Welcome to the Town Square section! This area is meant for stories, journals, and interactive forum RP between characters. Should your thread be open to responses (IC or OOC), please indicate as such with an [Open] tag in the title and/or by making a quick OOC comment in the first post. Otherwise, everyone should assume that the post is closed to responses. For interactive scenes, authors may post the setting, rules, and other relevant info for the thread in their first post if they wish to. When the thread has concluded in an interactive scene (after the author exits the scene), authors are asked to lock it. You will find this feature beneath the last post of the page under a drop down menu titled "quick-mod tools." Please give those involved time to properly exit the scene before locking it on them. Those who wish to continue the scene should do so in a new thread. ======================================= Rules and Guidelines: 1. This section is strictly for FF14 related content. Do not post Twilight fan fiction here! 2. No god mode or metagaming. See the RPC's official definitions in the Assembly Room sticky for more details. All posted content is OOC knowledge unless specified otherwise by the author (unless it's a newsworthy event, such as an explosion in a city). 3. All interactive scenes take place in present day unless indicated otherwise by the author. 4. Be courteous: If you jump into an interactive thread to interact with someone, please be respectful enough to check the thread often rather than waiting days or longer to do so. It's a huge blow to the flow of interaction if someone suddenly disappears from the scene for a long period of time, leaving the author and everyone else involved high and dry. 5. Please refrain from posting OOC/IC responses to a person's story unless given permission beforehand. If you have any OOC comments about it, please send them to the author via PM. 6. We are rated between Teen and Mature for content. That means no detailed sex scenes or anything of that nature. If your RP group allows that, that's fine. But you'll still have to keep those types of stories posted on their boards or edit it appropriately before posting it here. Anything violating this will be removed by a moderator or administrator and a notice of its removal will be sent to the author via PM. "Fade-to-Black" should be used when necessary.

Please let me know via this thread or via PM when you have 3+ members for linkshell Council membership and advertisement on the main site. Also feel free to submit to me a button that is exactly 80 x 80 pixels if you don't want the default icon for your group on the main site. I should also note that I won't actually add anyone else to the Council until the new charter gets passed due to the proposed changes of Council and moderators. But you will be added after the vote assuming you have 3+ members ^^

New FF14 Interview: What you hated in beta is here to stay
Kylin replied to Aveline's topic in FFXIV News
I've used a controller. Pretty much just like FFXI in that regard. You can change your button settings as well in the config menu. I've always used a controller (and actually quit MMO's like Everquest II because they weren't gamepad friendly >.>--that's right, I hate keyboard/mouse usage ). Never have much problems RPing while using it. Autorun ftw! -
Simply picking the "1st" or "2nd" may not be viable though. SE may put in measures to help keep servers from overloading, such as not putting them in alphabetical order and instead making them appear randomly on the selection screen. For example, a typical selection screen may look like this: Atomos Chocobo (RP) Cloud Garland (RP) Sephiroth Based on the "pick the 2nd" rule, we'd go with Garland. HOWEVER, what if the list looks more like this? Person 1: Atomos Chocobo (RP) Cloud Garland (RP) Sephiroth Person 2: Garland (RP) Chocobo (RP) Cloud Atomos Sephiroth Suddenly, the rule no longer works. The result? We end up with a divided RP community.
-
Eh, I thought it was pretty straightforward and not complicated at all. As for why it changed from L to C, that was due to the concerns over how Sephiroth would have been our server choice had we used that system and the server names remained the same. But if we're going to vote on the current server names in case they don't change, I guess that's moot. I don't really see how we could cut out #1. Having an official RP server is a huge deal that can't be simply ignored. However, I suppose we could cut down the other stuff a bit more.

Open beta starts in about 2 weeks according to SE's latest interview. They said "early September" and "ASAP."
-
I'd be on board with holding a vote on the present server names. We'd just have to make sure everyone was aware that the results may be made void if the server names do indeed change (which they likely will). However, I think we should hold off on that until open beta just in case they release the real server names along with the next phase. If the server names don't change by open beta, then I think we should have an initial vote just to quell the worry. However, I do disagree with having the poll run for longer than 5 days max. Server selection is a big deal, and I'm sure the Aion people here can testify to that based on their experience with the server voting. People WILL try to sabotage the vote and the longer the poll runs, the more at risk it is of being sabotaged. Overall, I'd like to make the following proposal (which should cover just about any server selection problems). This is mostly based on the previous proposal, only with minor modifications made.

There are going to be a lot of those types of posts in the next month or so. It's pretty natural for all new MMO's be criticized as much as possible before they launch and shortly thereafter. Does the game have some issues? Yes. Are they as game breaking as so many are saying? No. People just like to whine when nothing goes their way. I'd go so far as to say not to bother visiting any other major fan sites for the next month or two as not see the cesspool of endless complaining. Within a month after launch, most of the whiners will move on to the next shiny MMO and leave the rest of the community to do its thing. Will some of those who jump ship be role-players? Probably, as sad as that is. But it happens. No such thing as a perfect game after all. A tremendous amount of the people complaining have clearly not played FFXI for a long period of time. Those who have probably won't have too much difficulty adjusting to the new game. Overall, I'd say not to worry. While this game may not gain 1 million+ subscribers (and probably not even 500K initially), it will hold its own player base no doubt for years to come (see FFXI--still a successful game even after all this time and despite negative Western reviews.)

Open beta starts in like 2 weeks or so. So it's no big deal at this point. Both Ul'dah and Gridania will also be unlocked during this phase. So don't fret if you're not in.

I'm sorry. I meant no offense. I was just trying to let the others know that not everywhere in the world has the same benefits as they do. I majored in Political Science so I'm fairly familiar with country demographics and culture. I make frequent use of sites such as the CIA World Factbook. I've also spent some time in Africa so I'm pretty familiar with the differences there compared to the "Western" world. Was trying to help you out but I'm sorry if it didn't come out the way it should have

After numerous constant complaints about forum activity being too overwhelming for many, I've done something that may or may not help alleviate that partially. One of the reasons given for the overwhelming activity was the fact that there were so many pages per thread. This in turn gives the illusion that the thread is too difficult to keep up on due to a constant climbing page count. Originally, the formula being used by these forums was 10 posts = 1 page. I've since increased this to be 15 posts = 1 page. I may still increase it once more to 20 posts = 1 page. Regardless, I'm hoping this makes some of the threads feel less overwhelming. The number of pages on other active threads has now dropped with this new formula in place.
-
Depends on what country you're in though. In North America, Europe, etc, 50 isn't that much. But in say, South Africa (where I believe Len is from), the life expectancy is about 50.
-
Well, we officially breached two pages on the discussion thread there (over 50 replies) as well as over 1,000 views. And we managed to recruit at least 1-2 more RPers from it while making others learn something new about us. Overall, a huge success! High fives for everyone!
-
Just so everyone knows...IF we do scrap Jecht and the server names DO end up being the same...And if we don't know this before the game launches, we'll end up going with the server closest to the letter L alphabetically. With the current server list, that server would be Sephiroth >.>;;
-
Nonono. Read my post again  . Voting wouldn't last 3 days after the game goes live. We're only voting if the server names are known BEFORE the game launches. So if the final server names aren't known before September 22nd, we wouldn't be voting at all. We would defer to the instructions in the Headlines sticky.
-
Our normal votes are done over 7 days. This particular vote would last a maximum of 3 days. And even that is assuming we have 3 days before the game launches. If server names aren't known by then, that's where the other proposals in the Headlines sticky come into play.
-
Okay, I think maybe we should talk about the voting process after all. The clock is ticking and I want to make sure this goes smoothly. Let's wrap up this discussion with the final major details. We can do the voting in basically two ways. The first is simply via a poll in the Assembly Room. User registration will be set to admin approval only so we don't get floods of fake newcomers trying to rig the vote in their favor. In addition, alternative accounts will be deleted. The second method is a more public vote. By that I mean, there would be no "poll." Instead, every RPC member who wishes to vote would have to actually post the name of their preferred server. Using this method would make it easier to keep track of any who are trying to sabotage the vote. The rule of the thread would be to simply post your preferred server name with NO commentary. The votes would be tallied after the voting officially concludes. I also want to propose the following question: What if the beta server names don't change in final release? Will we just automatically stick with Jecht or should we have a revote? What if there's not enough time for an actual vote? SE has stated that open beta testers would be able to transfer their names (though not character data) to the final version. Thus, if all the RPers are on Jecht and they keep with the naming scheme, that's the server the names would be transferred to. Finally, please go to the Headlines section and look over the sticky Eva posted. In that is a proposal I made quite some time ago regarding server selection procedures if we don't get server names before the game's launch. Please provide feedback on that now or forever hold your peace.

New FF14 Interview: What you hated in beta is here to stay
Kylin replied to Aveline's topic in FFXIV News
Don't go to any of the major fan sites right now >.>. They'll crush your hopes and dreams, eat 'em, spit 'em out, burn 'em, and feed 'em back to you. Seriously. The game probably will be rough to start. But what MMORPG isn't? Remember that this is the bare bones of the game and improvements will be made over time. And then we can tell the future newbies how hard we had it in the old days. -
Thanks guys, was hoping I did a good job with the interview ^^;. Maybe I'll see about posting the full interview transcript up. There were a lot of questions but the actual article had to be shortened no doubt just so people could read it. For those who don't understand what a big deal this is, I'll try to put it into perspective. There are 3 major general FFXIV sites: Zam, Core, and Eorzepedia. Each one generates enormous traffic of thousands of players. Statistically, Zam provides the RPC with over 20% of our redirect traffic. This is a huge statistic. In comparison, Eorzepedia is responsible for about 10% of our redirected traffic. Shockingly, Core is only responsible for about 2% of our traffic despite its massive numbers and the insane amount of times I've posted the RPC link there. So yeah...Zam's support is a really big deal for us.
-
Please do post responses. At the very least, we can start a civil discussion. With Gamescon underway, our article is going to be swept away under the new FF14 info as is. Really bad timing for the article for us I think >.>
-
The problem with the responses is this: If Zam's users don't give a semi-decent response to the article, there's a high chance the admins won't bother posting future stories about us after launch.
-
Front page exposure for us, woohoo! Be sure to check it out when you get the chance. http://ffxiv.zam.com/story.html?story=23012 Edit: The responses to the actual Zam thread are kinda...depressing.

Added release date to the calendar (both collector's and regular edition). If you'd like, you can tally yourself into the headcount as to which day (if either) you plan to start officially playing. Just go to September, click on the event, and add yourself to the tally.

Nuuuuu! I have to delete all extra accounts before the server vote and that'll be pure hell on me
