  1. I could be wrong but I kind of remember seeing a Miqo'te in the Arcanist Guild where you can see them... I assume training their Carbuncles. Besides, while it's likely to say that the majority of Miqo'te are not inclined to higher intellectual pursuits, if we as players can break the mold of the norm there is nothing that says that generations before us were not capable of it as well. Personally I think it could be really cool to see characters that might fit the naming conventions but don't fall into the societal norms for their race. I wouldn't necessarily associate Miqo'te with cockney prostitutes or sailors either, but we have those!
  2. Welcome welcome! Glad to see another Whovian! Enjoy yourself, have a look around, don't be shy and ask lots of questions if you need to! Hope to see you around more! EXCLAMATION POINT!!!1
  3. I'm in no way an old timer in this community, though I'm not in any way new to FFXIV. I played during 1.0, even if it wasn't long. With that being said I can still see the points on both sides, new players feel overwhelmed by the old community, or just want to be trail blazers and define the community on a new server the same way a lot of the older players did on Balmung. However on the side of the older players it may seem a little like these new players are coming into their home (the RPC) and causing a rift in it by splitting people between the two servers. Every time these threads pop up with people trying to decide which server to join, it only reminds them that after the split to Gilgamesh their once unified community is not divided.
  4. Who are you to stop them..?? You won't stand for it.. what will you do? Oust them from Gilgamesh? It's not your server.. o_O I can't believe you're saying what I think you're saying.. Its not about stopping them, no its not my server, but will I let it be known that being part of the community its not cool? Yes I will. Please don't put words in my mouth. But as someone who is seen as representing the server on this site. Yes I will gladly tell them that your ways are not welcome. We don't have to talk we don't have to like each other, but I won't lie to them either. No, its not cool, it doesn't make things better it makes them worse, and honestly I'd prefer not to see it. People can go where they want. but as someone who is trying to unify the roleplayers on the server, especially with two linkshells. No, I don't want to deal with them. If others are cool with them fine. But I'm not. And taking a quote from Freelance Wizards book, I hope the community as a whole feels the same that is coming to Gilgamesh. Because I too am of the school that certain types of attitudes should be slashed and burned when it comes to roleplay. Clques are non inclusive and can shun other or completely lock them out. Please understand I am talking about the jerks of the cliquey types. There is nothing wrong with keeping to yourselves but those who can be jerks about it bringing all sorts of negative behavior that leads to bad rp stereotypes, rp server deaths and the like? Yeah Rock Sandbourne doesn't like you because you do more harm than good. So go away. A good example of this already happening is the shunning of the Reddit and 4chan communities. Both have groups interested in roleplay but are already being shunned by some in the roleplay community. This ain't cool, it just ain't so if someone has a problem with me not wanting to deal with people who lock people out of roleplay for ANY reason and I'm talking about people who genuinely WANT to roleplay well guess we just aren't talking anymore. Trust me you won't be missed. And in my book that's great that they want to keep to themselves. Limitless Sky and Coalition OOC will be glad to not hand you a pearl. No it isn't my server, but am I going to try my best to lead by example? Yep What about groups that are invitation only because they are extremely picky about who they allow into their circle of friends and what not? Not everyone wants to RP with everyone else, and some people prefer requiring applications and what not. Do you consider these LS or FCs as being cliques because they don't allow everyone to join them and stick mostly to themselves? I think cliques are more a matter of perception, what you see as being a clique someone else may view as merely being cautious and close knit.
  5. I think the problem is how you went about saying it. You quoted Aysun saying cliques will happen, then you replied simply with "nope" and then continued from there making it sound like you were speaking for everyone. The issue I have with this is it really isn't your place to tell anyone how to RP. You say you're not elitist, but you also say you won't tolerate a certain type of roleplayer. Even though I believe cliques can be detrimental to a community, I also believe that they are an inevitable part of any community.
  6. I don't want to come across as sounding rude, but can you honestly claim to speak for the entirety of the Gilgamesh community? You may not tolerate it, but it doesn't necessarily mean it's not happening and you're just not aware of it. Edit: Aysun just said pretty much exactly what I was thinking.
  7. Something I just want to add so that all the new players can see this in case it was not obvious already. No matter what server you join you will never be made to feel like you are not a part of the overall RPC community. The great thing about this community is that our friendships and discussions transcend servers, so never feel like just because you choose one server the other server will alienate you.
  8. ^This pretty much, there is a strange amount of animosity between Legacy Program players and Non-Legacy players on the beta forums. There are some players who absolutely refuse to play on the same server as Legacy members, and there are some people who only want to play with Legacy members. Because of this I think it's kind of a knee jerk reaction to sort of respond to this kind of thing.
  9. You answered your own question. Balmung is only for Legacy players, meaning people who played the original FFXIV. You will not be able to roll a new character there for QUITE some time. Gilgamesh or bust my friend. False. Legacy Servers are the only place you can currently play a character you had during 1.0, but they are not exclusive to old characters. You are completely capable of joining Balmung even if you are brand new to the game.
  10. You're totally right, I got the names confused. I called them that to make it easier to understand for those new to the lore and point out that they are Paladins and not knights. That's all. No no, I wasn't trying to correct you. I was just saying what they were called, though I ended up being wrong myself!
  11. You're totally right, I got the names confused.
  12. The people you're referring to are the Sultanate, who as I said would be the closest thing to actual knights in Ul'dah given they're hand picked by the Sultana. As far as I know only a small handful of them are actually named character, during one point in the main scenario in Ul'dah you see a ton of them without names.
  13. My only gripe with the whole knight thing is that traditionally it requires a sovereign to actually grant you the title, so as far as a knight of Ul'dah goes it would require the Sultana to grant you the title, and typically that would make you a part of her Sultanate. The other thing is that Knights weren't always gallant and adventurous, a lot of times they were glorified medieval celebrities.
  14. -8/3: Added the website, though it's still a WIP. Also will be revising a lot of information to be more streamlined and easier to access. We're removing the public front aspect of our idea, so there will no longer be a company tied to the secret order.
  15. I think you might have mis-read something, I have been following info fairly close and I never seen that. Show me a link to that info and I will absolutely retract my statement I looked it up, and it looks like you were right. Seems like it was one million signups.
  16. That can definitely be arranged! Contact me via PM, or if you'd prefer you can message me on skype. Let me know how you want to proceed and I'll contact you with the details.
  17. 1 million people registered for the beta, only a small fraction of that were accepted to participate. This def represents more then .1% of the playerbase EDIT: also you say that surveys here show opposite results, thats probably due to the fact that everyone here is biased in that we all RP, this survey would draw more of an unbiased response since it has people participating from all different play styles, servers, and regions. Where the surveys done here are biased to a couple servers and all RP'ers. I was pretty sure Yoshida said something about there being over 900,000 players IN beta as of phase 3.
  18. I never take any of these things seriously because they just don't account for the vast number of people actually playing the game. We know that there were about 1,000,000 registered users in beta, and even if we assume that a quite a few of these are not active, and some of them are multiple accounts registered to the same person, we still only see a tiny fraction of the total playerbase represented here in the survey, of nearly one million players only a few thousand actually respond, it sadly doesn't even represent 1% of everyone in game. Regardless of all that though, looking purely at the numbers shown even though Balmung has a higher percentage than Gilgamesh, Gilgamesh still has more rolerplayers in general simply because there are more players who voted for it. It's around 140 Balmung to 180 Gilgamesh. Still, you compare the results of that survey to the results found on surveys taken here and you'd find the results to be the opposite, and in several other surveys I've seen on the beta forums the two servers often switch which is in the lead. It's just not possible to view these as accurate in any way. Looking at the numbers, they basically represent less than .01% of the registered playerbase.
  19. Since the response was made in regards to "where are we" I excluded the last three from the list because they can't even be entered, let alone start in them, and were thus not a part of where we could be within the first few hours of the game. As far as everything else goes, well I guess I stand corrected.
  20. I actually totally forgot about the zombie thing, though that doesn't necessarily mean we'll never see anything from Sil'dih again, perhaps we'll encounter it later on as some kind of Necropolis that wants revenge on Ul'dah for what they did, maybe the home of this games version of the Lich boss.
  21. I actually completely agree with this, I believe even if it turns out to be true that the Mamool Ja are the same beastmen from Vana'diel, that that only means they managed to escape to Eorzea somehow through a rift in the Void or something, not that Eorzea = Vana'diel, or that Vana'diel is located somewhere else on Hydaelyn. If that were the case then why are the Miqo'te not Mithra, or the Roegadyn Galka? Even if there are similarities between the two races they are drastically different. Miqo'te last the distinct cat-like nose that the Mithra had, as well as much smaller eyes. The Roegadyn have normal body proportions and lack a tail and animal-like nose, where the Galka had both tail and animal-like nose, and had enormous arms and tiny legs by comparison. Even the Elezen and Elvaan don't completely match, since the Elvaan had much longer arms and legs when compared to the length of their torso, and much small heads in proportion to their bodies. As far as the Goblins and Qiqirn go, I actually think it's stated they are natives of Eorzea, there's no attempt to compare them beyond looks to their Vana'diel counterparts.
  22. Staying on topic regarding lore, it honestly felt like Tanaka did not care about lore. He created a cookie cutter world that was basically just Vana'diel 2.0, and was content to leave it at that. When Yoshida took over it seemed like he was more focused on wrapping up the story they had so they could get to a point where they could focus on ARR, though it can be said that Yoshida expanded the world from what it was into what it became a great deal. With 2.0 we've seen a HUGE amount o lore coming in compared to what we had before, and there seems to be a great deal of dedication towards writing up stuff, in many cases, just for us roleplayers and lore fanatics. I think once the game launches and people play through everything, doing the side quests, leves, and the main scenario you'll find the game world opens up a lot of possibilities and provides a lot more information than we have now. I know just from my experiences with beta that the story seems much more in depth than it did starting out before, and they can only go forward from there.
  23. There is WAAAAAAAY too much to suggest that they are merely from another continent, everything they mention in that writeup is directly from FFXI, and besides Garlemald is directly to the east of Eorzea, to the point that they are actually connected by a narrow land bridge, which means if the Mamool Ja were from another continent Garlemald would be the "Empire to the North" or the "Empire to the West" or maybe even south if there is anything further north than Garlemald. Nope, I'm 99.9% certain (leaving a very tiny amount of room for error) that the empire they are referring to is Aht Urhgan and the other world is Vana'diel. As far as the two worlds existing in the same universe, based on info we've been given ALL worlds in EVERY Final Fantasy game exists in the same universe, or at least multiverse. No, I think if anything it could be best said that Eorzea is a parallel universe of Vana'diel, but even that feels a bit like a stretch. I can't seem to find a source for the information, so it may not actually be true and they may just be a new Beastmen race added from FFXI, but not actually from Vana'diel, and the information provided was just a joke. I'll have to see if I can't find them when phase 4 begins and find out more info.
  24. Where you are: Eorzea (Region), either Aldenard or Vylbrand (Country), and either in Ul'dah, Gridania, or Limsa Lominsa (City) which are in either Thanalan (Ul'dah), La Noscea (Limsa Lominsa), or the Black Shroud/Twelveswood (Gridania). What year it is: 1577, the Seventh Umbral Era, as of the first few hours of the game it will be the 27th Sun of the Fourth Umbral Moon, month of Rhalgr the Destroyer. What is going on: Depending on whether you are a new character or an old character, you are either setting out for the first time as an adventurer in your respective city, or returning to Eorzea from the void after being stuck in limbo for five years. The world narrowly survived the brink of destruction at the hands of the Elder Primal Bahamut, and is still currently in the grips of all out war with the Garlean Empire. I think that about sums up all the questions you needed answered in the first few hours.
  25. I'd say in a perfect environment this would be true, but when you write outside of the lore and you try to add things or make assumptions based on facts that don't exist you end up either playing a game that very few others are playing (meaning your interpretation is drastically different from everyone else), or you're forced to change your idea to conform to new information. As Freelance suggested, creating your own academy to fit these means is far safer than suggesting that another in game faction could fill this role when we don't know enough about them. I think you might be misunderstanding the responses you are being given, no one is trying to tell you that how you RP is wrong, or even attempting to convince you to do things differently. Ultimately what everyone is trying to say, in their own way, is err on the side of caution when coming up with things not covered in the lore, you never know if the material might get added later on. A good example would be having your character be from a place in the world that has very little information offered about it, for the sake of this example we'll use Ishgard. Now let's say you put a lot of backstory into this character, covering all different kinds of facets of their life in the city, how they grew up, what it was like there, what the city looked like, etc. Then let's say that they open up the city and we get a flood of new lore about Ishgard that entirely contradicts everything you wrote about your character, it could potentially make you retcon your character, or even make it entirely obsolete. So in short, as I've said before, it's always safer to simply err on the side of caution.
