The best advice I can give is to look up Empress Quistis when she's online. I THINK she still runs the more active Hunt LS.

balmung Returned player looking for friends!
Amelia replied to Yarehasu's topic in Chronicled Connections
Welcome back! I've just returned after not having internet for a month myself... and haven't actually RP'd consistently in over a year. I've been looking to change that and would welcome any new faces on the journey. I'm typically on: Seri Okara -or- Menelluin Camda Both are Keepers, sooo... hahaha. I guess I like Keepers. I hope to see any/all of you in game soon! -
I definitely recommend this event to others and urge you to sign up for the next one that posts. This was a lot of fun, and great to get our characters out there. Gave us a good reason to interact and mingle with others before and after the fight that we would otherwise not have had the chance to meet, and we had a cool mix of characters. Thank you, Saraj for putting this together! I look forward to future hunts!

Well, if you can't get anyone else and end up nixing the class restrictions, Vann and Ami can go. Amelia Almandine - 60 WHM Vallon Jennessy - 60 DRG Let us know! If you don't get any takers before then, we'll jump in. If you find another DPS and healer to fill the spots that won't go against the class restrictions, then that's fine too.

I tend to go with the phrase: "Jack of all trades, master of none". As Wikipedia puts it, the phrase "is a figure of speech used in reference to a person that is competent with many skills, but spends too much time learning each new skill that he/she can not become a master in any particular one." Realistically, a normal person can have more than one skill. They can also be exceptional at more than one skill. Such as a painter who also has the voice of an angel. But you usually cannot be a master of everything, let alone more than a couple things, unless you've lived a lengthy life that would have the time to master more than a few arts. So using someone else's example; if your character is 16 years old and taking up several different skills, where would they have the time to master any of them, compared to someone in their 40's or 50's or even 60's?

I really don't understand what's so great about 8 and 16 for females. 8 looks like some of the hair already in the game... and that sausage braid on 16 is going to clip EVERYTHING. It'll clip tiara head pieces and the braid on the shoulder will clip most chest pieces. So many of the female entries look the damn same... But 17 has my vote. /disappointed

The lore and battle teams have an unfortunate history of coming into conflict in XIV -- the moving of elemental offensive magic to Thaumaturgy from Conjury is one such example that they've admitted to. I think it's safe to say that the battle team will sometimes say, "These are WHM Job skills because they'd be OP if they could be cross-classed or available to CNJ," and then the lore team says, "Welp, time to sweep that under the rug." I'm a big supporter of "if the game says you can, you should be able to do so," which is why I advocate different approaches to using Succor or, indeed, using spells that the game classifies as Succor in a way that makes them not Succor. If your character's a skilled conjuror, surely they've created some spells of their own, perhaps some to keep people in the fight with less effort (Regen)? That big explosion of light you do (Holy)? Why, that's just a lightning-aspected spell (since we know that conjurers, per lore, have access to elemental magic). On the black mage side, that's not the "Flare" of the War of the Magi, it's just a customized, augmented fire spell. To paraphrase a common (and silly, when you think about it) saying, when the lore team closes a door, they open a window. XIV really doesn't ban much of anything, and even when it bans one approach, others still exist, ready to be employed by the enterprising RPer. This is the perfect point. I personally believe that SE keeps the lore really loosely defined to keep one of the big visions behind at least the original final fantasy alive. The whole the player being in control of the story, though this could only be done to an extent since there still needs to be some sort of story for the player to follow. They want the player to have an extent of control over what goes on in the game. Though it is much harder to accomplish in a mmo setting I still think they try their best to stick with it. Give the player enough information to be able to create a character off of. Though more on topic there is a good chance of some people who would try to harass you about breaking the lore, since some people tend to take anything a character says about themselves as what their character is saying is 100% true. They get so caught up in telling people off about how they are a lore breaker they don't really take the time to think that there are other factors contributing to why they are claiming that point. If it's something your character would do, go for it. Hopefully you find a lot of gullible people to believe her. I mean S'imba is at least gullible enough to fall for most anything someone claims to be. Well, again. Ami would never just outright call herself a White Mage. It's plainly what I call her, because that's what I associate her with. Fits the character. I don't think she ever gives herself a title as such other than 'a gifted healer.' Perhaps if this helps, your character Ami is of the White Mage archetype, but not the class/job. Your character fits the mold by OOC description, but since she never calls herself that ICly this type of think would seem to apply in my head. My own character is a similar case. Tristram's archetype is easily "woodsman" or "ranger", but when IC the best representation is botanist. ICly he would never call himself a botanist nor is he a member of that guild, but class works of his IC appearance most of the time. I've had the viewpoint of a disconnect of roleplay vs. mechanics, so archetypes fit better into this sort of descriptive thing for myself. At the end of the day though, we all handle the lore and/or mechanics with some creative license to get our characters where we want them to be. And it's your character, no one can take that from you. Those that enjoy roleplaying with your character as well as those that discover they enjoy roleplaying will do so. Those what don't, well not really that big of thing if they don't RP with you ... they aren't there to be part of your characters story, are they? P.S. - I think potato sacks are hawt, but I have a thing for hobos. Y'know...? You actually just made me feel WORLDS better. Thank you. :3

Wait! Come back! There's something you brought up that could be an excellent and potentially dangerous topic of discussion: What is it about having the title of White Mage that makes it more appealing than say, a Conjuror, Arcanist, Astrologian or Scholar? Naturally, we know that White Mage is a big-name job within the Final Fantasy series. But that's a concept that widens the scope of discussion beyond just FFXIV. -mutters softly- Conjurers don't get the cool classic robes. They get shapeless potato sacks. I guess being a long time fan of FF9, I always wanted to make a WHM/SMN combo. It's no secret that Amelia is heavily based off of Dagger. So naturally the role of a WHM and SMN was very appealing to me. But you're right. It is really the title I'm being a baby about. I get bristly sometimes when I'm told "No, you can't do that because of lore" when mechanically, I WORKED for that damn title. I healed that damn tree with my own blood and sweat... leaving it a really messed up looking and smelling tree in the Black Shroud, but DAMN that quest was hard at the time! Would being a conjurer instead of White Mage change Amelia's story? No. Mainly because I don't really have her walking around calling herself that. Again, it's just something I associate her with. I guess the most she'd ever say is call some of her abilities 'White Magic.' I don't really want to make people mad by bending or breaking lore, but telling someone that they can't ICly be something that they can actually be in the game just seems... I dunno. There's a word for it that escapes me. Unfair-ish? Again, it's not something I want because I want my character to be a special snowflake... but because it's something that just feels like it really fits. I know that thinking and feeling this way is wrong as a Role-player... and I know a lot of people disagree. For that I apologize.
-
-deep sigh- Oh well... I guess at the very least, Amelia doesn't ICly CALL herself that... I just do. Kind of sucks... I don't want to be a special snowflake, I just wanna be a damn White Mage... I guess as long as I just keep continuing to play her ICly as a gifted healer no one will notice my sin and shame... -slinks off to lurk again for several months-
-
I might just be lore-stupid... but I thought that in and through ARR, a lot of those job classes were actually making a comeback. I can't really say for BLM as I don't know much about the story, but for WHM, the Padjals are bringin' WHM back like Justin Timberlake, as far as I can tell. Am I wrong for making my character a White Mage ICly because I assume I wouldn't be the ONLY one to learn under the Padjals?

Ooooo... How far along in the game is it? I'm still level 50 and have barely started in Heavensward. I've Fantasia'd a character into an Au Ra, and I guess I'm just wondering RP-wise how to craft a story around her in regards to Ishgard. ((Worst case scenario, you could always explain spoilery things via PM...))
-
The search button failed me, so forgive me if there's already a thread discussing this. In fact, if there is, link me to it because I'm very curious. How would Ishgardians react to an Au Ra in their midst? Even if they aren't "dragon people" they're still sporting the look pretty heavily. I know that the people of Ishgard are typically unfriendly towards ANY newcomer, but I would think an Au Ra would receive worse treatment due to the war, wouldn't you?

This! I agree with this! This is the precise reason why I am more of a lurker than forum poster these days. I've been burnt back in WoW where there is more solid lore than (personally) I find FFXIV to even have. I find the lore battles exhausting- particularly the Miqo'te ones. I guess I've been looking in all the wrong places for FFXIV lore, but I've found much of it aside from the main storyline from 1.0 to 2.0 to be vague and oft times contradicting. Others and myself certainly shouldn't feel guilty or afraid to create a character because they're worried that they won't meet someone's skewed standard. To say that you are playing a character that happens to be X race and therefore expected to act a certain way is enough to ruffle my feathers. That's like saying: "Amelia. You're from Northern Minnesota, so that means that you're going to sound like you came out of the movie 'Fargo' and be overly polite, reserved and mild-mannered." (ie: "Minnesota Nice.") There are threads of lore that say Seekers don't really do much of the tribal life anymore and many have moved into the larger cities. Other threads of lore will inform you that tribal culture is still very much a major and relevant part of what a Miqo'te even is. To say that most Miqo'te characters that one may run into are simply 'Hyur in cat ears and a tail' hardly seems fair. I agree where others have stated that such things can be said about each and every race in this game. Why push players and their characters into stereotypes? And how much about that character do you REALLY know about? Did you just RP with them for two minutes and call it a day? Are YOU really just taking them at some face value so you can smugly categorize them into some pile of unworthy RPers? Reading over this now, I notice that this sounds pretty... irritable. I guess it probably is mainly because this sort of thing gets under my skin in FFXIV. I swear. Whenever it comes to lore in this game, I'm constantly getting that over-anxious feeling that I didn't finish my homework or study as much as the next person for the big exam coming up. Starting to have college finals flashback... -shudders- All those long nights...

Well... quest text always has tiny differences from character to character. They'll point out your name, race and gender, and in some cases give you extra flavour text if you were part of 1.0. Maybe they'll just add slightly different flavour text if you're an Au Ra. Maybe most of their presence will feel like when you're the outsider in Gridania. Most people were pretty hostile toward you upon your arrival, but after proving yourself they slowly came around. So maybe they'll go through the exact same story questline, but people will be shits to them more because of their race. The Coerthas questline in particular would be painful. The change wouldn't be GIGANTIC, but think of what your character would have gone through versus any other race. Think of the fuel it would add to your RP- constantly being treated bitterly when you're doing the EXACT same things to help Eorzea as the other Adventurers.

AAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!! That's so beautiful!!! #toocute #foamsatmouth #muppetflail

I thought I read somewhere that most Miqo'te, both Seekers and Keepers, weren't particularily tribal anymore, and that way was thought to be 'old hat.'
-
This actually fills me with hope because I was wondering if it would be silly if I started RPing an Au Ra early. Either by rolling a Miqo'te (just pretend the tail's under the robes and not there) or Hyur who ALWAYS stays covered in robes/masks (a la Yugiri), or maybe saying they glamoured themselves into one or the other somehow. I'd just stay vague/quiet on their backstory and then off I'd go. Still debating on if I'll do this or not... As for the Au Ra character itself, I can really only draft up personality bits since we don't have the lore yet. I'm thinking I might go for a stoic sort. I can see her being very curt. Far from emotionless, she's just not one for letting feelings interfere with reasoning. Hmm... There's a robe with mask combo that drops from a dungeon... and the Miqo'te actually have a tail that's shaped like a rat's tail. So this could be doable. Heck. I might do it.
-
Well... I have a level 50 Dragoon/33 Warrior who goes by my regular online handle: Henna Lang. I never really figured out what kind of character she was going to be for RP purposes, so she's pretty much a blank slate. She'll be turned into an Au Ra with the unused Phantasia in her inventory, and I'll also purchase a name change for her. I'm hoping the naming conventions aren't... to tight around the Au Ra... I'm pretty set on a name already. I would assume they wouldn't have crazy and extremely different naming conventions since they're essentially a crossbreed, right? Like... Elezen and Hyur-ish names, right? The backstory of the race IS a dragon and Elezen or Hyur gettin' down in funky town, riiiight? Oh well. Time will tell.

Hahaha... need to book a trip to the dentist now to fix all those cavities?

Yeah, I'd heard about that. I plan on FRAPSing my ceremony when we finally get to do it (in a few months from now...)

As another outside observer, based on your replies to this very thread as well as others I do believe this is kind of self-inflicted. Some posts in this thread were less than nice. Others were very well-thought out, sensitive and genuinely trying to give you advice for your struggles. Your first reaction is to instead of thanking the people who went out of their way to try sending you these messages, was to continue your trend of... honestly abrasive behavior? Instead of following the good advice to pay attention to the good and not the bad, you comment on the people that once again made you angry instead of those trying to help you. I'm going to echo just about every single decent response in this thread and suggest that you look inward to meet these issues halfway. As someone who only has your forum posts to go by for reputation, you haven't been making a good first impression. I'm sorry if this offends, but I think enough is enough. There's a high chance that I'll now be on the receiving end of your angry words as well, and you'll have pushed yet another person away who might have befriended you. And it will be my fault for saying these words to you and making you the victim again, won't it?
