  1. Every class in the game is dps. It's just up to the healer to determine how to weave dps in to help with the speed of the dungeon. You'll also catch the most flak because your influence is the most noticable.
  2. I usually walk up to anybody. I just need to know that the character in question is IC and not afk. All it really takes is somebody sitting, walking, or targeting me somewhere to direct my character to yours. I do snipe search info from time to time, mostly looking for confirmation if your character is IC. Helps to have some kind of IC signal, like a minion or an article of gear mentioned in your post.
  3. I wouldn't say that FFXIV's community isn't even close to that of a MOBA. For the most part in this game, I've had pleasant experiences from beginning to end. I could highlight some of the most egregious moments that I've had in PvE or RP, but those situations are rare. They just tend to stick in my mind because it is in our nature to highlight the bad, and share it with others. I run DF roulettes almost daily, and the vast majority of those runs are smooth and without issue. I've joined and hosted learning groups for new content, and found those to be very pleasant as well. Maybe I'm just lucky, patient, or know how to communicate to people if they need to improve. I also don't know a lot of people that would treat social interaction as currency to be traded or bartered for in exchange for loot. As for the bad I've experienced in the game, I think that MOBAs are a lot less terrible on that front. I'd rather be insulted to my face about my decisions than to learn about all of the cloaked dialogue that's being shared about me. It's probably because I'm used to more than ten years of MOBA abuse, though I find it's a lot less common the better you are at the game.
  4. I'm not uncertain about people taking my character and blurring the IC and OOC lines. You don't even have to be roleplaying an evil character for negative traits to be assigned to you OOC. It happens all too often and sometimes I'm surprised at the things that get projected onto my character from roleplay. The biggest uncertainty that always lingers is the question, "Are these other people having fun?" It's a common thing now to send very unclear communication when it comes to RP enjoyment. The general method of communicating dislike now is either canceling, saying you're busy, or just saying nothing in hopes that the other person will go away. I find it to be so strange to leave a person hanging like that, I guess I prefer honesty over wondering if canceled RP appointments are just coincidence or a message.
  5. My character is illiterate in Eorzean, but knows how to read the Doman language, and read and write in the Xaelan inter communicative language. It's a big problem for her in terms of communicating with fellow adventurer's and adventurer guilds, missing jobs and events because she can't read bulletin boards. Illiteracy is also an issue with trading, as she's an easy target to get swindled out of gil even if prices are posted. Syf received a translation book for Doman to Eorzean a few months ago, and uses this as a reference to read things now. However the process is long going, because she translates from her tribe's language to Doman and then to Eorzean. Reading a contract for her may take a few hours, so she often bugs others to read for her. It's going to get slowly better, as she'll recognize shapes of common words and add them to her lexicon, but she only reads once or twice a week. It's just not a priority for the character at this moment. It comes up a lot in roleplay, a lot more than I thought it would. Syf tries to avoid it, or feign that she can read. If she gets confronted about it, she'll say that reading isn't useful or needed.
  6. Did they ever fix the damn botting issue? PvP was just infiltrated with .01 second interrupt bots I can't remember wtf the program was called. Honorbuddy. Honestly WoD was a total mess for PvE and PvP. Honor grinding for PVP was a total nightmare. For example. [video=youtube] The game other than that was raid or raid, dungeons become obsolete quickly and after that you have four versions of the same raids. It's so easy and empty until you hit the barrier in heroic or mythic. A lot of content that was promised was cut, and the content that was delivered in patches was not good at all, or entirely pointless.

    I play with an alias as my display name. My character also introduces herself with an alias that's different from the displayed alias. It's just a clear cut case of meta gaming. It makes sense to hide names for characters that might get in trouble for their ethnicity or background. Also makes sense for people that engage in criminal activity to have an alias or a nickname to obfuscate their connections. As the others have mentioned, it's in poor taste to hate somebody over nicknames. Just remember that display names are often used in busier places to get the attention of the player or for easier communication.
  8. Syf means muck, grime or dirt in Polish. Used it to emulate Mongolian names that are given to ward off and confuse evil spirits.

Garuda was the first real skill check in the game when I was leveling, managed to get a full group of 44ish new players and it was essentially an hour of leading people by the nose and getting lead. Had to teach people about the usefulness of focus bars, when to AOE, and had to pop limit break to survive the buster, and it was a close fight. It was fun to run it blind and learn with a group that was willing to talk and improve. Nothing else in the game is skill check until that point, so it's understandable that a lot of players wouldn't know how to handle the mechanics.

  12. You can always come up with different degrees of agreement, that includes how long of a delay there is before the agreement, and how enthusiastic the character is in the response. Edit: You're also going to have to get used to nodding, since questions with yes and no answers are going to be the most numerous in your RP.
  13. A lot of people get around silent characters by using writing. It's a decent method but does have its own limitations that you always have to take into account. It is a slow process, and not everyone can read or see clearly. What I've seen the most is characters that are very expressive with gesticulation and facial expressions, almost to the point where it is comical. Keeping a reference sheet may be handy for facial expressions as well as body language.
  14. My favorite is X, and I've only played X-X7 with a collection series on the Gamecube. I've also played a lot of the handheld Megaman games, Battle Network and all of the Zero and ZX games. Looking forward to any future inspiration games that will come out in the future. My favorite theme is Chill Penguin.
  15. It really depends on the FC and how they want to introduce people. Some RP FCs will require an IC review or interview, and you'll be invited based on those principles. Some FCs will want you to fit in as a person and will work to incorporate your character afterwards. It's best to contact somebody in the group to figure out exactly how their recruiting process goes, and tell them your own preferences for how you want to handle things. Leaving is completely different, and will depend on whether you depart with the FC on good terms or bad, how quickly or slowly it happens. If you don't find the FC fun, or don't find your character fits in IC, then try and leave on good terms. If you wish to roleplay a scene out where the character leaves, let somebody know. Both leaving and joining are based on clear channels of communication, though it's not always so simple.

  17. Maybe I could offer some insight into this thread. I purchased FFXIV and the Heavensward expansion about two weeks ago, looking forward to trying out the job of Dark Knight. I did a little research and found that I needed level 30 in any class in order to play the new jobs offered. But as I reached that milestone, I found out that I would not only have to reach level 50 in order to access Ishgard, I would also need to finish all the story quests from patch 2.0 to 3.0. The total time it took me to finish all the quests was around 120 hours. I know that a lot of these quests were given buffed rewards to smooth out the process, but it's still a long time to ask a person to invest for content that they want to experience. Whether it is a certain job or just relevant PvE content or access to new zones, it's a ludicrous amount of time for a person to invest in. If I had leveled as dps, or if I didn't have this much free time, it could have taken me more than a month and a half of just pure story progression to reach Heavensward content. I don't hate gated content in general, but this enormous gate just made me anxious to rush through stuff that the developers most likely wanted you to savor and enjoy over several months. I did not enjoy most of the story content, the characters didn't get fleshed out enough, and the nature of your character is just to *nod* and do the hard work. I'm glad 4.0 will not need 3.0 to be completed. If I ever want to roll an alt or quit for extended period of time, I won't have to rush myself through quests and content in order to play a new job or do dungeons with my friends.
