That was trade between Ul'dah and Garlemald though, like the proper Garlemald country, which is located pretty much right on the other side of Ala Mhigo. The fact that we are only just now starting to see a tiny bit of asian culture appear in the world, and even last years Heavensturn event where people had never heard of a horse before, shows that there has been almost no interaction between Eorzea and Othard in the past.
-
The problem with this assumption is that Othard has been under complete Garlean rule for I think they say 50 years now? Any Au Ra that would have traveled to Eorzea would have been nearly a half century ago because it's very easy to believe Garlemald controls their borders and who can and can't like with incredible prejudice. Even then, before Garlemald conquered the entire east they would not have had much reason to leave their homeland unless it was by mass exodus like all the other races that came to Eorzea. I'm pretty certain Yugiri is the first Au Ra to ever set foot on Eorzean shores, there aren't going to be any secret pockets of Au Ra that appear all the sudden, any Au Ra NPCs we meet will be as brand new to Eorzea as our characters are. That is my opinion anyways. As for the quests taking place before Heavensward, I don't think there will be any change to the dialog, they won't acknowledge you as any new and strange race they have never seen before, you'll just be an adventurer like any other.

That much actually makes sense though, because he doesn't even reveal he knows how to fight like a rogue until much later in the story and you don't see him fight again (that I can recall) after the Rogue reveal. If they retconned him to use two daggers from the start of the story and then you get to the Leviathan part of the MSQ and he whips out a second dagger like it's a big surprise everyone would be confused. In 1.0, Thancred and the other Scions fought Gaius and ol' Thanny pulled out a bunch of Throwing Daggers. So basically he goes rogue when the going gets tough. At least, that's my speculation. After that mission, everyone in my party thought there was going to be a dagger class. But then the game got scrapped and years later, we got what we wanted. In all fairness though, in 1.0 most of the Circle of Knowing could do things that the player couldn't, like Y'shtola being able to create a giant dome version of Protect or Papalymo casting Gravity to suck in bullets and crush them. Urianger even used to have the old Arcanist staff from its original concept as a debuff/dot/trapper class before it became a pet class.

Garlean characters that have appeared have a distinct naming convention quite different from those in Eorzea. They consist of a given name, a middle name denoting rank, and a surname taken from their family. The ranks observed so far: Zos: Emperor Yae: High Legatus Van: Legatus Tol: Tribunus (higher ranking) Sas: Tribunus (lower ranking) Nan: Minister of Industry It is suggested that citizens of conquered nations may adopt this nomenclature, as demonstrated by Rhitahtyn sas Arvina (a Roegadyn not of Garlean birth).

But it's not really a country though, they call it a Garlean Province which is only part of a country. It could very well be a country annexed by the Garlean Empire (which is quite large). That's a good point, former country annexed into Garlean province.

The village is in Doma, but the village isn't Doma. You can double-check the text here. Hmm, I guess I was mistaken on this one. Still, it's a bit strange that they would completely change the naming conventions for them. We don't call people from Limsa Lominsa La Nosceans, nor do we call people from Ul'dah Thanalanians, so why would they be called Domans if it's the name of their region, when every other nationality is named after their ruling city. Until we know more I still stand by my theory that Doma is the name of the area and the name of the capital at best, similar to Wutai.
-
This is actually incorrect, the very first quest in the Ninja storyline when you first meet Tsubame and Oboro they tell you that they have come to Eorzea from Doma on a mission while explaining to you who they are and who Karasu is and why they are hunting him. There is also the fact that they clearly come from the same place as Yugiri because they say something like "you must be the Rogues Lady Yugiri spoke of." The point I am trying to make is that it is very likely that Doma is to them what Gridania or Ul'dah is to Eorzea, even if it is a nation it is still likely based around the Doma Village. It's like how we call people from Gridania, Gridanians... not Black Shroudians.
-
Gridania, Limsa, Ul'dah, and Ishgard are all also referred to as nations, but are also only cities, which was why I said that Doma was likely the equivalent of a city-state. To borrow from another game, in FFVII Wutai Village is just a village, but also the capital of all of Wutai, and I may be wrong but I got the feeling that Doma was very Wutai like... especially since they were introduced in the same patch as Leviathan. from the main website for Through the Maelstrom: It is most definately a Nation, and as such could be a city state or a country. Which I agreed with you could indeed be the case. Right, I'm definitely not in disagreement here that Doma IS a nation, just that it is also a village. I think perhaps I may be misunderstanding the original meaning of "country" though that allgivenover was meaning, to me it seemed to be implying that it was the same thing as calling all of Thanalan, Ul'dah.

It's not a country though, and it's never called a country or even implied as such. It may be a city-state (or something similar to it) but it is constantly referred to as a village, especially if you level a ninja where they repeatedly talk about "the people from the village."
-
I think the reason people are getting hung up on the verbiage is because your idea is based on a caste system and your own backing for the idea is that you believed Yugiri was some sort of nobility in her society. In the english VO they also call her Lady Yugiri, but I don't think it's intended in the same sense as Lord and Lady, she is essentially the representative of the Doman refugees as you sort of stated, so I think because of that they treat her with respect as if she were a dignitary. From what we know so far about Doma though, it's only a village... not a city or a country, though I suppose that could still put it on par with say Gridania.
-
Out of curiosity, what makes you think Yugiri is royalty? I just got the impression she was a really skilled Ninja, not anyone of any major importance.
-
That's exactly the point, the current MSQ will take place in the past (similar to how 1.0 takes place five years before 2.0 starts), which is why we're discussing how it will work for the Au Ra when they arrive after the events of 2.X.
-
Don't forget that in the lore of the MSQ, all adventurers come from a far away land, as far as the game is concerned none of us are from Eorzea.
-
I think the most we can hope for honestly would just be a revision to the opening cutscene. Perhaps instead of a random carriage/boat ride into town there will be something more specific to how your Au Ra arrived in Eorzea, similar to how legacy characters got the crazy teleportation cutscene from the past.

Question about meeting new people and walk-up RP
Havoc Snow replied to Havoc Snow's topic in RP Discussion
Hmm, well Ashren runs a shop called Iron Coeurl Smithing out of Limsa selling salvage and refurbishing or repurposing "claimed" Magiteck from Garlemald. So I guess that's an avenue in a way. -
Question about meeting new people and walk-up RP
Havoc Snow replied to Havoc Snow's topic in RP Discussion
I'm not necessarily mean or anything, or at least not intentionally. I just sort of lack empathy I suppose when it comes to saying things that could potentially hurt peoples feelings. In most cases a person will think something and before saying it their brain tells them that is probably a bad thing to say, and online people will type something and likewise think it's a bad thing to say. For me that thought seldom crosses my mind. I've found in life that everyone likes to play mind games even in small ways, like "does this dress make me look fat?" is a great example of this sort of thing, it's an obvious fish for a compliment, but in my mind the thought that you didn't want an honest answer never crosses my mind and if the answer was yes, that's the answer you get. In short I don't spare peoples feelings. Likewise I'm also rather opinionated on a lot of things, and unless a person who opposes my opinion is capable of proving my opinion wrong I won't change my mind on it. That seems like it should be common sense, but you'd be surprised how often I get called stubborn or pig-headed for refusing to budge on a subject without proper evidence I should. I make a good first impression in most cases, I have a good sense of humor, I'm easy to talk to, and those who do consider me a friend often rely on me at times when they need someone to talk to, but the problem is I am brutally honest with people and over time I've found a lot of people can't take it. It makes me come across as an asshole I guess, and so it creates anxieties with trying to meet new people. It also doesn't help I think that my character is a bit salty and hard to approach, usually drunk or drinking, and when he's not he probably working on some new idea of his to pass the time. He's a be crude and brash, even a tad lecherous, the mostly just a lone wolf war vet from the Calamity. -
Question about meeting new people and walk-up RP
Havoc Snow replied to Havoc Snow's topic in RP Discussion
If you don't want to look at them at all, you can always type It will bring up the same information without the need to target. This is incredibly handy, wonder if I can make a macro to ninja examine people. Edit: Yay it works! /c "" and you can target someone, hit the macro then untarget them really fast. -
Question about meeting new people and walk-up RP
Havoc Snow replied to Havoc Snow's topic in RP Discussion
I spend a lot of time just sort of sitting and reading RP, though it never feels... organic (?) to just walk up and try to join in, or maybe I just feel like it would be rude and even asking sometimes feels like an imposition. I also kinda feel weird examining people sometimes cause it makes me feel like a creeper. -
Question about meeting new people and walk-up RP
Havoc Snow replied to Havoc Snow's topic in RP Discussion
That I'm afraid I can't really help, it's just how I am. I lack a filter between my brain and my mouth, so what I think is what I say regardless of social taboos or etiquette. Trust me, if I could change it I would. -
So I'll just start this by saying that, admittedly, I have always sucked when it came to deal with new people. I have something of an abrasive and stubborn demeanor that can take a bit of getting used to. Because of this I deal with a bit of anxiety when it comes with meeting new people, so I've primarily stuck with RPing in a very small group of people only on occasion. This has worked out for me for the most part because it means there's never any conflict in story or anything like that. Lately however, especially with the approach of the new expansion, I've found myself wanting to branch out, meet new people and become a bit more involved in the RP community as a whole. I volunteered to work as a priest at the Starlight Ball and met a few folks, which was fun but sadly it wasn't lasting. I tend to wander around a lot ICly, just walking between the cities, hanging out in the adventurer's guilds, and just sort of people watching but never really sure how to get myself involved. That brings us to the topic of this thread, I'm seeking advice on how to meet new people, how to get involved in walk ups, or attract them. I guess that's pretty much it, any advice is welcome.

No one can really answer that for you, the people who play on Gilgamesh will obviously say Gilgamesh is better, and the people who play on Balmung will obviously say that Balmung is better. Anyone who plays on both will just give you a non-answer, like "both have their merits and flaws" or something like that. It's up to you to decide whether it's worth the wait for the server to open, or to just move on to Gilgamesh.

Expansion Announced: Heavensward, releasing Spring 2015
Havoc Snow replied to Zyrusticae's topic in FFXIV News
If you notice in your traits every class gets a bonus to a particular stat every few levels, for example Archer and Rogue get DEX, Gladiator and Marauder get VIT, Pugilist and Lancer get STR, etc. Chances are they would just dump the thirty points into these Traits, or at the very least the stats these Traits increase.
