The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim

Dragon Age: Origins

Dragon Age 2

Dragon Age: Inquisition

Dragons Dogma

Two Worlds

I've been meaning to try Dragon's Dogma. I love that you can't fast travel and you must suffer the dangerous wilderness, especially at night. That sounds really cool.

Let's see...

Persona 4 (haven't played 3)

Shin Megami Tensei 3: Nocturne

Shin Megami Tensei 4

Kingdom Hearts

The World ends with You

Chrono Trigger (still need to finish it! T^T)

The Last Story (this is an absolute gem on the Wii)

Ohhh right Xenogears and Wild Arms! D: Suikoden was more of a "duh" moment since others had mentioned before me.

I really enjoy a lot of RPGs but I will still say that I absolutely love, love, love Chrono Trigger and Earthbound.

Those two are forever in my heart type of loves.

I'm sure there are other RPGs I've really enjoyed but I can't quite name them all. There's been a few PSP games that I also enjoyed. Nintendo DS...

Legend of Heroes..

AHHHH GOLDEN SUN HOW COULD I FORGET YOU

Legend of Dragoon is not only the game that got me into JRPGs...

It's the game I have to thank for even making me a gamer.

Until I came across a demo for it (back when demo collection disks from Toys R Us were a thing), I had always considered video games to be dumb time-wasters for kids that I'd eventually grow out of. But then I encountered LoD... 4 delicious disks with 20 hours' worth of content each. Man, what a fucking ride. It was like... the Wheel of Time of JRPGs.

I will never, ever, EVER forget that game.

Now that my fangirl explosion is done, some others:

Wild ARMs (1, 3, and 5 are my favorites)

Persona (3 and 4)

Star Ocean (3 and 4... I don't care what people say about the plot/terrible dub, I enjoyed The Last Hope)

Eternal Sonata (beautiful game)

The World Ends With You (a DS gem)

Kingdom Hearts (1, 2, and Chain of Memories... Don't care for the other three spin-offs)

Chrono Trigger (should be self-explanatory)

Golden Sun (1 & 2, GBA gems... don't care for the DS one)

Honorable Mentions:

Lost Odyssey -- SURPRISINGLY good (and DEPRESSING) story undermined by a really sluggish first half, and a combat system some may dislike

Drakengard/Drag-On Dragoon 3 and Nier (either version) -- Okay, I confess. I haven't played either of these. The gameplay... leaves much to be desired in either, imo. But I adore their plots, characters, and soundtracks. The world building and composition was amazing in both of them.

Oh man, if you like slightly more old school rpgs that don't hold your hand thru the game, you will not be disappointed! Although it's not as hard as Dark Souls, from what I hear.

I really loved a lot of the other ones mentioned in this thread (Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, etc.), but I think my favorite RPG series is still Suikoden. Heck, I based my entire LS concept around it (partially!) ;)

Square and Enix have a lot of classic titles just sort of floundering about. FFVII: Crisis Core and Valkyrie Profile have yet to see a digital release, which is terrible. I want to play these on my Vita, especially the latter.

Illusion of Gaia on the SNES was one of my all-time favorite action RPGs, but Enix hasn't seen fit to release it again in any form since. Same with its predecessor, Soul Blazer.

Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door is another favorite. Colorful, beautiful even by today's standards, with plenty of humor and pirate bob-ombs.

Square's Super Mario RPG was pretty rockin' for its time, but I personally feel TTYD surpassed it in every way.

Finally, I'm glad to see the love for Lost Odyssey in the thread, but sometimes I think I'm the only one who actually liked Blue Dragon. It had a ton of charm, Akira Toriyama-designed characters, and a job-change system that reminded me in some ways of Dragon Quest's. It was one of the first RPGs brought to the 360 and I think it's still the best looking one on the system.

Also, nothing can beat the hilarity of its boss battle song, written by Nobuo Uematsu and sung by Ian Gillan from Deep Purple. An unholy partnership if ever there was one.

My current favorite RPG's are Square Enix's 'The Last Remnant' and any Bethesda game. (IE:TES or Fallout)

Give me an MMO with guns, warzones, tanks and sci-fi ships with 500+ people fighting all at once and that involves strategy and cunning to win and I will be the happiest MOFO alive.

Also looking forward to Star Citizen. I want 360 degree dog fights in space with the Oculus rift.  @__@

I cut my teeth on Dragon Warrior and Ultima: Exodus on the NES. I've dabbled a lot with RPGs and JRPGs but my completion rate is pretty low; Once you start getting into flat-out-RNG fights I lose my patience. I've always loved and hated SMT for that reason. My first experience with it was Revelations: The Demon Slayer on the Game Boy Color and I've spent a lot of time with Nocturne and Strange Journey, but instant-kill attacks you have to pray never land always turn me off of the end game there.

In terms of time-invested, I've got to say Morrowind was the game that ate me the most. Another game I've never "finished" I explored the hell out of that game, cheesily roleplaying through the whole thing myself and managing to uncover nearly every treasure without a guide or any sort of help. It stands out as one of my favorite "Get lost in the world" examples and will likely never be topped.

My first RPGs were Dragon Warrior and the original Final Fantasy, actually. Oh, and gold cartridge Zelda, if that counts.

I only mentioned Breath of Fire as one of my particular favorite non-Final Fantasy series, but I've played quite a few. Chrono Trigger/Cross, Earthbound, Super Mario RPG, Secret/Legend of Mana, Wild ARMs... actually, almost all of the "older" RPGs that have been mentioned so far in the thread. It started tapering off around... Morrowind, I think. I think MMOs started eating into my "normal RPG" time.

Heck, the original Tactics Ogre: LUCT for the PSX was a personal favorite singular RPG game (which led to me getting the PSP remake), as was Shining Force II. But I also tried my hand a couple lesser known titles like the horribly translated Robotrek (I even did a gimmick LP of it a while back), Chrysalis, and Legacy of the Wizard.

Oh, and Harvest Moon is considered an RPG, too. So that's one a bunch could add to their lists.

This... is me. I -love- lots of games but I've actually only seen the credits for very few of them.

Games/Series I really enjoyed and have mentioned liking:

Golden Sun

Tales

Suikoden

Wild Arms

Mother Series

Star Ocean

Bahamut Lagoon

Legend of Heroes

Persona

Dragon Quest Monsters

Xenogears

Chrono Trigger

Chrono Cross

Breath of Fire

Fire Emblem

Legend of Zelda

Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories

Mana Series

Legend of Dragoon

I'll stop there.

I've only finished: Chrono Trigger, Bahamut Lagoon (up to ReBirth cause fuck default decks), Secret of Mana, ONE of the Breath of Fire SNES games, Earthbound, Mother 3, one of the GBC Dragon Quest/Warriors Monsters, First Golden Sun, Suikoden Tierkreis. Oh and cause it was mentioned: Shining Force remake

I will quietly admit that the advent of the Let's Play has killed a lot of my drive to play a game unless it looks REALLY GOOD (Bastion and Revengeance being a couple examples of this). The Disgaea series, for example, is one that I tried initially... and then just went and looked up LPs for the story because I wasn't going to grind the same map for three hours to get Laharl to level 900. I picked up both the original Disgaea and Disgaea 3 on their release dates and never finished either of them.

The most important part of an RPG, I think, is the story. And, if presented properly, you can enjoy it just as much as an LP as you could playing it yourself. Better, even, if it's horribly grindy or has clunky controls/mechanics. It's how I experienced NieR, for example. WONDERFUL story, very touching moments, but laced with Cavia hatred.

... You just have to find LPers that aren't obnoxious to watch/read/listen to.

Bastion is one of my favorite games ever and the first game I point to if the "are games art?" topic comes up. Hell, I voiced my alt after Ruks because holy shit, he makes the game what it is.

Also, Chip Cheezum's LP of MGR made me buy the game when it came out on Steam, hands-down.

Damn, I knew I was forgetting something. Definitely add Disgaea to my list. I stopped caring for the series after Disgaea 2 because I don't like the characters or plotlines of later installments. (I personally ignore D2 because it was just... It was so lackluster and kind of tacky. It felt more like a non-canonical spin-off than a proper sequel. Ugh.)

I did also really enjoy the Rune Factory games in the Harvest Moon series. I didn't play 3 because I didn't like the characters all that much... and I skipped 4 because I didn't own a 3DS at the time (I can remedy that now that I have one). But man, did I enjoy 1 and 2!

God Eater is another I'll tack on. Take Monster Hunter, make combat much faster paced, put it in a post-apocalyptic setting, and make it heavily story-focused. That's GE is a nutshell.

I'm an older gamer so Chrono Trigger and Earthbound rank in the top slots for favorite rpg.

But I also like Okage: Shadow King. It was a very Tim burtonesqe style to it. The only mechanic I didn't like was that if Ari died in battle it was an instant game over. But the humor was awesome with several different romance lines (ala ff7) and you weren't the silent protagonist. You had responses to choose from and generally 2 of the three were guaranteed to piss someone off and the third normally pissed everyone off.

Back on PS1, I was obsessed with all the RPGs Working Designs and Atlus brought over.. but these three were like my Holy Trinity of Underrated RPGs.

Alundra is more of a Zelda-like, and Brigandine is an SRPG similar in gameplay to Fire Emblem, but they count!

Vanguard Bandits is one my brother had. I enjoyed what I played of it, until I got to the end and found I hadn't raised my reputation with certain key members of my squad and got slaughtered, IIRC. It just soured me on playing it any further. I'll have to revisit it sometime. It -is- downloadable on PSN now.
