Character Wiki Rumors

Pssssssssst!  Rumors are still one of my favorite ways to build RP community, and to "spice up" wiki pages with interesting and fun tidbits.  Just wanted to encourage everyone again to open rumor sections on your wikis (and if you don't have a wiki, you should start one!  Simple and short is just fine!!) and to leave rumors on the pages of those you meet!  Every little tidbit makes the world a little more immersive, and makes the character a little easier to know and imagine!

Rumors are like, 60% of the reason I made a wiki page. They're so entertaining and lovely and wonderful. They're fun to write, they're fun to read, they're fun to share!

And perhaps most important of all, they're something that can spark in-character interactions, which really should be the whole point of a profile page!

 RUMOURRRRS

( Hello! Hypocrite speaking here. I actually get terrified and second-guess myself every time I'm about to add a rumour to someone's page. Ha! )

people leave rumors?

literally what

If you give people a section in your wiki to!  That's what I'm encouraging anyway ^_^

I had a section for years until just a couple days ago.

I removed it bevause it never saw activity and the big blank section made me self conscious.

I was starting to think it was some vestigial organ part of wiki formatting that no one actually used.

It can be hit or miss. Some roleplayers leave them religiously after any RP session, and some people only leave them when someone tags them first, and some people just forgot they have a wiki at all.

The purpose of this thread is to encourage it :)

Both leaving sections open for it, and writing them for others! Be bold! People will appreciate it!! And reciprocate :-D (often anyway!!)

A good rule of thumb is to link your wiki and/or RP profile in your sig. That can help remind people if they happen to forget.

I say this having not yet done that because my wiki is still a WIP ;-;

I'd add so many rumors to your wiki. ...

If it was ready for that.

It's a good way to know how the other characters perceive your character too.

But then again this coming from a guy who nuked his wikis only to be a pancake about it and bring it back anyway.

I-it's not like I'm asking for a rumour on Kurt 2.0 wiki or anything, tsun~

And I'd drop a line on Cass's wiki if it finally accepts rumours >w>

I want to leave Rumors but Orrin doesn't gossip, so I have trouble choosing an non gossipy "rumor" to contribute

This is pretty easy one to get around! Not everyone's a gossipmonger, but most characters will at least have something to say if asked about an acquaintance!

You could write rumors like they were responses to questions such as...

"Have you seen X anywhere lately? What's she been up to?"

"Hey, I was told to get in contact with X, do you know them?"

"Have you seen a little girl? Short, black hair? Just turned seven last month?"

"What can I learn about X for a modest sum of gil?"

Doesn't cover everything, but I'm sure you can finagle some way to have your character add rumors!

Yeah, it's a weird headspace to have to climb into. I tend to think of it as like, what if Warren was a helpful NPC and was an option on a dialogue list. It isn't the sort of thing he'd blurt out to strangers, but it's more fun to ignore the logic and write things for/about people.

Rumors don't need to be gossipy to contribute -- least, that's not how I look at it. I usually include things that detail my character's way of looking at someone that could be misinterpreted, misunderstood, or repeated incorrectly by someone else. For the latter, given enough repeats it's pretty much guaranteed.

Don't overthink the word "rumor" too -- I've seen people use it as a place to have their characters share observations or feelings about other characters.

That's a great way to put it Warren and Zhavi! They're like an almost-IC thing whose main role is to contribute to immersiveness and our vision of the world and the characters we populate it with :)

They do reflect on both the giver and receiver, but I wouldn't worry too much about seeming gossipy!

See, now I have to make it ready for that!

I almost never remember to leave rumors on wiki's, though I really should get back into the habit of it.  There are a few people I need to go back and drop rumors on, but that requires effort and I just overhauled Glio's wiki.

.... /effort

I've just been looking at and adding some rumors lately, and I thought I would bump this advice thread!

I know that tumblr and whatnots have become a lot more popular, and I know that wikis are pretty much impossible to keep up to date, but leaving rumors on other people's wikis are like the best way to make a positive impression on them, and to build up an idea of a character's reputation :)

I really do find them more informative than any amount of narrative that might be written about them!

So, if you have a friend, or even just an acquaintance you know out there with a wiki, leave them a little rumor! They won't forget it, and you'll both enjoy it!
