How did I get here? Questions from a non-legacy newbie
Teardrop replied to Amiabelle's topic in RP Discussion
I don't believe this to be the case. 1.0 characters have the option of considering themselves to be time-skipped (optional meaning they get the tattoo marking, but have the option to turn it on or off as they choose to fit their personal story's circumstances). I believe the opening new sequence is the beginning of your current ARR story, being chosen by the big blue crystal and whatnot *aaaaand of course, Free jumps in with the specifics while I'm busy typing the derp...* -
I think the best thing to do some cases is to accept the world you are playing in, which is Hydaelyn, and in this specific case where the bards come from the archers by tradition. Unfortunately for those who wish it, its not a European setting, or Middle Earth, or elsewhere, where those skills might be separate. Sometimes you really just have to role play in the world you are given and accept certain things in that world . Its kind of like saying "I want to be a Nuclear Engineer, but why does it have to come from the Academical background? Why not from Oil-Changer, or 7/11 Nightshift Clerk class? I could have studied books on my own after work..." The things they do during their time as an archer, the hymns they might sing while cutting shafts, the particular finger timing associated with the draw and loosing of the bowstring, all possibly accumulate at a point where those archery skill readily translate with a bit of additional effort into wielding the power of music. Polishing shields or pounding sides of beef in a freezer may just not have the same preparatory effect for becoming a Bard within the land of Eorzea . After you learn the bard trade and maybe don't want to string another bow again? Up to you, probably something one could role play...the video linked below for the Bard's quest "Doing it the Bard Way" even shows a bard that can no longer use his bow to attack things  Playing a bard is in my (eventual) sights...I'm glad this conversation started !

The wiki might have some answers for you, and can be found in the button between "Forum" and Linkshells" above. The community player base themselves are in the process of discussing various topics of lore and race all the times on the forums, filling in and fleshing out where the official narrative is thin or non-existent, or defining what the lore might mean to them in a particular case. Off-site, I'll link for you the Final Fantasy Wikia, as well as the Gamerescape FFXIV site. Hope that helps !

The lalafell with mysterious green and orange eyes
Teardrop replied to Tolka's topic in Welcome Desk
Hi Tolka! Its wonderful that you are jumping right in to share with the community your creative works. If I could offer one suggestion, however, to aid in the enjoyment of your writing; perhaps you could clean up the errant coding permeating the script . Other than that, thanks for sharing! *edit; you caught it, good job!* -
Hello Hywell! Enjoyed the story you've already put out there...brave first step  Being willing to contribute is one of the things that make these forums great, and it seems you'll fit right in

I think its easy to forget that an accent can develop that distinguishes different regions within the same language. It doesn't have to be necessarily a derivative of an ancient foreign language, it can be regional accents, dialect, etc of the same language, in this case, Eorzean. Regional accents and dialects occur in a wide variety of countries within the same native tongue, not developed by foreign migration or non-native speakers, but through simply being in a different location in the country, and I don't think it would be a stretch of the imagination to think the same thing could not occur within Eorzea. Not sure running into people with accents in Eorzea would be such an improbability...I know I run into it all the time during my travels through the States with native English-speakers . We may speak English, but we definitely don't all speak it the same  ! Compared to a bastard half-whatever orphan raised by adoptive parents outside their race, honestly, someone wanting their character to have an accent is really the easiest thing for me to swallow readily regarding one's background story...not sure it would ever bother me to run into one.

Boy, a brand-new Lala, already set up with a linkshell...what a fancy little fellow you are  ! Nice to meet you, hope to learn more about you in the future  !

Welcome, Poe, and tell the bird to quiet down with all that "Nevermore" stuff...kept me up all night . I hope you'll find these forums as helpful and inviting as I did...there's a lot you can learn here about the game that you will soon be enjoying . Good luck, hope to meet you in game !

Well, introducing yourself in this way is the first step in removing yourself from "wallflower" status ! If you contribute more in the forum discussions, put yourself out there a bit, I think you'll feel you'll feel more comfortable in participating on the fly, and this may carry over into your in-game rp dealings as well . Welcome, hope to see you in game  !

Hello, and welcome ! There are plenty of things to see and do here, and we look forward to new faces and the new perspective and insight they bring. If you want to get to know a little bit more about Eorzea, there is the site's Wiki, as well as several flowing threads on a whole range of topics, from race and class, to role-play prompts that allow you to further explore your own character in your own mind, and how they might fit in the land . Hope to see you in game, and good luck in your travels !

I think "scripted" is not so much rote word-by-word scripting of what exactly is to be said and whatnot, but an understanding of what events might be taking place that advances a particular story line. For example, in GW2, our group frequented the beach-side tavern in Lion's Arch. I was leading the advancement of the story, and would be re-introducing a nemesis from the past that would be an integral part of the continuation of the group's tale at that night's usual gathering. The script was that was the plan; this thing would unfold at this particular meeting. How the actual events play out are left to the devices of the character's themselves, but the situation they are initially faced with, when introduced, might be thought of as a scripted event. People and organizations create story lines for their characters and members; how those are introduced may be through scripted events...events that unfold with an initial plan, but are played out as they will. That's my thought, at least !

Wow, certainly a lot of in depth thought and detail put into Oskar's background and origin :surprise: ! Twinflame's remarks are a great way to view things when presented with an individual's very creative backstory that may not entirely mesh with one's own, and I think that reflects the way that many different clan cultures and traditions can be implemented within the Duskwight community without them starting to butt heads with each other  Great stuff, though...I'm glad you came back and made a guest appearance to share with us! This has been an active, detailed, and creative thread, on a race's sub-clan that is one of the smallest in player-base representation. The fact that this thread continues to thrive speaks highly of those participating, and will wear the dusky mantle in-game . This has been a great discussion, with wonderful contributions that enhance our understanding of each other, and what it will mean to play a Duskwight within the realm of this community. Eisen, Kari makes a good point. Last beta session, during the Blue Skies event, Vairemont (a fellow Duskwight) and I were feeling intense pressure from some of the other party members over our voiced role play views on Wildwoods, as events lead to such discussion. There were those who whispered me and said that while their character would not allow such an attitude to stand, they themselves appreciated our roleplay of the Duskwight animosities. That is an actual in-game example of how that might work out . Also, I think that when you are thinking through your character to begin with, when you decide that your character would forgo the animosities that are written into the lore itself, you might take a long-hard look as to "why". Why do you want to play your character that way, in a manner that is against what your race would normally adhere to? What in their lives removes that animosity from within them? Some may actually have an answer to that...Eva is a light-skin Duskwight that the Wildwoods have toyed with by letting her think she can fully assimilate into their normal society while secretly laughing behind her back (not as EVA tells it, mind you, but how Isobeau would see it  ) If you are like many other characters that go for the "half-something raised by adoptive parents of an entirely different race" kind of thing, or something similar that is a true part of your background and explains the lack of learned animosities, great! But if you can't really come up with a good answer other than inconvenience, or a fear of what others may think, its my opinion that one should take a second look at that. There's not a whole lot to make one think that animosity is squashed by the greater Eorza NPC community lore wise...if it was, it would have happened already and not have been written into the lore. Its easy to see that in Eorzea, the Lalas, Roegadyn, Hyur, and Miqo'te either ignore the Elezen animosities, or perhaps chime in and prepetuate them on behalf of their beloved Wildwood...there are no civil rights marches going on within the NPCs to my knowledge. Certainly people can role play as they want, as mentioned often, player characters are exceptional over NPCs, and run at the whim of the person controlling them. Again though, if its not in the background of your character, does the "why" of it follow any sort of role play function, or is it more a comfort thing to soothe real-life conventions. Having said all that, I do have a Wildwood I plan on playing, and the extent of his animosity will probably be role-played out in the occasional snide remark...he'll be able to operate and function in the presence of a Duskwight without being overly disruptive .

Too many small details might get lost with the small avatar. I might see how 2 looks, and if the classy details remain, go with that

Well, you are energetic, if nothing else Looks like you have a lot of plans for the near future, ask away if you need further detail on how to accomplish them. Welcome, and enjoy your stay

I had to kind of think about this as well, Eva, as to why my Clan would use a physical line with a coded set of yanks and tugs used as signals for communication, when a linkpearl should work :dodgy: And, I also made mention that for whatever reason, linkpearl communication wasn't always reliable in certain subterranean locations. We'll have to keep an eye on a more thorough explanation why that might be the case if one turns up in lore or whatnot, but I'm comfortable with that assumption as-is for our purposes

If you are looking for an academic setting for your RP, there is the Vylbrand Academy of Mystics, Tactics, and Trade, detailed in greater detail in the Linkshell Hall listing here.

This is a great place to get your feet wet, and learn some things about the game before you give it a try ! Take a walk around the forums, and I'm sure you'll find something to get your creative juices flowing and possibly point you in a direction you'd like your future character to go. The Linkshell Hall has a listing of the various linkshell and free companies looking for members here. Take a look at what they have to offer, see if any of them appeal to you. Good luck with your travels in Eorzea !

Oh, I'm proud of my time as a Daughter of Elinu...some of the things I'm most proud of I've written about my Elin. If I can develop Isobeau's character a fraction of how my Elin was, I'll be a happy role player in FFXIV 8-). Moeblob...heh :dodgy: I'd love to know more about everyone's background, and how it might relate to Clan Mauvaix . There is still a lot for me to learn about the setting we're about to delve into, so a lot of the things I have conceptualized are not quite set in stone, simply because I'm not sure where those stones are to be found yet . I'm certainly one to respect other's choices as far as their clan make-up, structure, traditions, etc...I do think, as in real life, there is great room for diversity in such things, and I look forward with great interest to see what those things are . It seems that the general consensus of those commenting is that the Duskwights for the most part are a close community within themselves, and I think thats really the only way that a Duskwight Linkshell would work. If the thought was our race was troubled with internal conflict, warfare, and strife, well, it would set up a situation where we would be at each other's throats much more than even the Wildwood's. "Sure, treehugger there called me a Grey, but your cousins stole the last bags of blackrock fungal florets we had tucked away in our winter stores, and my clan elders starved as a result...I'M GONNA KILL YOU !!!" We would obviously look to each other with even less trust than those races who merely call us names. From a role play standpoint, what are some of the reasons one might put a Duskwight linkpearl into use? From an OOC standpoint, how might a player utilize a Duskwight linkpearl to enhance their role play experience? Some things to further ponder...we have a couple of weeks to do so

(And here I thought it was to be a tale of Tyrion Lannister transplanted to Eorzea...+1 for travelling down the road less taken . Loved your story!)

There's a couple parts in the lore where it basically says the Duskwight retreated from the surface in order to live a peaceful life away from conflict and among themselves. Why would they retreat from surface wars only to create eternal clan conflicts and inner warfare within their own kind? Maybe a family or two with disagreements between themselves, but honestly, it sure looks like everything points to the opposite. In fact, I'd say the the only real thing Duskwights have going for them is internal bonds and loyalty. If everyone else thinks you're scum and wretched, who else are you going to turn to except your own kind? Again, you retreat from the surface to find peace among yourselves, then you create bitter struggle and warfare with yourselves. Not sure that situation is the plight of the Duskwights on a larger scale, based on the above comments. Rather, I think they know their kind is all they can depend on. They will feed on the other races, hence their reputation as thieves an pillagers, but I don't see anything to support that large-scale violence or animosity occurs within the Duskwights against others of their like. I really enjoy reading the cultural rituals and symbolism you've used in your background, Eva. I delved quite a bit into that sort of development as an Elin in Tera, to take them away from the simple cutsie-character everyone took them as :dodgy:. Those kinds of things really breath life into a people, and as I further explore what it is to be a Duskwight, I'll definitely delve into that further . My Nymeia's Apron-String" was a lifeline the Clan Miners used to trace the route to the furthest extension of their dig. It was named as such because it was used to not only mark the direct path out of the depths, but would also help locate their remains should a collapse occur, so, like fate, it was going to bring them out of the tunnels alive or dead...it mattered not which, for its purpose .
