This is hilarious. Good find. Bleh. Let's hope I won't do it again I guess.

This is not a mistake a non native speaker would do. Xihsa'li seems to have covered my thoughts pretty well. It's really something that makes me greet my teeth. I have a very low tolerance IRL with people of my own native language that can't spell properly (except for dyslexia, etc... if they never got the chance to get a doctor on it when they were young). This translates badly with me in other languages too. A few sparse mistakes are fine. But this is also an exercise in writing. I don't care that much with anything OOC. But when it's about writing roleplay, it's like reading a book with gross mistakes like that all over the place. It's very repelling.

The RP Healer Manifesto, slightly cross-posted from Tumblr
Valence replied to Nevivi Nevi's topic in RP Discussion
I have a hard time understanding what the issue is then... Do you have examples of something that happened and that you consider poor or to avoid entirely? I'm trying to see where that manifesto comes from to be honest, maybe I'll see better with concrete examples... -
The RP Healer Manifesto, slightly cross-posted from Tumblr

The thing is pretty simple: if you're doing our own private thing with your own private rules, then use party chat. If you use local chat for various other reasons (more than 8 people being the main eye sore with the game chat system), then just tell intruders that it's private or whatever, depending on how they intrude, or else really. If you're doing something in a public event or venue, and it's not your event, it's also very simple: you aren't entitled to who can react and who cannot react to what your characters do here. Unless the whole group suddenly decides suddenly to back you up or something, you're basically just throwing an OOC tantrum cause things don't go your way. If you're into very scripted, rigid storylines and scenarii that don't mesh well with impromptu and the unexpected, then don't show up to public events because they are the epitome of this. And if you are the organizer of said public event and wish to impose your own restrictive rules, that's your own right, but make sure everyone is warned before entering though (though I really have a hard time how you would even do that without making your event semi private or private anyway). This is also why I have no shame in saying that I don't show up to public or semi public events, or even roleplay a lot with foreigners without proper OOC introduction and feel because I'm unable to deal with widely different views on lore and RP style, and what I'm looking for into RP. I'm a nitpicky prick and plainly admit it. I also don't get how it's such a bad thing that someone is "stealing" the spotlight off your character though. Someone barges in for whatever reason? So what? "NO YOU CAN'T BECAUSE THIS IS MY HEALING MINE ALONE!" Sorry for the hyperbole, but that's exactly how it sounds. Now then, don't get me wrong, I actually believe that OOC communication be important, and that politely asking before barging in or doing something can be healthy depending on the context. Like, "I'm going to make my character enter with a bomb, is that okay with the organizers if nobody can't stop it and it blows up"? I mean totally. You're just turning the whole event into something else, yours. But... "is it okay if my character shows up and start berating yours for healing poorly?" or "is it okay if my character tries to help by healing because that's what they would spontaneously do?" being bad? Really? And then what? "Is that okay if my character assists yours with their gun to kill the bad guy here?" No, because they can't steal your spotlight? Nothing makes one or the other better. One is gameplay-roleplay oriented, the other is character-roleplay oriented. I just have my own tastes on the matter and prefer the latter for its realism, unpredictability and focus on characters instead of goals, and as a GM this is also my view on things: I always try to offer a lot of hooks for players to have their own characters have different goals or put their difference of ideals into practice. No conflict is stale and boring and doesn't spur character development, and this is also true in most stories. This is just a personal opinion. Now that I have more experience too I can also detect better when one or more people of the other group is part of the experience before it festers. But no, I guess I prefer not to go back so I can stay on the superficial and shallow way I read the entire thing. -

Don't bother then. I find them insufferable myself though. :c -

Valence replied to Nevivi Nevi's topic in RP Discussion
Pardon me for saying so, and that is why at first I didn't tell it right away, but this is part of what makes public events insufferable to me. That kind of manifestos and OOC RP police. I understand that players want to bring some order out of good will with a so called RP OOC etiquette above the basics of godmodding, being a general nuisance, etc, but eventually, this is trying to apply usually mostly private OOC RP rules that are usually widely agreed upon and shared by everyone in a close knit private setting, to a public setting where RP styles are night and day and probably more numerous than RPers themselves. I'm a strong believer in free flowing, self regulating RP. RP is about common sense, not manifestos. If my character wants to heal someone because they genuinely feel they can and they are the first ones on the spot, they will do it. If they feel like the current healer is doing a botched job, they will try to take their place or give them direction, and maybe be a general obnoxious nuisance yes. So what? RP characters can't have flaws and be assholes? And if something doesn't fit with me because someone is trying to godmode their way out of the ensuing conflict, then i'll see until what point I can continue to take it and make my own character eat crows, before bowing out if that's what it comes to. And guess what, the more a character proves to be an ass, the more other characters are going to react accordingly. This is all about RP causality. This isn't even a specific healer thing. There is no free pass for healers more than anything else there. These kinds of manifestos tend to make everything asinine and bleached by what people think to be polite etiquette, when it really isn't more than just a way to enforce your RP style upon everyone else in a public setting where they might not share your views on things. If what I usually call "collaborative friendly pve RP" is your thing, then go for it, your manifesto is probably going to work, in a private setting with similarly minded people. Having a lot of tabletop and RP experience now, I can safely say that I have met 2 types of RPers: the gameplay players, and the character players. I've butted heads a few times with the former that don't put character consistency above all else: they put the group effort above all else, and the result (loot, experience, progress, beating the game and the boss), basically players playing a RPG. The latter will always put their character first, and make them react to whatever happens according to their character, consequences be damned. This can lead to party wipes, to conflict, or anything. And as you can guess, those players tend to be loathed by roleplay groups that try to avoid conflict at all costs because in their mind, every character and player should be following the same etiquette and going toward the same goal: beating the game and the story. It's the same thing than if I showed up with a lore manifesto and told everyone to shut the fuck up and stop playing things out of the bonds of the lore because I think this is the polite thing to do, the ultimate RP etiquette. How do you think various groups are going to answer to that in a public setting? -

Ahh it's already much better... Would it be possible to make the colour lighter and/or the outline thinner? Right now it's darker than the titles still. Of course if the experiment actually displeases everyone already feel free to revert back to the previous state. I'm just a finicky ass when it comes to styles and web layout. -

No, I'm on desktop. This is the same deal as having something written in bold next to something written in standard text grease, except here to me it's even more magnified. They directly attract the eye and it's the first thing that act as a magnet when you open the page. If the background wasn't filled in deep indigo/black as it is right now, but just with an outline, it would probably not be a problem to me. -

Is it possible to completely and totally nuke, greatly lessen, or deactivate on my side these super annoying labels under every thread? They are big, black, bold and literally ruin reading and clarity (with a Ruin IV proc), and take priority over their very own thread titles. Edit: another question now that I'm at it, is it possible to remove or deactivate at least on my end the prompt we get when we want to mark all the forum as read? -
Auracyte has started to be covered more in the recent Return to Ivalice raid. It is notably used to temporarily use primal powers. The lore blurb on Cuchulainn in the lorebook also speaks how auracyte based weapons were used to combat primals in the 13th Shard, and storing their primal energies. Except they leaked and slowly drove their bearers mad and eventually changed them for the worst. ( not to be confused with white auracyte )

Valence replied to Nevivi Nevi's topic in RP Discussion
I guess this is why I don't RP with strangers, since god modding or "differences in playstyle" are pretty much inevitable. When someone swoops in and tries to take over and does not take into account your own RP actions and replies, it falls into that category indeed. If not, then I feel that those commandments are pretty much out of place because they base everything off OOC, which is pretty bad for a good free flowing RP. If everyone is respectful of each other, many bullet points stop applying and even prove counter productive. Also, keep in mind that RPing in the open in public exposes you to people coming in and potentially interrupting. If you're not ok with that, and do not want to send them the link to a lengthy list of commandements every time it happens, RP in private. RPing in public is like going through DF or PF honestly. If you can't accept to deal with all the differences and ideals and personalities you're going to find inside, then don't. -
Slurping milk and mewing is chic and cute huh? Yuck.

I'm probably going to pass for the lore nazi but I do believe that while the lore gives us enough of wiggle room to accommodate ourselves, I also believe that a lot of what is exposed ingame and in other sources tend to always point toward a general archetype that defines pretty well already what a miqo'te is, and to a lesser extent, what an au'ra is. Before anything, they are part of the Spoken races of Man, and therefore, are human (and not beast, like beast tribes). Secondly, there is a clear distinction between cultural uprising and traditions, and racial traits that also play a part. For example, tribal miqo'te certainly exhibit a lot of characteristics born from their biology (the male/female ratio, the stamina/agility and acute senses, etc... in short, everything that is described again in the lorebook). Then we have many examples of city miqo'te that have totally forsaken most of their tribal culture as seen in Ala Ghiri or other places, and live in couples like other races instead of harems or keeper female families. In general though, most miqo'te characters we meet, like M'naago, who really come from a tribal background and are still more or less part of it, even if now intermingled with the resistance in her case, don't let anything transpire of said background and speak and behave like any other Spoken race. We also have other miqo'te, especially set in ARR's quests, that definitly exhibit a lot of their tribal traits, even when they seem to be integrated into non tribal societies. I'm thinking of the commander of the Quiver's Ram in the Serpent Adders (Miah Molkot), who makes a heavy use of "meow" instead of "me" in her speech as a pun in the english translation. Some others like the Nelhah hearer from the black mage quests also rolls his "r" in the french translation, but isn't the only occurence of miqo'te doing that in both languages anyway). While all of those can definitely be a quirk of specific language translations, it's still said that most miqo'te names are hard to pronounce, especially the "h" sounds, that are unique soundings in the miqo'te tongue. These are a few among many examples and while miqo'te are definitely not cats, and as shown by Y'shtola (not in Dissidia but in ffxiv itself for a better source), they don't exactly like being compared to cats either. They are human, but, they have a lot of little quirks specific to their race, as well as a specific biology. Regarding au'ra, it's a bit more vague but what we see of it doesn't seem to show that they are very different from humans either. Their specific reptilian parts can regrow and whatnot, their hearing works differently as well for the same result, but otherwise, at least for the Raen, their biology is similar to hyurs and whatnot, and their society is well integrated into the doman and hingan hyur culture (except for specific isolated settlement like Sui-no-sato, which aren't the norm: Raens are mostly comprised of proud vassals of doman daimyos and ji-samurai in eastern villages). For xaela, it's a bit different. We have a better example of something similar to tribal miqo'te at play: their biology is more different since they have more strength than any other race (including roes, just not the weight to match it). And their culture is very tribal, therefore very unique and with different shades of morality and values. But unlike miqo'te, we haven't seen them exhibit specific behavioral patterns and quirks specific to their race (yet?).

Hello, If you're interested Suen it at your disposal for any hooks or story you might have in mind! -
I would tend to say, nothing exactly like that in the lore we know per se, but we've seen so many different types of voidsent with unique abilities and properties that at this point I think you're pretty safe by making up your own. The voidsent that is responsible for turning the whole population of Nym into Tonberries especially comes to mind.

Well I for one am very happy that a lot of their patches, old and new, actually don't spend their time portraying a shonen WoL going all around gung ho defeating everyone and whatnot. Screw that noise. I'm happier with more calm, subtle things, and to be honest, quite fed up to always be the center of the spotlight and saving the day. Feels better to just play a scion like any other, for once.
-
I really liked that MSQ patch... until Zenos. Let him rest in peace ffs. If you really have to resurrect people AGAIN, at least do it with... I don't know, Gaius, or Regula... My guess is she does get her memories back... but then also has the memories of the "nice times" she had as just Tsuyu. So she'll be forced to reconcile whether she wants to return to being Yotsuyu or continue on as Tsuyu. Whether she's willing to come to terms with what was done to her, what she did, and... whether or not she's willing to let go and start over. This. There are a number of jdramas with that as the plot. And it feels extremely jrpg to amnesia plot a redemption. ...I'd prefer they not. One semi-redeemed villain was enough. And Fordola at least made sense. I'm pretty convinced that since Fordola and Yotsuyu having been always portrayed in absolute parallels in their own background, situation, victims of the empire indoctrination/use, etc, that Yotsuyu is probably planned to follow the same pattern.

Are there any rules to having a non-traditional background?
Valence replied to AquaNinja's topic in Character Workshop
I don't see anything wrong with that as long as you're aware of what you're getting into I guess? Keep in mind that inter species relationships are somewhat very taboo and shunned in most places and cultures in Eorzea. But they happen. And often, the offspring aren't in a good place to grow up. This would put your whole family out of most societies, unless they find a nice safe spot of more understanding people I suppose. The fact that they mix both naming conventions also implies probably that it's not an isolated incident that happened between two people only and that they are a family or community having chosen to live like that. It isn't impossible, just keep in mind that so far Doma, Hingashi, or anything part of eastern Othard at least, only have native midlander hyurs, Au'ra (raen and xaela) and roegadyns. But since even Hingashi isn't totally closed to trade and foreigners, you can of course find other races around, albeit in smaller amounts and most of them just foreigners. For example, Hingashi being the reclusive island nation that it is, only allows foreigners in the foreigner district in the port of Kugane. Doma is another beat entirely. The nation has been subjugated for decades by the Empire and thus invaded by the imperial army, which is comprised of true garleans yes, but even more of a load of conscripts of various races (eorzeans, ilsabardians, othardians, etc). It's a big mess. Sharlayan is a good possibility and we know they have a lot of different faces living there. Among them, elezens, miqo'te, lalafells... Pretty much everything. It would be good to check the lorebook for better demographics but I'm at work right now. We don't know a lot about the demographics of Thavnair as far as I know. Maybe Sounssy will have specific info on that but on the top of my head, I don't see any. But Thavnair is a huge sea trade hub connecting all the continents and therefore witnesses a LOT of passing by countless different cultures. It's not really a stretch to imagine that most races probably live there now, and unlike Hingashi, I don't think Thavnair is closed to foreigners in their inner lands. Well, it's not because you live in the same city as celebrities, or on the same archipelago, that you necessarily have met them... Keep in mind that they aren't that famous since the Scions have always been a rather secretive society until very recently. Also, the Scions are a fairly recent entity since it was born from the merging of the Circle of Knowing, a Sharlayan group focused on knowledge and helping foreign nations, lead by Louisoix and composed of Y'shtola, Thancred, Urianger, and all that jazz, and the Path of the Twelve, a fledging group of amateurs possessing the power of the echo and trying to do good in Eorzea, founded by Ascillia (Minfillia) and where the warriors of light from 1.0 initially get involved. This touches a whole different subject and encompasses a vast amount of discussions, so... Briefly, some RPers choose to play as the WoL with a group of friends and stick together since obviously not everybody can be the WoL. The majority of Rpers however generally just play a character detached from the main story of the game, because eventually you don't necessarily have to RP the same character that you see in the cutscenes and the story. Some do it and have fun doing so, some don't and also have fun doing so. We have known since 1.0 that the echo isn't exactly a common occurence, but it's not something specific to only a handful of people either. It's a rare trait much like the Force is a rare trait in Star Wars. It's also pretty unique in most of its bearers. -

This is also why the fledging republic of Garlemald was constantly being bullied by their ilsabardians neighbors until they discovered the ceruleum engine. -
In short, yes. Stated directly from the lorebook, a simple skill like Flash used by gladiators is about concentrating aether in the tip of their blade and unleashing it to blind every enemy around, for example. Then of course, when you start entering into all the skills for paladin that use MP like, Clemency and Holy Spirit and whatnot, it's hard not to see them as magic spells... which they are. To extend a bit on that with other generalities: - Monks are all about opening chakras in their bodies, channeling aether through their limbs and allowing them to perform superhuman feats or aetherial blasts from their fists. Mantra is also pure burst of harmonious aether. - Dragoons use aether to jump and perform various abilities. Azure dragoons like Estinien and the WoL also learned to use the blood of the dragon from the Eye to unleash a whole new set of attacks. - Ninja execute mudra signs to create powerful ninjutsu effects, simplified and fast simplifications of otherwise long winded incantations with pentagrams and circles, which are basically another way to cast magic. Ninjutsu is about summoning spells and curses, instead of aetherial contrusts like carbuncles/faeries/egi basically. - Archers and bards can infused their arrows with wind aspected aether. I suspect their powerful songs to be related to aether as well but that's hard to tell. - Warriors and dark knights for examples are both driven by pure essences (inner beast and the abyss) that they can find within them, one primal animal, the other inner darkness. Those directly feed on their inner aether. Unleash for example, is directly fed on the dark knight rage and pain and manifested through aether. - Machinists turn their own body aether reserves as energy feeding their aetherotransformer that converts it into levin aspected aether to power their whole arsenal. Machinists are almost like mages really, except they use artificial contraptions that cast for them instead of various traditional casting techniques. - And then, Limit Breaks themselves really.
-
You would have to trick a voidsent into getting in your auracyte in the first place though. Nabriales get caught in there precisely when the WoL and the Scions overcome his physical manifestation and kill him, forcing him to retreat into aetherial form, which gets directly caught in the stone. The idea behind white auracyte was to entrap and kill an aetherial form of something that couldn't just die when killed in his physical form... To play Mhach with what you have, the South Shroud around camp tranquil could do just fine. Or the west area in Mor Dhona as well maybe. Anything with swamps really.
-
Note that Shattoto was probably a very powerful thaumaturge of her time and a case could be made that resources still matter at least a bit. Same as the Coco brother that has a very limited magical ability. Or like why some people have more anima than others who can't teleport or use aetherytes (which is actually a lot of people), when the Scions are even jealous of the WoL that can somehow cross continents by teleportation alone. In any case, Shattoto in the 60-70 part get to inhabit the body of Lalai, and she immediately sees that this body is weak compared to what she had in her life. She complains all the time that after the smallest feat of thaumaturgy, she feels exhausted and very limited. She even tells you that after your first fight, you're lucky she has such a weak body at her disposal.
-
Yes you're right. To me it's more a problem of knowledge and skill more than resources. You first need the knowledge to execute those arts, and this is why they are often locked behind job crystals that only open to their wielders if they have the required level of skill and knowledge to start learning. And continue to unlock new secrets when they are deemed ready. Then, you just need talent and skill really. The WoL is insanely powerful because they're 1) talented and 2) backed by Hydaelyn herself. And they're incredibly fast to learn anything because they have access to all the best sources of arcane there is, and very often the only remaining teachers in the world. Mercenary already answered most of it, but I want to add that red magic, being an unique combination of black and white magic, can perfectly well tap into Hydaelyn's lifesource. The Red Mages of old specifically chose not to out of ethics since they were the direct survivors of the calamity that was the doom of their direct ancestors. There is a direct reference to that in the RDM quests, but I'm unable to find it back this time, apologies for that. X'rhun Tia just says that to make up for the loss of energy by just using their own aether, red mages focus everything through their blades and gem to channel it and retain black/white magic power that way.
-
What are you refering to? The Meteor? The golems? Shattoto? My apologies but I'm not totally sure to see your point...? Can you clarify a bit? Honestly, I thought mentionning it's part of the lorebook and which page and what main quote can be of interest was enough. I didn't expect you not to know about the Encyclopedia Eorzea, the lorebook so my apologies. As said above it's on the SE store and was released a bit before Stormblood hit. But you don't really need the lorebook confirmation here to see how illegal it is. We already knew that way before because that's the whole main point of the 50-60 quests. If you require more quotes, please look at those Sounssy provided. I would have been happy to help but it takes a bit of time to parse through game script and find the relevant ones.
