  1. 1. How are you going to RP an Au Ra?

    • I'll just make one. I've got free character slots!
    • Killing/MIAin' my character, and Fantasia/Name change into an Au Ra.
    • My character will be ICly transformed through magic, curses or potions. Name and personality won't change.
    • ICly drinking/transforming, but mind will be affected too. Only name will stay the same.
    • My character was an Au Ra from the beginning, just very good at hiding horns. I'll discuss retconning with friends who may have seen them.
    • Eh, I'll stick to my original race for now.

Relative to naming conventions, I just opted to copy Yugiri's; Yugiri means 'Evening Mist', to the best of my knowledge, while obviously her last name is Mistwalker. With that in mind, my Au'ra Raen lady will be known as Yumeko Dreamcatcher.

If this does not remain the case when Heavensward is released, I still hope to play it off as a "coming of age" ninja-thing, traditional to her particular clan.

Also, while I am afraid of butchering the Au'ra by perhaps jumping the gun and seeking role-play as soon as possible, I do have intentions for my character that hopefully allow her to stand on her own two feet, regardless of any additional details or alterations (unless like, super extreme). None of the other races ever completely suited me (I am constantly changing my characters... drastically @_@), so I was terrifically thrilled with their announcement. Yumeko will be a sort of disgraced ninja, which I expect to be a playful twist on the conservative sophistication of the Au'ra Raen. ^_^

Yumeko Dreamcatcher.

This is somewhat similar to one of my name candidates. >.>;

<.< You could call it...

...

...

...

... (Whispers~) Fate .......

Actually, on that note, I was planning for something based off of this:

Wisteria Maiden!

I may still include it in her stuff because it was one of those special first thoughts. But I just couldn't handle the name Fuji. I wanted Yuna but I noticed that was taken. ._. Which doesn't totally mattered, but... *Shrugs*

You could try some variation of Touka, which can be written 藤花 to mean wisteria flower.

I would've definitely preferred that, thank-you! :3 Though... I actually already invested real currency into a name-change, so Yumeko Dreamcatcher is how she shall remain. e_e

It's just as well, I like the sound of it enough to add it to my "potentials" list.

Hehe, feel free to still use something similar to mine! Like you said, you were pondering it also. It's not all that strange for two people to be named the same, or similarly. In every country there's the "popular," "common" names. It'd be the same for this one!

My current character, a Miqote, currently has a Elezan name. I've always loved dragons and dragon-kin in every rpg since forever and hate making alts, so I'll probably be changing over to an Au Ra.

Either way, my character was already adopted by Elezan parents so the name sticks, and since it's likely they would be good with magic, perhaps through their assistance my character uses a glamour on himself to look shorter, make the horns look like ears, and the tale look more catlike, get all Animorphs up in here.

Interestingly enough, reading into how the Raen and Xaela sound..one being entirely more tribal and the other more secluded [if I read that right], and then them giving us Yugiri's name as a standing Raen, my speculation is that the Raen may have more names influenced by similar means.

But the Xaelan may have their influence from tribal and slightly simpler/primative [if you can call it that] connotations and influences. Just my 2 cents.. I've got a name in mind for my fellow. Just trying to wait for the naming guide to reveal itself and see if I can make it work

Looking at the names of the characters in the Ninja quests, the Raen conventions seem to be Japanese First Name + English surname composed of two words (adjective+noun/noun+verber), and somewhat related to the first name's meaning in Japanese. My doubt is: are the surnames decided at birth, and SE just made puns by foreshadowing the characters' nature through them? Or are they sort of "titles", that the Doman gain after achieving/becoming famous for certain things, and possibly affected to changes?

I mean, in the case of Karasu Redbeak, the 'red' is referring to the blood that he has spilled in his betryal to Doma. Obviously, his parents couldn't know he'd do that when he was born, so did he gain the "Redbeak" surname only after doing the evil deed? Who knows.

For now, the tentative name for my Raen will be Aki Rainfall (Aki means "autumn", and autumn is rainy). But I'll be waiting to make sure to know how Doman surnames are gained by lore.

I'm going to stick with what I've got. Honestly, I'm not ready to go through the main scenario again just to get to Heavensward and new classes when I've got a perfectly good, fun character I'm playing now.

It'll be interesting to see if Hyur becomes a minority though!

I think it's good to be tentative, but I remember at the start of 1.0 (before release) myself and plenty of other people were excitedly creating our characters with very little to go by in terms of racial lore and naming conventions.

Particular to Miqo'te, I do know characters who do not adhere to the "tradition" or cultural norms of their respective clans. Having said that, it's been easy enough to justify why those characters have such unusual names! So, I am not too worried.

Though also not disagreeing that waiting is probably best.

I am personally going with the "titles" consideration, in regards to surnames. This is likely easier for people who intend on role-playing someone from a ninja-esque or warrior/military background.

Okay.

There was plenty to go on when 1.0 came out, even in beta, as the naming conventions were definitely present and in use in the game world. They just weren't published. If you ran around and looked at all the NPC names you could easily tell what was consistently "Seawolf" or "Keeper", etc.

People just missed that entirely and did whatever they wanted, then later exclaimed they had nothing to go on, which wasn't true at all.

I mean before the release, we had no real idea. And as a lot of us were too excited to wait, role-playing commenced months before the game actually started. Also, you had to decide on a name before you entered the game - and for some, that just stuck. :3

Anyway, my point was a few mistakes can easily [enough] be justified. How other people intend to name their characters, play their characters, and apply their characters, makes no real difference to me unless I humour them in role-play. So! *Shrugs*

There's something to be said for patience.

Indeed! There's also something to be said about enthusiasm for one's hobby.

But I digress, to each their own. :3
