  1. Both cities wanted power, the difference was that one wanted wealth and the other wanted knowledge.
  2. So one connection I know that exists is the name Doma coming from Doma Castle in FFVI. I wonder if RT is eventually going to some how turn into Doma Castle with how it's building up over time and the Doman influence is starting to take more root. Also the fact that in FFVI Doma Castle opposed the Gestahlian Empire and was wiped out in response.
  3. Yeah I found it after a bit of skipping, so yeah she really doesn't say it has anything to do with her being a Ninja or her race. She just basically says people are afraid of what is unfamiliar so she hid her appearance to not cause any disturbances. Edit: To quote it exactly for those who can't view youtube atm. Alphinaud: Lady Yugiri, forgive me for observing, but... your choice of attire seems like to evoke feelings of mistrust. Yugiri: Men are wont to fear the unfamiliar. We know this from experience. We seek only to spare the people of Ul'dah unnecessary disquiet. Alphinaud: I shall defer to your experience then. Yugiri: I thank you for your understanding.
  4. The video is almost 2 hours long, do you remember where in it she talks about the way she dresses?
  5. Ugh, please excuse my stupidity. Kamome was right about the non-asian surname I was just confusing the word for given name. So yes, Doman appear to have a Japanese-style forename and some type of title as their surname.
  6. Nah you read it fine, I had to make sure of it myself. He said surname, but I think what he meant to say was last name. From what I can see the naming conventions for Doman characters seems to be a Japanese style surname, and then a sort of honorific type last name, like the examples listed above. These my be something more like a title than an actual last name, such as calling Tsubame and Oboro the Sun and Moon to one another.
  7. I think he might have meant last name, not surname. Like Yugiri Mistwalker, Oboro Moonrise, Karasu Redbeak.
  8. This may not merely be a depature from Doman language, and just simply how the Doman naming conventions have always been. While Doma is quite obviously based on Japan, it is not actually Japan so they are free to deviate from actual Japanese historical or cultural things such as naming.
  9. Well... considering Minfilia's father's name is Warburton and we see him (albeit briefly) in 1.0 before his death, I'mma go ahead and nip this theory in the bud. But I will take your money? 1 million gil plz. WHAT HAPPENS IN GOLD SAUCER STAYS IN GOLD SAUCER It's not very likely, but it's still a possibility actually. Warburton gets crushed by the rampaging Goobbue in 1.0 when he shoves her out of the way, then they try to resurrect him using Necromancy. Who is to say that didn't somehow cause some sort of weird... iunno, for lack of a better term "Heartless/Nobody" which spawned Elidibus?
  10. She dresses that way for two reasons. One being an entirely game related design flaw, they introduced her long before they had a model to represent her, so they just used a Miqo'te female and slapped on a custom made set of gear and scaly tail to show she wasn't a Hyur. She more or less states the reason she dresses like that though is because it's customary for Ninjas, it has nothing to do with her race as some people here seem to believe... she has a freaking scaled tail and horns protruding through her hood, she isn't fooling anyone I don't care how Ninja she is. That's not exactly it, either. She outright tells you she has to hide her appearance because (something akin to) "My kind aren't known here and I don't want to cause any undue distractions or problems." Au Ra aren't currently in Eorzea, and she knows it, so she's trying to not make headline news when a new species of Beastman arrives. I don't think she would ever be mistaken for a Beastmen, I don't even think she knew what a Beastmen was until she got here since that is a Garlean term most people just picked up. The reasoning behind it is more just what you first said, not wanting to make headline news. She's a Ninja, and her role in the story is to be a spy and a saboteur. It would be hard to fill those roles if everyone and their mother was talking about a Dragon lady walking around.

Oh. That makes more sense now... Hm, I wonder how common Au Ra are in Doma... Isn't Dravania geographically on the other side of Ishgard, pretty far west? Dravania is the Northern most point of Aldenard, taking up the entire north western section of the map. Ishgard I believe sits right at the very edge of their borders. As far as Au Ra go, we won't know at least until March, though very well may not be until the expansion comes, or they at least start dropping all the lore details for it. The only thing they have said so far as that Au Ra come from Othard, the continent where Doma is located. We know they will lively be split into two clans (the two sets of models they showed thus far) so maybe only one of the Clans will be from Doma and the other another part of Othard. One thing I do remember is that Eozea is the smallest of the three continents, and as we see with the residents of Eorzea they don't live in just one place, all of the races are spread out pretty heavily all over the place. With that in mind it's also very likely that since they said they come from Othard, and not just Doma specifically it's more likely that the Au Ra are heavily spread out across the continent.

  13. While it's realistic of course that other countries (and especially other continents) would speak another language, I think the only actual instance we see where another language is used is with Dragons who have their own words for certain things. The fact that not only the Player Character, but every other NPC in the game can speak with the Domans without any sort of language barrier either means that the Domans were exceptionally quick at picking up new languages, or everyone in the world just speaks Common, perhaps with various different dialects. The only case where it is clearly stated that they speak another language, or are at least only able to be understood by people with the Echo are the Beast Tribes, but even that seems to have gone away completely in 2.0 as seen by the Beast Tribe dailies where regular people are capable of speaking with the Beastmen without the need for having the Echo.
  14. Sure I'll go ahead and toss my hat into the ring, feel free to add me: arachnidemon.
  15. From left to right: NIN, DRG, Healers, ???, ???, MNK, Tanks Hard to tell whether the Miqo'te or the Highlander is the BRD. My personal opinion about these gear is that they seem to be a bit too similar to 2.4 gears and seem extremely lazy. NIN/MNK above looks same and if Roe's outfit is BRD or DRG... that's a bit of disappointing too. They just seem color changed and nothing really different. Likewise for the casters in the middle. I hope crafting gears will make up the designs at least. (and is that a bucket helmet for the tank?) I don't think it's so much as a lazy similarity than it is just them sticking to a job aesthetic. In fact, it's pretty sweet that they let us get the gear from those Qarn guys, in addition to giving us those sweet MNK/DRG/NIN sets. For dungeon gear it looks great! I'm so used to getting stupid looking clown-suits from dungeons in other games, I think this is a treasure. It fits Eorzea well, and the characters look snazzy. I can't wait to collect my sets. Giving us the Qarn gear is sweet, but I'm in agreement with Aldotsk that creating one set of models for a single gear set and then simply recoloring that set to come up with two more (and recoloring old headgear pieces to include in the new sets to make them "different") is the definition of lazy. Job aesthetic? What job aesthetic? All three feature the same unbuttoned/unfastened shirt, same gloves, same pants, same boots. There's nothing in there that screams "MONK!" or "DRAGOON!" or "NINJA!" to me. The only reason we even have reasonable guesses as to which is which is because the headgear differs (eyepatches are the usual headgear for monks in XIV, masks for dragoons). They're cutting corners so that their costs in pumping out new assets don't climb higher than they can afford. No need to be an apologist about it. It's just the way it is. Are people honestly still surprised by this? I mean... seriously? This has been what SE has done for literally every single dungeon since at least the first Coil dungeon. In Binding Coil of Bahamut we had Monk, Dragoon, and Bard all sharing the same gear, while casters and healers had their own gear, and tank had their own gear. That's three sets of unique assets for the first raid in the game. Then we had 2.1 which to my recollection didn't add any new armor sets to the three HM dungeons, but we got Labyrinth of the Ancients which had Dragoon and Bard sets, Caster and Healer sets, Monk set, and Tank set, for a total of four unique assets. 2.2 came out and we got SCoB plus a new set of dungeon gear. From SCoB we had the Caster and Bard sets, Monk and Dragoon sets, Healer set, and Tank set, for a total of four unique assets. From the dungeons we had Monk and Dragoon sets, Caster and Healer sets, Bard set, and Tank set, again for a total of four unique assets. 2.3 came out and we got yet another set of dungeon armor, plus the release of Syrcus Tower with its new armor sets. For ST we had Monk and Dragoon sets, Caster and Healer sets, Bard set, and Tank set for a total of four unique assets. For the new dungeon armor we got Monk and Bard sets, Caster and Healer sets, Dragoon set, and Tank set for a total of four unique assets. 2.4 came out and we got a new set of gear from FCoB, but no new dungeon armor. This is the first time they have done more than four since 2.1, with Monk and Ninja sets, Caster and Healer sets, Bard set, Dragoon set, and Tank set for a total of five unique assets. 2.5 it would seem as though they are for the most part trying to continue the five assets trend with WoD as it has five different sets of armor with Ninja and Monk, Caster and Healer, Dragoon, Bard, and Tank sets. The dungeon gear however fits into the older four asset rule with Monk, Ninja, and Dragoon sets, Bard set, Caster and Healer sets, and Tank set. Is it lazy? Maybe (though I personally don't think so), but that would mean they have been lazy since the release of the game, and at least they have been consistent in that fact.
  16. Preliminary patch notes are up on the lodestone. This is easily the best part in them.
  17. I managed to get two alts made, just not the third.
  18. Aaaand it's closed. Sadness, was trying to make an Elezen alt real quick but missed the window.
  19. Prior to the holidays it wasn't uncommon for Balmung to be open around this time of day, so maybe things are finally starting to return to some semblance of normalcy.
  20. I don't believe it's going to be any different on another server. As far as I know, FFXIV doesn't have data centers in Europe. Even the European servers are physically located within the US. Pretty much this, every server in the US and EU are located out of Montreal, CA so you'll experience the same latency no matter what server you roll on.
  21. That was trade between Ul'dah and Garlemald though, like the proper Garlemald country, which is located pretty much right on the other side of Ala Mhigo. The fact that we are only just now starting to see a tiny bit of asian culture appear in the world, and even last years Heavensturn event where people had never heard of a horse before, shows that there has been almost no interaction between Eorzea and Othard in the past. Never seen anything which indicates that it was the country, rather than the empire, that was involved with trade, and the fact that Kabuto and travelers from the East have been involved in all the Heavensturns events since 1.0, I would think that there was still people traveling too and from, again, I doubt the Empire would forbid someone traveling to Eorzea based solely on their race. The people from the Heavensturn events are hardly a basis to use to assume that there are Au Ra that have secretly been living among us since 1.0. I just think people are hearing hooves and thinking its Zebras.
  22. I think because we know so little still about Doma beyond that it's very heavily influenced/inspired by Japanese culture, some folks are still apprehensive about playing a Doman (compared to say an Ishgardian or an Garlean), so there may not be as much demand for a full on FC currently. Perhaps once Heavensward comes out, if we get more info on Doman history and lore more people will have an interest in something like this.
