  1. I'm not gonna give you relationship advice, but I will quote Yoshi-P about your love of FFXI "Another common phenomenon among MMO players is something I like to call "first love syndrome." A new game comes out and you play from beta through to the free trial, and although there are a lot of things you like, you always go back to your first MMO. You feel the updates were always so much better in your first MMO, focusing on the things you can no longer do in the other games you try. This is just how people are after playing a particular game for a long time, getting stuck in their old ways. I'm sure anyone who's had to change schools because of their parents or change jobs because of company troubles can relate. Suddenly finding yourself in a new environment can be stressful, and there's always that desire to go back to the way things used to be. Even small details reminiscent of "the good old days" can be reassuring." Seems to be what your going through
  2. I'm gonna post from the other side. > I'm a yeller. It's a terrible habit, but after awhile my patience just goes away when it comes to end game and I end up yelling. I have not done it in a long time, but I still feel bad for my antics in WoW. In WoW, we were a light RP guild with a heavy, heavy emphasis on Endgame and, as everyone has to start somewhere and this was the Burning Crusade expansion, we started our Endgame in Karazhan (I don't really consider Heroics "endgame" and NEITHER SHOULD YOU BIOWARE) Karazhan was really really fun when it was level appropriate and, honestly, if Blizzard had introduced level sync I would have ran it forever. Our first week we couldn't get passed the first (optional) horse boss. It was maddening, but it was fine and very very fun to try and get these bosses down. Eventually though, we made it all the way to Prince. Once we made it to Prince, I expected no less than excellent (not perfect) execution of my guildies (I was merely an officer of the NB though, as the endgame focus made me not want to be lead) because, if I do say so myself, I was really really good. I know that sounds cocky, but I was very good. As a Beastmaster hunter I was always 1st or 2nd on the damage charts, not just in my guild, but in any other run we did with other endgame guilds (You tend to make friends with other endgame guilds and run with them as well, it's very very social in endgame, but it can be fuuulll of drama. We had... 4 other endgame guilds we ran with). Anyway, because I was good, I expected older member of the guild to be good, and stuff like this happened: 1. During one of the weeks we were running newer people through Karazhan for gear, our usual Rogue wouldn't kick when he was supposed to for some reason and ended up wiping us. 5 times. It was the 6th time I FLIPPPEDDD out on Vent and yelled in front of everyone - newbies included. And when I mean yelled, I screamed and cursed and called him all the names in the book. Poor newbies. 2. My irl best friend played a hunter along with me and had a horrible problem of Feigning Death (A hunter ability that wipes all threat) instead of just taking the death. We were at Maiden (3rd boss) and we wiped. She feigned instead of just dying with us, so Maiden agroed her again since she was in range and she pulled Maiden to the front of Karazhan, wiping us again. GUESS WHAT I DID? To this day she still says I was the biggest bitch that day, though we do laugh about it now. 3. I made fun of EVERYONE who couldn't do Little Red Riding Hood correctly, to the point where the guild prayed they didn't get that boss fight (It was one of 3) because of my behavior. These are just the ones I remember. I'm sure there are worse stories from when we got further than Kara. The guild put up with me because Ellion was the Leader and I was his girlfriend, but I really had the tendency to be quite toxic. I'm not like this anymore I promise >< Once Wrath of the Lich King came out I started to chill out because I realized I was scarring people away! The roleplayers stuck around, but the endgamers thought I was too extreme (LOL). Running Nax, I was perfectly calm.... 98% of the time Also, I was able to admit my mistakes starting in Nax, instead of just blaming everyone else (There's this fight with this big ol dog that the hunter has to use a calming shot on to keep him from Frenzying... guess who forgot to do that the first 8 times? *raises hand*) I was the problem at one time, is what I'm saying. I'm happy now a days to be part of the solution to Toxic behavior.
  3. Info Info Info! There are THREE servers that RP people have talked about being on, one here and two on the Beta forums. Gilgamesh - the ones that is listed here as the alternate RP server until Balmung becomes available. I've not heard anything on the Beta forums saying they are going to roll on Gilgamesh for RP. It seems, the server is only discussed here on the RPC as an option Behemoth - has a LOT of traction in the Beta forums, as there is already an RP group from the Beta forums moving there (I was invited, but passed). I think if those people new about the vote on the RPC (Which we should probably tell them, maybe I will in the appropriate thread) they would definitely vote Behemoth. I think there is 20 or so of them, there website is: animounted.net if you want to look them over. Be warned: The Behemoth thread in the Beta there were a lot of people talking about how they didn't want RPers on their and they would harass them, just something you should know before voting. For those in Beta, the relevant thread: http://forum.square-enix.com/ARR-Test/threads/28462-Roleplay-Discussion-Beta-and-onwards. The harassment of those on Behemoth thread: http://forum.square-enix.com/ARR-Test/threads/47135-Alternative-RP-server-Behemoth%21 Leviathan - I'm not sure where this server came from but a lot of people in a different beta thread (So segmented I swear) were talking about rolling on Leviathan. The relevant thread where Leviathan is brought up at some point: http://forum.square-enix.com/ARR-Test/threads/35979-Roleplay-Discussion-New-Server-Edition Info Info Info!
  4. Deadpool. I don't even thing I need to explain that one. Forever sad that that Wolverine movie kinda ruined him... My favorite comic book series is the Xmen, generally the Ultimates storyline or the "main" Story. I know it's really popular, but I actually didn't much care for the Dark Phoenix storyline, as Jean Grey is one of my least favorite characters. My favorite xmen is Nightcrawler <3. EDIT: I haven't played the new Deadpool game because I'm really scared it's gonna suck, so if anyone has played it let me know!
  5. You might be the only one, I just looked on Couerl, my phase 1 and 2 server and none of my characters are there.
  6. I FINALLY figured out what Armi is going to look like in 2.0 . I rolled her once but she actually looks like a rather active member of the RPC so out of respect I gave her a redesign. I loooovee her redesign though, so it worked out.
  7. I think it's a lot like Culture in the real world, it depends on how you were raised and where you grew up. Japan is a good example of this, where "Japanese culture" still exists, but they are very, very modern too. Rural areas are much more likely to be traditionalist than, say, Tokyo, but you still see bits and pieces in big cities (Shrines, Certain social stigma's, etc). Even knowing that, a person from Tokyo can be VERY traditional, because of how they were raised or because they want to be closer to their roots. It's absolutely possible, and realistic, for an Ul'dah born and raised Miqote to want to be more of a traditionalist with traditional values to be closer to their culture. The exact opposite, a tribal Miqote wanting to break free of that culture by moving to a big city, is also realistic. This happens often in real life and I, personally, don't feel it makes anyone special. It's just an aspect of their character.
  8. I'm 31, I have no background in writing per say, but I tested genius in Writing and Reading when I was young (Which I felt was useless because it only works for the English language, any other language and it all falls apart ) and wrote a LOT in my teen years. I'm picking it up again and want to be a published author someday. My RP Background is... let's see.. I started roleplaying when I was 16 when my boyfriend at the time introduced me to Vampire: The Masquerade and I got really into it because I had always liked acting and was in Drama club and such. I felt like roleplaying was better than standard acting because I was acting out my own words and really got into the acting part of it. I did some LARPing but... well, LARPing is pretty ridiculous and I always ended up back to dice rolls and tables. The problem with that though is that dice rolling can consume an RP session so I generally avoided games where there were a lot of rules for that sort of thing (Sup D&D) When I was 22, FFXI came out and was my first time really playing an MMO. I thought everyone RPed in MMOs so I was pretty surprised to find out that, NOPE, they did not. I was by myself, didn't know a soul, but made one of the only RP Linkshells on the Quetz server, the Crimson Pirates. I'm not even sure how I found so many people who RPed (Or how people in the LS found them, which was mostly the case lol), but I did and the LS was successful - it lasted longer than me in that game anyway (I last 3 and a half years, it lasted 6 or 7). The CP holds a very special place in my heart and I even have a Tattoo that says クリムソンパイレーツ on my foot ("Crimson Pirates" though it does have an extra ト [To] at the end that I really need to get fixed *sigh* I ignore it because it's pronounced "Toe" and it's on my big toe )
  9. I'll give it a go. Armi came from a shortening of Armachia, which is now generally my internet handle but WAS a character I made in Vampire: The Masquerade about 13 or so years ago. V:TM was the very first thing I ever RPed, I had never even heard of doing such a thing before it, but it was really fun (And through it I found out my dad was a big D&D nerd and he had been keeping that little fact from his kids!). When FFXI was announced, I was hella mad it was an MMO, but decided to give it a shot because I really love the Final Fantasy series. I was quite confused about MMO's at the time, having never played one, and thought they were places you paid to play to Roleplay in (I didn't even realize most people wouldn't be RPing ), so I made a whole character. She was going to be a Summoner, kind of sweet and quiet, but the daughter of a Pirate. BUT her dad is dead and she was actually raised in Bastok, then moved to San Doria. I needed a name, I couldn't think of any so my ex-husband (Husband at the time) told me to just use Armachia. I thought Armachia sounded to harsh for the character, so I shortened it to Armi. I came up with Alliando as her last name because it just sounded good with Armi. Armi has pretty much been my main from game to game (In some games I'll use Loki, who I'll explain below ) and has evolved as I learned how to Roleplay better in the medium. Armi v.1.0 was kind of a Mary Sue who was kind of pathetic and far too quiet so I've been working on making her better from game to game. I always keep two things in mind for her though: She is very, very likable and she has a Martyr complex. Other than that I change her up. She's less quiet, more jovial, and really weird in the FFXIV version - due to her not really knowing how to deal with people. I've never played her as weird, socially awkward yes, but never flat out strange so this will be a real treat! Loki is a character I made about 11 years ago for a Homebrew game called Unizen. Unizen was (and is, as I took over the project about 6 years ago from the original author) a Science Fiction Table Top game about the human race having evolved into 10 different races in another galaxy. Loki was a space pirate (I had a thing about pirates back then) and part of a race of scavengers who don't live on planets and sail the outer reaches. I used the name because, in Unizen lore, Loki's race do not use their real names in front of other races, at all. They have nicknames and these nicknames can be anything, from History to just a color. Loki got her nickname from her fathers friend who was big on Earth's old gods. In Unizen, the name is rare, as not many people know of God's from an Earth they've never seen. However, I know the name is generally popular, especially now after The Avengers STILL, I like Loki's personality - sarcastic, logical, and quite open with her sexuality. So when I make a character like her in other media, I generally use the name Loki because, why not? I haven't used her often in other MMO's, and once she wasn't even named Loki (Didn't work in SWTOR, so I changed it to Mahla). I tend to shy away from using her tooooo much because of the "Open with her sexuality" thing. In some cases, this meant people thought I ERPed all the time. So I generally use her when I think the RP community can be mature enough to handle her flirting . In both cases, I've had people tell me my character names are not RP correct (Armi = "Army", Loki = "A god from mythology lol you are uncreative") but ah well, I'm attached.
  10. I'm female and my mains are generally female. I have two male alts that I've been known to RP frequently, though. Oddly, in TERA I ended up outleveling my main on my male out and my male out became my main I actually find it somewhat challenging to RP a male, I'm still working on getting the nuances right. I actually find it refreshing to just PLAY a male avatar, though. I'm treated differently.
  11. I'm pretty much standing my ground that this was a forum error. The part that was Redacted in the meeting isn't even in that log (It happens later). I don't see why people couldn't watch, though
  12. Oh yeah, the end does look cut off, didn't even get to the part about the concern for new people. I would assume that's because of the Forum's character limit though, not because of any redacting. Hopefully the rest will be put up soon
  13. Ohh... see I was under the impression we were still operating under the old RPC rules (Updates only). I'm fine with people posting in their Guild's thread, though. It may seem spammy, but the best way for a new person to see how a Guild handle's themselves is to read their very own thread. Our thread is so serious, no one knows we're a bunch of goofballs.
  14. Meh, I don't mind mine being out there for all to see. Mine was mostly "Are Legacy LS's worried about being more inclusive to new LS's" stuff. But I can see how some stuff may want to be redacted. Talking about specific people and PMs and such. Even talking about a specific event could warrant a redaction depending on the circumstances. BUT I believe that when talking about the community as a whole, that should remain transparent. Which... I think it is *Goes to read to see if anything was left out*
  15. Armi and Loki were both time skipped. I have some alts who weren't, though. My friend Stanzie is making it so she was at the battle and was not time skipped. So far we're just saying she wasn't in range. *Waits for rage*
  16. I'm personally fine with people having Amnesia, and it seems like that's going to be a major plot point anyway, but I have always been itchy when it comes to Dimension jumps. I say this because I've had some pretty awful experiences with Roleplayers and Dimensional things. SO I think Xenedra has a pretty good case here, just use your FFXI character as a baseline and go from there! (This isn't to say you couldn't make it work, so please don't take this as an offensive post) Armi is from FFXI too, she was created there and she also, like your character, died there. Ever since I've been kind of transposing her personality into different games, though this will be the first time I bring Armi back to a Final Fantasy game. Because of this Armi has had many, many storyline and many interesting things happen to her. FFXI had a lot of great storylines and stuff that happened to her but it was for the best that I left those storylines in FFXI as, even with the same people, it would be hard to recreate again. They were magical then and lightening generally doesn't strike twice. So I understand where you're coming from.
  17. Yeah I didn't mean we all had to be wary of every posters issues, just stating that Rhostel brought up something that I hadn't thought about On your point near the end: That's why I decided to have Loki be darker skinned. When I originally rolled her in 1.0, she had fair skin. Being she comes from a pirate background and is always out in the sun, I didn't think this would be very realistic, so on my re-rolling of her look I darkened her skin a little bit. Then I did it a little more because it looked so nice. So Loki now is a naturally olive skinned girl with a deep tan from always being out in the sun, due to her being a pirate back in 1.0 (In 2.0 when she comes out of the void that will no longer be the case, but that's another story) The one thing that Loki has that I just can't show in game is the fact she has a fake leg. It's just from the knee down (In order to still allow for good motor function) but it's just absolutely impossible to show. Shame but, you know, understandable. They certainly aren't going to code in the ability to do that for my one weird thing.
  18. I think Rhostel is right, it really sounds to me like the poster had a bad experience in other games and doesn't want one here for playing a "pretty" character. Though if we get down to the baseline of it, all the characters in FFXIV are pretty. It's nearly impossible to not make a super glossy, super stylized, super pretty something. Roegadyn and Roega-dame's are still quite pretty in the visual sense. They still have glossy hair, perfect skin, an ample and perky rack, and 6 pack abs. Highlander male's look less barbarian and more "cover of a romance novel" buff. It's really all in how we interpret our own characters - be it rugged, sexy, cute, battleworn, or just average.
  19. I don't age my characters in MMOs until I'm 100% sure years have passed. Usually an expansion or a major event, since those are really the only times Devs say when time passes. I just assume everything happens in the same year till the devs tell me other wise (Even when time passes in game... was really confusing in FFXI let me tell ya )
  20. I've actually never thought about Loki or Armi being pretty... I just made them to what I thought they looked like... Loki is really pretty, though. I don't mean like ICly, but I really love her character design that I made for her and I think she is just gorgeous. I guess this means ICly she's absolutely pretty, but I like to believe I gruffed her up. She does have a giant scar on her face from being in the War and keeps her hair in a ponytail so there is no fuss about it. Armi is pretty, but she kind of Hollywood plain. The kind of pretty where anywhere else in the world she would be considered pretty, but in Hollywood she always plays the plain best friend . You know the type. She's as plain as I can get her in a Final Fantasy game, really. She's not ugly, but the whole point was to make her unremarkable. She doesn't have any scars and she's not gruff, but she's definitely not OMG GORGEOUS
  21. Ah, magical amnesia. The thing they do when they don't know what to do.
  22. I can try to put some perspective on it, as - as much as I like to downplay it - the gap between 1.0 people and 2.0 is an issue. Coming into an already established group is intimidating. Some RPC people have gotten used to each other and have roleplayed with each other for 2 years. 2 years! That's a long time. Try to think of the Balmung community like a club in high school. They've been together since they were Sophmores and now their Seniors, and now your the lowly little freshman trying to get in. That's scary. They are used to each other. They understand how each other roleplays, what their characters are like generally, and have stories connecting each other. The linkshells that are established seem highly intimidating and yet completely intriguing at the same time, because - like it or not - everyone wants to be part of the "in" crowd, and the "in" crowd on Balmung for RPers will be linkshells that are already established. People will want to be a part of those well known shells and even just SAYING "We aren't recruiting yet" can feel like your shunning new players. That's just how it is. New shells will be made, but they may feel they can't hold a candle to old shells. Who would want to be with a new shell, when they can apply to an already established, popular shell? It can be frustrating and scary. It's all about being a part of the in crowd. Trying to be a part of it, or even just entertaining the though of being a part of it, can be stressful. Rolling on a new server is so, so tempting. There is no In-crowd. There are no popular characters or popular linkshells. There's no one to have to kowtow to, no hoops you will have to jump to try and feel accepted. You are making the rules as you go with other new people. Everyone starts at level 0 and, as much as people like to pretend other wise, that is just not the case on Balmung. ~~~~ This is not to say people shouldn't roll on Balmung though. I'm all about rolling on Balmung. I was here way back in the day during the 1.0 Beta (Maybe even before) and was very active here in the RPC. There are people that are still here from when I signed up on this forum, now having 2+ years experience on little ol me who only played 1.0 for a short time. I recognize a lot of names and they may not recognize me, but I'm almost in awe they managed to stick with the game this long. It's intimidating, having to see those people in game. I recently went to a Linkshell leaders meeting and it seemed like everyone knew each other and I was like, at first, "What am I even doing here?" but once I let the feeling of being an outsider slide I was able to speak my mind fairly freely. There were a few people there who I felt were really on my side (Thanks for that btw) and that's when I knew that Balmung would be okay. Because there will be people who do not want new people there, that is fact. We new people can't avoid it. As much as people may cry "No, we love new people!" the fact is, there are people who will not want you to intrude on the bubble they built. They will not want you to change the Status Quo. However, there will be plenty of people who will help you and be gracious and rp with you. Sure, some of the people who RP with you may not be the people you want (The "popular ones") but there will be people who will reach out to you with open arms. Never let anyone have you think that rolling on Balmung is a favor they are letting you do. It is the opposite. You are doing Legacy players a favor by keeping their server active and alive. No one wants to be on a dead server, you rolling on Balmung does them the favor. You are stating "I am rolling on your server to keep this community alive." Now this statement "New players are doing Legacy players a favor" May sound inflammatory to some, maybe even some Legacy players will get mad, but I think that's a better attitude to have then "Legacy players are scary and I don't want to deal with them." The reason I am rolling on Balmung (With my 30 person guild who are 95% new) is because I don't want to see the community that started there become severed or force legacy players to roll on a new server to RP (Which would be unfair). I'm rolling on Balmung because I respect their history and the time they put into their characters and, though I wasn't apart of that, I want to see that continue. I also want to be a part of the new chapter that they are building in 2.0! I'm not necessarily talking about RPing with all the Legacy people, but I'm talking about being a part of the history of the server. There's still a lot of room to make your mark on Balmung and, while it may be a bit more challenging, people shouldn't be afraid of it. God this is looonngg
  23. So there is no consensus on when the time skippers come back in the RPC? In my guild, we have it set that Time Skippers begin coming back in Phase 4, so I'm just making sure there isn't a set guideline I should be following or if there is what is it
  24. I'll probably be there, but not on Armi or Loki do to Time Skipping Shenanigans. Trying to decide who to bring...
  25. I generally have two characters I consider my mains in RP: Loki and Armi. They're pretty much in every game I'm in (Though their names may change if the names don't exactly fit lore. For example: Loki in SWTOR was Mahla as I just couldn't justify a Nordic name, of a god no less, in a Star Wars game). As I have a lot of time on my hands, I roleplay both of them pretty well equally, but will favor one over the other if a story is going on that one is involved in. However, when it comes to the guild or just light RP, I have about 5 or 6 "NPC" alts that, while they have backgrounds and could easily have important roles if necessary, are only there to facilitate guild rp or help others main characters be more social. For example: My Highlander male alt is an important "NPC" character for facilitating bringing people into the Night Blades. That's his whole job come launch and he'll be RPed A LOT in the beginning to help bring new people (And older guildies too) into the NB. I have an alt for different situations that require them, just to keep the ball moving RP wise. This kind of solves my problem of wanting to roleplay all kinds of characters, but knowing that trying to roleplay 7 or 8 characters full time would be nearly impossible. So, I have situational alts to help with storylines or just as "Friends" to guildies characters who's players are a bit shy, and then I have my full time characters Armi and Loki.
