Warren Castille Posted July 6, 2015 Share #1 Posted July 6, 2015 [21:11]>> Warren: You do know you showed up to a rules-based competition acting like a huge antagonist, right? Reaslistically, you got murdermaimed as soon as you drew steel against the audience. [21:11]Some Guy >> (um, no that's not realistic its a final fantasy game. what's unrealistic is people not getting injured at all. if my character dies, so be it - doens't change that it's unrealistic for people to not get injured) [21:12]Some Guy >> (enforcing rules on rp is silly anyway its a fun event but then again i guess people cant stroke egos if theyre not winning) [21:12]>> Warren: No one knows who you are. You ran in attacking people. You were dead as soon as you attempting to derail the event. [21:12]>Warren: You've got no idea what you're talking about. Thanks for playing. [21:12]Some Guy >> (so power emoting too...wow another reason to focus on gilgamesh i guess) [21:13]Some Guy >> (please dont' message or harass me further) So, with names scrubbed (Except for mine) I wanted to know how this floats with the general population. I was at an advertised event and some Dragoon came flying in emoting intent on audience members. [21:Same guy suddenly begins to laugh, his eyes glowing bright red as he draws his lance and begins attempting to injure as many of those nearby as possible. [21:10]Same guy: ((so much for the inclusive event. another RPC popularity circle i guess...)) I don't even know what question to couch here. What the fuck is anyone supposed to take away from this? Spethah Posted July 6, 2015 Share #4 Posted July 6, 2015 There's trolls and then there's people like him. I don't get why someone would do that. You gain literally nothing from it other than people thinking you're a coddy pillock. Hopefully not every event has to handle this crap. Link to comment

Faye Posted July 6, 2015 Share #6 Posted July 6, 2015 I've had people try this kind of stuff at my events before (granted, the ones at mine seemed more earnestly well-intentioned about it, even if still very misguided). Not only is it disruptive (I understand the argument of "open world RP" and I like spontaneity, but you have to understand that there is a schedule in place for these events, and people go to a date auction for date auction RP, they go to a rolling combat event to do/spectate combat RP with rolls, etc.), but people are rarely fully prepared to accept the IC fall out. People are going to hate and shun your character. People will attack and try to kill/arrest your character. People would report the incident to grand companies, and you'd realistically have NPC's on the lookout for your character. It never fails that they underestimate the amount of people who are going to dogpile onto their characters with weapons. And, then there's of course naturally no believable escape, so they always magically "teleport" away somehow. So my two cents: Don't do it, and prepare to say goodbye to your character if you do. Max Posted July 6, 2015 Share #7 Posted July 6, 2015 What a weirdo. ICly, if you're gonna draw steel with the intent to do the audience harm at a fight tournament filled with seasoned warriors, you'd probably be cut down in a instant. IDK what that guy was trying to argue with you. Link to comment
Addison Posted July 6, 2015 Share #8 Posted July 6, 2015 I think when people take the time out of their busy schedules and lives to plan something for an RP community, they have every right to set ground rules that promote cooperative roleplay. It looks to me as if that guy was just being a douchebag. "...he draws his lance and begins attempting to injure as many of those nearby as possible" isn't even a real emote to me. It doesn't specify who the targets were, just those 'nearby.' Well what's nearby? 6 inches? A foot? A yard? Did you stab people with your lance or did you swoop it in a horizontal arc? It leaves a lot to interpretation, and since this guy wants to play the part of the antagonist, he needs to be more specific. And honestly? If some random guy just walks into (insert public place here) and starts beating the crap out of people for no apparent reason, I'm pretty sure others would step up and try to placate him. Even if that means a punch to the head. Link to comment

Even if that means a punch to the head. He did run into the crowd, we were tightly gathered. In his half-defense, I was halfway to emoting that I casually decapitated him (unposted) because 1) I've got a history at the Grindstone and 2) You SHOWED UP AT A TOURNAMENT OF FIGHTERS AND PICKED A FIGHT. Try and jump the fence at the Octagon during the Main Event of UFC. I dare you. Link to comment
OverlordOutpost Posted July 6, 2015 Share #10 Posted July 6, 2015 It's clear given the lack of specificity in the emote, the situation, and their response, that they weren't there to actually truly RP out a antagonist. They just wanted to cause issues. You don't go to scheduled events and try to steal the spot light for your own personal RP. Link to comment

I'm biased, admittedly, but jumping into the crowd and attacking spectators seems the very embodiment of "stealing spotlight." You're derailing an event to make everyone focus on you. Link to comment
Grott Posted July 6, 2015 Share #12 Posted July 6, 2015 This is a thing people do? I thought everyone knew this was a no-no. This dude can't be older than fourteen. If he is, he's just a troll, or ...really stupid. Yeah, you're in the right to tell him to shut up and go home. "REALISTICALLY I COULD ATTACK PEOPLE" sure, but 1. you'd get killed, and 2. why would you do that? ICly and OOCly, why would you do that? ICly, it's an event (I've read) was full of people with weapons and the ability to use them. If you wanted to attack a bunch of unsuspecting people, you should go to... actually don't go anywhere. Almost everyone in this game is carrying weapons. OOCly, this is just rude, egotistical, and overall bad form. I wouldn't even waste the time being mad about this, dude. That guy was dumb. I'd forget it ever happened. EDIT: ...It is a pretty funny story, though. Link to comment

Dravus Posted July 6, 2015 Share #16 Posted July 6, 2015 I feel like most people here are going to be in firm agreement in regards to the proper etiquette at role-playing events. I've found that the best thing to do in these situations is to just ignore problematic individuals, especially if they're not willing to compromise or listen to constructive criticism. If it's someone seeking attention then they've succeeded. If it's someone genuinely new and overwhelmed by role-play then they're simply burning bridges by not being co-operative. Link to comment

If you don't like it, don't go. You don't get to show up to an event and be a rude jerk. THis so damn hard. It's a planed event not and NOT the spot open world rp. To be part of events you kind of have to play by the rules. Guy was going out of his way to interrupt an event as I see it. Safest way to deal with it would just ot hope everyone blacklists him and gets back to the event acting like he is not there. Link to comment
LiadansWhisper Posted July 6, 2015 Share #19 Posted July 6, 2015 The only sane response, Warren, is to slap the guy on ignore. Engaging with him, trying to reason with him...those ways lead to madness. Blacklist every time. :dodgy: Link to comment
Amielle Posted July 6, 2015 Share #20 Posted July 6, 2015 Just because it's a public event doesn't make it a free-for-all. He can go do that elsewhere, with people that want to be part of what he's doing. Call the person out on what they're doing, and if they aren't willing to conform to the rules of the event, then blacklist and ignore. Link to comment
Unnamed Mercenary Posted July 6, 2015 Share #21 Posted July 6, 2015 I think part of the issue is that getting about 60 people to blacklist a person is quite unreasonable. Especially with the amount of work that Warren and related put in to making sure everything is run properly. Coordinating that many people while keeping the other arbiter and here's in the loop takes a lot of attention. And a lot of people have very different views on how to use the blacklist. I could almost certainly guarantee that if he'd done some /yell "Everyone, please blacklist who is trolling the event" there would have been an outcry. Link to comment
Melodia Posted July 6, 2015 Share #22 Posted July 6, 2015 *Commences Sirklejerkism* These kind of trolls are just looking for a fight with someone, likely the organizer. You did right, Warren. And if anyone said "Well it's public! There's no rules!" I point you to Larry David on "Curb Your Enthusiasm" where he once stated correctly: "It's common courtesy. In the middle of the night, if I wake up to use the bathroom, do I need a sign to tell me to walk quietly so I don't wake others? No. why? Because it's common courtesy." Link to comment
Dogberry Posted July 6, 2015 Share #23 Posted July 6, 2015 Look, this party you planned has a lot of people attending, and statistically someone is going to show up already drunk, puke in the pool, get naked, and pick a fight, so it might as well be me. You're welcome. Link to comment

Reiner Dorn Posted July 6, 2015 Share #25 Posted July 6, 2015 Yeah This has only been a drop in a bucket of Trolls at Runestone. God knows how many Warren has had to deal with on Saturday. I'm usually proactive, speak with them once in a pm and ask them to stop. Then one ooc yell to everyone that the event and staff do not support this person or their interruption then go on about my event. Link to comment
