Val ate his chocobo because it ran over a certain white-haired woman and possibly ruined his chances at sleeping with her.

Obviously that isn't the case, but Val doesn't really have remorse for it. It was tasty.

He probably wouldn't do well with other animals, either.

Eleni has a snow white chocobo named Mimi who she loves dearly, and the two share quite an inseparable bond. Of course, Eleni would never call her a pet, but a friend. Other than that, she really won't be able to keep anything else due to her life as an adventurer.

William has a carbuncle as a pet that's been with him for a good number of years. It's well behaved, for the most part, but recently it's been a bit of a rebel thanks to the fact that he and his beloved has been spoiling the walking nightlight rotten with a lot of love and affection, however, he still loves the glowing critter, even when it does get a bit unruly.

Well, while Jaques already knows this, I'll post anyway =3

Vaughn adores pets. He has Vakker, his coeurl, which is more a pet than a mount and the two are very attached. He also has one of Vakker's kittens squirreled away with Darian, a baby raptor. Those two are now best friends until they get older and decide the other looks tasty.... Also being the Disney princess that he is, he gains temporary pets while picking fresh herbs in the wilderness. Squirrels, fawns, birds...all at once sometimes. He has also freely volunteered to care for other's pets because Jaques won't really let him have more than the three he knows about.

And, he's always wanted a turtle...

Technically Fohcswys owns a chocobo although she's half terrified of it. Why did she get one in the first place then? Because everyone said it was a smart idea...she really didn't take into account how big a Roe sized chocobo would be. It's a pretty one-sided relationship, she's more likely to run from it than ride it and the giant bird thinks it's a fun game of 'chase'.

Aside from that she owns a tiny rat affectionately called 'Squeak'. Genius, I know. It followed her off of ship one day and has stayed with her ever since.

Jaques has:

A little blue songbird from Vaughn... named Songbird.

Damian the raptor from an old friend that really isn't much of a baby anymore as much as Vaughn continues to baby it. Jaques is training to be a hunting partner much like his coeurl, Bete. Currently he's struggling with it's desire to breath fire on their hunt targets. He'd probably have better luck if he could get out to hunt more consistently.

Bete, his coeurl mount and loyal hunting partner.

And finally he has a... strange little oddity he picked up several moons ago when he still worked as a fill-in chef at the Bismark. A voidal sugarcube that he found inside an absolutely ancient bag of sugar buried in a forgotten corner of the drygoods storeroom. Why does it exist? How does it navigate without any sort of face? Who knows. But it's content to kinda just wander around the Rose. Usually staying close to Jaques. More than once Jaques has used it as an ottoman in the office.

Jaques's view on pets is that he much prefers the ones that can be trained to perform some sort of aiding function. And he grows rather attached to the critters he's trained though he doesn't show it much. And he find the 'babying' of such critters vaguely irritating.

Noxaelius doesn't care for pets and the only one he owns is his chocobo Rinia, who he cared for since she was a baby. He encountered her injured and abandoned out in the wilderness and initially walked past her, not caring if she lived or died, but she kept following him around despite her injuries so he took her home, thinking that it would be useful to have something to ride on anyway.

Unfortunately, he's not very good at chocobo caretaking. He tends to give her too many greens and alcohol to drink because that the only type of drink he owns. Since they live in Mist, she ends up having to drink the trench water (at least it seems clean?) beside the house. He also never takes her out to exercise and just lets her run by herself around the neighborhood, which always earns him a telling-off from the officers.

On a more serious note, I imagine Faye views pets the same way as my grandma: she adores animals, but doesn't have any because they're too messy and they'll "ruin" her house and belongings. :P She also views their dependence as a bit of a nuisance, but if she ever gave having a pet a chance, I think not only would she enjoy their cuteness, but her maternal instincts would kick in and she'd like caring for them. ;-; She would probably have to worry frequently about Val eating any pets, though.

Ugh, no wonder he dumps Caelia that duty! (Pfft, not like this is news to me.. But she doesn't know what her living conditions were previously.) Good thing that she lived on a ranch and knows how to properly care for the non-avian birds.

Amity, her chocobo, has served Caelia as a companion and pet. She raised the chocobo from an egg. Amity was the last present her parents had given Caelia before ther passing. So she cares deeply for her. It was also a sign that her parents trusted Caelia enough that she was ready to help raise the other chocobos on the the ranch. So, I guess we can say Caelia has a good understanding of what it's like to take the responsibility of caring for an animal. If her housemate would allow it.. She would love to take in more animals.

The closest thing L'yhta has to a pet is her chocobo, Shera; she likes to groom him/her (she doesn't know what gender he/she is, and she respects his/her privacy enough to not investigate :) ), take him/her out for rides, and the like. Thankfully, she also has a retainer and fellow Wizards who can look after him/her while she's out adventuring, because she's also quite distractible and would likely forget key things like "food for your chocobo" if someone wasn't reminding her. Of course, a chocobo is capable of acquiring its own food if left to its own devices...

Being aware of her own limitations, in addition to being largely allergic to long-term commitments and responsibilities, L'yhta doesn't have any other pets. I suppose if someone gave her one, she'd love how cute it was, then quickly get bored or annoyed with it. In her tribe's territory, pets were viewed as an unnecessary luxury -- animals were for food or for labor, and that's it.
