Captain Kupo, reporting for duty! How can you resist such an intense gaze?

The Vent Tent - Poor PuGs and Other Terrible Tales
Korin replied to Gegenji's topic in FFXIV Discussion
I've found that ranged/caster LB is more useful outside of boss fights on large trash pulls. Both ranged and caster LBs are more effective against multiple adds, and in most Heavensward dungeon bosses, multiple overbearing adds rarely come into play. So... use it on a trash heavy section to clear a room quickly. It's never occurred to me to use it on trashpulls - Again, simply because I've witnessed people being called out on it in the past. It's something I'd never bring myself to do in a pug group because of this - I'll say my greetings, on occasion I'll have to remind the tank that they forgot to activate their tank stance (usually after the first pull where we're all ripping enmity), and then the rest of the dungeon will be done in complete silence...So it's really become a matter of "keep your head down and keep up your DPS". I'm quite curious to try what you mentioned in the vault, though... I have to admit with a pug healer I'm somewhat reluctant to try burning down that Rafflesia boss - I've occasionally been called to ignore the bees, which I do when asked, but otherwise it's a little awkward. I don't really want to be the one wiping the group - At the same time, I don't want to be 'that guy' slowing them down. The sad fact is that I'm not a mind reader, despite what a lot of these groups seem to think. ;; I do appreciate the advice though! I don't really get to limit break as a tank for obvious reasons, so when they suddenly add this DPS limit break to the ranged...I'm still a little out of my depth. That's pretty much what I thought. I don't mind being called out if I'm doing something wrong - But sometimes I do feel like people are just out for conflict. If they're going to apply their own rules to how it's used, then they should say something beforehand, surely? If they want the LB used on a trashpull, perhaps they should ask - Because the attitude I received from the tank made me doubt myself a little. I levelled to 50, for the most part, asking people when they needed me to LB - Eventually it got to the point where it was "eh, just use it on the boss"! And I was comfortable enough that I eventually stopped asking. I know it's just 4-man content and, for me, it probably will always be 4-man content! But it's there to be used, right? If - like you say - It's a situation where no one uses it, and you're popping LB as a healer just for the sake of it...I do wonder if most people don't know it's there, or if they're just unsure when and where is a good time to use it. Probably just rambling now on my part, though. I'm not thick skinned, but I know it's a wee bit sad that I'd show up to rant about some guy scolding me over my LB use >.> When I should really be going "eh, screw that guy! Moving on!" -
The Vent Tent - Poor PuGs and Other Terrible Tales

/rant on The only troubles I've had in DF are when I'm DPSing. That accursed yellow bar in the corner of my screen...When am I even supposed to use it? I'm confident enough, as a melee DPS - Just use it! As a ranged? I don't really know. As a caster...Again, I don't really know. Most of the time I daren't touch it. Why? Because there's always one person that'll call you out on it. I've been levelling MCH on Korin lately - It's a nice change from tanking all of the time! I'll usually take a friend or two with me, but naturally you can't wait for your entire FC to be online just to run a couple of dungeons for the exp... So we were in Sohm Al. My pet DPS was a black mage - So we had two ranged LBs. Lovely! First boss, no one was killing the bees - When I was levelling as a tank, everyone killed the bees! Now a fair few of these bees were pulled in with the healer. LB bar was full - So I had a moment of "oh, I may as well just use this now - Kill off the bees, damage the boss, no one will take that AoE damage..." And then the tank, after his long silence, finally decided to speak. "Why oh why would you do that?" I wasn't aware that a limit break held that much significance in such a dungeon, to be honest. Admittedly, I'm starting to think no one bothers to use it precisely because of people like that particular tank. The bar would've filled up by the time we'd reached the next boss anyway, right? It isn't going to hinder our chances of success, is it? Personally I don't really care much for who uses LB and when - I tend to just hassle my dragoon if she hasn't used it on a bossfight yet and that's that. But in pugs, no one really bothers to call LB before the boss is dead. /rant off That aside, what I really want to ask is - What situations do people expect (ranged) DPS to use that LB on, and when? Am I thinking too hard into this? It's the first time I've really been called out on it, so I'm forever panicking over whether or not I should use it now ;_; -
balmung Looking for nomadic-style RP (Not an FC)
Korin replied to Eses Fafa's topic in Chronicled Connections
I keep browsing over the forums and then somehow I keep finding myself reading this thread, so please consider me interested! ^So much this. Korin isn't really a combat-orientated character, he's just this derpy little alchemist - But I'd love to be able to tag along with him. EU player here, too - If you're willing to have me along! -
Don't be sad! It could always be worse! Always watching...Always.
-
I was about to make a thread for this, but stumbled upon my old one...So i've re-written this instead of adding another thread for the same person onto the forum. Heavily edited now!

WE ARE PREPARED. COME AND GET US. OUR BODIES ARE READY. ...That aside, nice to see (even more) miqo'te around! /fangirl squee I'm pretty sure you'll love Balmung! RP everywhere! If you have any lore questions don't be afraid to ask (I'm no expert, but i'm quite positive that at least someone here can help!) and feel free to poke me ingame if you need a hand with anything! Also, welcome!

I finally got online and found this. It was a good read! Covers a lot of the issues I tend to bump into (although bumping into them is a bit of an understatement) but it's nice to see them discussed here. Being ignored is, more often than not, the reason why I avoided RP for a year or so. Sometimes it was just to avoid the embarrassment - When I finally get over the initial panic mode and approach some RPers, it could often be the case of "We're not actually RPing here, it's a different area of X zone" or "Sorry, private RP" - It kind of shoots me in the face, for lack of a better description. People can accuse me of being thin-skinned or whatever, but my past experiences with RP left me a little bit dejected. Eventually it just lead to me idling around particular areas, setting my RP flag to "looking for contact" and hoping that someone would approach -me- for a change. More often than not I find I'm the one reaching out to newer people - Breaking my own character a little, as usually they wouldn't go there. Some people just click into a group with very few issues - Others, like myself, panic too much. "What do they really think of me?" "They've been around for so long, what if my RP doesn't meet their standards?" etc, etc. Part of my own problem is that I've been in guilds like this before. Someone will approach them, and there will be an incoming bitchfest in the guild chat. Apparently, you're not allowed to RP if you don't have the same/a well-known guild tag over your head. So now I just panic over whether or not they're judging me in their guild channel. Kind of sad, really... I should tell myself to man up and deal with it - Unfortunately it's not that easy. I'd at least like to say (before I rant off-topic again, sorry Eross! I keep derailing) that it should, to some extent, work both ways. People should approach, yes. At the very least, move within emote range and do something - Whether it's sitting nearby to mind their own business or to outright ask the group what's going on. It helps to twist the character a little bit to make things work. Korin is quite introverted, but he has particular character quirks that can make him jump out of his shell within seconds. On the other hand, the people being approached should at least -try- to reach out to the person who approached. I know - Realistically, if you're talking to a group of friends, you'd probably ignore the stranger who just sat nearby and started doing his own thing. It just seems to be the way things work these days - I'm not much different. That's just the point I want to throw out there, though. Yes, we approachees need to take the plunge and hope for the best. I came to this game by myself so I didn't even have anyone to fall back on if I happened to get rejected. I'm just glad I -did- man up and try to get myself involved instead of idling and eventually quitting the game because I couldn't bring myself to join in. But the people being approached need to make an effort too. Don't just ignore people when they walk up to you! Keep an eye out for emotes on their part. Even just shooting a glance in their direction shows that you're at least acknowledging them - Giving them the go-ahead to try speaking to your characters properly. As I'm often on the "Doesn't have a pre-formed group, needs to approach people" side of things, I can honestly say that just being acknowledged when I approach - Even if the character doesn't directly interact with me - Is a huge confidence boost. Did I wall of text rant again? Sorry! :C

Lancers are fabulous. I'm really enjoying it myself despite the fact I have no idea what I'm doing! It's all a matter of personal preference, though - I've tried conjurer and archer for the sake of a ranged DPS class and I'm not enjoying it as much as I'd hoped. That said, I'm on the ps3 and kiting as an archer just looks...a bit silly. From what I gather summoners aren't that great for burst damage. I'm told you all just spread diseases...and then wait. Of course I might be slightly biased towards lancer what with it being my main. I've levelled a bit of pugilist too, that's also quite fun - I guess in the end it boils down to whether you want to play melee or ranged. Just my opinion on that, though! I'm really quite bad on the DPS side of things (who am I kidding, i'm bad at all of it ;__; ) but I figured i'll throw what I've learned and/or heard of so far at you. c:

Does Balmung creation occasionally open, or..?
Korin replied to Verranicus's topic in FFXIV Discussion
There are a lot of catpeople. They aren't 'the problem' though, so to speak. Really, it's just the same as everyone rolling humans or elves in WoW. But there are a lot of players in general, so there are a lot of hyur/elezen/lalafell/roegadyn too C: So do whatever you prefer! It doesn't matter how many other people play the same race, what matters is what you want to play as. Basically what Briaya said, though! Just let other people have some input if you want them to, but in the end the decision is yours and don't find yourself pressured into rolling one if you -really- don't want to. -
I was typing a wall of text and then I realised I probably went off into a bit of a rant on the subject. I understand where you're coming from with this. What you've said isn't much different from what my opinion would be, really. I might just be unlucky, but in my experience it's been one of two things - As you already said, the people who ignore others when their partner is around. I've had many a short RP session brought to an abrupt end when X character logs on. I'm not one to get jealous or anything along those lines, but it isn't hard to piece together what is going on - Which I'd have no issues with! It just leads the way to a lot of things, for me - The fact that he or she is prancing off to RP with someone more important to their character is the last thing on my mind. I worry more about whether I'm a bad RPer - whether or not anybody really enjoys RPing with my characters. Is that why they rush off? It happens often enough. It's the same feeling as being a part of a guild with it's own inner cliques. They're already established and frankly, although they might not be all that unwelcoming, there's definitely a priority on who they'd rather be RPing with - Even if it's unintentional, it doesn't make a new member feel like a part of the group. This is just how I feel, as someone who is extremely reluctant to initiate RP due to a fear of being ignored or just being event fodder. Just saying here, even indirectly it's still a blow to someone's confidence. It seems a little off topic, but essentially what I'm getting at here is that my eventual disinterest in RP popped up from the endless sea of couples, conveniently placed in the guilds I wanted to join, isolating my character. It's probably my own fault, I know - I'm extremely shy and reluctant to approach people in RP. Trying to approach a couple that turn up to an event is twice as hard. Do you interrupt them, or leave them to it? Isn't part of the fun in some events to meet new people, anyway? It's a bit of a dilemma for me. ...I wall of texted again, I think. Folks can ignore that rant if they're bored of it already C: Aside from that, romantic RP doesn't bother me - People can go ahead. Just don't isolate people, and don't cross the boundary between IC and OOC. It's partially the reason I rolled a male character - I won't go into that rant here because it's water under the bridge now and I'm past caring (at least, I think so!) but it's horribly uncomfortable when someone takes an IC relationship in the wrong direction, I.E through the fourth wall. Just don't. That's in a generic situation, though. I know OOCly people can know each other on all kinds of different levels, but really - I hope saying this doesn't get people pouncing on me for whatever reason, but I imagine my point is there. ...Somewhere. Also, apologies to you J'hared, I know I quoted you but this post isn't like a personal attack or anything! I just agree with what you said, mostly, and felt the need to throw my own opinions out there! /rant off Also, to the OP - It was a good read! It's given me a little more of a positive view on this type of RP that I've rarely explored. My own experiences with it were somewhat offputting but it's nice to see what other people think without treading into a flamefest of romance VS ERP or whatnot - I tend to avoid the subject so I appreciate it. ...Eugh, I definitely went off topic there. I can't even be bothered to re-read it myself, so I don't blame anyone for skipping this rant. x___x

The past couple days, I've been waking up at around 8am CST (that's 6am PST) and trying for at least an hour to log in. All I've gotten for my efforts are a slew of 1017s, so... yea, even getting up early, you're more likely than not not gonna get in. Yeah, it isn't such an easy solution as just waking up early. I usually log on about 9-10AM here - In the UK, mind, I have no idea how early that is where you are though - And I still get a queue time. Two or three hours later and you're being hit with 1017s. I never really had these issues before Monday, though - I only struggled to get past the 1017 errors if I logged on after 7pm, and I assume just about everyone is awake at that point, so... If they're not letting more people in to the server, and the server wasn't this busy (to my knowledge) over the weekend, does that mean they're shrivelling up or something? Or are we just dealing with more AFKers by this point? Well, at the very least we can just sit and hope for the best. I wouldn't mind a more stable Coerthas where I can actually hit the dragon instead of watching my chocobo peck at invisible dragon butt. And then a FATE spawns on my face and I get crushed by an invisible Cyclops. ...And following this, a sliding chocobo train swoops in to save the day! Yeah...That's kind of a minor issue and probably on my end, but I'm allowed to rant here, right? I really feel bad for the people who can't get on to the server they want to - I know that feeling of isolation despite being in an MMO. It'd be a huge boot to the face if they have to actually pay to transfer to the server they wanted to play on in the first place, as well, so I do hope they offer free transfers once people jump ship and decide they don't actually enjoy FFXIV as much as they'd hoped.

I didn't notice this thread before now :c You can definitely use the keyboard for the Ps3 and the keyboard hotkeys work fine, but I don't believe it replaces your UI altogether - I haven't found that option yet, though I find it much easier to play using the PS3 controller and would be glad to answer any questions you have should you find yourself a bit lost with the controls there! I'm still learning them, myself, but maybe I'm just a bit slow. Guild-wise I can't say much since I'm not in one yet, however while I'm a little biased towards Balmung i'd suggest hitting up that server when it's open as there is already an EU community - I'm not sure what Gilgamesh is like for EU players right now so if anyone can shout at me about that it'd be good. c: Regardless, feel free to poke me ingame when you do manage to make a new character - Hopefully the servers will open up soon!
-
I've been ranting about this on the maintenance thread but I'm suspecting the AFKers. ...Or maybe I just really dislike the AFKers. But no, really, I've been online since about 10am or so here (is that 2am or 5am for you guys?) and despite having no issues, I did get hit with a queue upon trying to log in. It seems to have gotten worse through the day, and it's not even peak time yet so I assume the worst is yet to come. That is to say I've been attempting logins for the past two hours before I stopped and considered for a moment "what am I doing, why" and decided it really, really wasn't worth the trouble and frustration. :c Good luck trying to get in, regardless!
-
I wish that were the case. Most people I know are returning to school/college/uni within the next few weeks so I can understand why they're frustrated. I'm personally awaiting responses from several employers so I don't know how much my playing time will be affected should I get a job any time soon. I still really, really think implementing an AFK timer would help the situation a little bit. I logged on at about 10am or so this morning and I still had to get into a queue. I can understand there being a few EU players logging on and such, but let's be honest - It's probably the AFKers that are causing that. They really do get under my skin though, so you can ignore that if you so choose. I'm not asking anyone to start a debate on AFKers, they're just something I like to grumble about! But...yeah. I think I'm just particularly miffed with it today because I spent a good 1.5 hours wiping on Titan this morning. Had my lunch, got disconnected at about 2am, spent the next two hours trying to log back in. I think i'm just going to call it for the time being. At least I got some sketches done, I guess? Still not my idea of fun, though. Not to mention I'm running the game on the Ps3 in the living room so my time is limited before the folks want to use the TV - I can't afford to keep it running forever, either, so I'd rather log off between breaks and such to save on electricity. ...I think I went a little bit off-topic there, but there's my maintenance-erhmagerdtheserversaredown-rage-thing. And sort-of a response to that quote, though I don't intend to sound like an ass in this so if it comes across like that...feel free to shout at me :>

Been happening to me all weekend. I haven't had anything aside from lobby errors and 1017 until today. :c I figured it was more of a PC issue, but apparently not. Servers are exploding? I'm more amused by the fact that monday afternoon is hellish but the weekend was fine.
-
I made it into a 30-person queue, then got the 1017 error. What? :c
-
Here's hoping it's fixed soon. I can only imagine how much of a pain this is for people who are back school or working through the day - SE really really needs to implement an AFK timer or a larger queue capacity. I'd like to think that would at least solve half of our problems...
-
I just had this, so it's not just you. Now I can't even get access to the NA/EU server list. Sigh. Likewise, I had to keep reloggng until it loaded those for me. Now it's back to 1017 spam! I still find it a little sad that the servers are already full though The most i've had is a 300 queue which is somewhat pitiful. Cheers though! It's a relief to know my internet didn't explode on me, at least...
-
Definitely getting worse. I disconnected just now and I am getting world full notifications thrown at me - It's 2pm here, hardly peak time. Is it the same for anyone else right now or can I assume it's an internet issue on my end? That is to say, is the lobby screwed up and did anyone get booted out - I am well aware that world full isn't a connection issue before any raging bulls decide to home in on that mistake...
-
I've been logging in and out all day with little issue. Worst I've gotten was a queue of 2. Then again, I haven't logged in for a few hours so maybe the peak hours have destroyed that. I think the worst part is that that you don't even seem to get a queue at this time. Just a message telling you to "wait until an opening is available and try again". Isn't that kind of the point of a queue? I can understand the frustration - they more or less present you with 'keep clicking until you get in' as the only option at this point. It kind of saddens me that most of the potential openings are taken by these AFKers though. I'm still spotting the same people as usual in the same places as usual, so...
-
I was wondering about that! I ended up in a group with two lancers and two arcanists for my first dungeon. Lovely group. It kind of confused me as to what classes could tank and heal, though - I was just like...WAIT WHAT WHY AM I NOT GETTING QUEUES IF IT'S THIS EASY
-
Seconded! Even if you weren't serious about that one... I was absolutely serious. Gau is one of my favorite FF characters. Uwaooooo~! Marry me please. 8| Really, a Gau in this game wouldn't go amiss. After all, you'd have to find him first...And if you don't want him around, well, don't bother looking for him. :>
-
Being afraid of pugs is the story of my life ;---; Nice to see another GMT player too, though - And a PS3 one at that! Being on the PS3 is why I don't really want to tank - I struggle with the targeting even as a DPS, so I dread to think how much i'll panic and fail if I have to pick up a stray target... Feel free to hit me up on Korin if you want to group up sometime! Pugging is fine once you're used to it, but it still doesn't beat running dungeons with people you know.
-
I know exactly how you feel - In most games I am far too much of a wuss to even try queueing for dungeons. Usually I'll hide away until I find a guild or just a generally friendly group who are willing to force me into dungeons and the like. Once that hurdle has been cleared I might even dare to tank or heal! It's always a confidence issue. At least on my part. Thankfully since it's so early into the game I find that pugs - including the silent ones - are still helpful and not at all elitist. Outside of that I find that forming or joining a group outside of the duty finder is also helpful - The ones I have been with so far have been in the same boat. It doesn't hurt to give it a try once or twice, at least - What's the worst that could happen?
