Will two hands replace one hand, and dark knights replace paladins?
mongi291 replied to Seriphyn's topic in RP Discussion
Falls in line with the relative view of what entails godmoding. I'd advise against playing with folks who insist that two defenses are playing unfair, though. Keep in mind I'm coming from the mentality of someone who thinks posting damage sustained in a believable way is the whole fun of combat RP. There were two blocks because I didn't want to make an unnecessarily long post. The point isn't the fact that he blocked 2 times, it's the fact he blocked 2 times out of 2. Anyway, my point is... I'd prefer to avoid penalizing people to lose just because they use the weapon they like the most, even if in reality it's inferior. -
Au Ra, Xaela tribal alliance and enemies?

I also remembered that, although we've got lore on Xaelas, we still don't know the naming conventions. Damnit. -

The "block everything and kill anything that bleeds" thing was just an 8-bit Theather quote... But nevermind. What I meant was, if I'm doing RP combat as a greatsword user, against someone using sword and shield, and they start godmoding with the excuse of being faster or whatsoever, I'd be pissed off. As it's always the case with godmoding. -

I'm not sure if I'll make a Xaela character. But if I will, I'm looking forward to join a tribe FC. I hope making some sort of Dark Knight equivalent to Free Paladins will be possible ICly, because I was planning a Xaela that learned the arts of Dark Knight and then went back to its tribe. -

You make greatswords look like shit. While I'm not really a greatsword fan (rapiers ftw), they aren't even that heavy and clumsy, there are bigger and heavier weapons that we can still use effectively (you could even wield with only one hand some of them, if you are strong enough). Also if I see someone using sword and shield beating someone with a greatsword without problems just because they can "block everything and kill anything that bleeds", I'd never RP with the sword and board user. -
Well, I never met an half breed before but Ophelie is pregnant with a Duskwight/Keeper of the Moon hybrid. Nobody really said anything against it, tho.

Eh, it would be cool if GLA/PLD gained a trait that increased the stats (excluding Weapon Damage) on their swords by 50% (making them equal to Sword+Shield) if no shield is equipped. -
Told you I can't speak for Coil and harder contents, so yeah, I'm casual.

Why, weren't they tank and spank? I can understand the whole "omg new mechanics too much of them wtf" as a healer or DPS, but for tanks (main tanks at least), from the first dungeon to the last ones (except maybe Coils, still stuck at T5 :c) it's just "Build enmity, dodge AoEs, face it away from the party, stay alive". Sure, there are mechanics from time to time, but most of the times the tank doesn't have to worry about them, and when they do, they are easy to understand and execute. The biggest problems for tanks come in several example flavors: 1) "Wait, I gotta MOVE this target somewhere? OMG where... we wiped, why?" 2) "This bastard's almost dead... hey, no fair, why do I gotta run just because he wants to be invulnerable and nuke the whole playfield now?" 3) "My rotation is perfect - why is this Ninja still stealing my aggro?" 3) "My rotation is perfect - why is this other tank stealing my aggro?" 4) "The boss just ignores aggro in this phase - what do you want me to do?" 5) "Hold boss, crap, grab the adds... dangit, I use provoke, game, what do you want, that I get a proton pack from Ghostbusters before you'll let me hold hate?" 6) I'm facing this boss towards me... his AOE is coming out his BUTT? WTF?" 7) Why does the enemy's big interruptible always pop when my stun is inaccessible from cooldown?" Edit: Tankin' Ain' Easy. Premise: I'm still stuck on T5, so I don't know if those problems come from Coils. 1) Not really an issue, if you are in a good party and you're new they'll put markers or at least explain it to you. 2) I'm sincerely curious: where does this happen? I can't remember any boss that does this. Then again I've been not playing for a while. 3) This can be an issue, but it requires you to be severely undergeared for it to happen. Heck I'm a 106 PLD/104 WAR and I have no problems holding aggro against overgeared party members. Unless they're 130 WAR going Defiance/Unchained/Berserk/Internal Release. 4) Use Sword Oath/Drop Defiance, possibly use STR accessories if the boss acts like this from the start. 5) In full parties it's the OT's job. In light parties it's either a single add or the DPS can handle it. 6) You're already protecting the party from cleaves, if they can't avoid shit it's not your fault. 7) Every class/job with a Stun except Paladin uses them as offensive moves, so by the time you need to stun something the boss is already immune to it. And sometimes it's even immune from the start. EDIT: Sorry, I quoted instead of editing.

Heavensward Jobs, and Au Ra Lore now available
mongi291 replied to Avalt Laguz's topic in FFXIV Discussion
I get the feeling there will be Au Ras in Ishgard or at least in Coerthas. It would be silly to have a new race but have almost no NPCs of that race. I don't know, maybe they escaped from Othard when it was conquered and went directly to Ishgard/Coerthas instead of the rest of Eorzea. -

I don't know where you read they pick on poor people. In fact they protect them from corrupted knights and priests. -

They already gave the bat PvP gear to Ninja, tho... Petition to change this, anyone? SE can't make all those reference and then leave us without a bat costume :c -

mongi291 replied to Avalt Laguz's topic in FFXIV Discussion
I can already see the plot of their quests as a mix between the Rogues' quests, with Ishgardian clergy and knights instead of pirates, and Warriors' quests, with darkness instead of the inner beast. -

So using Batman to announce Dark Knight wasn't just a one-time reference... And to be honest I like this chivalrous take on Dark Knights. Dark Knights aren't just emo edgelords: they are knights. -
Reasoning for irregular race/nationality combinations
mongi291 replied to Seriphyn's topic in RP Discussion
Being a certain class wielding a certain type of weapon is easy because, unlike jobs, there are multiple places where you could have learned. I mean, if you are using powerful Sultansworn abilities, you are a Paladin and you must have some sort of connection to Ul'dah and the Sultansworn. If you're using the power of your inner beast, you are a Warrior and you must have least met another Warrior who taught you those techniques. But there aren't restrictions for classes. There are fighters of every kind using weapons of every kind coming from places of every kind. We're talking about Dragoon and Lancers, so let's use Lancers as an example. The Lancers' Guild is in Gridania, sure. But we have not only Gridanian Lancers, but Ishgardian Dragoons, Ala Mhigan Lancers, Garlean Lancers (called Eques), and even beastmen Lancers: we see Ixali, Amalj'aa, Kobold and Sahagin Lancers. Maybe even Sylphs too, but I'm not too sure about them. -
I was planning to make an Au Ra character that came in Eorzea way before the Calamity and went to Ul'dah, later becoming a Sultansworn and a Paladin and then quit for various reasons... But I don't know if the Auri lore would allow it. So we'll see. But even if he isn't a Paladin and he came to Eorzea only recently, it'll be an Au Ra.

How has Ishgard been feeding itself?!
mongi291 replied to QueenFrejyalen's topic in FFXIV Discussion
It wasn't? Damn. That means Ophelie's story is flawed. If there wasn't snow she could have easily went back to home and she would have never been abducted by the Ixali and Garuda. I guess it's RETCON TIME! -

*a Dragoon kills a dragon with Jump* Grilled dragon skewers for everyone! -
Chances are you you will need at least one tank class leveled a bit to unlock drk and a healer for ast. And tanking at 30 is hardly a challenge so shouldnt be that hard to pick up. It isn't hard, IF you know how to do it. I've leveled both PLD and WAR so I know how to tank. But if you don't know how... Well let's just say you won't be able to do any dungeon past Brayflox.

Final Fantasy XIV Heavensward Opening Movie [SPOILERS FOR 2.55]

Hm. That Dark Knight... If it is lore-friendly, I'm sure as hell creating an IC DRK character. -
