Exactly.

I wonder if in this expansion were are going to have to see all our friends die for realsies this time. I shall defend the beautiful Yugiri with my life!
-
Not everyone has played the current MSQ through...especially me, apparently.
-
To be honest, I still haven't caught up with the MSQ. Too busy prepping for Samurai and Red Mage.
-
New Stormblood video just came out showing some cutscenes for the MSQ. Among them we get to see Yda unmask and guess who she bears an uncanny resemblance to. Spoilers ahead! [video=youtube]

I'd imagine Dragoon jumps require some manipulation of aether, but I'm not sure if there's a hard confirmation on that. There is, yeah. They draw aether from their "inner dragon" to enhance their combat - the Azure Dragoon doubly so, because they also draw from the Eye of Nidhogg. I mention the Azure Dragoon because although there are/were only 2 in the span of the game (Estinien and the WoL), that's... what the in-game abilities are based around: being the WoL Azure Dragoon. Lancers are another matter, though. I will say that Life Surge is a LNC ability, and that must be aetheric - which opens the door for other LNC abilities being the same. Regarding the example in OP - Samurai - I think it's extremely likely that the bulk of its in-game abilities will, like the Ninja abilities, focus on the storing and release of aether in order to enhance combat: -- HOWEVER. In terms of RP, I think you could definitely do a character who fights martially with no aether. You'd just describe it as such in your emotes - that there's no magic fancy sparkly flippies going on. I think it's good practice to describe exactly how you want your character's abilities to be working, anyway, even if it's the same as they appear in-game. And I think it would be interesting to see what shape a character who aspires to stand alongside aether-users without using it themself would take! Just as you don't have to follow job archetypes to the letter (i.e. just because your character punches things doesn't mean they're [going to be] a Monk), you also don't have to follow class archetypes. Not everyone who wields knives is a Rogues' Guild veteran, and not everyone who picks up a spear is going to use it with aetheric enhancement - even if that turns out to be how the in-game abilities are. This is perfect then. This info will definitely come in handy in the finalization of a character. I'm glad to know that enhancing abilities via aether is canon and not lore breaking.

Though she is not yet a finalized character, A'yana Kimar (previously Ayane Yukimura) is currently INTP-A. Her personality is subject to change, but she's almost ready for RP so I don't see this changing too much. The Logician Introverted: 51% Intuitive: 67% Thinking: 67% Prospecting: 71% Assertive: 87%

Ninja obviously use magic. I'd imagine Dragoon jumps require some manipulation of aether, but I'm not sure if there's a hard confirmation on that. Bards are using magic when they sing. Warriors are using very similar abilities to Dark Knights, but focused on rage. Gladiators and Paladins are both using magic in at least some of their abilities. Flash, for instance, requires the user to focus aether at the tip of their blade. Machinists don't manipulate their aether on their own, but the aetheroconverter does it for them. Thanks for the response. I've focused so much on spell casters that I'm afraid I know little of martial classes.
-
I know monks and dark knights have some capacity for aetheric manipulation, but I'm curious to know if the other martial classes are also capable of such feats.

So, in developing one of my characters for Samurai I began to wonder more about the use of aetheric manipulation (magic) by Disciples of War. We know that the Disciples of Magic use incantations and/or geometric algorithms to manipulate aether directly and thereby achieve certain results. However, I was wondering if the martial characters also manipulate aether in their own way, such as to enhance their striking power or speed? In other words, are those flashes of energy during combat more than just fancy game visuals? Are they actual observable phenomena to the characters in the world? I like to think they are not just for my character's development but also because it goes a long way toward explaining why a tiny Lalafel (or any race for that matter) can injure or fell a massive dragon using what should amount to toothpicks by comparison. So what do you guys think/know about the subject? Is it actually the manipulation of aether or am I just reading to much into video game visuals? Sorry of this has been discussed before. I tried to search for it in the search bar but came up with nothing .

I'd say the thing that I'm most excited finally being able to RP with my upcoming Samurai character. She's been in the works for a while now and has undergone some rather drastic changes, but she's almost finished. Once SAM is released, she will be ready for public RP. I'm also excited for when my main, Celica Crestwood, can take up the rapier and explore a new magical disciple via the Red Mage.

Why do our characters close their eyes while casting spells?
Sylentmana replied to Rosanna Foxfire's topic in Lore Discussion
I would imagine its a concentration thing. If you look in other fantasy mediums, such as Dungeons & Dragons, casters have to concentrate on their spells as they recite the incantation. Closing one's eyes can help block out distractions. This is why most interrupt abilities involve a sudden physical strike. It breaks the caster's concentration keeping them from casting the spell. -
Being a thaumaturge, Celica tends to go for a devastating first attack followed up by a series of high powered spells designed to overkill, just in case. Should that fail, she will often swiftcast a sleep spell so she can back off and regroup for another go. When all else fails, she runs away as fast as possible and comes back when she feels she can gain an advantage over her opponent. Lately, she's been practicing some sword play to mix in with her tactics. Ayane tends to fight aggressively, pressing her opponents until they make a mistake and she can slip her weapon into an opening. If the opponent is still standing when she begins to tire, she switches to a defensive stance and tries to redirect her opponents attack and riposte. She is careful not to allow her opponent to put her to far on the defensive and will often shift from what was at first a defensive stance to a swift and powerful attack designed to throw her opponent off balance, setting them up for a take down.

I couldn't even finish it. None of the character aside from the king looked anything like they did in the game. If you going to go that photorealistic then why not just do a live action movie? Kingsglaive was one of the worst movies I've ever seen and not in a so-bad-its-good sort of way.
-
Celica likes to secretly write highly offensive and insulting letters to people, especially nobility and the wealthy. She'll often write them under the pseudonym "Canterbury Jack," but sometimes she'll address them as if they're from the recipient's political and/or social rival just to stir shit up. She once started a house war this way. She didn't mean to, but she enjoys the chaos and seeing her peers flustered.

For Celica, I'm torn between three voices. I like Laura Bailey's voice, especially her Saint's Row 3 voice, as at least one other person has already mentioned:[video=youtube] I also really like Colleen Clinkenbeard's voice as Erza:[video=youtube] This one is especially relevant as Celica is loosely based on Erza, though much less serious in personality. Lastly, I like Ami Koshimizu's voice for Ryuko Matoi, though Erica Mendez is pretty good too:[video=youtube] For Ayane, its easy. The voice of Ryoka Yuzaki for Satsuki Kiryuin:[video=youtube]

Well, I have to say I'm guilty as charged on the Samurai thing. I do have a character I was working on preparing for Red Mage, but she kind of got pushed to the side with the SAM reveal. Its time to pull her back up front. As for the Red Mage's origins, I think Sharlayan is the most likely. It just seems to fit.

Hello and welcome! I do have to point out that you wrote ears instead of years which I thought was funny. -
Gil and You - Your character's relationship with wealth
Sylentmana replied to Chompie's topic in Fun Prompts
Ayane: She comes from a wealthy family, but since her arrival in Eorzea she has been cut off from her family's resources and has been rather frugal with her gil. She largely lives hand to mouth with her adventuring work, putting most of her money towards weapon and armor maintenance. Sometimes she can afford to splurge on a good meal. Reiko: She is largely in the same situation as her sister Ayane. However, she has made some connections here and there which have lessened her money troubles considerably. Celica: She comes from a wealthy family that pays for just about everything so that she can focus on her research. She does some adventuring work on the side, but this is more to gain combat experience than to acquire wealth. Despite her family's wealth, she's not frivolous with her gil, but does live rather comfortably. Maligna: She has almost no concept of gil, preferring to use the barter system. She carries no gil with her, but is adept at survival in the wilderness and will sometimes trade potions or do mercenary work for food/gear. Magical items have the greatest value to her. -
Welcome! Its nice to meet you!

The Official "I Have Nothing to Do, Entertain Me" Thread
Sylentmana replied to Branson Thorne's topic in Off-Topic Discussion
Just sitting here getting my body ready for the new Zelda coming out this Friday along with the Switch. -
I've mostly been reading old D&D novels. I just finished The Ring of Winter and I'm about to start the Dragonlance Chronicles original trilogy.
-
Ok, going to start over with my characters doing it the right way this time. Ayane: Almonds and the sea (not too bad) Reiko: Toothpaste and control? Celica: Peppercorns and virility (she would find that second one uncomfortable) E'lora: Nutmeg and prowess Maligna: Peppercorns and power (fairly appropriate)
