, since he would think that if he liked skirts and blouses then maybe he wasn't a boy after all. But after working through issues to accept himself, he would still only wear feminine clothing alone or with people he trusts. Because, based on sex locked clothing, eorzea is really not cool with men dressing in traditionally highly feminine clothing.

so recently Canada went through federal elections. We went from majority conservative to majority liberal, and Harper, our prime minister for almost ten years has been replaced by Justin Trudeau. My complaint is not about the politics (although personally I support the change) my complaint is the multitude of creepy comments about our new PM being hot. Now don't get me wrong, he is young for a PM (44 I think?) and I do think he's fairly pretty on an aesthetic standpoint. And there is the thing where he did some charity boxing event and professional shirtless pictures were taken and posted online, so I suppose some comments are to be expected. Still, I swear if I see another post describing him with the word "daddy" in it I might cry. (to be clear, describing any attractive older man as "daddy" has always sent a shiver of disgust down my spine and also I'm well aware this isn't nearly as damaging to how he is publicly viewed as it would be were he a woman. But it's still creepy and unexpected and I'm just waiting for some hardcore conservatives to raise a huff about women voting for him based on looks)

Getting into Balmung - Not Happening Indefinitely.
Khoure replied to Kage's topic in FFXIV Discussion
yep, that's why I wandered over here didn't notice the email until the next day a further note, for people interested in getting into Balmung- I went back and checked, the email notification came to my inbox at 11:07 pm pacific time, so people should especially check in at that time tonight. Of course, we're heading into the weekend now which even in the past was always locked. Also, since I was on the topic, I checked the lodestone character creation restriction page (the one that the emails follow, I think) and it says that Balmung is open now. I checked to be sure, and it is not open, but this still means one of 2 things: either it was (still?) open at 1pm pacific when it was last updated, or it was an error of some sort, in which case the email I received at 11pm could have been a mistake as well. Still, thought it was worth reporting haha -
Getting into Balmung - Not Happening Indefinitely.
Khoure replied to Kage's topic in FFXIV Discussion
I haven't been scouting out the windows of opportunity, but last night I got the email update for balmung being open. I'm assuming this means it was actually open for a decent amount of time, because the email only operates by checking once every 4 hours, right? Anyone who's interested might want to start checking around the usual open times again, is all. -

((NOTE: NOT INTENDED TO CREATE A POLITICAL DISCUSSION. JUST A SPECIFIC INSTANCE THAT BOTHERED ME PERSONALLY THAT HAPPENS TO BE TIED INTO SOCIAL ISSUES AT LARGE. )) one time in this forum about mass effect ppl were talking about if you dated the human option in ME1 and someone else in ME2 (the same romance isn't an option because they weren't in the crew in second game), your ME1 romance will bring it up when they join the party in ME3. people were saying how, it's sexist that if you pick male protagonist, you have some option to tell your love interest off because they weren't there for you in ME2 and were actually pretty against you and you shouldn't have had to wait for them like that. But if you pick the female protagonist, you either didn't have that conversation option at all, or it was more limited (i forget cause i never played ME3). Basically, both genders are supposed to be the same character, and yet the man gets to justify his 'cheating' while the woman does not. So we were saying how that was yeah, pretty fair and definitely a little sexist. Then this person comes on spouting about how we were being so mean to the poor writers and how we needed "real" evidence about the writer as an actual person to "convict" him of being sexist, otherwise we were just baselessly pointing fingers and apparently accusing someone of sexism with reasonable but not absolute certainty is far worse than a person actually being so. supposedly, the reason that this piece of writing can't be proven as sexist is because we don't know every detail of how it came to be. One of this person's suggested reasonings was literally "the female voice actor was having a bad day and couldn't record her lines" like yikes this person was reaching far.

new hairstyles are nice, but I kind of wish they'd just remove the sex lock on them already. Double both sex's available styles for (what seems to me like) much less work. Hair styles don't have a gender, dammit >< but I digress, I may be the odd one out for this but I liked quite a few from both boards. Lots of cool and cute stuff.

There's going to be a PSN maintenance on August 31st 6-10 pm PST this isn't a guarantee since it's only ps3/4 users and even then if they stay logged on throughout they won't get booted. However, there may be a chance depending on how large the ps3 and ps4 userbase is. If it's large enough, just the act of not letting people log back in could make a difference. Probably a long shot, but I thought I'd give notice of it anyways. -
The Vent Tent - Poor PuGs and Other Terrible Tales
Khoure replied to Gegenji's topic in FFXIV Discussion
the first time I did a group thing as a tank was that beginner guilhest with the goobooe and a few trash enemies. Since it was an easy guild hest, all was well in the end. But the thing was, I hadn't even learned overpower yet. That's at lvl 12. And all the people started attacking different enemies at once. They must have been new too, because everyone's first instinct was to apparently kite like mad. I didn't have any choice but to chase them. So it was just all of us running in circles like a bunch of idiots. This was literally all I could hear playing in my head. Pop culture has taught me well. [video=youtube] -
I write more than I roleplay, so I do a lot of reading my older works. Where was my wording awkward? Where was it good? Where did I get stuck in purple prose and where did the action play through too quickly? I don't really go back to make changes, nor do I consciously worry about getting better, but I like to think repeated practice and learning to see past mistakes makes a difference. RP is basically collaborative, real time writing so it will surely get better along with my solo writing.

Jana's threatened a Nunh with killing him for his women before. Maybe I ought to make her act on those kinds of impulses. Edit: What just happened to my quote, ok fixed it. well, given that the tribe fizzled out, she doesn't actually have any women lol basically, my character concept includes her having a pretty complicated relationship with her own culture. It's been stated in lore I believe that splinter tribes formed when a tia convinces women to leave with him so he can become a nunh (rather than defeated the nunh of the original tribe) are very rare and don't generally last. Without going into details (though I may open a thread in character workshop later) she came from one such short lasted splinter tribe and was given a very negative perspective on seeker tribes. So the Nunh thing is partly a purposeful lashing out at seeker tribe culture, and partly emotional defense mechanism/self justification. yeah I can understand that. In fact, that's why I thought making this type of character would be interesting. I'm not really good at walkup rp, but I figure someone giving my character crap for claiming something they can't or otherwise aren't would be a good conversation starter. And it would be interesting too to see which players might allow their characters to go along with it (for my miqo'te idea for example, someone form say Ishgard might have no experience with miqo'te tribes and therefore would take her for her word whereas another seeker who is actually part of a tribe might pick a fight over it) for something like the au ra pretending at padjal.. well, I thought it up on the spot to give examples, but I suspect she would get run out of gridania quite quickly, and laughed out of most other places. Which could be interesting on its own, the idea of a down-on-her-luck conwoman who just can't make a believable ploy ("okay okay, I'm not a padjal. But I AM a messenger sent by the twelve themselves to gift Eorzeans with these protective charms of legend, for but a small f-" "NO.") The gist of things though, is that as long as I OOC make it abundantly clear I'm not actually playing whatever lore breaking thing my character claims, and as long as I keep IC confrontations IC, I should be okay from most OOC complaints?
-
I'm talking about characters that go around saying they are something that they aren't, really. Like, maybe you have a con-woman au ra who has the skinny, back pointing horns who hides her tail and goes around calling herself a padjal (the elementals demand you buy this snake oil!) . Or some thamauturge who mistakenly thinks they are a black mage after picking up a funny looking rock that is clearly a soul stone, guys. Personally, I'm thinking of a female seeker miqo'te who is an adventurer but claims the nunh title for a splinter tribe that no longer actually exists. Basically, what's the chances of this being shunned OOCly? I assume it would lead to interesting IC confrontations where some characters may fall for it but others don't and find it offensive/distasteful. But will people spam you with ooc grief for the sort-of lore breaking? It's not really breaking lore since you're role playing someone who is lying, twisting logic, or outright mistaken, but on the surface it probably looks like you are. Thoughts?

Inspired by "what are you listening to?" thread. What tv shows have you recently come back to, are approaching as a new viewer, or are just keeping up with? Have you been trending towards certain genres lately? Or are you watching different things left and right in no particular order? Feel free to post video clips of favourite, or just plain good moments, spoiler tagging if you think it's needed. goes without saying, but this is a judgement free zone, no making fun of people for watching "dumb" shows. Also, anime included because it's also aired on tv generally speaking. I'm keeping up with Steven Universe and Gravity falls, and I've been watching a bit of Corner Gas since someone put the entire show up on youtube. Since it's probably the least recognizable of the three I've mentioned, I submit here two short clips. [video=youtube] [video=youtube] (seriously this show is pretty great)

that's why I liked the cr1tikal play of fnaf. He's just so unimpressed with jump scares it saps any scariness right out. Plus, he tells great stories.

Compiled stuff is pretty good too, if you're interested in the commentary and the more memorable parts of a game. Personally, though, I find it's about the game just as much as the person playing it, if not more so. So I'm watching it in part for the LPer's comments and insight and reactions, and in part to experience the game. Which I suppose might be why I dislike it when it's more about the LPer than the game, or when they're too focused on their own antics to pay attention to the game. I mean seriously, Game Grumps is notorious for this (especially in the older ones). They get mad and yell at a game for not telling them where to go when they missed blatant clues and NPCs giving them what they need because they were too focused on their jokes. They can be funny at times, mind you, but I find some of their best stuff is when they're either playing a game them know like the back of their hand (Mario Bros 2 comes to mind) or one that's so simplistic and linear that they can focus on their antics without hindering gameplay (ex. Kirby's Epic Yarn). I know I probably shouldn't complain. I've only done one LP and it was a doofy little screenshot dealie. And enough people seem to enjoy their work to make all these Game Grumps Animateds. I just... I dunno. Their approach rubs me the wrong way, so I don't really watch them anymore. Well, I can't comment on Game Grumps at all, like I mentioned I only ever watch a few LPs (cr1tikal, tbfp, vinesauce). I mean, I've seen one or two of their videos, like the infamous sonic 06 "line in the sand" speech which I did think was pretty hysterical. But yeah, I can't really address your grievances there. We just have different things we are looking to get out of these videos, and that's perfectly fine. I'm looking for something funny, something that will make me laugh. Automatically that means I am drawn to the banter, to clever and well delivered lines, to moments in the game that facilitate this- which is why length is a turn off, you can't expect anyone to keep up consistent hilarity while staying on point for an entire game's play through. You are instead looking to experience the game, this means you might be more likely to be put off by excessive banter or things that take attention from the play instead of adding to it- you probably want something more immersive. In either case, the LP community is so large by now that we both get plenty of what we want.

The Vent Tent - Poor PuGs and Other Terrible Tales

When you don't want to go after those optional adds but one dps is so insistent that they actually pull the mob so you have to rescue their ass. When it comes to optional mobs, I always assume the tank gets priority decision on whether or not to take them, unless they are majority outvoted on something. Alternatively, when someone who is not the tank decides it would be a fantastic idea to pull the boss. I'm looking at you, Toto-rak. Don't know why, but that dungeon specifically seems the worst for me when it comes to bad party members. -
here is a video my brother took of me trying to shovel snow when the dogs are out. Harley is the golden retriever, Tasha is the german shepherd. We adopted them both at different times. So yeah, we haven't been able to get Harley to lose the weight he had when we got him, and Tasha spent years of her life locked in a smallish enclosure and we're pretty sure she initially went through beginner level training for police dogs or something because she is really intelligent but also super wired. I love her, but she has so many problems orz [video=youtube]

Bands you think you only listen to
Khoure replied to ChewableMorphine's topic in Off-Topic Discussion
I'm the opposite of underground, since I really only hear of very popular music (the only time I get new music is if a: related video on youtube, b: someone links it to me, c: someone I follow reblogs it on tumblr) And so this band is really not unknown at all. It's just... unknown to all the circles of people I tend to interact with. Most likely because it's a christian band, so the only people I know who know about it are from church. But it's really not bad at all for christian music, and it was one of the few things i could listen to back in the day when my parents were much more strict with out media consumption. don't worry, I'm making sure to post songs that aren't too church-y. The band is Relient K one of my favourite of their newer songs. It does make me a bit nervous about my own mortality though lmao Collapsible Lung [video=youtube] one of my favourite of their older songs, probably one of their better known tracks as well. I'll keep an eye out for you! I'm still concentrating more on lvling than rp, and I'm more into light-medium than medium-heavy, but it's always nice to have more friends and potential connections.
