I'll make it easy and just post the link to my steam profile if anyone wants to add me. I mostly just play Borderlands 2 on it. http://steamcommunity.com/id/jedahdemon

I didn't really progress very far during 1.0, but I still wanted to play my character as a Warrior of Light, though I had no plans on him like... going around advertising it either. More like "I was at the Battle of Carteneau... but I don't really want to talk about it." sort of thing. In regards to them being rare though? Warriors of Light weren't really a chosen few, there was an entire army of them theoretically. Warriors of Light are just those who fought against the VIIth Legion and vanished five years ago, it's just a name people gave them because they could only remember them as a glowing silhouette (or so I read). If they were intended to be rare, the story would make your character out to be more of a mary sue instead of making it seem like you are one in a few hundred (or thousand) people who disappeared from that battle. I think they said that each server can have up to 5,000 characters online at once? That's not even just created, but only online. So let's say of those 5,000 players online only 10% of them were from 1.0, that's 500 characters. Lets them say that only 75% of them are playing their characters as if they were Warriors of Light, that's an estimate of 375 Warriors of Light online at any given time.... of course this is all just theoretical math with no real basis, I'm just point out that it should be assumed they aren't really THAT rare.

This is completely true, but what I mean to say is that the concept of a fallen hero turned sinister villain has become increasingly popular in recent years within video games and movies. I'm not even talking about the amount of people who RP this type of concept, because in my opinion the only thing roleplayed more than a fallen hero is a brooding anti-hero. No, what I'm referring to is that in the past few years we've seen a sudden spike in these type of characters in numerous fantasy settings, especially in games, where a character starts out either as the protagonist, or an ally to the protagonist, and somewhere along the journey he turns bad and ends up the antagonist. Hell, I could even point you to the psuedo-super hero movie/comic Kick Ass that brazenly did this as perhaps the most recent example I can think of, or maybe even the Lizard Man in the Amazing Spider-Man movie to a lesser extent. It's just the type of villain I see trending more than others in video games and such. With that being said, I actually see the opposite being more used, if for no other reason than because people want to be Cecil clones. That being Dark Knights turning Paladins.

Several years ago this kind of story would have been cool, but over the years it's been done ad nauseum. The idea of the great hero falling from grace existed long before Lord Soth (though he was perhaps one of the most well known in his time), then Arthas from Warcraft 3 made it popular again, and eventually we saw it done again and again and again in World of Warcraft when they added the Death Knights. You could even say that it was also made popular in a way by Star Wars with the prequels, seeing Anakin Skywalker rise and then fall to become Darth Vader. I'm not saying it's a terrible idea, just that sadly it's like a dead horse roleplay concept in my book.

A question about traits and bonus points
Havoc Snow replied to Vanschiver's topic in FFXIV Discussion
Traits only effect the class they are gained on, unlike weapon skills, abilities, and spells, you can't transfer them between classes. -
Yeah, sure I'll jump on board with this thread. I don't really have a good picture of myself online though, so this is the best I can muster. Was my facebook photo from the end of 2012 when me and some friends threw a party to welcome the end of the world/zombie apocalypse.

Well some were saying that the beta key emails that went out last weekend were listing the beta ending on July 14th, so there very well may be another weekend left for us, but I don't think it'll be an extended test. This weekend was supposed to be an extended test to stress test the duty finder but apparently it wasn't required, that was the entire reason they left the end date open.
-
Well that seems like the case now, since it seems likely that Phase 4 will even start as early as this month but according to the Phase 3 outline they posted at the start of the phase the Final Test was supposed to be "several days" which implied it would be a lot longer than the standard two day test. Either way I'm actually more excited about this than not, I've already done pretty much everything possible in the game for the moment, so I'm looking forward to seeing what will change in Phase 4 and what additions we'll see.
-
So it would appear that Test 4 will not be an extended play period as was suggested by the beta schedule, as the end date has been posted on the forums as ending on the usual day and time as all the previous tests. At least this means (hopefully) that we'll be getting into Phase 4 even sooner than expected.
-
Oooh yeah, that's a bit different! You can actually delete characters currently by right clicking on the character name and then selecting delete.
-
They're wiping all character data at the end of this test, so everyone will be starting fresh in phase 4.

Ah-ha! This is where I read some of the stuff, I just totally forgot that part of the website was even there. But yeah, they have WAAAAAY more information than that in the duty finder now, definitely worth a look. For example in that intro to Haukke Manor it just talks about how vain she was and how she paid a terrible price to reclaim her beauty, but in the dungeon finder it actually goes as far as stating that she bathed in the blood of her virgin servants to try and preserve her looks (and that was BEFORE the Calamity disfigured her). There's also a bit more information on the other dungeons, like the Cult in Tam-Tara, or Thousand Maws being named after a legendary creature (and I just noticed Thousand Maws isn't even on that page). There's not a lot there, just a few paragraphs at most, but still it's more lore than we had before!
-
So with the addition of the Duty Finder this weekend I've noticed there is quite a bit of lore on the dungeons. Were these blurbs always available somewhere or is this all new lore getting added in finally? I remember reading SOMEWHERE about the story behind Haukke Manor, though I wasn't aware Lady Amandine was supposed to be Elizabeth Bathory essentially. Either way, for anyone who was a little in the dark about the dungeon lore (like I was), it's finally easily available in the Duty Finder... YAY!

There aren't any half breeds (to my knowledge) I believe because the mechanics don't allow it, though I don't see why that should stop you from roleplaying as one regardless! I plan to have Ashren be of mixed parentage, but mainly because the society of the Keepers suits my ideas more than the Seepers, but the customization options for the Seekers (skintone primarily, but also the slitted eyes) fits his appearance more. So I planned to have his father be a Seeker and his mother a Keeper, though he was raised by his mother and never met his father.

Turn your camera away if you see someone wearing it? This sort of thing really doesn't seem like that big a deal to me, and lets face it. SE could use all the advertising they could get. It wasn't that long ago that the internet was flooded with articles about how they were facing bankruptcy if things continued to trend the way they were with their games. After he flop of a game that FFXIV 1.0 was, and the horrible sales that the initial release of FFXIII got in the western market, as well as the downward spiral KH was going with all the rehashed and sideplot games that were coming out they are hurting REALLY bad to get people to buy their stuff, so a little cross-franchise advertising isn't a bad thing. Afterall, if FFXIII sells good, then SE has more money to throw around towards further development for FFXIV, or even FFXV if you're waiting for that. So in short, I think this kind of thing doesn't really hurt anymore. No more than buster sword limit breaks, the return of old FF game villains (Xande and Cloud of Darkness), or even Atomos/Cavernous Maw being taken right out of FFXI and put into the game. There is SO MUCH fanservice in this game already, anyone who complains about any single thing can be seen as just nit picking really. Edit: Also another thing to keep in mind, every single race in this game came from another game, and most of the monsters while recurring monsters from all FF, are visually direct ports from FFXI. One could say that FFXIV in its entirety is from another game, the only thing unique about it is Hydaelyn.

Rping on Gilgamesh? Please give this a read
Havoc Snow replied to Gideon Aryeh's topic in RP Discussion
Pretty sure the limit is 20 characters, similar to character names. My LS in beta is 18 characters so I know it's at least that long. -
I would have rather played an Elezen to be honest, having played an Elvaan my entire time in FFXI, but something about them bugs me. Even in FFXI they had over exaggerated proportions, but it seems even worse in FFXIV, and this combined with the "dainty" way they move and fight, I understand they are supposed to be refined and what not but in FFXI the Elvaan were refined as well but they still looked badass in a fight. The Male Miqo'te seem to have taken the spot as the "alpha" race/gender as far as animations go, I actually enjoy watching my character run around, doing emotes, etc. Plus, I always loved Zidane and the animations, racial clothing, and body proportions kind of remind me of him... only a cat instead of a monkey.

In addition to receiving it from a quest, it was also stated that DoH will be able to craft parts for it to customize the way it looks. What I'd like to see is being able to actually fight in it, instead of summoning the Chocobo Companion you could use an item that let you mount it and use different attacks and stuff based on the customization. Doubt it'd happen, but would still be cool to ride into battle on that thing firing off the big blasts like we see in the End of an Era video.

After playing around a bit on my 1.0 character I've been given the impression that this doesn't really matter since no one remembers who they were, which means from a lore standpoint no one really remembers what happened at the Battle of Carteneau let alone who fought in it. In other words, the Warriors of Light are just legends, even to the Warriors of Light.
-
One thing to keep in mind is that this probably won't be sticking around for long either, being that it is most definitely just a promotion for FFXIII-LR, it'll probably last until the game launches (considering we probably won't even see this stuff added to the game until closer to next year when the game is supposed to be released) and then it'll be taken out. This kind of thing makes me think more that it's a short term promotional event, so you can do it or ignore it and in a month or so it'll be gone from the game forever, pretty much like the Goobbue Mounts.

I just saw this on the homepage and the first thing I noticed was the Titan Egi, so excited for Summoner!

One thing I feel should be mentioned of course is that we as Roleplayers are somewhat of a minority in the game. I feel that typically there are three groups of people who play MMOs. People who play it just to play it, like any other game, they don't care about the story as much as they care about enjoying the game as a whole. This is, in my experience, the vast majority of players in MMOs; the quest text skippers, hardcore raiders, and character grinders who are focused entirely on endgame and don't really pay much attention to anything before that. Next you have non-roleplayers who do still enjoy the storyline and play the game because of it. They read the quests, they watch the cutscenes, and they immerse themselves into the world. These are the second most common players in games. Lastly you have us, not unlike the last type we enjoy the storyline, we immerse ourselves in the world, and we enjoy the lore. However unlike the last type we live by that lore, we try to make ourselves a part of it, to exist inside of it in some way and so because of that we feel somewhat entitled that the lore will remain consistent. As far as fanservice and cameos go, type 1 won't care at all about it, if anything they'll love it, because to them this is just a game that now has stuff from another game they liked in it. Type 2 may have mixed opinions, on one hand they'll enjoy the fanservice, and many probably won't even care if it breaks lore to add it, but some may feel their immersion is being tampered with, ultimately though most of type 2 will be in the same boat as type 1. Lastly, type 3 (RPers) will feel as if anything that alters or betrays the lore is a complete and utter outrage (or at least many of us will) and will flame and rage against it vehemently. Bare in mind this is just a broad generalization, and not everyone fits into these three categories. Some people exist in their own category, or are a mix of them (like myself, I'm more of a Type 1+3 mix). But the key point is that, type 3 are a major minority in the game, and if they did everything to just appeal to us then they'd be losing money. The best business strategy for SE is to appeal to type 1, and do a little to appeal to Type 2 and 3 in the process. It sucks, but that's the sad reality.

So to be clear, does that mean that the existence of Gilgamesh, Xande, and the Cloud of Darkness, who are all supposedly interdimensionally entering Eorzea as well, bother you too? As a side note, I may be in the minority here but would anyone else rather have got Caius' outfit instead of Snow's for the male armor?
-
Says who? Where is it written that a cameo has to go by some preset criteria that can't involve interdimensional travel? Perhaps it doesn't suit your tastes that they chose to have the REAL Lightning cameo into the game, rather than just a Hyur with her likeness appearing, but that doesn't make it any less of a cameo. Hell, even Yoshi-P exists in the game in the form of the Wandering Minstrel. Edit: Also, maybe Lightning just uses the Duty Finder to join Eorzea?

I actually don't even completely understand WHY people disliked it. I mean, it had everything that should have made a good game. Interesting revisions of old monsters, gunblades, cute girls, a token black guy, TRANSFORMERS, a baby chocobo, the Soul Calibur, amazing visuals, a decent story, tons of back story and information about the world right in the game. The only thing I couldn't stand about it was Hope, god that kid annoyed me. I never played FFXIII-2 unfortunately, was too broke when it came out and never bothered to go back and get it when I had the money, though now I kind of want to play it with all this talk about FFXIII. Also taken from the Anti-Lightning thread on the beta forums. just to illustrate that Lighting wasn't the first, and won't be the last cameo we see.
