Ugh come on, don't you ever have ANY compliments for square? I happen to think the emote is great. And I can agree to their wanting to limit it to housing, out of view of the public.

Seriously, I played world of warcraft for 8 years. The server Moon Guard was especially bad and when they cross realm zoned all the damn servers, every single inn in every single town became ERP central with people putting themselves into inappropriate positions on beds and tables.

So I can agree with this policy. Don't like the emote. Don't use it. Don't like that they are trying to keep the game world clean of ERP trash, get over it. ERP in personal housing, fine, let em have at it, as long as the rest of us don't see it.

Wow there kitty. Calm down.

I think it's a rather silly policy as you can already emote spam into compromising positions for screenshots. Can they at least let me sit on the bed instead of the edge please? I am kind of happy about the emote though. Baby steps in a good direction!

As someone who played exclusively on Moon Guard for several years, and still has characters on Moon Guard and logs in there semi-regularly...

This isn't really correct.  That shit doesn't happen outside of Goldshire, for the most part, and a single part of a single inn in Silvermoon City.  Otherwise, inns are tame as hell.  Will you find ERPers around Azeroth on Moon Guard?  Sure.  But I find ERPers in FFXIV all the time, and I've found them on every single RP server I've ever been on, so I really don't know what you're getting at.

Hahaha, their explanation is funny, and I can understand it. I don't think they're focusing on ERPers but on random people who will surely find a new tool for weird screenshots (or for harassing others). As if the current emotes hadn't been enough for them, it's clear what many if not most people would use the doze emote for ^^;

You have to treat the online communities as if they were little kids, because in the end that's how many of them will act. If the company doesn't want people to join FFXIV for the "sexy possibilities", then it's only normal they'll try to protect the game's image *shrugs*.

I personally don't care.

No. We don't have to be treated like little kids.

So they're perfectly willing to ignore all the sexual innuendo (and sometimes, blatant sexual talk) that goes on amongst NPCs, provide an emote system which can be manipulated to do some hilariously obscene things (see a screenshot posted previously in this thread as an example), and generally imply through the story that they're not afraid to shy away from mature themes...

But letting players lay down wherever they want is far too risque.

Yeah, I'm calling bullshit on that. The introduction or not of /doze will have zero bearing on ERP, I can guarantee that. Would we probably get funny-sexy screenshots with folk using the /doze? Likely, but we already get that with all the other emotes in the game. Hell, one of my FC members spends an inordinate amount of time doing the female miqo'te /stretch so she can bury her face in other characters' boobs. This one single emote warrants no more control than any other emote in the game.

Here is how I see things. The game isn't an M rated title. But it does have some adult content that mostly is tongue in cheek. Allow me to clarify:

The Pugilist Guildmaster when you first meet him thinks you are his assistant that he sent off with a proposition to some dancers. He even got excited when the questline led to the forgotten springs because he enjoys watching the girls frolic and giggle as they bathe.

There is also the Blacksmith Guildmaster, who bluntly says to female characters he doesn't really care if they are some wife who cuckheld her husband, or just some adventurer, Blacksmiths are all equals.

And then there's the one fate where we escort the courtesan along Costa Del Sol's beach to her customer. End of that fate, the Male Roegadyn runs her to his house and we see nothing more.

This allows the game to have a T rating right now. And it has adult humor and text, but isn't subjecting you to pornographic imagery. However in my experiences, ERPers who aren't considerate of others, will bluntly put on a spectacle in the middle of crowds.

Square Enix is giving this new emote as part of the housing package, but limiting it to player housing, so as to not give these inconsiderate ERPers more ways to subject other people to their imagery. And at least Square Enix is doing something to address this disgusting display. It is more than can be said for Blizzard who not only ignored the moon guard situation, but decided to subject all their other roleplay servers to it as well.

Me, I find ERP to be disgusting personally, and will never participate in it. But the considerate ones who will take it to private housing are alright. But either way Square Enix is trying to protect their games image. Blaming Square Enix for being forced to take a hard line on people who ERP in the publics eye, is putting the blame on the wrong party. Want to point fingers? Point at the ones who get a kick out of public displays.

Square Enix created a solution, to a problem created by a certain niche in the player community. Maybe if this sort of behavior didn't exist to begin with, the emote would be available to the rest of Eorzea. The problem though does exist. And as long as it exists, then anything to help keep the game from degrading into that steaming pile of crap that is world of warcraft, has my support. That's all I really got to say on this subject now.

I think that any adult theme that the game might imply is easily surpassed by what the community does. As you said, people are even doing those things with normal emotes; even more reason for them to believe that adding the /doze emote will only be worse.

Of course, it'd be great if we could make our characters sleep anywhere. It's especially good for RP scenes of battles where a character faints. But I'm not stupid and I know what that emote will be mostly used for; if this future situation is a problem for Square Enix, then I can understand they don't want that to happen. Because it's going to happen, let's be honest *laughs*. I foresee that people who would use the /doze emote with innocent purposes are a minority.

So, while I won't use it with those purposes, I understand if Square Enix wants to prevent kids from doing that. It's not our fault, but we have to deal with the fact that online games are full of people who do act like kids.

My point was that people who are so against a sleep animation seem to be so scared of ERPers. ERP will happen either way as it is currently going on right now without a sleep or lay down emotion. No reason to keep a valuable emotion away just because you may stumble across two (or three or ten! I'm looking at you Miqo'tes :P) half naked characters laying on the ground or in a bed.

I'm not against the sleep animation at all. In fact I love the animation miqo'te are getting. I just happen to agree with Square Enix's policy to try to keep inappropriate stuff out of the game world, and more into private player housing.

Lord of the Rings Online when it first came out, didn't have housing. And there were instances of finding ERPers in inn rooms and such. Once player housing came out though, the considerate ERPers moved to player housing.

SE's limiting the emote to player housing, shouldn't be viewed as something bad. If anything it is just a bundled extra added in with the player housing area. It's exclusive to player housing as an extra.

But at the same time, you and I both know if this emote was usable anywhere, the inconsiderate ERPers would be using it in public view. So in that regard I do agree with SE's call here. The fact is, they wouldn't need to make this call, if people were considerate of others. Maybe one day in the future the emotes will unlock for anywhere, but right now, erring on the cautious side isn't a bad thing considering how new and how popular ARR is right now.

Not to dash anyone's hopes, but this is what I got off the Official forums just now:

We're glad you guys are excited for the new emote to use in Free Company  Housing beds, and understand many of you want to use it elsewhere as  well. However, the team has decided against the use of this emote in  other places to prevent the taking of not especially appropriate  screenshots. Likewise, the new emote cannot be used on Inn beds because  lying down on that bed logs a player out of the game.

I linked that in my earlier post, Liadan. xP

I DIDN'T SEE IT.

However, apparently the specter of Moon Guard seriously has some people's jimmies rustled.

Honestly, I FEEL THE NEED TO SHARE THIS:

Screenshots are totally what Square needs to worry about.
