Hey, everyone! I play a brash Miqo'te warrior who acts first and thinks second and I'm particularly interested in a fight. I've written an intentionally vague wiki page for my character to hype him up--the character concept is simple by design, and very flexible. Kerrath needs very little context to get into a fight--they are what he lives for, after all. Kerrath, for better or for worse, fears nothing, and cannot conceive of the limitations of his own mortality. He is the epitome of 'hold my beer' and this mindset gets him into trouble regularly. Foregoing skill and technique for strength and endurance, Kerrath has only survived thus far by a combination of luck and gumption. In fights, I (the player) have no preference between roll systems and free-form--I prefer to take hits even if I "block" them by rolls, and dedicate a significant amount of my posts to describing all the blood and such spewing forth when hit. If I lose the fight, better to do so in a bloodbath, and if I win, it's more exciting if it's close. OOC info: Contact me in game as Kerrath Redblade or on discord at Kerrath#6596. I can be contacted most any time by discord, but prefer to RP in game. I'm usually around after 3pm PST on weekdays, or all day on weekends. Not looking for romance RP, unless your idea of romance is more about the intimate nature of stabbing and punching your friends repeatedly in good humor.

Judge yourself by your intentions: If you are acting in good faith, and you know that you are, the outcomes of your actions are secondary. The RP community is always looking for creative individuals with a lot of imagination. If you have that to offer, anyone worth associating with would be glad to have you. Don't pursue approval of your peers--it's one thing to use the reactions of others to keep yourself grounded in reality, but something else entirely to either freeze up for fear of reprisal, or worse, compromise on your creative vision. In other words, you have nothing to be afraid of, and anyone who rejects you in spite of creative energy and good intentions isn't worth associating with anyways. Also, the bulk of RPers know no more about their craft than you, the standards are very low. You just gotta have a lust for adventure & a creative vision for a character that is fun to interact with, and even if you're short on that, you're probably fine anyways.

I haven't experienced much of this. By contrast I hear a lot of women roleplayers discontent with the lack of people whose characters are heterosexual males. I'm gonna quote some useful takes I've seen in this thread: ^^This one is good advice in general. ^^When you include your character's sexual orientation you implicate to the person you're roleplaying with that you might possibly have an objective of sexual content. Which can put them on edge. That's not to say that there's anything wrong with sexual content, but when it's treated as an objective, you get an implicit sense of, idk, pressure in place that makes people uncomfortable. If you do perceive a difference between rping a female vs male wherein you perceive female characters getting more attention, also keep in mind that you may not actually want every kind of attention.

dice rolls will decide if you win or lose, but not how you win or lose--and rp is all about your ability to improvise. there's also no real effective way to 'prove' it.

edit: nvm, really off-topic. my post was in regards to roll systems, which is off topic.

if anything, it'll be easier to get rp with a character with common features. make something you like. the only advice i have is that if this is your first time and you don't have pre-existing contacts it might be a smart idea to make a character that is not only simple, but accessible, and being an extroverted character helps a little bit.

well i don't get SUPER wary but for me it goes back to inventing shit. ive seen people use garlemald as a magic box from which to pull all sorts of bullshit where they say their character comes from garlemald and is an invincible warrior goddess with immortality who has an aura that instantly nullifies all magic cast in their general vicinity and she was genetically modified to be the perfect warrior and simultaneously modified to be extremely sexy with big hips and breasts. i have no time for downloading all of that dlc into my rp tbh if you dont do any of that nonsense thats really all it takes for me to be fine with your garlean. hell, id love nothing more than to play an extremely fascist garlean nationalist with flowing beautiful hair, a cape, and a general tendency to naturally stand in contrapposto at all times.

IC red flags: For the most part, I'll RP with anyone so long as their stuff is reasonably lore-adjacent. it doesn't have to be exact, but it has to be believable. I don't really care that much if someone RPs that they have one of the Jobs even if it's one of the more exclusive Jobs so long as they reasonably adhere to the lore of the job, and even that has wiggle room for me. Really, what I mean is that if you had to invent stuff for your character to work, I get wary. If your character came from a nation no one's ever heard of, I get wary. If your character is some sort of race that no one's ever heard of, I get wary. If you made up a brand new job that doesn't exist in the Final Fantasy universe, I get wary--unless it's pretty tame and understandable, I guess. If you play as a Garlean, I get wary. I've seen it done well, but for every good Garlean, there's someone who's using Garlemald as a plot device to invent whatever anime contraption they want and import it into the FF14 universe--which can be troublesome. If you play a Futa Nunh, I'm judging you and you need to go to church. OOC red flags: People who've got a lot of enemies. If you think everyone hates you, well, everyone is a lot of people and I'm fairly certain not everyone is actually an asshole, but the common denominator is you. People who don't talk out their problems with their friends and other associates. I've seen this one A LOT. I've seen a lot of people who've got such an intrinsic built-in fear of confrontation that it hinders their ability to move past whatever they're dealing with. Yes, confrontation sucks, but it's a necessary element for managing conflict. People who are too open about their sexuality. This is a personal taste one, and I get that not everyone shares my feelings here--but if I see an f-list in your search comment, I make the presumption that you're probably mostly in it for ERP. Also, I generally prefer not to know much about people's sexuality. It's none of my business, and I prefer it that way. People who ic/ooc bleed. I don't care as much about this one because I don't engage in THAT much romance RP, which is where bleed might be a problem. I play with my girlfriend. Before she played, I was lucky enough that my romance RP partners were fairly chill. I don't really play a very antagonistic character, so I also don't often experience people who've got issues with feeling antagonized.

i think the reason so many people do it is because it's a simple way to open a lot of doors. business rp easily generates public events, but at the same time you want to go on adventures, so the criminal enterprise option is appealing to, and very coherent in conjunction with a business front.

for me my character's romance was pre-arranged because my girlfriend plays ff14. it's about that simple. in any other case, though, i think organically-generated romance plots are better. in fact, i think that the less you care about your character's sexual success, the better of a romance roleplayer you have the capacity to be. the best romance roleplayers are the ones who actively find new and creative wrenches to throw in the machine. i really enjoy rocky romance stories wherein one or both characters have severe personality flaws. a large part of storytelling is the investigation of the human condition and romance is an excellent vehicle for exploring the nature of a person.

This is (sort of) my experience too? I played on Mal'Ganis in WoW. If I were to hear that Mal'Ganis was 97% male 3% female, I would believe it. In fact, I'd think they were overestimating how many women played on that server. TBH though, I only really had one horror story about someone harassing a female player on that server. We had this hunter who harassed our female ret paladin to the point that we chose to kick him over it. TBH there were other confounding issues that led to the kick, but the bottom line is that he was also harassing her. The rest of us treated her the same as any other raid member: we only really cared about her dps and we would make fun of her for messing up just like we would only really care about anyone else's dps and make fun of them for messing up. the ret pally was good. she farmed content all day, didn't start any shit, helped everyone out--stellar team player. the only other female player we ever had lasted maybe a week. she was a low performer. when we confronted her on it, she attempted to use her female status to curry favor with us. kicked her. we had no other female players in our guild. playing on balmung blew my mind how many female players there were. i didn't really see so many female players that male ones are a scarce resource to be fought over. idk. i mean i know a lot of people who meet online, and i think that's great--met my girlfriend on a forum--but i don't think online is an ideal place to actively seek out a romantic partner.

What I also find interesting here is, if you play a male miqo'te with the last name "Nunh", the harrassment seems to be able to rival what female ooc/ic players can experience in the shape of nasty tells. My general opinion is that Balmung used to be way worse than it is, presently - You can go into the Quicksand on a female character without getting a single creepy tell, these days. As for OOC aggression from men, I've seen the people who have strong opinions about it but haven't has the (dis)pleasure of interacting with them more than once. As I see it, they are a minority - that can just be a bit vocal. It's nothing I'd compare to ending up with a stalker-type that is out to manipulate you ooc for various reasons, including the standard guy-wants-gamer-girl. So I think if girls want to play guys to get away from that kind of harassment it's still a fairly effective shield. What the heck, are you serious? Lmao, WHY? Do people get weirdly defensive of others writing as a literal 'alpha' male type of character? That is such a strange thing - being more defensive of Nunh as opposed to Tia. They're all dude characters in the end. i think it's primarily a combination of power dynamics in the rp community and the presumption that someone who would choose to play a nunh would do so with the express intent of pursuing ERP. re: the power dynamics, a nunh is a character with some degree of power in the lore & characters that are powerful are held to higher standards than characters that aren't powerful. e.g. if your character is super powerful but you aren't a top notch grade A roleplayer people will hate you, but they'll forgive a non-powerful character played by a lower quality RPer.

I looked at your wiki and saw your character is interested in books. My character runs a quiet bookstore with too many books and some great reading spots. If you're interested, my name in game is Kerrath Ellouelle--send me a whisper.

more thoughts in each for me: -character sheets are homework. i could see them being worth the time for an extended campaign, but at that rate you may as well play a dedicated pen and paper rpg. -freeform is good if you trust the other person and have a general idea for how you want this to go down. if there's no plan for the fight's outcome, though, i'm not a fan. -straight rolls, to me, are only a problem when there's a clear disparity in fighting prowess between the two characters. the upside is that randomness can add an element of spontaneity/unpredictability.

different kinds of drama. heterosexual rp might open up to thirsty boys who want to be your girlfriend ooc in addition to ic. Ohh, so you mean if she, being a woman, plays a homosexual male, who gets involved with another homosexual male, then hopefully that other character is played by a homosexual male, or a girl, thus lessening her chances of being sought after OOC? basically yes. though in her case a lot of her rp partners were heterosexual females rping as homosexual males.

one of my friends from wow was a female who almost exclusively roleplayed as male homosexual characters primarily because she enjoyed romance but hated the drama associated with straight romance rp. at one point she was RPing as a muscular orc man who was dating a blood elf man who had a chocolate factory (????) and wow i did not know what to do with that information.

Multiplayer Online Battle Arena. League of Legends is the biggest one, but there are others. I can't stand em.

the upside of the rolling system is that the person receiving damage has complete control over how they receive damage, how much damage they received, and why they were hit. maybe you got hit by a fault of your own, for example. maybe they were just having a bad day. maybe you got hit but it only managed to dent/scratch your armor. or maybe it's time to go all out and describe in excruciating detail the extreme level of waterworks going on as your blood gushes everywhere. generally speaking though i usually see all people who consider their characters to be 'fighters' as being roughly comparable. i don't mind being hit by someone whose character is a professional or amateur fighter at all. this of course depends on mutual respect with the people you're RPing with.

I'm male and my character is male. I've only ever RPed as a male character as well. Before I got into RP, my character was fantasia'd female a few times. There are two primary reasons why my character is male--one is that my girlfriend wanted our characters to be a couple, and the other is that I'm not terribly interested in emulating sexuality from a female POV & I think sexuality is a major component of character development. Other than that, though--I do have a little interest in writing a female character. I'm a huge fan of shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and I think that there is an aesthetic to a female action hero who combines the best features of masculinity and femininity to create a hero that can inspire anyone. A hero who nurtures their comrades when they're weak but pushes them harder at the same time. Someone who is simultaneously patient but decisive. I really like that as an aesthetic. If my girlfriend quit FF14 or something i'd consider playing a female character. Though, on the other hand, if she quit FF14, I probably would too, to play whatever she went off to. (unless it was another moba, in which case she can fuck off and play by herself)

how did i not see this post earlier??? hi byrn -
my answer is it wouldn't bother me for someone to RP a RDM around me. for me, there is no job that intrinsically bothers me if someone RPs that job, AS LONG AS the player abides by the lore surrounding it. Sometimes that places very strict requirements on your character. If you abide by those strict requirements, though, no problem. with that in mind, i have seen no indication that RDM has any strict requirements in place that cement you into playing a certain type of character. There are no race requirements, no gender requirements, no employment requirements, and no age requirements. at best, you might require that someone has, at some point, travelled to ala mhigo, or had a friend in their past who was ala mhigan.

hi illust ur my favorite munchkin -
i'm gonna level with you dude, your idea is a far departure from what's familiar in final fantasy. you say that you dont want it to be overbearing, but there's no way it wouldn't be overbearing. it'd overshadow every other detail about your character. if you go through with this, it's your business and you can do what you want, but you should absolutely expect roleplaying to be a monumental task and calling it an uphill battle would be an understatement.
