Yoshi himself has made it crystal clear many many times now that the game will not be going FTP, as he sees going that route as a 'failure' of the game due to making a last resort for a money grab. He made a huuuuge wall of text post about it all on the beta forums that I wish was archived somewhere. But in that wall of text, he was very clear that FTP was off the table.

This is just a simple notification that I've merged three new RP server related threads into this one today. So if anyone panics and cries conspiracy about mysteriously deleted threads, please direct them to this message 8-)
-
Don't spam it, you're just causing more server issues that way  Also, SE disabled registration temporarily as per their twitter account update. So you won't get through right now no matter what.
-
Registering on the wiki is impossible since it's an admin only permission . Dunno how you did that Edit: I'm guessing you registered during the transfer before the wiki was officially integrated. So maybe that's why.
-
You need to change your username here in your user control panel. Names with underscores are not recognized by the wiki. That's just the way the bridge between this forum and Mediawiki works. Once you change your username to somehow eliminate the underscore in it, you should have no problem logging in ^^

SE hasn't even announced this yet. Of course it won't work. The only reason people know about the page being up is because a handful of overly eager people on the beta forums constantly refreshed the page and noticed it changed, then posted as such and started rallying everyone to essentially charge the site. SE will make a post on the Lodestone, beta forums, and/or via email when the feature is ready. Patience is a virtue

This is correct. Summon I and II are still usable on SMN. They just summon Titan and Garuda instead.
-
I think they'll almost certainly let us dress them as we wish. They mentioned letting us summon them in our houses and there are also market stands in the housing instance (Mist), which leads me to think retainers will be capable of being summoned there too. And if retainers are visible to other PCs, it's only logical to allow gear customization. The personality thing really just involves choosing one of 5-6 personalities. I forget how many there were. The only one I remember now is "polite." All it really does so far is determine how the retainer greets you when you summon and dismiss him/her. They tell you what each personality option will say when talking to you, so it's pretty cut and dry.
-
At the moment, there doesn't appear to be a vanity feature for retainers. It existed in 1.0 though and I'm sure they'll bring it back sooner or later. For now, they're stuck in that airplane flight attendant looking gear >.> As per the original question, yes. The customization is a 1 time deal. You hire a retainer and then customize their appearance, choose personality, and name them (the old 1.0 name will come up during a prompt at the end if you had a 1.0 retainer, allowing you to keep the name or change it). After you finish, you'll be able to access any items from 1.0 that were left in your original retainer(s). The customization is pretty sweet though. It's identical to the regular character creator, except it doesn't force you to leave the game or anything. It's built right in

Alert system is now operational again. Features will be expanded in the next couple days hopefully to allow for the following: --Alert for receiving a warning from a mod. --Alert for a suspended warning. --Alert when a thread of yours is moved. --Alert when your name is mentioned in any post (still only about 75% sure this one will be operational but we'll find out~) As usual, you can disable certain (or all) alerts via your control panel if you so wish.

I understand the error is annoying. But I really think some people are taking it way too seriously. It's ONE error. And considering how smooth phase 3 was, once they fix that error it should be smooth sailing again. Writing off the game or acting like SE is outright horrible for not being able to fix it immediately is just...well, I won't say the word here The beta forums look beyond ridiculous and childish right now. Please refrain from bringing that behavior over to these forums. Also, for added food for thought: XIV has apparently shattered the MMO record for most concurrent online users at once in an open beta. So many people online at once is bound to cause these problems, and it's a good thing that the issue is coming up in a stress test rather than launch. http://www.gamingunion.net/news/final-fantasy-xiv-smashes-open-beta-record--9634.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+gamingunion+%28Gaming+Union%29

In regards to the "lack of communication," SE HAS been communicating. They've stated they're aware of the problem and investigating. This is beta guys. When 1 million people are bum rushing the servers, this happens. In ALL MMOs. I see it happen every. single. time. I've seen some people threaten to quit entirely over this and that's just downright silly (and dare I say immature). The problem will be gone most likely by launch. And hiccups here and there during the final phase of beta aren't uncommon at all.

This is a redo of a poll conducted almost three years ago for a Lantern article (found here: http://ffxiv-roleplayers.com/lantern/2010/12/eorzeas-safest-city/ ). I'm going to post up a new article about it with the new results! So assume a journalist randomly comes up to one of your characters and asks you what you think the safest city in Eorzea is. Feel free to give an IC quote in a post below and you may be quoted in the article! Options include Ul'dah, Limsa Lominsa, and Gridania. Hamlets were left off because everyone would almost certainly pick one of those and there are simply too many to list . Also want to keep results comparable to the old one.

To increase awareness, I'm posting this in the Headlines section. The Tonberry's Lantern integration with this site has been completed successfully! You may all now start creating IC articles at your leisure that can be read by the other denizens of Eorzea. The Lantern is based on Wordpress. But due to integration, it uses the same login credentials that you use here. So you should be able to navigate between there and here seamlessly after your first login at the Lantern. In addition, anything posted there will AUTOMATICALLY cross-post itself in the Tonberry's Lantern forum section to increase reader awareness of the new article. You are highly encouraged to read this thread for an overview and instructions: http://ffxiv-roleplayers.com/showthread.php?tid=3562&pid=45773#pid45773 Any questions can be asked either here or via the above linked thread.

This is just a notice that I've temporarily disabled the forum alert system. In the process of updating it to expand its features, it broke a bit. No alerts were being given and a new bug was discovered that caused an error during user registration. I'm working on it and hope to have it back up and running within the week. Sorry for the inconvenience.

As stated above, Intermission is the OOC chat channel for Balmung RPers. It has had several incarnations over the years and tends to consistently rise from its own ashes when the need arises. It started out as Mog House, turned into Out of Character, then Intermission, then Backstage, and now Intermission again. IC, there is not and likely will never be an all-encompassing shell. The diversity in RP styles is too great on Balmung for something like that to work. This diversity even prevents some from joining the OOC mega shell as well. Balmung's culture is more along the lines of an open buffet. Some people like mashed potatoes with their meal, some don't. Some like steamed carrots. Others don't. There's something for everyone and people are free to mix what they wish together. But nobody actually mixes it all together. In comparison, Gilgamesh is trying to make more of a soup type of culture where the ingredients all blend together. Whether this succeeds or not remains to be seen, but the attempt makes it easier for a meta IC shell on their end.

Server guidance for those new to the community
Kylin replied to Miss Marigold's topic in Off-Topic Discussion
There's already a sticky in the RP Discussion section. We decided to opt for Nel's video for the dedicated topic since it sets a far more positive tone and is informative. -
You will not have to actually exchange gil, aside from in an emote perhaps.

I've had a number of people comment here and in private that they can't make that date. That said, I'm quite flexible since I'm on vacation anyway that entire week. So I added a poll to the OP. Feel free to put what date you'd prefer, and we'll see if we should stick with the current date or move it to the day before or after instead~

I want to remind everyone that this period of time for a pre-launch MMO is where tension tends to peak and drama is most probable. As a result, our laissez-faire approach to moderation has temporarily been tossed aside for the time being. Please know that such hard-lined tactics (such as locking threads frequently, censoring some posts, etc) is highly unorthodox here. But it has become necessary due to the explosion of members. Anywhere with a high population is bound to see similar problems, and we anticipate things to die down considerably within a few months after launch (and even immediately after launch). Right now, there are simply a ton of different camps who want different things. And sometimes, we can't give every camp what they want. We first and foremost must consider the RPC as a whole. You are urged to THINK about what you're posting before you post it. As most of you are adults, I'm sure that's not too much to ask... Think to yourself, "is this post/topic bound to be inflammatory and/or add tension?" If the answer is even so much as a 'maybe,' reconsider what you're posting. Or don't do it at all. Again, this period of time pre-MMO launch is always incredibly tense and even the slightest slip of the tongue can start up World War III. If you have a problem with a moderator's actions, take it up with me in private. Do not post public threads about it, as that only increases the friction. Though I should warn you that I will more often than not back the mods in their actions. Again, the laissez-faire approach will simply not work during this particular period of time. Up until now, the forum's warning system has been deactivated. I have, as of today, activated it. This means that, starting now, mods will be able to give out specific warnings to users for specific posts and point out exactly what a user did "wrong." Should one's warning level hit 100% (it usually takes a number of warnings to achieve this), further action will be taken (such as a temporary muting of the user's account). So now, I highly advise people to REALLY consider what they're posting. Because we don't care if you're from Gilgamesh or Balmung or somewhere else. Everyone is equally subject to the rules of this forum and are expected to respect one another. Please note that only you can see your own warning level and other users cannot see it (aside from mods). It is unfortunate that we have to moderate so heavily right now. But it's necessary considering some are just not capable of behaving themselves when they feel they've got the whole "anonymous online user means I can be as mean as I want" thing going on. I don't know what other community forums people come from or how they handle things there, and I really don't care since we're not those forums. My suggestion to those with strong opinions from here until launch: Don't post at all in any thread you think has a high drama rating (server vs server threads, etc). If you absolutely HAVE to say something, show it to someone who's not bias to see if they think it has the right tone to it (because yes, there IS tone on the Internet). Open beta is mere days away now. Early access is a week after that. And launch is right after. We're in the final stretch guys. Control yourselves. Because relying on mods to control you is just silly, especially if you're a grown adult. This is merely a notification and not open to discussion, and is locked. Remember: We're just days away from Open Beta now! Hope to see some of you in game then!

Holy crap. I love that pic of Raze >.>

Good news everyone! The date has been finalized once and for all. OP and flier have been updated. Event will be Saturday, August 31st at 7pm Eastern time. This is during the launch week. Open beta is too short to hold the event during that phase as originally planned. And early access won't allow for everyone to attend. So this is the official date I settled on. This should also give everyone plenty of time to settle into the game, level up, and get the outfits they want. Event has been added to the calendar and will show up in the sidebar probably next week (events on the calendar only show up there 2 weeks in advance). Please see the updated OP. If you still wish to help with the event in some manner or another (guard/event mod, live stream, performing, etc), please send me either a PM or contact me via skype ( username: zariksylvora ). Please submit any music requests you may want to see for the gala now! Preferably instrumental versions only, as actual songs are meant for performers only.

Server guidance for those new to the community
Kylin replied to Miss Marigold's topic in Off-Topic Discussion
I have no qualms with changing it, but I don't think you'll find much support for that on the Gilgamesh side. But I'd rather hear what the other mods (and other users) think as well. That being said, even if it was changed, I don't believe the forum announcement feature supports links. -

Because the topic of discussion is directly related to the site layout itself (the message at the top of the site) and not the game.
