  1. I treat Eorzean time like an estranged uncle. It's good to know he's there, I guess, but he doesn't have a great deal of influence on what I do or how I RP. Weather is like his girlfriend that he's lived with off and on for the last eight years and you're not sure if they're going to get married, have kids, or just keep breaking up and getting back together until the end of time. She's just so sporadic that you can't actually count on her to make any kind of impact. And if you place too much stock in her then all she'll really do is just mess things up by being consistently inconsistent. Kind of like living in Missouri. In game sun/moon cycles and weather patterns are just there to give the game variety and flavor. Salt and pepper aren't the meal, they're just used to enhance it. All I really worry about is making sure that time makes sense for those I'm RPing with. Making sure that everyone is consistent in the session so that the RP makes sense is the most important thing to me. +1 for Eorzean Standard Time. That's hilarious. Where does that put you now, though? Since you're on Daylight Savings Time, we mere mortals in the Central time zone are on EST. Do you now RP an hour behind?
  2. Welcome back, Steel. You should be embarrassed. I think it's really cool to see how everyone was so quick to reach out. I'd be happy to play with you as well, I'll just have to wait until April 14 to do so. Soon, crappy lappy... soon you will be overthrown by the PS4 and my FFXIV woes will be at an end!
  3. Hey, I played EVE online for like 9 months. I was also into Battlefield 2 for a while. Believe me, FFXIV's community is like walking into a Mormon church compared to a really toxic community. I don't find EVE to be a toxic community at all. With EVE, you know EXACTLY what you're walking into. EVE is all about competition, and the competitive spirit shines more brightly in that game than in any other I've ever played. Yes, you get some people who are just overly mouthy. Yes, you get some people who complain too much. That said, I've never once played a game that didn't have those types of players, and even RP is not immune to these types of players. You have to have an understanding in EVE that when you undock, you ARE going to lose your ship. You might not lose it right away but on a long enough timeline, even the mightiest of Titans gets blown up. The people who thrive on PVP in that game are the ones who fully understand that their ship will explode in a fiery blaze of glory and just want to blow up as many things as possible before it happens. Never once have I participated in a toxic fleet. Those players are immediately muted and if they disrupt fleet ops, they're just flat out kicked. Playing EVE does require thicker skin than with most games simply because of the nature of the game. It's kill AND be killed, not kill OR be killed. I absolutely love it. Also, my character is advancing while I type this message on my lunch break at work even though I'm not logged in. Gotta love that.
  4. It looks awesome. I was going to skip it when I saw that the cost was $40 and it wasn't even really a full game. When the cost dropped to $30 I was on the fence. They said that the main mission only took 2 hours to complete, but even MGSIV didn't take too much longer than that on a speed run, which was probably how they got the 2 hour number anyway. I won't get to play it very much tonight. It's our table top night, so I'll have enough time to get home, get REALLY interested in what I'm playing, and then put my Storyteller hat on.
  5. I get so sit at work all day long. The big tease is that it'll likely be in my hands around lunch time, forcing me to stare at it for half the day. Oh, sweet torture!
  6. Don't know if anyone else ended up attending this event or not but it was two-fisted cool. This was my second con, and I have to say it was a lot more fun than the first. I only knew three people at the last con and they were all on staff. This time I was actually able to attend panels with friends, do some group "site seeing," and got to goof off after the doors closed. Hope to see some of you at KC RenFest this fall!
  7. Hey, don't blame me. I didn't make the rules, I just follow them. And yes, Epic RP is the best RP. You just can't call it ERP because... someone already made another acronym out of that. Anywho... I'm hoping that I'll get a chance to participate in some epic storylines here in the near future. April 14, baby. I used to do a great deal of text-based RP before I ever started playing MMOs and even have gone back to moderated RP chats several times over the years. RP is my primary reason for being involved in an MMO. If I don't have a good story to keep me interested, I leave. I should start participating in an RP thread again.
  8. Now I have "Don't Stop Believin'" stuck in my head. And I just lost The Game. Again.
  9. I would be very interested in exploring a story like that. No one sees me around, however, because I'm essentially on a forced hiatus from the game. My laptop gets 13 fps inside an inn, so you can just imagine what walking around town is like. I mostly log in to do seasonal events (which is a HUGE headache to accomplish on my system) and randomly say hi to a few people that I know. I would be available to anyone via whisper in game or in Skype. Otherwise, I have to wait until next month, when the PS4 version finally goes live. Then I will get to do a desperate grind to catch up on end-game content whilst trying to reestablish myself in the RP world. For the OP, looks like things are starting to turn around for you. Cliques do tend to pop up here and there, and it's difficult to break in to those, but if you keep being persistent and trying to have as much fun as possible, you'll be fine. Like I said, it seems as though you've had some good experiences, and you have certainly received many responses in this thread. I'm always open to RP with the restrictions that I've listed above out of sheer necessity. My main is listed over to the left.:moogle:
  10. I didn't have high hopes for Age of Conan like some of the others as it was during a time when the sole focus of MMOs was to attempt to dethrone WoW. I did have very high hopes for Neverwinter Online. I was going to purchase one of the founder packs until I got a chance to play a closed beta. I hated the game so much in more ways than I can list that I just wrote it off entirely. I have ESO preordered for the PS4 but I'm hearing very mixed reviews on that. Luckily, it doesn't come out until July so I'll have time to cancel if the PC version is a flop.
  11. Visually, FFVIII was an excellent game. They made some HUGE improvements over FFVII in that regard. What I didn't like about it was the fact that Squall was, in my mind, the most boring and least compelling hero in Final Fantasy history. Also, junctioning was just a bad concept all around. If you use magic then your characters get weaker. In addition to that, junctioning powerful magic makes you essentially invincible if you want to spend countless hours stockpiling. No thanks! I didn't like Tidus as a main character, either, but he was an improvement over Squall. I did think that blitzball sucked but I'm not a big fans of mini games in general. The combat for FFX was okay for all 10 minutes that you actually got to play the game instead of watching an endless string of cutscenes.
  12. For seven games, the Final Fantasy series was nothing but pure awesome. FFVIII devoured a small part of my soul. I hoped that nothing so horrendous could ever happen to the series ever again. FFIX came out, and it didn't suck. Yay! Then, FFX came out and I found myself actually missing FFVIII. It was that bad. But did they stop there? No... no, they went on and made a sequel. Screw... that... While FFXIII wasn't nearly as good as FFXII, it wasn't the horror that was FFX and still outshone FFVIII by leaps and bounds. Even so, a sequel? And not even that, but TWO sequels? Why not a sequel to FFVII? Or FFVI? Or FFXII? Or... anything other than VIII? Here's hoping that FFXV gets back to pure awesome, like what we had with FFXII.
  13. I'd banished that from my mind. You've summoned the memory back from the black depths. And I'm pretty sure that I just lost The Game.
  14. Maybe they'll run the event again next year. If so, you'll get a plethora of horsey hats.
  15. Most ridiculous event ever. I'm sure you can talk someone into modeling a horse hat for you, though.
  16. That would have been way too early for me then. I started sometime around WotLK and quit a bit before Pandas, but was playing on and off around that time. I'm pretty sure that I was on Moon Guard by the time that WotLK came out. Guess we probably never bumped into each other. Still, a fellow Earthen Ringer!
  17. I started out on the Alliance side on ER. I had a Night Elf Druid named Nabiy or Erets, I can't remember which. He was in the Tamarack Order, the first guild formed on the server. I did end up switching over to the Horde after some time away from the game, though, and eventually moved to Moon Guard because of the higher population of RPers.
  18. I used to RP on Earthen Ring but it's been many years ago. I'm not even 100% sure now which characters I even played there.
  19. I miss you too, you know >=| And I'll have you know Val got thoroughly chewed out for that >_> If you can't push someone off a cliff for dancing with you without getting chewed out for your actions then what can you do? Seriously, a guy tries to have a little fun...
  20. Ul'dah is in the desert. About any city is cooler by default. Ul'dah is still more chalk full of win and fun, though. 8-)
  21. I got to play around with the touchpad a bit. While it can be a little handy to have, I find that it doesn't have the full functionality of a mouse. You can click on things but clicking and dragging is impossible. Switching up the UI is not nearly as seamless as it is with a mouse. I'll probably have to invest in a new wireless keyboard and mouse (the F1-F12 keys don't function on mine) and hook them up to the PS4. Then I can switch back and forth between them and the controller depending on what I'm doing. I have been very pleased with the beta overall and am looking forward to Phase 2. HUGE improvement over the PS3.
  22. Most of the RP is in the coolest of the three cities. How is that bad? Also, I would obviously vote for Balmung as that is the server I play on. As others have said, Gilgamesh is also a great server with merits all of its own. Either place should provide an enjoyable home.
  23. I also recently felt that my character was derailed beyond repair for various reasons. For me, the solution ended up being a completely new character. I'm happy with my class, just not with my character. I used Fantasia to change my race, date of birth, and god. After that, I paid for a server transfer and created a character with my old character name on the server so I'll be forced to change names when I transfer back. Speaking of which, I forgot to transfer back last night. Anywho, I get a brand new character this way without losing any the hours I put into leveling and I can recreate the old character and put him on the backburner in case I ever have the urge to RP with him. Of course, leveling him a second time isn't likely, so he'll probably be an RP only character.
  24. Keep in mind Kage, doing the hop will wipe your friend's list, linkshells, and your FC (if you own one.) There is a delay of 24 or 48 hours. I'm not sure, the mogstation has the prices though. You can't use the World Transfer Service if it's been used within the last 3 days.
