    Naming

My seeker is named Claire. Why? Because she was abandoned as an infant, adopted, and midlander raised. There are pretty easy ways to get around naming conventions if one wants. Conventions serve as a baseline, but there are a lot of unique people in Eorzea, and a lot of unique personal backgrounds that exceed the limits of naming conventions. I'm actually surprised by the number of people who do follow naming conventions on Balmung, some who don't even seem to be rpers. I do have another Seeker named A'kaitis, btw, but I think its perfectly acceptable to come up with reasons why yourchar's name might be different.
  2. How do you all set prices ICly for services rendered and trade goods? Do you act like 1 gil = $1? Or maybe 100 gil= $1?
  3. I love to see something like this put into action! Please include: Claire Fialo - Bakery Goods (IC only) Also, the Healing Winds Theater Troupe would be willing to provide entertainment! Send tell to Claire or PM on this site if you want to set something up!
  4. The Healing Winds Theater Troupe is active! Please look for our astounding, jaw-dropping shows in a venue near you! I will also nudge the leader of Unsung Heroes towards this thread (but it isvery active)
  5. Whatever time of day it is in game at the start of RP, I usually go off that. Sometimes I use real life time of day, and sometimes I make it up on a whim. Everyone seems pretty flexible I cringe a liittle every time someone mentions the rain though. It rains SO MUCH in this game, and its hard to keep up with the weather patterns! But, that could just be the way it is in Eorzea!
  6. I would rather something like this be open to all to speak c: Just because someone isn't a FC leader, doesn't mean they don't have valuable input.
  7. So lately, I've seen a number of threads about a more 'community-based' RP style, and while I disagree with a lot of what has been said, (which is fine! I respect everyone's opinion, even if it is not my own) one thing I do agree on is trying to help each other find, enjoy, and enhance our RP experiences. With that in mind, I thought we could make a list of services our characters can offer your characters, in setting up deeper roleplay. Sort of like a 'Yellow Pages' of services. Hopefully this will become self explanatory.... Claire Fialo_(Waitress, Baker, Playwright)______________________ Female Seeker, Age 19. Services Offered: Claire interns at the Bismarck, learning under the culinarians there, and therefore would be willing to act as a waitress for your date, luncheon, or party if we can agree on a time to do so. Or, if you find yourself hanging out at the Bismarck and just want to see if I'm available to add some depth to the experience, just send a tell! Claire is also an accomplished baker, and leader of a theater troupe, so would be willing to possibly cater and/or provide entertainment for some of your events or parties! Healing Winds Theater Troupe_(Entertainers)________________________ The Healing Winds is a theater troupe trying to collect artists, poets, writers, musicians, actors, etc. all in one place to bring entertainment to the land of Eorzea! In addition for putting on our own plays and show, we could be available for hire at your party and event! Contact Claire Fialo to set up some RP! A'kaitis Windsor_(Dance Instructor)_______________________________ Seeker, Female Age 28. Services Offered: Dance Instruction. Whether you're a soldier in need of improved footwork, or a strapping Roegadyn male yearning for the call of a ballet career, Kat is your girl for teaching you the moves you need to hit that perfect pirouette; or get that inner confidence you need to master the dancefloor at the next community ball. Kat could take you on as a client, and guide you through the necessary steps to lead confidentally, and impress the man/woman/chocobo of your dreams! So... hopefully this makes sense, and hopefully people will add their own characters with their own services! I'm sorry to the mods if this is in the wrong place; the goal was to set up rp connections and mini-events, so I thought this forum might work... *shrug*
  8. I'm sorry, but this just doesn't work for me. This is treading waaaayyy too close to territory wars and pissing matches. If I wanted to roleplay the owner of the Bismarck, and call it mine, and say I get to decide who rp's there and who doesn't, that's just.... absurd. So what do you do if you want to roleplay a twin adder, and there is an 'unofficial' twin adder FC, but you can't stand the way it is managed, or who is running it? Are you SOL? Do you then have to role on a new server so you can try to 'claim' that storyline there? Compromise is great. On this we fully agree. My FC tried to run an event recently on the ship in LL (who's name I always forget). We didn't post it publicly, and when we showed up, another group was already there! We quickly relocated, because it was easy to do, and compromise, as you said, makes for a better community. On the flipside of this, I run a theater group that meets weekly at the Mih Khetto theater in Gridania. When I showed up one week, the stage had already been taken! To try and demand use of the stage because... well... my group claimed it first so it's first come first serve.... would've been kind of obnoxious of me. It just feels pretty limiting to say 'only this group can RP the Maelstrom, so if you want to include that in your RP, you have to go through them'. I'm sorry, but I love my FC. I plan to keep all my characters there. I should be allowed that freedom, and the freedom of saying one of those characters works for one of the Grand Companies, without having to leave the FC i love, just to join an 'unofficial' one. And it's unfair to the players of tomorrow, if they spend hours into creating a character and backstory, only to log on and find all the 'choice roles' have been filled, and that in order to rp the story they wanted too, they have to follow a certain path. RP should be about pushing boundaries, not limiting them.
  9. The Healing Winds Theater Troupe will be holding an audition session this Thursday, Nov. 14th, 8pm EST for an upcoming event they will be having. This is an auditions session only. So no audience please! This is purely for actors, writers, and musicians to show up and tryout for parts! There are six roles to fill, listed below; *The Victim: (Either gender) *The Boyfriend: A jealous, sulky male. But what's he jealous of? (Male, but a female CAN play a male) * The maitre'd: Having served the meal, the waiter certainly had access. But did they have motive? (Either gender) * The Doctor: A doctor WAS in the house, and tried to save the dying victim... or did (s)he?(Either gender) * The Thug: a nefarious criminal just HAPPENED to be dining in the restaurant the night of the murder. But did they have any reason to kill the victim? (Preferably Male) The setting of the scene will be a reputable restaurant, in which a murder takes place! Clues will be sprinkled throughout the tale to give audience members a chance to guess whodunnit at the end. Unlisted roles are two detectives, played by myself and a friend. After the auditions, there will be a couple of rehearsals, before we open up the actual show for the community to enjoy. Hope to see you there! =) EDIT: Derp.... leave it to me to forget where to put the place... it will be at the Mih Khetto Amphitheater in Old Gridania. Any questions, or if you'd like to audition one on one because you cannot attend Thursday night, please contact Claire Fialo

  11. I am actually COMPLETELY with Claris on this one. Everyone is entitled to find the RP they find most enjoyable, and it sounds like Claris' group handled it responsibly. IN a high-octane, action-packed rp scenario like the one described, you simply cannot expect the greater community to get involved on that, so you keep it to your group. What's the harm in that? Furthermore, I'd say Ildur's example of the bruise and battered person is essentially the same thing. You are introducing a disruptive element that frankly, not everyone is going to want to get involved with. And why would they? They don't know the character. Sure they might report it to the local (conjurer/healer/priest/doctor), but what else are they supposed to do? Especially in tavern roleplays were brawls and bloodying people up are kind of common. Multiple universes make for peaceful coexistence. If everyone compromises for some sort of community wide, baseline, 'acceptable' RP... nobody wins. Because you have to play everything safe, remove any experimental elements, and force people into arguments. As an example, how do you handle frequent dungeon runs? I've heard several viable, and interesting ways to address this. But you CANNOT force ONE way on everyone, because people are bound to disagree. Let people find what works best of them, and go with it. It's okay if we employ different methods, so long as we support our differences, not nitpick over them. I had a situation where a character claiming to be a high-ranking official of the Maelstrom, caused a scene at the Bismarck trying to arrest someone. The only problem was, no one recognized her authority as Maelstrom, and when they didn't go along with the scene, the player resorted to ((OOC namecalling)). That player has EVERY right to roleplay a high-ranking Maelstrom authority, in HER universe. But you cannot force that sort of thing on the greater community, because what's to stop me from playing a higher ranking official who then fires her? You have to find a group of people who accept that role. As another example, I got in a debate with a guildie on how Raise should be handled in game. I strongly dislike removing the consequence of death from my RP. I roleplay like Raise is bringing someone back from the brink of death. My guildie did not see it this way. Raise, by definition, is bringing someone back from the dead. We were both right, and neither of us was wrong. It all comes down to taste and preference, and we should encourage and tolerate our fellow rpers for pursuing what meets their unique wishes. Bottom line is, you can choose to play within the safer, community wide rules and work well within the guidelines, thereby opening yourself up to a broader spectrum of rp. Or, you can do your own thing because you recognize its not something the greater community will agree upon. Both are valid. Both are fun. And both should be encouraged as growing the artform that is RP.
  12. Events are often chaotic, crowded, and confusing as hell. They do little in serving any of my rp needs, and I think a lot of people feel the same way (though not all). There are many good events (and I've been to some =) ) but they take time, thought, and dedicated people to plan and run. 2-3 community events per months honestly isn't a bad number Part of the problem lies in the fact that people seem to think events need to be these grand, elaborate schemes that people will talk about for years to come. No. Just... no. An event can be simple. Something as simple as; hey let's have a footrace from Ul'dah to Vesper Bay! The very core of an event is to try to get people to interact, and the core often gets buried under layers of complexity. The simpler, more easy to understand, and more accessible an event is, the greater chances there are that many people will enjoy themselves. Its possible to run an event that doesn't need a big setup and weeks of planning, and we need more of those going on!
  13. Was a very fun event! Thanks a lot for putting this on!
  14. Someone just posted this topic yesterday http://ffxiv-roleplayers.com/showthread.php?tid=5406
  15. Yesssss <3 Miyazaki. Also, I love 'lighter' RP myself, and tend not to stray too far into dark territory.
  16. Great, hope to see you! The early event time was to try and make it easier for international timezones, who often don't get thought of when events are planned :c
  17. K'nahli, I love ur market day idea and would gladly participate. I had actually been having a similar idea, and I have ICly been a waitress at the Bismatck It's just.... can we not have it in the actual marketplaces? Those spots lagfreeze my computer like crazy >_<
  18. Hmm, I'd like to clarify that I always RP out in the open too (using Say) because I love meeting strangers and new rpers. If I am on a rude character, or an impersonable one, I will frequently send tells just to let people know; 'hey! I'm not responding b/c my character is a b*tch!' To me that is just common courtesy, but I can't say I expect everyone to adopt that. That's for them to decide. Rosekitten touched upon it being hard to break into groups, and I think many people seek a highly detailed, intricate plotline that plays out like a movie or novel. That's well within their rights, but those type of stories can only realistically support a handful of characters. It drives me batty when guilds offer these intensive plots as either mandatory, or as the only means of finding RP in that guild, because more often than not, it devolves into 'the officers get to rp a lot with each other, while everyone else stands around and watches'. And typically, those who are getting their RP fix don't seem to see why its a problem when others are not. Or they say 'theyshould find their own way into the story', which is impossible, frankly, because you are creating a gauntlet of barriers for them. Imo, the best guilds offer a variety of different types of RP, with plenty of opportunities for everyone to get involved. Those who run tightknit, heavily involved plots, should really keep the numbers of their group low so as to keep everyone involved, or construct their story in such a way that it doesn't have a significant impact on those who were unable to get involved, and were therefore unable to play a role in shaping their futures.
  19. The weekly sunday event is just games for people to participate in We aren't quite big enough to do plays yet, but when we do, I'll be sure to post it on the RPC! Also, there is/was a LS called Soliquoy run by Xenedra that was all about this. I'm not sure what their activity level is. My little troupe is called the Healing Winds. I hope we can bring some entertainment to Eorzea in the near future!
  20. I do actually run a drama/theater club Tier We meet every Sunday 1pm EST at the Gridanian theater for any one interested, and we also have a separate Linkshell. So far we've only doing improv acting skits and games, but would love to expand on this! A dinner murder mystery has been discussed, as has acting out scenes from other Final Fantasy games. Any interested send tell to Claire Fialo in game, or show up to the event Sunday!
  21. But.... under your name it says 'burglar'. Does this mean you are bad at your job? Also, how the hell do people have 6 million gil already >_>
  22. There are 2800 members on this site. For the purpose of this discussion, lets just say 2000 of them rolled on Balmung. In any realistic town of that size, you'll be acquaintances with about 50, be friends with about 20, and know of about 100-200 (studies show the average facebook friend count is 150. But do you actually know all 150 of those people?) And that's if you are an outgoing personality. For a lot of characters, it makes sense to only have a handful of friends ICly. To stay within what feels comfortable. IC rudeness, if it fits the character, is a non-issue. OOCly, its a different story. A majority of people have rather diverse, yet generally specific tastes on RP, on everything from romance to combat, to how dark or humorous they like to keep things. It should come as no surprise that when you find people who share your taste, you tend to RP with them a lot, and develop rather involved interpersonal storylines. Its that progression of character that keeps people coming back, and you don't always get thet from random meetups. That said, I do feel people need to break out of their rp shells more often, try out new things, and be prepared to see their characters go in directions they hadn't anticipated. OOC rudeness is pointless and not necessary. A little OOC communication can go a long way to avoid any sort of misunderstandings and hurt feelings. But in the end, there are only so many hours in the day. I work FT, and dwell in an FC of 170+. Trying to juggle RP time with them, on top of work and trying to level is daunting enough, let alone trying to find time to interact with the greater community. I love my FC. Its a comfortable home I know I'm going to enjoy my time with, and that guarantee cannot be made in the community as a whole. Time constraints, and my desire to enjoy and progress several of my characters storylines should not be seen as 'cold'. I have no problems interacting with random add ons when I am rping. I have no problem rping with anyone at least once. I find both to be a lot of fun, and everyone should interact with their community at least once a week. But in RP, just as in RL, it is the time spent with 'friends' that is the most rewarding, and it is up to each user to decide how they, the player, and they, the character, wish to spend their time. Tl;dr: OOCly people should be polite and considerate of their community, but ICly their character dictates who and when they interact with.
  23. I actually do have a miqo'te dance instructor believe it or not.... but she fell far into 'rarely used alt' status
  24. Lalas OOCly, Lalas just really push my awwwww cute buttons. ICly, it really depends on my character, though I have yet to play a character that doesn't take them seriously. I think Lalas can be limiting in that a lot of people feel uncomfortable bringing any sexualization or romantic plots into their rp, b/c they are childlike. Additionally, when they do bring that into play, it can make outsiders uncomfortable. I've seen a large increase in Lala's being rp'd lately though, which can only help educate ppl OOCly and ICly Miqo's The plain honest truth is that Seekers play into a lot of adult fantasies and lore only seems to enhance this. First off, their catgirls (or boys). Secondly, their tribe arrangement is pretty harem-like. Thirdly, as Lidia already pointed out, Seeker npcs and quests have a LOT to do with sexualization. I believe there 's even an npc that rrrolls his rrrr's as I've seen other Miqo's do. In the end, there's no wrong way to play your cat if you have justifications of it, but lore seems to strongly support a sexual culture for tribal kitties, whereas those who grew up in cities would probably be more conservative.
