discussion What it Means to be a Half Breed
Haven's Fox replied to SapphireSkylines's topic in Lore Discussion
If anyone knows of or has the proper link to one of the old fanfest videos from 2014 there is a section on cross breeding. The link I have is dead since it was a re stream and twitch and well vods don't last long anymore. It was a panel from Las Vegas 2014 if my bookmark is correct. It had bits about SCH fairies apart of the Elemental Realm, Crossbreeding, Life spans, Garlean stuff for 2.4, Lore repository, and Highlanders eyebrows shaved off for battle. Though taking a glance at the videos labeled as such seems to turn up the wrong ones with my quick scrubbing through them. -
NoClip Documentary "The Death and Rebirth of FFXIV"

These are completely worth watching for anyone who enjoys this game. The final part is out tomorrow for those who are curious. -
If SE was to designate an RP server, would you move?
Haven's Fox replied to ExAtomos's topic in RP Discussion
The important take away is that they know the issues of adding in a RP server 4 years after the games release. -
discussion Your thoughts on jump potions?
Haven's Fox replied to Parth Makeo's topic in FFXIV Discussion
I'm about 50/50 on the matter of if they are good or not. Both sides have good merit in the discussion. I just hope that they at some reasonable point do go back and adjust the 2.x story to streamline it. -

Haven's Fox replied to ExAtomos's topic in RP Discussion
Ya, pretty much that to some degree. Maybe they can't do it in the full capacity of serving an entire data center at this time(holy shit lotta connections) but I do not think they are so far behind in how the servers are setup to where it couldn't become a possibility. The 3.0 split zones being an early example of it. Hopefully the new NA data center can provide some of that growing room. Also maybe borrow some of the tech/ideas from the EVE guys. What they do is pretty insane. -

I'd rather not have to deal with moving to a low population server for RP. The economy of Balmung is at a pretty nice place compared to some lower population servers where things are outrageously high. Or even mid population for that matter in some places. Having all of the legacy gil and tons of additional pve players makes this server rather comfortable as it is. Now this bit goes totally off topic but it's what I would like in some form. My pick would be to have SE work on their server tech instead. Let the current servers act as homeworlds. Have places like the main cities and housing be shared instancing all together. In the case of housing it would just scale ad infinitum with new wards as wards are needed. Have cross data center friends list along with the supposed pearls we are getting. Then give players the ability to invite or join a friend/party members home world. Sort of like how I recall GW2 did this. Though I am not sure how it has changed over the last few years since my last time over there. That way when EU players want to pve they have access to local EU servers with excellent ping. Or the same for NA, JP, AUS, or wherever a player might be located. Or you can join your friends server and enjoy content over there with them. So even if a RP world might be set no one is left out despite where they may reside in their homeworld. Though we might have to use a single datacenter after that big overhaul they did years ago. Again totally off topic but this is where I wouldn't mind seeing the game at some point. -
Sorry if this has been answered previously, but have they mentioned a potential date or date range they may announce the server list? No, but I would like to assume they would share this before 4.0 lands and even more so before the pre-order access weekend. So taking that all in we have about 3 weeks to expect some more information before the expansion hits. Maybe we will see something in the live stream Monday.

Actually it doesn't say either way in how the bonus will apply yet. All we have is a vague "Transfers to designated Worlds will be free of charge" statement so far. As I said before we still have yet to see the second half of that news post with the details.
-
As a follow up to what I had first asked. I say this with the thought that if one of the above lower population servers does indeed become one of the designated worlds that the other smaller rp communities can have a chance to merge together if they wish. I know lots of these smaller communities have players that were unable to create on Balmung and with some unable/unwilling to pay the transfer fee. The idea of getting a free transfer with seemingly full housing reimbursement among the 160m gil cap now could be what sways some of these smaller groups to merge together. Just wanted to keep that on everyone's mind since has been such a big topic for all.
-
The portion in which they come out with what worlds will be designated as mentioned in their news post.
-
Waiting to hear the second half of the high population server locking restrictions would be prudent before any choice is made. It could almost be assured this will come before the release of 4.0 so players can pick a server before the expansion lands. If you could please add a proper preface to this post to kindly remind everyone of this and that we still don't have the full picture yet.

discussion An EU server, for EU roleplayers *UPDATED 14/06*
Haven's Fox replied to Swanmay's topic in RP Discussion
Oh too the EU from the US. As for what the EU servers do for their routing I can't say. But if anything I've heard it's a mess from another game I play. -

I would try not using WTFast for a bit. One of the main issues with the old location was the old level3 routing behind the ISP's. We are using a different backend connection now so it is worth giving it a shot. For instance the new location is another 1500miles from me but it has 10 less hops to get there. It's not gonna be a fix for all but it is a fix for lots. -
Thanks for setting this up in your spare time! With so many people having discord servers this is pretty awesome to keep members engaged easier!

Balmung Transfer Restriction Megathread
Haven's Fox replied to BumblingSeaBiscuit's topic in FFXIV News
I would have to disagree with parts of this here with having been one of those that started over on Gilgamesh in 2.0 and came to Balmung at a much later date. The having such a myriad of options for rp opens is amazing or was amazing at the start of Gilgamesh. You could do anything you wanted and go everywhere just like in Balmung today. But as time progressed and the much smaller Gilgamesh population rp'd on little bits of friction among players would spring up. This is inevitable as it is impossible for everyone to get along. The beauty at the start was that it could be ignored or easily washed out with the flood of other rpers around. If you didn't like what ever might have set you the wrong way you could get past it just like what Balmung offers in spades today. What really starts becoming a issue is when those types start creating drama about 'ABC' conflict to other rpers. You get people who just don't want to deal with it and move on. Some will just blacklist the rabble rousers and continue on with their rp. While others will just ignore it at the time and hope it's a limited one time issue. In the smaller communities it is hard to get away or around issues like this. Then you get people fed up and wanting to move to the bigger rp server to once again have the sense of easily ignoring a problem person. This is why Gilgamesh has for the most part died down to a very tiny fraction of what it was compared to the start of 2.0 ARR. Other factors did happen over it's past but things like this were big reasons why a lot of us are now on Balmung. Taking this back to the buffet analogy. Just because there is a ton of food in front of you it doesn't mean you need to try and eat it all at once. The RPC here has some amazing options for finding like minded rp ideas, events, players, and FCs. Take a look and see what you like then dig in or sample a little of each. -
New datacenter hype! No more level3 backbone issues for all we hope... Old location I was hitting anywhere from 30 to 50 from what I remember across the various times I've pinged the server. Though level3 being pretty sketchy over the last few years for more than just the game itself with the lost/dropped packets along that way made it feel much worse at times. The new locations I'm sitting at a 65 yo 75ms~ average as of right now. Will be interesting to check when the west coast goes into prime time hours to see if any slow downs happen. One interesting thing I did end up reading for the switch was the backbone provider the new data centers are using. One commenter pointed out that SE went with NTT, the same backbone apparently used in Japan. Maybe this had a big part in selecting the Sacramento location with a good priced NTT server hub. A bit of whats what. Internet backbone providers are the few groups that provide and sell connections to the internet web itself to the ISP companies we all loathe and barely love. Level3 and NTT being two of those backbone connection providers. Being in the US south east it used to take be about 25 hops across the web net hubs to reach the servers in Canada. Now it takes me only 15 to head to the new servers locations. This is with nearly 2/3rds more in distance for the new location. Less chances for something to go wrong along the way I hope with no more level3.

Balmung Transfer Restriction Megathread
Haven's Fox replied to BumblingSeaBiscuit's topic in FFXIV News
Well this is a pretty interesting surprise. Locking a server down 100% seems like a pretty poor idea in the long run and long run I hope this is not. SE should have taken this chance to continue with the high pop world character creation limits. It would be just as before but offer worthwhile incentives to create characters on all mid/lower pop servers. With what they listed in the post I have a feeling it may only apply to the new and very bottom low pop servers. But it is a start with the bonuses in the end and I wonder when it does start. Also damn that gil transfer hike. Quick napkin math puts a full 8 characters with retainers at lugging 160m gil around now versus 9.6m gil. That would have been amazing to have at the start... issues notwithstanding. -
Putting like the very first santa hat in the armoire with the rest of my event gear.

Hey hey and welcome back to XIV. For transferring over the more liquid gil you can bring the better. I would suggest on your current server if creation restrictions are not a thing then make alts to dump gil on them. That goes double for retainers. I believe it's still 1m per character then 100k for each retainer. Then if you don't have more than 8m plus what you can stuff in retainers then some sellable items are good to invest in. Though do keep in mind that each server is likely to have very different prices. There is a help page on the XIV site that has the full transfer details if you are curious. Yay for VtM and PF! I'm currently in a PF game and it's totally my newest addiction. Far as that little blurb is concerned you'll fit in just fine over on Balmung.
-
Just jumping in to say 'Yay for Pathfinder'! It's become my new addiction over the last year thanks to my FC lead... Also welcome.
-
Hey and welcome! Aside from the helpful post above in this game pretty much anything you can read text wise in this game is helpful. They have shoved bits in all of the nooks from MSQ, side quest text, speech bubbles, FATE info blurbs and even some of the quest items.

I'd love to see number sold at fan fest, through the online stores (before first batch sold out), and the number of people waitlisted. Then have that compared to SE's initial projections of the first run of the book.

There are bound to be more than 30 soulstones for Dragoons. The role of Dragoons in Ishgard is brutal with likely a pretty rough mortality rate over the 1000 years of war. So what happend to those soulstones of past Dragoons that were killed in action? It would be impossible to gather all of the fallen soulstones. You have these fighters who jump great heights to battle dragons in the air. You have a city that is perched over a vast chasm where fights up against the city walls didn't seem that uncommon. There is tons of room for past stones to be lost so there has to be a way to recreate them. Not only that you have the training of new Dragoons. First you start as a lancer of course and work your way up but what happens when you are first given a soulstone? It becomes training back from start to learn the Dragoon ways. I fail to believe that any of the Dragoons didn't have a rough time learning how to jump and harness that power to a precise point. Yes you have that past knowledge and perhaps know how but it's not going to be like turning on a light switch. It's going to take any new Dragoon a bit to adjust to the soulstone and different fighting style before they are worthy of being titled as Dragoons and put into service. New race in Stormblood? - Speculation and Discussion
Haven's Fox replied to Altitis Acquired's topic in FFXIV Discussion
I'd rather have them dump more into the customisation of the characters instead of another race. -
It's that time of year again. A thread bump and a housing photo dump update! After spending a few moons living between the various Inn rooms throughout Ul'Dah it time to say no more! Consequently the timing had started to line up with the company coming back under the good graces of the Immortal Flame. Without a second thought the leaders came together and made those wishes comes true. Then give or take a few lazy moons of members just laying around the house... Bums! Yall have a proper roof again! Let me decorate! First up welcome to the little Oasis that is our front yard. Come and enjoy a nice breeze by the pond with our chocobo's contently Kwehing away. Stepping inside the main focus of the company grabs your attention to the right. Two (mostly) helpful NPC's will help direct you to the current job listing or call up a company representative to perhaps write up a custom job for you. (Look at that awesome place for a fish tank perhaps...) Heading up the stairs a little you start to get a nice view of the lounging area quest and members. Working out way to the top of the stairs we have a company only private area. We have a decent bit of books from various topics all mostly provided by our wonderful leader... Though don't be confused when some have a mix of raised braille like text. We have the back offices for the big red boss and her purple sidekick. Now taking a big a flip on direction we take a peak downstairs to the company only area. What does ever good adventure want? A bar stocked full of tasty drinks and a kitchen providing hot tasty meals. Oh hey look! It's all staffed up for those needy few! Note that one of those barrels totally has 'Enja' stamped on it.
