Guess it depends if "VIII" is a codename, if he's an agent, or a commander of things If all three apply...I like "Codename VIII", if I had to choose one.

The one point I find somewhat interesting is that the Admins and Mods for this website are Balmung Legacy players. The same non-inclusive, cliquish power lords who will crush your spirit and your role play by their mere presence are the ones hosting the forums that foster these very conversations and ensuring they don't turn into a hot mess that bullies either side, not to mention supporting the community split with forum structural changes to begin with . I read somewhere someone mentioning that these forums aren't named "Balmung Roleplayers Coalition", and that is exactly right...speaks volumes, doesn't it ? It looks to me that at least on these forums its very easy for most people not to be in awe of the Balmung Legacy players here...people seem pretty ready to disregard or ignore them in general when their message isn't one that wants to be considered or heard, so I'm not sure how they would suddenly have a dominating presence in the grand scheme of things in Balmung role play. All, what...20 or 30 of them? Perhaps within their tiny hold-overs linkshells from 1.0, but look at the LS/FC listings for Balmung and see how many of them are brand new organizations...last count, I think I found most were. And even in those old organizations, almost all have opened their arms to new players, instead of being closed off and standing to the side only playing with themselves . I'm sure there are sure a lot of reasons for wanting to go to Gilgamesh, but the thing against the Legacy player's supposed poor general attitudes, I'll never understand. I think actions do speak louder than words, in most cases, and in the case of the Legacy players who host and run this very site, we walk their figurative streets under extremely good graces, made to feel welcome and given tools to express ourselves and opinions, are left mostly to our own devices, and I see no reason why the way role play exposure to Legacy players on Balmung would be any different. As a player also starting off fresh here in FFXIV, of all the various aspects of these arguments I continue to read, this is the only one I'm truly boggled at :dodgy: .

Uknown to thyself [Ongoing backstory - OOC welcome]
Teardrop replied to Demon Fox's topic in Town Square (IC)
(Keep it coming! I enjoyed the writing, and I can't wait to see more...thanks for sharing your creative work  ) -
Stop standing around handing out pie, and you just might find some time to write up your family tree Kidding though...I'm usually part of the welcoming wagon too (only 2 people welcomed me...*sniff* ). +1 for the work, Twinflame

*offers celery stick* Can't have everyone passing out sweets to the new folk !
-
Kyatai, if you keep offering everyone pie as they walk in the door...at least let them put their bags down first  ! Tabla Rasa...now there's a name I've not thought about in a while *looks over at the collector's edition box over on the shelf*. Isn't it nice that FFXIV got a new lease on life with ARR, instead of suffering the same sorry fate :dodgy: Sure looks like you'll fit in just nicely...resume seems to be in order here . Can't wait to see the wiki, look forward to meeting your character in game

Boy, after Nel came out with her wonderful welcoming video, I almost feel redundant in my greetings . But I will say that, as far as ideas for character backstory, there are quite a few discussions going on throughout the forums on various lore and race topics, and you might find one that either applies to your concept, or sparks a little idea in your head on which way you'd like to take your character. I see in your avatar info you have a character name already, so at least you've gotten that far If you do get stuck for an idea...go ahead and pose a question on the forums. There are plenty of people willing to chime in and help. Good luck with your character, and I hope to see you in game

If I understand correctly, there has been some mention somewhere that the schism in the Elezen race had something to do with or about the founding of Gridania, and the subterranean caverns below the Black Shroud were probably their point of origin. That was a long time ago, though, and its safe to say that Duskwights have spread out to wherever adequate subterranean locations could be found. And to sort of be more specific to your question, my own personal Clan would have been located in the region surrounding Ul'dah. We enjoy a great freedom of concept with our Duskwight clans, because the lore is so vague . I'd say you are safe to place your Clan wherever you desire. Look forward to seeing what you come up with, and if you'd like to add your finished work to our Duskwight Clan wiki, you can either input the information yourself, or PM me, and I'll put it in for you . Might as well head over there anyways (if you haven't already) to see what others are doing...might help you decide some things for your own background concept

Welcome Demon Fox! Do you have an idea for a character yet? Our site wiki page has information on the various races and lore, and there are always discussions going on in the forums that might give you a creative nudge, if you are still unsure which way to go Good luck, and I hope to meet you in game

The RPC Wiki can be accessed through one of the buttons toward the top of the webpage. Its completely driven by the members here, broken down into a variety of different subjects. You can look up other players, organizations, lore, locations, etc. It takes a bit to get used to, but once one plays with it a bit, its not too bad There are some default character creation templates one can use if wiki coding isn't exactly your thing. Good luck, and again, feel free to ask any questions you might have, either here, or on the various forum sub-sections

See, Myavar...quite a list of wonderfully in-depth traditions, customs, and passages here . I've come to find that when I need that sort of thorough support, all I need to do is invoke Eva's name, and she descends from whatever cloud she'd normally lounging on, all billowy robes, blinding light and feathers, to pass on whatever knowledge or opinion she has on the given topic...and people think Legacy players are scary

Ooohhh, Masquerade live action role play :surprise: !!! I'm sure it had to be seen to be believed Did you ever try role play in The Secret World? I sure wish I could love that game more...it deserves more love than it gets, I think Welcome to here, though. Do you have any ideas on a character yet? If not, and given your previous gaming proclivities, might I point your way towards the Duskwight Discussion thread? You may be glad you did 8-). Good luck, and I hope to see you in game

Taking screenshots in Char Creation Benchmark
Teardrop replied to Fates Skein's topic in Off-Topic Discussion
I've been using a free program called Greenshot, and I had the exact issues to begin with. When I went into the benchmark and changed from "Fullscreen" to "Borderless Windowed" in the Display Options, then I was able to get screenshots correctly. Hope that is your case as well, and this fixes your issue  -
There are certainly a few people that have some deep ceremonial backgrounds to their Clans...I think Eva has mentioned a few times various things regarding some pretty interesting traditions in either her or Oskar's background. The thought of "universal" traditions and ceremonies are interesting. Of course, even in the instance you cite, with the quinceanera, there are probably relative levels of participation that vary between families, due to perhaps how many generations removed they are from Mexico, regional, maybe financial (?) reasons, etc. If we were to uncover some aspect of Duskwight official lore that pointed to further traditions or cultural ceremonies, it would be interesting to see how us various players might integrate that into our backstory. I read in another thread somewhere that someone pointed to how our (meaning the Duskwight community) dealt with all the different back stories we seemed to have for our clans, the different traditions, etc. Basically, I think the point was we became a pretty tight community despite our vast differences in clan concepts because we just granted that things could be different between us all and still be perfectly valid and acceptable . Still, Myavar, there are still things that might bond a people, like quinceanera, that would show up throughout the various Clans. The difficulty comes when you run into someone who did not frequent this discussion, though. Does anyone have any "rites of passage" conceptualized for their particular clans at the moment? Might be fun to break them out and see what people have come up with Good question, Myavar  !

There's going to be your problem, Mr Wheel. Don't know if you noticed from the various surveys or postings of player's characters, but Miqo'te are the dominant race on Bizarro-Eorza...as thick as flies on a roadkill  Don't worry, Duskwights are good at standing in the shadows, then jumping out, stamping their foot, and "hissing" at them...usually sends the typical cat-person into their straight-tail fear posture, followed by a run in the opposite direction  Well, it works on actual cats, at least :dodgy:

My my, you have a long and storied history with RP and MMOs...seems that when you get over the initial shyness, you're in for the long-haul . What can we do to make you feel more comfortable? You know, jumping into one of the various conversations regarding the races, lore, character concepts, etc, is a good exercise in putting yourself out there. Have a look around, find a topic you have an opinion on, and contribute...we love that sort of thing here Good luck, glad to have you, and I hope to run into you in game  !

Quite an acceptable answer  !

So, its pretty obvious that Isobeau Mauvaix would be fairly easy to spot in a crowd, as she has a pretty distinctive look about her 8-). I also have a "blank" version of her that I fully plan on integrating into her role play; her, without the mask and face paint, a slightly different "casual" hairstyle. Now, I think I'd like to have her be able to wander about in kind of an "incognito" fashion, where someone might see her in the marketplace in Ul'dah and think "Wow, she looks familiar...can't quite place where I've seen her though", or people would draw the connection through contact and organic rp evolution. One of the problems I have with this is the name. I understand as role players, you are supposed to treat that big floaty name over the other character's head as something that isn't common knowledge, until revealed IC. But we all know if you're standing there introducing yourself to Jake Brightblade and he introduces himself as "Roger", your character wouldn't think anything about the discrepancy necessarily, while you the player is naturally going to think to them self "Hmmm, what's his game :? ?" What name you hang over your head is going to have some influence on the character's potential interactions rp wise, especially if you are trying to pull something unusual off, such as this. I can think of a few ways one might go about this. Choose a name close to yours ("Izzy Mauvaix"), and you pretty much give away the game right away. Chose a completely different alias name ("Carlotta Danger" ) perhaps keeps the question of you being one and the same person completely out of the other player's mind. Using a completely off name ("A'certain Someone") can attract attention, good and bad as being immersion breaking for others. What are some ways that playing in disguise or incognito can be handled, for those who want to integrate this type of role play into their character's repertoire? Maybe not so much in my particular case, but in general .

Welcome Aerion ! Keep an eye out for events during the next beta phase, just to see if there will be an opportunity to get your rp feet wet before actual release. Of course, that assumes you are able to play the beta  If not, good things come to those who wait...longer

Here is the link to the Duskwight Clan wiki. It seems that there are several ways that folk are going about naming their Clan, Rosekitten. Some use their own last name, as their family was perhaps the prominent member of the clan. Some might use a different name as the clan name, signifying the dominant family's name, to which their's was a small part of a larger tribe. I think some may even be naming their clan based on the region, or some significant aspect of the clan's activities. Perhaps by seeing what others have done, it will give you an idea of what might be right for you We've got 8 listings...and growing
-
That's really well done ! Please share more!
-
And thats perfectly ok, Rosekitten, as my clan was based on being sort of a mining operation I think its safe to say there are all sorts of possible Clan configurations and backstory possibilities, and as long as you weren't the family of secret Drow that dug all the way down from the Underdark to Eorzea and came to blend in with Duskwight society, I think most people would be more than happy to interact with whatever you come up with (and maybe there would be a few that wouldn't even mind the Drow angle, if that's really your thing  )

That's a pretty witty write-up, and a believable background and development for someone that will play out as a "comedic" character...there are funny people in real life too, after all Nice job!
