That's exceedingly silly. Synae hasn't called anyone here names. What's more, why did you even need to make this post - just to call Synae out because you feel she's being overly aggressive on an internet forum about a topic she's passionate about? She's perfectly capable of wording very strong, coherent arguments, which she's done repeatedly in this thread. There's a difference between being passionate and just being loud.

An interesting question popped up in my mind while I was trying to decide on the race of my eventual character regarding his age, and how exactly he would refer to it given that he's a time jumper. Given there are no real world parallels short of a coma patient waking up I suppose, I'm not sure of a realistic perspective to have regarding this. Say for example your character was 23 during the Battle of Carteneau, and you were thrust forward five years in time. To you, and your body, you are still only 23 years old; but chronologically you are actually 28 years old now. I imagine regardless of your opinion this would take some getting used to, but realistically how would a character react to suddenly being five years older than they actually are? Would they still consider themselves 23, or 28 in the example? I'm likely going to play my character being quite disoriented after the game launches for a while, getting used to the world as it is now and it being five years later, but I'm curious to see the opinions of others in the community.

I don't know if a gambling addiction would be distinctly Hyur or Miqo'te myself, but the mad scientist part definitely feels more Hyur. Yeah, for some reason I have a difficult time imagining a Miqo'te in a lab coat (the Alchemist lvl 50 gear), it seems much easier to imagine the Hyur in one, especially with his crazy hair. Miqo'te in a labcoat you say.... Gerik provides. lolol that's actually kind of funny, didn't expect someone to throw out a pic like that. Still though, not exactly the mental image I have in mind. The Alchemist gear is very mad scientist looking and the whole look of it seems very hard for my to picture a Miqo'te wearing as their typical RP outfit. I'm not saying they couldn't, just that in my mind I have an easier time picturing the Hyur in it than the Miqo'te. So I think I'm definitely leaning more and more towards the Hyur, but I still have this nagging feeling I might regret it no matter what I pick. :?

Oh, and the cataracts thing! I actually tried using the lightest shade of blue available when I first started (after doing some extensive image searches on blindness in the real world) but the problem was it just made it look like he had one light pinkish colored eye, and one light blue colored eye. From what I've found cataracts causes not just the iris to change color and become bluish gray, but it also causes the pupil to become milky and white as well, something that isn't possible using the character creator. Typically in animate or video games, blindness is represented simply by the eye being colorless, so I opted to go with that instead since it gave the best impression of what I was trying to convey.

One of the other things I'm considering is Ashren is supposed to sort of have a gambling addiction, and he's kind of a mad scientist (Thaumaturge + Alchemist) so I'm wondering just how well those things would translate as a Miqo'te vs. a Hyur, for some reason they seem like they might be more something a Hyur would deal with, especially the gambling bit.

I'm pretty sure that's not what I said, but who am I to tell you how to perceive my point? I'll just quote myself and be done with this thread.

Hey woah please respect Japan's culture and understand that transgendered people aren't exactly respected there, so any gender change options should be ignored. I'm sure that many people who have posted in this thread, or who are a part of this community, are more than capable of keeping their shit together, so to speak, but some people seem to think that just because a handful of people make some noise that it will create any sort of lasting impact. When the marriage system launches with hetero marriage only it'll create waves no matter what, but if people expect it (or even accept it, no matter how bad it is) that impact will cause less rage and more rational thought when the time for feedback is actually at hand. If the system launches and the collective LGBT community of FFXIV all rationally band together as best they can to create a singular front then you'll get something done, but if everyone expects things will change just because they want them to or because it makes them angry, then they have these unmerited expectations and a skewed perspective and when the system launches and it's not what they expected, and everyone goes ERMERGERD DEY TERK ER JERBS! and ten thousand threads appear on the lodestone about the same. damn. thing. SE is far less likely to give a rats ass. You know what this actually pisses me off more than SE's bull crap. Thank you sooooooooo much for telling me how to react to this, I absolutely couldn't handle my swirling homo emotions without you here to keep me in perspective. As we all know if a gay ever vents for just five damn minutes about how it sucks that even in fantasy escapism we can't even be equal we're basically stabbing the movement in the back. Please, please give us permission to have one damn place to go 'man this sucks' without some dude coming in and smugly explaining how if we were more rational everything would be ok. Before you get on your high horse you should go take a gander at the beta forums and how there are already about 10 threads (not even over exaggerating) on this very subject and how much those threads are accomplishing. It's pretty much just people saying "rawr this sucks" and then 10+ pages of image macros. All I'm saying is if you actually, you know, want to accomplish anything it's better to come at this in a unified manner where you'll get the most localized support, though clearly from the responses I've seen from many of the people in this thread, even towards people who share in this disdain of the situation, many of you would rather just rage about it than actually make a difference.

SE is far less likely to give a rats ass. @Yini, you're basing your numbers off a single demographic, not the entirety of the US. 2013 Polls A July 10-14 poll by Gallup found support for gay marriage at 54%, a record high, and double the support of 27% Gallup first measured when the question was asked in 1996. A July poll by USA Today found that 55% of Americans supported gay marriage while 40% did not. A May 9 Washington Post-ABC News poll found that 55% of Americans supported gay marriage while 40% did not. A March 20–24 CBS News Poll found that 53% of Americans supported same-sex marriage, 39% opposed it, and 8% were undecided. The same poll also found that 33% of Americans who thought same-sex couples should be allowed to legally marry said they once held the opposite view and had changed their opinion. A March 7–10 Washington Post-ABC News poll found that 58% of Americans support same-sex marriage while 36% opposed. The poll indicated that 52% of GOP-leaning independents under 50 years old supported gay marriage. A March Quinnipiac University poll of voters found 47% supported same-sex marriage and 43% were opposed.

I'm all for this idea!

and just to be clear, I was born and raised in San Francisco, I grew up with friends who had two moms or two dads and was taught to be tolerant from a young age. I have friends that are gay, lesbian, and my former boss was trans, so I'm in no way against same sex anything, in real life or in a video game. I just personally don't see this particular issue as being one worth getting on a soap box for. If you feel strongly about it then by all means, fight for it, but when you do make sure to keep some perspective and understand that this is a multi-national release and we're basically just playing an import of a Japanese game, so ultimately we have to accept what is considered socially acceptable for the Japanese more than anything. It's not fair, but as we should all know by now life is not fair more often than not. I'm only debating this topic to ensure people have perspective and accurate expectations, not because I'm at all against it. Also I'm not sure where you're getting 65%, as of July the total was 55% which was an 11% increase in support for same sex marriage since Obama was elected into office. I highly doubt it jumped another 10% in just a month if it took over a decade to increase by 11%.

You know if I could use THAT hair I totally would. David Bowie in Labyrinth does bare a strong resemblance to Setzer actually... suddenly I'm leaning even more towards the Hyur now.

I think your assumption that Square-Enix will not change its plans no matter what people do is unfounded. if it's made clear that the backlash from releasing the system without same-sex marriage will be immense, I could definitely see them backpedaling. I could even see a partial solution where same-sex marriage is only available on NA and EU servers being implemented if their respective player-bases are particularly vocal. I think you just have an overly optimistic point of view, SE has proven without a shadow of a doubt that they will not change their plans no matter what people do. I can promise you there is more rage and outcry over the combat system then there ever will be over same sex marriage in the game and they haven't budged even a centimeter on that. Their response to adding /tell to dungeons was "it's already there but we don't trust you not to be assholes." Their response to job specific Limit Breaks or less generic Limit Breaks was pretty much Pretty much every major concern that has been brought up on the beta forums, whether in general discussion or in the feedback forums has only ever been responded to with something stating that it was already planned, or was working as intended, or the occasional Nope.jpg from Hvirine.
-
Personally, as a person with a many chin curtain I can't disagree with this statement.
-
You might be able to run the game on your laptop, but I have a feeling large content like FATEs or 8 man dungeons will be hard on your machine, as well as being incredibly laggy. Not to mention the game may actually look worse on your laptop than it does on a PS3, I'm not sure how good the graphics are at standard settings.

Having your thread locked is actually counterproductive to whatever cause you're trying to further because it means that whatever point you were trying to make got lost in pages of flames, trolls, and hate. They don't often lock threads, most of the time threads just disappear into the archives beyond Page 1 and 2 on the forums (because let's be honest, no one ever goes back further than Page 2 at most when searching a forum, especially the beta forums). So if your thread garnered enough attention to get locked, it's because it was reported too many times and a mod needed to step in and shut things down, and most likely no one read your post before that happened, or after. Any feedback on the marriage system before it's actually in the game will at most only merit some vague as hell response from a dev that ends in something like "please be patient."
-
I'm trying to find the actual quote, I thought it was in the last live letter but I only see one mention of the marriage system so I guess not. I'm pretty sure he says something like "we'll look into it after it has been implemented" or something along those lines regarding same sex marriage, so I'm merely trying to create realistic expectations not to expect anything to change from now until it is released. They seem pretty set on releasing the system "as is" and making any changes later on if the community is vocal enough about it. From my experience on the beta forums however, calm and articulated threads are far more likely to get a dev response while rage filled shouting threads usually get ignored or locked.

-8/10: Added the "Organization" tab to the page that includes all of the information about our FC structure as well as ranks within the FC. This information is primarily IC and is meant only for RP purposes and determining different types of events to run and activities to do.

I'm actually surprised this thread has gotten so much feedback, and I'm incredibly appreciative of all the votes and comments everyone has given. It's been pretty instrumental so far in helping me decide which one I want to use, though I'm still undecided. I'm definitely leaning a bit more towards the Hyur at the moment but my issue is that, as mentioned the Hyur looks a bit more world weary and battle hardened while the Hyur just has the scarred up look I was going for. Ultimately I may have to wait until I can actually get into the real character creator where I can see both appearances in the Black Mage AF before I make my final decision.
-
To my knowledge SE is not making anyone wait. They stated that the marriage system will be implemented with opposite sex marriage only, so we know for certain that when it is added that is how it's going to be. Yoshida said that after it is added they would consider feedback and what not from the players and might add in same sex marriage at a later time. So in short, same sex marriage will be the only option when the system is added into the game. Any feedback given before then will most likely fall on deaf ears since they've got other things lined up before then.

So I find myself leaning a tiny bit more towards the Hyur because he really does seem to stand out a bit more as a unique looking character. Sadly this has a lot to do with the fact that Hyur have way more customization options than the Miqo'te do. For one they have a lot more face choices than the Miqo'te do, and each category (jaw, eyes, nose, etc) seems to vary a great deal more in appearance than the options for the Miqo'te, meaning that each Miqo'te face will only barely deviate from each other no matter how to customize it, while the Hyur faces tend to change quite a bit. Still I do love my Miqo'te build, he has a very rough and gritty appearance that is not common for most of the Miqo'te I have seen, something that could definitely make him stand out a bit more. In either case I took a few more screenshots I'd like to share for any who is willing to give me some more input to help decide which of these two I'll end up using at launch.

So... how does introducing a marriage system in a video game that doesn't include same sex marriage fit into this description? Forgive my bluntness, I cannot believe that an honest and intelligent person would need this to be explained to them. Please think this over and ask again if you're unable to work it out for yourself. I'm sorry, I just don't see how them implementing a system into the game that most likely will not offer any benefit and will probably only be used by a fraction of the player base as being irrationally prejudicial or lumping people into an arbitrary category. The only different between civil unions and marriage are primarily legal BS. No one in Eorzea is going to tell you that you can't be put on your partners insurance because you didn't use the official marriage system.
-
So... how does introducing a marriage system in a video game that doesn't include same sex marriage fit into this description? For all we know all the marriage system does is give you a quest that ends in some kind of cutscene or something and absolutely nothing else. Does not getting a cutscene make your fake video game relationshio somehow more fake? Does it make my fake in game relationship less fake because I got a cutscene?
-
If this is honestly enough to make you quit the game, allow me to show you where the door can be found. Do you act this way every time you don't get your way in a video game? I apologize that this is a bit of an extreme post, but seriously this is so much unnecessary drama over such a small feature in the game.

I see you're profile says you're on Gilgamesh, you're aware we're a Balmung FC? I just want to make sure before proceeding with your application. Oh whoops meant to change that! My main character is going to be on Balmung with my alt on Gilgamesh Kaln commented on your application, if you could make the necessary changes I'll go ahead and take another look at it. Thank you for the heads up! I answered appropriately. Sorry about that haha somehow didn't see the big header that said "IC QUESTIONS" No worries, everything is all cleared up. Welcome to the Blades!
