Greetings starryslug, welcome aboard the FFXIV RP website! o/ One of my RP alts is a machinist and one is an astrologian, so I feel your pain. ^ ^ I played through ARR to unlock the class for the first character and I'll need to do the same for the other, there's no way around it from what I can tell besides buying the quest progression packs. Write your character in accordance with whatever her level of education and personal experience would be, I doubt anyone will hold that against you. It's not uncommon for RPers to write around whatever is being literally represented in the game by a power level, body measurement, etc. This may sound odd but knowing a lot about the game will actually help you set the parameters for Beryl's progression as a machinist and crafter. Good to meet you Euphemia, I'm glad to hear you're having fun with FFXIV! ^.^ Playing through the quests and learning about the lore can be a good way of getting some inspiration for your character's background, personality and other details. Starting off with some very basic ideas and evolving from there can also help make the development process easier. You could also draw inspiration from what your character looks like as well. For example, if your character looks like the one in your signature you could draw up some initial ideas for her personality based on that. -A cheerful person -Carefree attitude -Maybe the petals suggest she's a fan of gardening and has a botanist job? -She probably enjoys hearing the sound of music

Rogadyns are awesome in general, so I can imagine how much fun a pirate Rogadyn with a cavalier attitude would be to RP. I'm not sure if there's a conventional war going on in Shadowbringers, but I couldn't pass up on making this outfit. Story wise Vikohla, like many citizens, can't fight on the front lines. But even citizens can do their part to aid in the war effort. Vikohla Olinsheer is chipping in. o7 -

Welcome to the FFXIV RP website, Grey! I'm sorry to hear you had a bad experience with Discord, I hope you have a more positive experience here. The cool thing about scholarly characters is that conversations can be very easy to strike up and maintain. With a little bit of lore knowledge two or more characters can discuss everything from local politics to magic theories. Such discussions can also help an RPer learn more about what's going on in the game if someone else has more information about a topic. I wish Black Mages could still heal a little, it sounds like that would've worked well with your character.

Same here, I'm glad I've taken the time to play through the main story quest though. Learning about the story, locations and histories is helping me develop my characters.

I know the feeling! Getting to know more about the story and setting helps me a lot as well. I'll usually have some ideas I'd like to try early into a new MMO, but as I learn about the lore some ideas have to be abandoned while some can be improved. You're not dumb, some things are hard to picture without experience. I felt the same when I first heard about Bulletin Board System video games.

-This is the outfit Vikohla made when her modest magician act became requested at children’s birthday parties. Sometimes she’ll wear it to a costume party along with an imitation Blue Mage staff to add a little bit of poshness to the ensemble. One of her friends amusingly noted that the magician outfit is more normal than her normal attire. -

-Vikohla, with some help from her extremely protective parents, is working towards designing a suite of defense gadgets. As an IRL nod to Phantasy Star these inventions allow her to imitate certain spells and create the illusion that she’s a Thaumaturge practitioner. This is limited however as her tech can’t imitate higher level spells. She’s also only able to mimic basic fire, ice and electricity spells. -

-I felt I had to give her at least one romantic goth outfit. ICly it’s inspired by one of Vikohla’s favorite fashion and music heroes, Matricia Willow. Vikohla can’t afford the genuine article but she’s gotten pretty good at home-weaving clothes that far exceed her allowance. -

-Offensively Vikohla isn’t much help in a fight, but she can carry alchemical supplies and gadgets to aid her friends and defend herself. -

-This magician outfit is inspired by Zatanna from the DC comics universe. Sadly Vikohla isn’t a proper magician but she did learn a few basic slight of hand tricks during her old babysitting job. She’s often dreamt of expanding on this and headlining a performance at the Manderville Gold Saucer. Suffice it to say her parents aren't huge fans of that career choice or the proposed attire. -

Welcome back to FFXIV! o/ I hope you're able to settle well into MMO role playing. Your Silhara character sounds like a good one to explore the lore of the game, especially the recent history and current politics. There are also some interesting details on the nature of magic in the FFXIV setting that he could sink his teeth into.
