ExAtomos Posted April 25, 2016 Share #4 Posted April 25, 2016 I've been wanting something like this in game for a while, so I'm super excited. A little concerned over the solo nature of the thing though... while I'll admit many times I would love to run stuff solo, I've always chastised myself saying this is a MMO for crying out loud. But now we have a soloable (in theory, lol) dungeon... What do you guys think? Link to comment
Nirri Posted April 25, 2016 Share #5 Posted April 25, 2016 I wonder if they mean like you can actually do it all solo or more like... You can que up by yourself? Link to comment
ExAtomos Posted April 25, 2016 Share #6 Posted April 25, 2016 I wonder if they mean like you can actually do it all solo or more like... You can que up by yourself? It does say "Play solo", so that is how I understood it. And the up to 4 people I'm guessing would mean you can go in with 2 or 3 in the party as well. But you're right, it could just mean 'use the DF'. Maybe the JP text under it would clarify... Link to comment
Warren Castille Posted April 25, 2016 Share #7 Posted April 25, 2016 So this sounds a lot like Nyzul Isle, a quasi-instanced dungeon from FFXI. The way Nyzul worked was: It was a 100-floor dungeon that was "randomly generated" each time. Each room had jigsaw-like walls inside of it that would change on every attempt, and each floor was made up of a random number of rooms. Your goal was to find the exit to each floor as quickly as possible, while also defeating monsters and, every 20 floors, a boss. Adding to the challenge were random floor effects: Sometimes they'd restrict magic, or weaponskills, or reduce your stats, or sometimes you'd get a random bonus instead. It was a lot of dice being rolled that made for a lot of fun, not hurt by there being checkpoints every five floors. So, Palace of the Dead features: Randomly generated dungeons filled with monsters, where the goal is to find the exit to the next floor while also killing things for loot, and every so many floors also fighting a boss, where you'll randomly get hit with bonuses or restrictions... If I had to bet, the content is "soloable" in the sense that FATEs are. Going alone? Numbers and HP scale so it's possible, but it'll be slower than bringing friends to help chainsaw things down. I think there's a lot of potential for this kind of content! If this becomes the go-to source for unique glamours and the like, that'll keep it as something worth doing as patches progress: Compare that with Diadem, content that died an immediate death as soon as item level increased. My hope is that being higher DDilvl won't make it a pain to group with friends who are lower. Link to comment
Warren Castille Posted April 25, 2016 Share #8 Posted April 25, 2016 Double post: The twitch stream for certain indicated you can run it by yourself. They drew specific attention to the fact that there was only one player in the screenshots, and specifically said "You can challenge this alone, and we'll have job-specific player rankings for those who do." Ok, cool. Thanks for the clarification. Also... job specific rankings... so much for everyone going as SMN, SCH, and WAR. That's really damn cool though; I'd love to try out different classes in there to see how each does. You'll definitely learn a lot about the class's abilities, that's for sure. Link to comment

Yeah, I don't recall if they mentioned there'd be any kind of reward attached to it, but I could see them doing something like a score attack: X enemies defeated across Y floors in Z minutes = NEW HIGH SCORE. They did openly say that this would be casual content, but so long as there's cool-looking armor inside of it I could see plenty of reason to keep pushing in. I think the pure-light weaponry looked cool, so collecting glamours sounds plenty nice to me. Link to comment
Jana Posted April 25, 2016 Share #11 Posted April 25, 2016 Reminds me if other MMOs with a "score attack" solo dungeon/tower/etc. Those usually had bragging rights rewards in the form of cosmetic gear, bit sometimes functional prizes.were included too. Link to comment

XIV hates excluding people from getting things, though, with the only exception being I think the seasonal PVP rewards and the official forum scarf prize. Since everything in this dungeon appears to be funsies-only, I'd guess it would be more like "reach a score of this much, get a piece of armor" or something. Or, knowing SE, you get nothing at all! Jana Posted April 25, 2016 Share #13 Posted April 25, 2016 Might be a cumulative score to cater to the Relic grind crowd, "Save up 4000 points to get this armor" where that number is a few very good runs or many many bad ones. Link to comment
Branson Thorne Posted April 26, 2016 Share #15 Posted April 26, 2016 I'm really looking forward to this. I already solo lower leveled dungeons, just because I can. So this sounds very promising! Link to comment

Warren Castille Posted June 2, 2016 Share #17 Posted June 2, 2016 European preview went live today. HEY GUYS. WANNA KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON WITH GELMORRA? Edit: It seems the weapons are all the pure-light weapons and the armor is a one-piece i90 AF clone. This makes me wonder what the Heavensward jobs are going to be wearing on entry, since they don't get "normal" AF. Link to comment

World of Warcraft. Mists of Pandaria had Best time holders that award dungeon specific titles until the end (which if you held one best you got Mistwalker) and depending on your class, unique Xmog set, The Pandaren Phoenix of your choice (later to be retroactive reward of all 4) and the title "The Undaunted" Warlords of Draenor has the similar thing but now weapon Xmog, A Yeti Mount and the title The Indomitable. However the problem with CMs were that they can't be done solo, were not randomly generated and was about killing a specific amount of enemies and finish with a high time for gold or Realm Best. This system for FF14 i feel is FAR superior to the (Soon to be Replaced with D3 Rift style) Challenge Mode in terms of the approach and the fact you can solo que if you can't get a group or don't feel like grouping up.
