1. Ypu'll always see greifing in the traditional sense, regardless of server. Here was us on 1.0, on Besaid, minding our own business and roleplaying and the first day we were griefed by some guy who said RP was gay. That's gonna happen everywhere. But SA was smart. On Aion they stole the names of people on their server, and stole their guild names, holding them for ransom. Technically not against any rules. You just weren't fast enough. On WoW SA created an "RP" guild called the Freelance Police, staying completely in character, as police officers, they went to high traffic RP events and... you can probably guess how they messed that up. They even had people on that server convinced they ERP'd, all the the laughs. GoonSquad, another WoW guild and the biggest one at around 1000 members, did a lot of greifing, so much so WoW devs had to change some of the code itself to keep them from doing any further damage (For instance: they once held the Southshore Griffon master hostage for 48 hours. You cannot do this anymore because of them ) I don't want to get into what they did on EvE. None of it against any kind of rules. And SA is considered small fried compared to Reddit and 4chan. Of course, there are people on SA who want to roleplay, I'm on there after all, but most of them want to cause havoc and have fun. (Luckily for you, Goons are rolling on Excalibur )
2. It's cool, sometimes RPing can be especially frustrating. We've all had bad experiences (My guild has the RULE OF SEVEN based on a particularly bad event). There are a lot of times I want to vent my frustration, sometimes ya just need to do that.
3. Or the sadder possibility for Gilgamesh: No city at all. Gilgamesh is a gamble to get where Balmung all ready is. Kind of the wild west of servers. That excites some people, and makes others feel tired
4. The only reason I use them is it because it makes it easier to explain the guild as a whole than typing out a paragraph every time. They can just look up Chaotic Good on TV tropes or whatever and get a general idea. It gets very hard to constantly go "We help Eorzea." "So your good?" "Well, if saving Eorzea meant throwing 100 babies in a Volcano, we would probably do that." "So your bad?" "Well..." forever and ever and ever ahem. I'm still not a hundred percent sure I have the right idea on our own guild recruitment thread... it's a process (Thanks for liking the theme, I wasn't sure how it would go over generally)
5. Generally any community that tends to stick to itself on any server can be just fine. I ran an RP guild for YEARS of the Quetzalcoatl in FFXI and did just fine. Anyone can do it. It's when you want to turn the server into something it becomes... mucky. Everyone knows Balmung is known for 2 things: RP and Endgame. Both sides of that coin are now used to each other and Balmung being seen as the "Unofficial RP server" isn't even an issue to most non-RPers on Balmung. It just kind of is and they're used to it by now. Gilgamesh has yet to go threw those growing pains so I honestly can'y say how it will do. I hope it does well, but there is also a chance it won't. Though, I've been on the ground floor of three RP communities (Two going to "Unofficial RP servers") and those growing pains weren't too hard to get through. I worry about Gilgamesh because of the Reddit and 4chan thing, mostly because I worry they are taking Reddit and 4chan too lightly (I rolled with Something Awful in a few games, and, while they are lower population than the other two, they have the same trolling tendencies. And I know what SA did. They trolled smart. They trolled in a way they couldn't even get in trouble for. I got stories ) but at the end of the day I think Gilgamesh will be fine It really is dependent on what you want to do. Want to go to an established city? Balmung. Want to try and build a city? Gilgamesh.
6. My Fiance's main alt is a bad guy so I rolled his sister and plan on playing her as a villain. I've only played a villain once before (Generally I toe the line at Anti-hero) and I'm not sure how it will go. I find villains really, really hard to do correctly. You make them too subtle and they aren't really villains, make them to overt and you got a cartoon on your hands. Also Villains aren't forever. You can just be a bad guy 3 years from now without some kind of consequence. Constantly getting away with stuff would just be... wrong and weird and, at the end of the day, boring. Killing them off when their villainy is at their worst seems like the proper thing to do, but that really only works in books when you have control of every character, not just the one. You don't want to kill off the one! So then what? Jail? Redemption? I'm having a bit of an issue here, but I really like playing the villain. She was fun, but ultimately ended up dead and became a Death Knight.
7. My entire guild in 1.0 (And TOR) was based on thievery. We were an underground society that.. uh.. commandeered artifacts, weapons, information from old caves, ruins... people's houses... in order to supply them to ourselves. Some of our ranks had noble goals, they were looking for past artifacts that were stolen from their order and they were... stealing them back. Some of us just wanted the money the thing could bring. Currently, we are a guild that is looking for power by any means necessary in order to protect Eorzea from another Calamity. Sounds pretty noble, but we actually do mean by any means necessary. Lying, cheating, stealing... we aren't above what is needed to be done to make sure Garlemald doesn't get a one up on us and that we can stand our ground against all the Bahamuts. We do not work with the Grand Companies, or in any official capacity and fully expect people to see us as wrong on the outside looking in. We are Chaotic Good We do not consider ourselves villains. Come at me, brah
8. Lum (New member of the Nightblades) and Daej (My alt) as ghostbusters. Thw two are convinced the NB HQ is haunted.
9. It's a common misconception there won't be any trailblazing on Balmung. There are going to be much more new people on that server than Legacy, there will be a LOT of trailblazing. My guild is planning on being one of them and out of the 40 people signed up... 3 are legacy.
10. If I'm going to use something in my backstory that has no outright lore, I try to be as vague as possible so I don't have to do too much retconning later. For instance: Armi was a priestess for Nymeia, she lived in temple of sorts with other priestesses, and will be leaving the temple officially once launch/Phase 4 hits as she is kind of mad at the Gods or whatever. There's not really a lot of lore that says this kind of thing is even in the game. So the temple is somewhere in someplace (She'll usually answer "Oh you know.. outside of Gridania somewhere") and has a "few" people living there. No specific numbers, no specific anything. If it comes out there's no official preisthoods or anything, then it was just a small faction of dedicated worshipers who took her in. I don't have them heavily ingrained in the lore churches just in case. I made it vague, but still completely plausible and, somehow, making it vague makes it more plausible, since it's from Armi's point of view and she doesn't know everything about the church. On your specific question, Unless it states in the lore that's what it is, you'll never get a consensus on whatever "it" is does. Ever. Look at the Duskwight thread, while everyone is happily collaborating, everyone has come up with different ideas of the tribes since their is no lore. It was an easy fix to say Tribes do different things and they just continued talking about it. The Hipperion thread is doing the same thing, coming up with rules for their subset of their tribe but not expecting anyone else to follow those rules. It's not really cool RP wise to make up lore about canon things and expect the rest of the community to treat it as fact. So, no one does it. If you're unsure about something, but need to discuss it for whatever reason, keep it as vague as possible until confirmed. That's really it.
11. My characters!: Loki (My main),always so pretty: Armi (My secondary main) quite cute: others: Daej, my main man: A'shaia - my sexy Miqote Langli - my cuter Miqote Atty (Full name not decided yet) - My blind Duskwight. I have two more I'm still finalizing their looks though As your number one fan, keep the red hair please. K thanks.
12. We're solving the Primal problem with a plot hand-waving of sorts. The eventual plan is for our Alchemists to find a potion that will help us resist the Primals. We have a pretty big Alchemist/Engineers subplot in the Night Blades right now, so it works for us. This is going to be a long process, one that is going to take till we're actually doing the primals OOCly, so a couple months as most of us don't have level 50's. Since we actually do plan on having a plot line where we try to control the Primal's power (And weaving the roaming Primals into our storyline) we had to come up with something. As for the Blades (Of Night, as there is a blades above me ) we were originally the Crimson Blades, a secret organization in Eorzea that was about getting artifacts and riches, named after the long since lost "Crimson Blade". The Crimson Blades and their members were completely and utterly decimated in the Calamity. There just wasn't anything left. Ellion comes out of the rift and, after finding out the fate of his old organization, realizes that the Crimson Blades were going after the wrong thing, the only true wealth in the world is POWER. Riches didn't do shit to stop the Calamity, but POWER.. that will do something. So he finds old members of the Blades, renames it the Night Blades to better reflect the new goals. Those who skipped time were pretty easy sells. There are two characters from the old Blades (That Ellion knows about) who didn't skip time though; Stanzie and Daej. These two salvaged what they could from the CB HQ and made a pretty good living off of the money they made and the Apothecary shop Stanzie runs. They also managed to save a few artifacts and things, but most of it was gone. They had to be convinced to join and convinced they knew who Ellion was. And that's how we did it.
13. I'm just gonna post what I did in the character media thread, with some new stuff to explain their last names, it pretty much explains why I named them as such (Warning, loooonngg) Loki Aethertide (THAT is a scan of a print out of a drawing I did on MSpaint like 10 years ago. OLD SCHOOL.) Loki in FFXIV is a version of my original character "Loki" from a table top game that me and Ellion made called "Unizen" (He did all the system, I did all the story). The game is about how humans evolved in a different universe after Earth poofed out of existence. Loki's race was one of nomads that didn't live on planets and instead settled on "Satellite Cities" (Cities made on asteroids) or just flew around on ships. They tended to be scavengers or pirates and tended to have lots of prosthetic limbs due to the volatile nature of their lives. Her race also had nicknames that they used to outsiders and "True names" they used with their clan and people they were close to. Loki's nickname was obviously Loki - named by her father's best friend who was into the study of mythology. She was created about 10 years or so ago and I was perfectly fine with using the name till the Avengers movie came out . Now it's SHAMEFUL. What I took from her is her name (And the fact it's a nickname, Loki is not her real name in FFXIV either and was given to her when the Crimson Blades - our old guild - handed out nicknames. We said it was because she was "Low Key" BA DUM CHA), the fact she has a fake leg, and her pirate-y lifestyle also came from U-Loki. U-Loki is almost like Loki in FFXIV - Flirty, A finder of trouble, a LOVER of trouble, Logical, etc etc. The differences are U-Loki has rage issues and is a racist (against other Unizen races), while FFXIV Loki has neither of these. I didn't think the rage translated over to FFXIV very well and I was worried how people OOCly would react to a racist, so I took them out. There's also a lot of differences between the two that come from roleplaying them in two different universes with two different sets of people that I can't really explain, but as roleplayers yourself you probably get it. LAST NAME: Aethertide came from Armi in World of Warcraft (Her being a Blood Elf) I used it when I realized that Loki going from a Midlander to a Highander meant her last name wouldn't work anymore (Mirandette) and me and Ellion made a joke that Highlander last names sounded like BloodElf last names. Sure made finding a new last name easier. Armi Alliando Like I said above, Armi was first rolled in FFXI. I explained how she was there, but over time she evolved... honestly I'm still working out her kinks. Because I feel she isn't perfect in any game I roll her in, I keep rolling her to see if I can get her right. Sort of like RP Reincarnation. The game she is perfect in, she'll probably stay in. That's kind of made Armi synonymous with ME though and people have just ended up calling me Armi as a nickname, regardless of who I play as my main. I'll just go down the list and what I took from her from each game. World of Warcraft: Armi was a Blood Elf who was against Kael'thas Sunstrider before it was revealed he was actually evil and not awesome like all the Blood Elves thought. Armi was a diplomat of sorts and worked closely with the Draenei, eventually falling in love with one of them. She was funny and outgoing - very different from her FFXI persona - and strongwilled. I took the funny, smiley part of her from this version. I actually think this version was closest to perfect, but she had lost the Self Sacrificing side of her here and I didn't like that. Aion: I kept the nice, classy side of her and added the witty side to her, then added BACK the Martyr Complex to this incarnation. Problem was, every character in Aion was basically a Mary Sue by default (It was canon you were immortal, one of the "chosen", had huge angel wings, had a special title no one else had but you, and were stated as being demi-gods) so being "Self sacrificing" meant very little. To get around this, I made Armi hate her status as a demi god and try to go out and kill herself every time she was in battle - which she was A LOT since I PvPed all the time. If she was injured, she intentionally didn't heal herself, as some kind of reminder she was once human. This worked... with varying degrees of success. The witty, sweet side of her ended up romancing a Daeva named Siben, and the weird dark side of her had her romance a one named Lloire. Honestly I felt like the Suicidal part of her started to take over her whole personality a fair bit so when I got hacked I just quit the game. lol. SW:TOR: I kind of liked the fact Armi was darker in Aion, but didn't want to go down the suicidal thing again, so in TOR I made her a Dark Sided Jedi. She was a good person who didn't believe in the Jedi code, but was completely against the Sith. BUT because the Jedi code leaves little for people like her, the Jedi branded her as dark sided and kept trying to get her back to the fold to "get her back to the light." Armi worked closely with the Republic and was generally a good person, but because of that one thing (Not being a Jedi, really) she was considered almost a villain in the game. Many a character tried to preach how evil she was and how dark sided she was for not following the Jedi code, meanwhile she was helping the Republic as much as they were in regards to getting rid of the Sith. In FFXIV I went back to before Aion a bit, Armi is hopeful and jubilant, smart and witty, kind and sincere, though she isn't looking to kill herself for a greater cause (Anymore *ahem*) she still has that self sacrificing nature of wanting to save people, even if it risks herself. She wants everything to be okay and wants to push people to be okay. BUT, taking from Aion and SW:TOR, as a former priestess of Nymeia she's angry at what happened with the Calamity. She can't justify what happened there as "The Gods' Will" and her entire belief system is spiraling away from her, deep down inside she's as lost and confused as those she wants to help. I think I may have gotten the right mix of Light and Dark in this incarnation... we'll have to see though. LAST NAME: Alliando comes from FFXI, her first incarnation had the last name "Alliando" and I always use the surname as a place holder while betaing different games till I find a new last name more lore appropriate. In WoW she was Armi Aethertide, in SWTOR she was Armi Veredon, In Aion she was Armi (Asmodians don't have last names unless they are noble), etc, etc. While betaing FFXIV I used Armi Alliando during Phase 2 and Ellion convinced me to just stick with the last name since that's what her name was in FFXI. And there you go.
14. The biggest confirmation it was a bug was that it was accepted as a big in the beta forums, though the devs never came in and said "Yeah it's a bug" As for the topics: Coming into ARR after playing 1.0 for a very short time makes it really easy for me and my guildies to just pretend Male Miqote and the Female Roe's and Highlanders were always there - a few of us are even retconning our characters to those races. We're just kind pretending that we weren't friends with a lot of them for whatever reason and now we'll be seeing more. On Foggy Memory Syndrome: My guild is going right with the canon on this, that everyone who knew the WoL lost their memories. They didn't lose the memories of situations, or the memories of familiarity, but they lost the memories of that person specifically. Our resident "I don't remember shit" character Stanzie knew everyone in 1.0 and was left behind, meaning she knows no one now. She remembers things that happened and she remembered situations, but she doesn't remember the person they were attached too. She knows something is wrong with her memory, but after five years she figures it doesn't much matter. We recently started roleplaying again and the only way Stanzie even beleives Loki and Siben (Her closest friends, Siben was her best friend) are who they say they are is because she has a notebook with their names attached to memories she had and they proved they are who they said they are. She has really familiar feelings with the two, especially Siben, which makes her uncomfortable since at the same time he feels like a stranger. We're playing at as the people's marks on history aren't gone, Stanzie's journal didn't up and change their names or anything, just the memories are foggy. I know Stanzie's player IRL and I think we talked about her problems for DAYS trying to get this all worked out
15. As a goon myself I have to say the goons always find/do the best things
16. I have nothing planned. I just knew that was my eventual plan. With Siben's character being interested in Ceruleum (Not really so much in the magitek) he explains things as he learns more about it and she's on her own trying to learn how to break it down and put it back together. Currently, her leg is metal, has a fairly wide-ish range of motion (Though she walks with a limp) and it requires a lot of upkeep from blacksmiths. I would certainly LOVE to get a storyline going with you if you'd like, it'd be better than just "It happened somehow in someplace" lol.
17. pfft I'm not giving you any names! NEVA
18. Ah! Thanks for the Magitek lesson, Merri! Loki has a fake leg and my eventuall plan is to switch her to a Magitek leg when she learns more about the stuff. Basically, I'm trying to do what your doing, but she skipped through time and has quite the gap to catch up to. So far she's only taking it apart, examining, and having her scientist friend, Siben, explain to her what the hell Ceruleum is. It's a slow process
19. My fiance's alt is a Garlean loyalist and I'm playing his sister, who is also one. We've been roleplaying them a little, but not much yet as we aren't comfortable enough with the Garlemald lore. Once we get more information we plan on making mischief.
20. 128 people per shell. Definitely going to be stalking some officers just to try and get in before the rush
21. Female Highanders have some of the best models in the game, shame there is so few of them.
22. My guild and me are planning on stamping Balmung as our stomping ground but I am considering rolling an alt on Gilgamesh.
23. This is true. Something Awful is going to Excalibur and there is like... 500 or so of them? And Excalibur only has 300-something votes. It's a bit skewed for now, but get the poll to more places and you'll see more accurate results.
24. Loki:

Item Name Drop Chance

Arcanist's Tome 70%

Broken Compass 60%

Magitek prosthetic Leg 10%

Little Black Book 5%

500gil 100%

Arcanist's Tome: Actually quite useless as it has a bunch of cursing written over the actual words of the book. Soneone was unhappy with their training. Guess it was a good ting you put them out of their misery. Broken Compass: It's ornate and pretty enough, but worthless. It must have held a special meaning to the owner. Who is now dead. Because you killed her. Monster. Magitek prosthetic Leg: Ewwwwwwwwwww. Little Black Book: There seems to be names.... of males.... and dates... and little stars next to some... How taudry! How Vile! You'll just stick it in your pocket so no one can ever read it... yeah... that's the stuff. 500gil: You wonder why she was carrying so much, then realize you don't care that much and you got new shoes to buy. Now run, run before she respawns!
25. Loki Past: Looking for equipment to go Spelunking in caves around Ul'dah, where the Crimson Blade headquarters was. She spent a lot of time in the miner's guild, either getting drunk or making connections. In Limsa Lominsa, as she was a pirate, she hung out at the Bismark quite often. A beach. Pick one. Now At a beach. She's been spending quite a bit of time at Costa Del Sol, but it can be too loud for her liking. Still, you'll see her there a lot Limsa Lominsa, running around like a chicken with her head cut off. Night Blades recently settled there and she's helping get them grounded. Though she hasn't had much time for it, you'll still catch her in a bar from time to time. Armi Past: Sanctum of the Twelve. She would go there a lot to pray to Nymeia that the threads of fate were turned in her friends favor. Ul'dah, getting supplies for being a medic to her team. Honestly she wasn't seen much outside. If anyone saw her it would be at the Sanctum Present: Sanctum of the Twelve. Though for very different reasons. Armi's crisis of faith is manifesting in strange ways and she's angry. Where better to yell at the God's she once worshiped so willingly. She doesn't want to ADMIT she's angry, so this is the only place where she's really get her rage on. Limsa Lominsa. She never really went there in the past and is struggling with settling there now. She'll look lost, a little frightened, but not meak. The Culinary Guild. Armi loves to cook and it calms her nerves. Constant target practice outside of the Archer's guild in Gridania.
