Poll for both this and metagaming now closed (been 7 days). Here's what I'm going to do. I'm going to use the definitions that came out on top for the etiquette section. As it stands, 16 people voted and only a very small handful of those individuals have left any comments. Thus, I don't want to just cancel their votes as I feel that would be pretty bad etiquette. However, if someone else wishes to take initiative and redraft both definitions up for a re-vote, that'll be fine. In the meantime, we'll use the ones that officially passed.

I think Ul'dah is so popular for a couple reasons. For starters, we've heard and seen so much regarding Limsa Lominsa so far and people are quick to jump at something "new." Ul'dah also comes off (so far) as having less of a narrow theme to it. With Lominsa, you've got basically a bunch of pirates and fishermen. Gridania seems heavily focused on nature (plants, animals, etc). With Ul'dah you've got pit pights, powerful aristocrats, and possibly back alley thieves. It's made even more appealing due to the mention of a "sultan" and the Alladin-like Arabian mysticism.

Would anyone else mind setting up this redraft? I'm currently swamped with the server transfer, forum upgrading, RPC Council stuff, and other surprises yet to come this next week  Also keep in mind that this will delay the opening of the Town Square. Although to be honest, it's probably best to push it back one more week anyway.

/sigh. This kind of stuff was supposed to be discussed in the discussion thread. I asked if anyone wanted to add/modify anything and got no responses. And now everyone is responding now that the actual poll is up -.-. Should we just hold the vote until people figure out what they want in the actual polls? If everyone really wants to make the adjustments, we'll either have to have a re-vote or have everyone who already voted post their thoughts as well so their vote doesn't get discarded. For instance, someone may have voted against something because they didn't like anything about it. If we're going to integrate aspects of different options together, everyone who voted already needs to be taken into consideration. This goes for both polls.

Poll open for 7 days. Choose one of the options below (or neither if you don't like either option). Metagaming (OPTION 1) Meta-gaming is a character knowing something IC that clearly could not be known outside of an OOC source. This often happens when an RPer writes an IC Journal or a story of something their character did alone for the group to read but never intended it to be OOC knowledge. For example: UnfortunateGuy (UG) is always kind to AbsurdlyPowerfulMan (APM) IC. APM thinks UG is their friend IC. UG writes in their character's IC private journal he in reality hates APM. APM reads this OOC and IC starts saying UG hates them though UG is still treating them the same way like they like them. Metagaming (OPTION 2) Metagaming refers to knowing something OOC and applying it as IC knowledge without any logical explanation. When stories are posted on the forums, they are all considered OOC knowledge unless somehow specified otherwise (such as a newspaper clippings). This applies to other OOC sources as well. DonĂ¢t use OOC tools to gain IC knowledge. For example: Example1: AbsurdlyPowerfulMan, having never consulted an alchemist or alchemical text in his life, spends the afternoon before the castle raid mixing together a large batch of sulfur and saltpeter. "This oughtta blow a hole in the castle wall!" (Clearly metagaming. Out-of-Character, APM obviously knows how to make gunpowder. But, even assuming that sulfur, saltpeter, and gunpowder even *exist* In-Character, there is no way that APM would know that mixing them together would do anything, much less how much of each ingredient to use.) ---------- Example2: AbsurdlyPowerfulMan, faced with the prospect of raiding an imposing castle, visits the Alchemist's Guild to acquire a few healing draughts. There, he sees an old man demonstrate his new invention, "fire-sand", a black powder that explodes when exposed to fire! Intrigued, AbsurdlyPowerfulMan purchases a large sack of the "fire-sand" from the old man. "This oughtta blow a hole in the castle wall!" (Not metagaming! OOC, APM still knows what gunpowder is, but his *character* doesn't have any idea... until he happens to see the stuff in action at the Alchemist's Guild! Let's hope he has the good sense to stand well clear of any open flames between here and the castle....) ---------- Example3: UnfortunateGuy's player posts on the FFXIV RPC forms a bit of his character's background, including a secret place he has underneath a warehouse in town. Later that day, UnfortunateGuy's character opens the secret door behind the haybales, to find AbsurdlyPowerfulGuy waiting for him, sword at the ready! (Metagaming. The only reason APG's player knows about the secret place is because UG posted on the forums about it! APG's character has no way of knowing about it, much less getting there *ahead* of him to set up an ambush.)

Since there have been no responses to my previous post in the discussion thread, I'm assuming all of the submissions for voting are correct. Thus, we need to get this started so we can get the Town Square unlocked soon ^^. Please choose one of the options listed below (or neither if you don't like either). Poll remains open for 7 days. God mode (OPTION 1) God-mode (verb) (hyphen optional): To perform In-Character (IC), or attempt to perform IC, actions which are clearly beyond the power of any player character. --------------- Meet our exemplars, AbsurdlyPowerfulMan, or APM, and UnfortunateGuy, or UG. That pretty much tells you all you need to know about them. Example1: AbsurdlyPowerfulMan wiggles his pinky finger, causing a flaming crack to open under UnfortunateGuy's feet and convey him directly to a fiery death at the planet's core. (APM is clearly god-moding. There is simply no means within the game for any player character to do that under any circumstances. And what if the world doesn't actually *have* a flaming core?) ---------- Example2: AbsurdlyPowerfulMan gestures with his right thumb, causing a bolt of lightning to strike UnfortunateGuy and fry him to a crisp. (Still god mode. APM may very well be a Conjurer capable of tossing lightning bolts around, but UG might very well have survived the blast, depending upon how tough he is, or how resistant he is to lightning. Or maybe UG does, in fact, have tremendously fast reflexes that might allow him to dodge the bolt!) ---------- Example3: AbsurdlyPowerfulMan raises an eyebrow, causing everyone within ten yards to think that UnfortunateGuy has stinky feet. (Yep, godmode again. APM cannot dictate what other people think or feel. Whether or not UG's feet actually do stink is, of course, another matter entirely.) ---------- Example4: AbsurdlyPowerfulMan waggles his fingers, causing a bolt of lightning to streak forth in UnfortunateGuy's direction. (Not godmode! At least, not if APM can actually toss a Thunder spell.) God mode (OPTION 2) God mode is the tendency to roleplay someone else's character or to say their lines for them. When RPing, one should act and answer for his/herself, and not for the others they are RPing with. It can sometimes be hard, a player may have an idea of where they would like the RP to follow, however, this is the beauty of RPing. One must adapt to whatever comes, whether it was what they were expecting or not. ((Same examples listed in option 1.)) God mode (OPTION 3) God mode: The act of making oneĂ¢s character beyond that of the norm in a way that promotes invincibility, immortality, extreme influence, or unnatural powers that interfere with the natural laws of Hydaelyn. God mode is usually a problem that comes up during role-play conflict, though it appears elsewhere in the role-playing world as well. Do not role-play yourself as the spawn or incarnation of a god. That is god mode. Do not role-play yourself as a being from another world with the power to level cities. That is god mode. Do not role-play yourself as a prince with supreme influence over the nation leaders and their subjects. That is god mode. Do not role-play yourself as being so powerful that you can dodge any and every attack thrown at you constantly. That is god mode. You get the picture, right? ((Same examples listed in option 1.))

Welcome Thighs--err, Endi! And yes, I can easily change your username when you finally decide upon a character name
-
Okay, let me see if I have this right so far. Please correct me if I'm missing anything. These are the definitions nominated for a vote so far (I added one of my own for each). God mode (Option 1): God mode (Option 2): God mode (Option 3): Metagaming (Option 1): Metagaming (Option 2): If you wish to add any more definitions or modify current ones, please do so now. I'm hoping to get the polls up within a few days.

We don't need to really concern ourselves so much with enforcement. The only enforcement the RPC will be capable of doing is on these forums. Individual guilds will have their own definitions most likely and enforce them their own way. Anywho, if anyone wishes to create/nominate a definition, please post it in its complete form in quotes or something.
-
Wow, this topic slipped down the page quite a bit  . Was hoping for a lot more debate but I guess there really isn't a lot to discuss this time around. Whatever happened to having 10+ page discussions? Would anyone like to formally submit a definition for one or both to be voted on? As stated in the first post, I'd like us to have more than one definition to choose between this time around. It's a bit better than a simple yes/no vote. If you wish to submit a definition to be added to the ballot (even if it's a copy/paste of one already stated in this thread), please do so now. If you intend to propose a definition for both god mode and metagaming, keeep in mind that they will be both voted on separately. Be sure to include at least one example in the definition. I may end up submitting my own definition to be added to the ballot later this week. Official voting will begin this weekend if we have at least 2-3+ proposed definitions by then.

I actually really like that button >.> Also moved to gallery section since it's an artistic type subject (and the gallery has been slacking in activity anyway lol).
-
Bump. A whole LOT of you still need to vote  . Just shout out your choice. Remember that this award design will be used in the future RPC Awards!
-
That's actually a minor topic in the upcoming RPC Council Meeting . At the moment, the RPC does not have an official logo of any sort though. It would be nice to have one but finding a graphic artist willing to try making such a thing might be difficult.
-
Yeah, link still not working for me. It might be a regional issue or something (certain regions may block it). Anyway, my vote is for Aguacatin: RPC Award
-
Since nobody else is going to start this topic, I suppose I will . This will eventually lead to a vote following the discussion. While definitions for god mode and metagaming will both be both voted on separately, they will both be discussed in this thread together initially. They are two sides of the same coin after all. The definitions will be used for the purposes of our RP sections here on these forums. Individual RP groups may end up with different definitions for their own guild. Definitions will also be added to our etiquette section as a guide for newer role-players. This time around, voting will end up differently as well. Instead of just voting yes or no on a single definition, weĂ¢ll end up voting on various different selections of definitions (such as definition Ă¢a,Ă¢ Ă¢b,Ă¢ or Ă¢cĂ¢ for instance). So to get this started rather simply, how have many of you defined god mode and metagaming in the past? If you were in a FFXI RP linkshell (or any other RP group in an MMO), now would be a great time to post how that group defined it. WeĂ¢ll likely ultimately draw from these examples to create our own definitions. What is god mode in the environment of an MMORPG to you? What about metagaming? Examples would also be nice since weĂ¢ll need to add at least one vivid example to our definition.

I believe an interview previously stated that the alpha specs would be higher than the final version. I can't remember where I saw it but I'm pretty sure they said that. So don't worry too much yet ^^
-
Link hasn't been working since last night . Also, when does voting close? The 28th? Edit: Link still not working several days later. Hope you plan to extend voting since a lot of people haven't been able to even see the submissions yet >.>; Edit 2: Link still isn't working over a week later. /pokes Ram.

Poor roegadyn. So little representation. Guilds are going to have to fight over them just so they have one in their group

Bump. Deadline is almost here! Hopefully more than a couple of you submitted some artwork for the award.

Thinking of dipping back into FFXI until XIV..
Kylin replied to Verranicus's topic in Off-Topic Discussion
Silly RPers chasing tails again  First and foremost, we need to realize that FFXI's RP community is vastly different than what it once was and I think the tiny handful of remaining shells can agree on that. Aside from being significantly smaller, the remaining shells have mostly settled into a strong core group of friends most likely. That means they're not necessarily used to getting new members and are primarily focused on keeping their core members interested in stuff. Keeping them interested probably means getting OOC stuff done (missions, gear, etc). From what I understand, the above shells don't revolve their entire RP around the game missions but rather do the missions moreso on the side. They simply RP while doing so is all. Second, much like FFXIV's RP community will vary in style from group to group, FFXI is no different. What's good for one group may not be good for another. Different RPers have different needs and like to express themselves in different ways. Those things being said, I do personally agree with Verranicus to an extent. I don't condemn using the game missions in RP. It's just not my individual style to do so. The one exception to this was when Crystalline had a CoP static and a group of us (Kes and Tyriont included) Rped through those. We did however keep the content of those missions strictly between ourselves and never really spoke about any of it in public to the other members who weren't in the static. Another thing about the game missions is that you can use them in other ways. I did this a lot with some of my RP events. For example, let's look at mission 5-1 (lich fight). Instead of fighting the lich that was guarding a seal to the Shadowlord's imprisonment, we used the fight for something completely different. One of my villainous characters, a scientist named Ramsus Mortavo, ended up eventually getting cornered by some of the linkshell's good guys. They chased him through Fei'Yin and to the burning circle basically (he was a level 1 mule of mine and I literally got him to the burning circle on foot >.>). After some IC dialouge that led to various revelations, Mortavo downed a vial of a potion that turned him into a skeleton. Then we entered the 5-1 fight, IC'ly fighting Mortavo and not the actual storyline's creature. I did similar things with mission 2-3 and several bcnms. Thus, the game's storyline can be used as a tool and still stick with canon if used correctly. Ultimately, it's up to one's individual style and preferences though. Ironically enough, the whole mission/rp mixing issue will actually be a formal discussion and eventually end up in our etiquette section. -
The Eorzeapedia community has recently launced a new feature called "op-ed." This feature allows registered users to submit written articles to be placed on the front page of the fan site. Basically, users submit high quality articles about something and then they all get sifted through by the administration in order to select one to put on the main page. Detailed info can be found here: http://www.eorzeapedia.com/2010/04/12/n ... own-op-ed Why is this significant? It gives us the chance to get not only the RPC, but RP in general on the front page of one of the 3 premier fan sites. Not only would this potentially get SE's attention, but it would also start in depth discussions about RP out in the public (which is one of the RPC's goals). I personally think we should select a week in which to submit several RP related articles created by RPC members in order to increase the likelihood of one getting on Eorzeapedia's front page on that week. Any of you, so long as you're registered with Eorzeapedia, can write articles to submit. A topic that may be of interest is our definition of RP. It would be nice to convey it to non-RPers and maybe boost general interest in RP as a result. So you can easily write an article revolving around that if you want. This is something I'd be especially interested in if I wasn't so busy right now. So I figured I'd post it here and see if others were interested in writing an article to submit. Just keep in mind that the article has to be high quality or Eorzeapedia won't select it. Several people can take this endeavor on at once if they'd like to increase our chances.

Thinking of dipping back into FFXI until XIV..
Kylin replied to Verranicus's topic in Off-Topic Discussion
The RP scene in Vana'diel is a bit less than spectacular in that it's a dying art. Never having a RP server from the start certainly didn't help matters. There is a sticky in this section of the forums with RP linkshells in FFXI though. Currently, there are only 2 listed, one on Siren and the other on Lakshmi. I do know that there are two more though -- one on Asura and one from Sylph simply awaiting advertisement details. Tsumi can shed more light on the currently unadvertised Asuran RP group when she gets the opportunity. Isilme knows about the Sylph one but has yet to even log in since registering, so that one may not get advertised . Just keep in mind that all of these groups are pretty small these days in comparison to what FF14's RP community will be at the start. -
I've updated/added the following smilies:   :cat: :flower: :joker: :afro: :bounce: I still plan to modify some more and add some new ones in the next week or two. I'll keep you updated via this thread ^^

Hyur midlander male, likely from Ul'dah (need more lore first to decide on city). Also plan to create two alts, though they'll both come around later down the line at some point. One will be a lalafell dunesfolk female and the other another hyur male midlander (unless male miqo'te becomes reality, in which case he'll become that >.>).
